Betweenness centrality profiles in trees

Betweenness centrality of a vertex in a graph measures the fraction of shortest paths going through the vertex. This is a basic notion for determining the importance of a vertex in a network. The k-betweenness centrality of a vertex is defined similarly, but only considers shortest paths of length at most k. The sequence of k-betweenness centralities for all possible values of k forms the betweenness centrality profile of a vertex. We study properties of betweenness centrality profiles in trees. We show that for scale-free random trees, for fixed k, the expectation of k-betweenness centrality strictly decreases as the index of the vertex increases. We also analyze worst-case properties of profiles in terms of the distance of profiles from being monotone, and the number of times pairs of profiles can cross. This is related to whether k-betweenness centrality, for small values of k, may be used instead of having to consider all shortest paths. Bounds are given that are optimal in order of magnitude. We also present some experimental results for scale-free random trees.

Hydras: Directed Hypergraphs and Horn Formulas

We introduce a new graph parameter, the hydra number, arising from the minimization problem for Horn formulas in propositional logic. The hydra number of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is the minimal number of hyperarcs of the form $u,v\rightarrow w$ required in a directed hypergraph $H=(V,F)$, such that for every pair $(u, v)$, the set of vertices reachable in $H$ from $\{u, v\}$ is the entire vertex set $V$ if $(u, v) \in E$, and it is $\{u, v\}$ otherwise. Here reachability is defined by forward chaining, a standard marking algorithm. Various bounds are given for the hydra number. We show that the hydra number of a graph can be upper bounded by the number of edges plus the path cover number of the line graph of a spanning subgraph, which is a sharp bound in several cases. On the other hand, we construct single-headed graphs for which that bound is off by a constant factor. Furthermore, we characterize trees with low hydra number, and give a lower bound for the hydra number of trees based on the number of vertices that are leaves in the tree obtained from $T$ by deleting its leaves. This bound is sharp for some families of trees. We give bounds for the hydra number of complete binary trees and also discuss a related minimization problem.

Non-characterizability of belief revision: an application of finite model theory

A formal framework is given for the characterizability of a class of belief revision operators, defined using minimization over a class of partial preorders, by postulates. It is shown that for partial orders characterizability implies a definability property of the class of partial orders in monadic second-order logic. Based on a non-definability result for a class of partial orders, an example is given of a non-characterizable class of revision operators. This appears to be the first non-characterizability result in belief revision.
