Observable signatures of dark photons from supernovae

A dark photon is a well-motivated new particle which, as a component of an associated dark sector, could explain dark matter. One strong limit on dark photons arises from excessive cooling of supernovae. We point out that even at couplings where too few dark photons are produced in supernovae to violate the cooling bound, they can be observed directly through their decays. Supernovae produce dark photons which decay to positrons, giving a signal in the 511 keV annihilation line observed by SPI/INTEGRAL. Further, prompt gamma-ray emission by these decaying dark photons gives a signal for gamma-ray telescopes. Existing GRS observations of SN1987a already constrain this, and a future nearby SN could provide a detection. Finally, dark photon decays from extragalactic SN would produce a diffuse flux of gamma rays observable by detectors such as SMM and HEAO-1. Together these observations can probe dark photon couplings several orders of magnitude beyond current constraints for masses of roughly 1 - 100 MeV.

Probing Muonic Forces and Dark Matter at Kaon Factories

Rare kaon decays are excellent probes of light, new weakly-coupled particles. If such particles $X$ couple preferentially to muons, they can be produced in $K\to μνX$ decays. In this letter we evaluate the future sensitivity for this process at NA62 assuming $X$ decays either invisibly or to di-muons. Our main physics target is the parameter space that resolves the $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly, where $X$ is a gauged $L_μ-L_τ$ vector or a muon-philic scalar. The same parameter space can also accommodate dark matter freeze out or reduce the tension between cosmological and local measurements of $H_0$ if the new force decays to dark matter or neutrinos, respectively. We show that for invisible $X$ decays, a dedicated single muon trigger analysis at NA62 could probe much of the remaining $(g-2)_μ$ favored parameter space. Alternatively, if $X$ decays to muons, NA62 can perform a di-muon resonance search in $K\to 3 μν$ events and greatly improve existing coverage for this process. Independently of its sensitivity to new particles, we find that NA62 is also sensitive to the Standard Model predicted rate for $K \to 3μν$, which has never been measured.

Scalars Gliding Through an Expanding Universe

In this article we investigate the effects of single derivative mixing in massive bosonic fields. In the regime of large mixing, we show that this leads to striking changes of the field dynamics, delaying the onset of classical oscillations and decreasing, or even eliminating, the friction due to Hubble expansion. We highlight this phenomenon with a few examples. In the first example, we show how an axion like particle can have its number abundance parametrically enhanced. In the second example, we demonstrate that the QCD axion can have its number abundance enhanced allowing for misalignment driven axion dark matter all the way down to $f_a$ of order astrophysical bounds. In the third example, we show that the delayed oscillation of the scalar field can also sustain a period of inflation. In the last example, we present a situation where an oscillating scalar field is completely frictionless and does not dilute away in time.

A collider observable QCD axion

We present a model where the QCD axion is at the TeV scale and visible at a collider via its decays. Conformal dynamics and strong CP considerations account for the axion coupling strongly enough to the standard model to be produced as well as the coincidence between the weak scale and the axion mass. The model predicts additional pseudoscalar color octets whose properties are completely determined by the axion properties rendering the theory testable.

Evidence for dark matter interactions in cosmological precision data?

We study a two-parameter extension of the cosmological standard model $Λ$CDM in which cold dark matter interacts with a new form of dark radiation. The two parameters correspond to the energy density in the dark radiation fluid $ΔN_\mathrm{fluid}$ and the interaction strength between dark matter and dark radiation. The interactions give rise to a very weak "dark matter drag" which damps the growth of matter density perturbations throughout radiation domination, allowing to reconcile the tension between predictions of large scale structure from the CMB and direct measurements of $σ_8$. We perform a precision fit to Planck CMB data, BAO, large scale structure, and direct measurements of the expansion rate of the universe today. Our model lowers the $χ$-squared relative to $Λ$CDM by about 12, corresponding to a preference for non-zero dark matter drag by more than $3 σ$. Particle physics models which naturally produce a dark matter drag of the required form include the recently proposed non-Abelian dark matter model in which the dark radiation corresponds to massless dark gluons.

Non-Abelian dark matter and dark radiation

We propose a new class of dark matter models with unusual phenomenology. What is ordinary about our models is that dark matter particles are WIMPs, they are weakly coupled to the Standard Model and have weak scale masses. What is unusual is that they come in multiplets of a new "dark" non-Abelian gauge group with milli-weak coupling. The massless dark gluons of this dark gauge group contribute to the energy density of the universe as a form of weakly self-interacting dark radiation. In this paper we explore the consequences of having i.) dark matter in multiplets ii.) self-interacting dark radiation and iii.) dark matter which is weakly coupled to dark radiation. We find that i.) dark matter cross sections are modified by multiplicity factors which have significant consequences for collider searches and indirect detection, ii.) dark gluons have thermal abundances which affect the CMB as dark radiation. Unlike additional massless neutrino species the dark gluons are interacting and have vanishing viscosity and iii.) the coupling of dark radiation to dark matter represents a new mechanism for damping the large scale structure power spectrum. A combination of additional radiation and slightly damped structure is interesting because it can remove tensions between global $Λ$CDM fits from the CMB and direct measurements of the Hubble expansion rate ($H_0$) and large scale structure ($σ_8$).
