Fluctuation and dissipation in memoryless open quantum evolutions

Von Neumann entropy rate for open quantum systems is, in general, written in terms of entropy production and entropy flow rates, encompassing the second law of thermodynamics. When the open-quantum-system evolution corresponds to a quantum dynamical semigroup, we find a decomposition of the infinitesimal generator of the dynamics, that allows to relate the von Neumann entropy rate with the divergence-based quantum Fisher information, at any time. Applied to quantum Gaussian channels that are dynamical semigroups, our decomposition leads to the quantum analog of the generalized classical de Bruijn identity, thus expressing the quantum fluctuation-dissipation relation in that kind of channels. Finally, from this perspective, we analyze how stationarity arises.

Extremal elements of a sublattice of the majorization lattice and approximate majorization

Given a probability vector $x$ with its components sorted in non-increasing order, we consider the closed ball ${\mathcal{B}}^p_ε(x)$ with $p \geq 1$ formed by the probability vectors whose $\ell^p$-norm distance to the center $x$ is less than or equal to a radius $ε$. Here, we provide an order-theoretic characterization of these balls by using the majorization partial order. Unlike the case $p=1$ previously discussed in the literature, we find that the extremal probability vectors, in general, do not exist for the closed balls ${\mathcal{B}}^p_ε(x)$ with $1<p<\infty$. On the other hand, we show that ${\mathcal{B}}^\infty_ε(x)$ is a complete sublattice of the majorization lattice. As a consequence, this ball has also extremal elements. In addition, we give an explicit characterization of those extremal elements in terms of the radius and the center of the ball. This allows us to introduce some notions of approximate majorization and discuss its relation with previous results of approximate majorization given in terms of the $\ell^1$-norm. Finally, we apply our results to the problem of approximate conversion of resources within the framework of quantum resource theory of nonuniformity.

Role of indistinguishability in interferometric phase estimation

We report a theoretical and experimental study on the role of indistinguishability in the estimation of an interferometric phase. In particular, we show that the quantum Fisher information, which limits the maximum precision achievable in the parameter estimation, increases linearly with respect to the degree of indistinguishability between the input photons in a two-port interferometer, in the ideal case of a pure probe state. We experimentally address the role played by the indistinguishability for the case of two photons entering a polarization-based interferometer, where the degree of indistinguishability is characterized by the overlap between two spatial modes. The experimental results support the fact that, even in the presence of white noise, a quantum enhancement in the interferometric phase estimation can be obtained from a minimum degree of indistinguishability.
