A single parameterization for dark energy and modified gravity models

Perhaps the most explored hypothesis for the accelerated cosmic expansion rate arises in the context of extra fields or modifications to General Relativity. A prevalent approach is to parameterize the expansion history through the equation of state, $ω(z)$. We present a parametric form for $ω(z)$ that can reproduce the generic behavior of the most widely used physical models for accelerated expansion with infrared corrections. The present proposal has at most 3 free parameters which can be mapped back to specific archetypal models for dark energy. We analyze in detail how different combinations of data can constrain the specific cases embedded in our form for $ω(z)$. We implement our parametric equation for $ω(z)$ to observations from CMB, the luminous distance of SNeIa, cosmic chronometers, and baryon acoustic oscillations identified in galaxies and in the Lymann-$α$ forest. We find that the parameters can be well constrained by using different observational data sets. Our findings point to an oscillatory behavior consistent with an $f(R)$-like model or an unknown combination of scalar fields. When we let the three parameters vary freely, we find an EoS which oscillates around the phantom-dividing line, and, with over 99$\%$ of confidence, the cosmological constant solution is disfavored.

A unified geometric description of the Universe: from inflation to late-time acceleration without an inflaton nor a cosmological constant

We present a cosmological model arising from a gravitational theory with an infinite tower of higher-order curvature invariants that can reproduce the entire evolution of the Universe: from inflation to late-time acceleration, without invoking an inflaton nor a cosmological constant. The theory is Einsteinian-like. The field equations for a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric are of second-order and can reproduce a late-time evolution that is consistent with the acceleration provided by the cosmological constant at low redshift. Our results force us to reinterpret the nature of dark energy, becoming a mechanism that is inherited solely from the geometry of spacetime.

Inflationary predictions of Geometric Inflation

In the framework of gravitational models obtained from the Geometric Inflation's proposal, where an infinite tower of curvature scalars are included into the action, we compute the slow-roll parameters by the Hubble slow-roll approach. We test the viability of such models as inflationary scenarios, focusing on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, and spectral scalar index, $n_s$, relation. We find that all models considered here produce inflation and, most of them coincide, some better than others, with the marginalized 95$\%$ CL region given by Planck's data collaboration.

Towards geometric inflation: the cubic case

We present an up to cubic curvature correction to General Relativity with the following features: (i) its vacuum spectrum solely consists of a graviton and is ghost-free, (ii) it possesses well-behaved black hole solutions which coincide with those of Einsteinian cubic gravity, (iii) its cosmology is well-posed as an initial value problem and, most importantly, (iv) it entails a geometric mechanism triggering an inflationary period in the early universe (driven by radiation) with a graceful exit to a late-time cosmology arbitrarily close to $Λ$CDM.

Geometric Inflation

We argue that the presence of an inflationary epoch is a natural, almost unavoidable, consequence of the existence of a sensible effective action involving an infinite tower of higher-curvature corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action. No additional fields besides the metric are required. We show that a family of such corrections giving rise to a well-posed cosmological evolution exists and automatically replaces the radiation-dominated early-universe Big Bang by a singularity-free period of exponential growth of the scale factor, which is gracefully connected with standard late-time $Λ$CDM cosmology. The class of higher-curvature theories giving rise to sensible cosmological evolution share additional remarkable properties such as the existence of Schwarzschild-like non-hairy black holes, or the fact that, just like for Einstein gravity, the only degrees of freedom propagated on the vacuum are those of the standard graviton.

Brighter Branes, enhancement of photon production by strong magnetic fields in the gauge/gravity correspondence

We use the gauge/gravity correspondence to calculate the rate of photon production in a strongly coupled N=4 plasma in the presence of an intense magnetic field. We start by constructing a family of back reacted geometries that include the black D3-brane solution, as a smooth limiting case for B=0, and extends to backgrounds with an arbitrarily large constant magnetic field. This family provides the gravitational dual of a field theory in the presence of a very strong magnetic field which intensity can be fixed as desired and allows us to study its effect on the photon production of a quark-gluon plasma. The inclusion of perturbations in the electromagnetic field on these backgrounds is consistent only if the metric is perturbed as well, so we use methods developed to treat operator mixing to manage these general perturbations. Our results show a clear enhancement of photon production with a significant anisotropy, which, in qualitative agreement with the experiments of heavy ion collisions, is particularly noticeable for low P.

Geometric description of the thermodynamics of a black hole with power Maxwell invariant source

Considering a nonlinear charged black hole as a thermodynamics system, we study the geometric description of its phase transitions. Using the formalism of geometrothermodynamics we show that the geometry of the space of thermodynamic equilibrium states of this kind of black holes is related with information about thermodynamic interaction, critical points and phase transitions structure. Our results indicate that the equilibrium manifold of this black hole is curved and that curvature singularities appear exactly at those places where first and second order phase transitions occur.

Topological quantization of the free massive bosonic field

We present a topological quantization of free massive bosonic fields as the first example of a classical field theory with a quantum counterpart to be studied under this formalism. First, we identify certain harmonic map as a geometric representation of this physical system. We take as a concrete example the case of free massive bosonic fields in two dimensions represented by the minimal embedding of a two dimensional surface into a pp-wave spacetime. We use this geometric representation to construct the fiber bundle corresponding to some specific field configurations and then find their topological spectra, defined in terms of the Euler invariant. We discuss the results for some particular configurations and their consequences for the energy of the system.

Topological discretization of bosonic strings

We apply the method of topological quantization to obtain the bosonic string topological spectrum propagating on a flat background. We define the classical configuration of the system, and construct the corresponding principal fiber bundle (pfb) that uniquely represents it. The topological spectrum is defined through the characteristic class of the pfb. We find explicit expressions for the topological spectrum for particular configurations of the bosonic strings on a Minkowski background and show that they lead to a discretization of the total energy of the system.
