A note on the wave equation on black hole spacetimes with small non-decaying first order terms

We present an elementary physical space argument to establish local integrated decay estimates for the perturbed wave equation $\Box_g ϕ= εβ^a \partial_a ϕ$ on the exterior of the Schwarzschild geometry $(\mathcal{M},g)$. Here $β$ is a regular vectorfield on $\mathcal{M}$ decaying suitably in space but not necessarily in time. The proof is formulated to cover also perturbations of the Regge--Wheeler equation.

Unique continuation from infinity in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter spacetimes

We consider the unique continuation properties of asymptotically Anti-de Sitter spacetimes by studying Klein-Gordon-type equations $\Box_g ϕ+ σϕ= \mathcal{G} ( ϕ, \partial ϕ)$, $σ\in \mathbb{R}$, on a large class of such spacetimes. Our main result establishes that if $ϕ$ vanishes to sufficiently high order (depending on $σ$) on a sufficiently long time interval along the conformal boundary $\mathcal{I}$, then the solution necessarily vanishes in a neighborhood of $\mathcal{I}$. In particular, in the $σ$-range where Dirichlet and Neumann conditions are possible on $\mathcal{I}$ for the forward problem, we prove uniqueness if both these conditions are imposed. The length of the time interval can be related to the refocusing time of null geodesics on these backgrounds and is expected to be sharp. Some global applications as well a uniqueness result for gravitational perturbations are also discussed. The proof is based on novel Carleman estimates established in this setting.

Shock Formation in Small-Data Solutions to $3D$ Quasilinear Wave Equations: An Overview

In his 2007 monograph, D. Christodoulou proved a remarkable result giving a detailed description of shock formation, for small $H^s$-initial conditions ($s$ sufficiently large), in solutions to the relativistic Euler equations in three space dimensions. His work provided a significant advancement over a large body of prior work concerning the long-time behavior of solutions to higher-dimensional quasilinear wave equations, initiated by F. John in the mid 1970's and continued by S. Klainerman, T. Sideris, L. Hörmander, H. Lindblad, S. Alinhac, and others. Our goal in this paper is to give an overview of his result, outline its main new ideas, and place it in the context of the above mentioned earlier work. We also introduce the recent work of J. Speck, which extends Christodoulou's result to show that for two important classes of quasilinear wave equations in three space dimensions, small-data shock formation occurs precisely when the quadratic nonlinear terms fail the classic null condition.

Decay properties of Klein-Gordon fields on Kerr-AdS spacetimes

This paper investigates the decay properties of solutions to the massive linear wave equation $\Box_g ψ+ \frac{α}{l^2} ψ=0$ for $g$ the metric of a Kerr-AdS spacetime satisfying $|a|l<r_+^2$ and $α<9/4$ satisfying the Breitenlohner Freedman bound. We prove that the non-degenerate energy of $ψ$ with respect to an appropriate foliation of spacelike slices decays like $(\log t^\star)^{-2}$. Our estimates are expected to be sharp from heuristic and numerical arguments in the physics literature suggesting that general solutions will only decay logarithmically. The underlying reason for the slow decay rate can be traced back to a stable trapping phenomenon for asymptotically anti de Sitter black holes which is in turn a consequence of the reflecting boundary conditions for $ψ$ at null-infinity.

Quasimodes and a Lower Bound on the Uniform Energy Decay Rate for Kerr-AdS Spacetimes

We construct quasimodes for the Klein-Gordon equation on the black hole exterior of Kerr-Anti-de Sitter (Kerr-AdS) spacetimes. Such quasi-modes are associated with time-periodic approximate solutions of the Klein Gordon equation and provide natural candidates to probe the decay of solutions on these backgrounds. They are constructed as the solutions of a semi-classical non-linear eigenvalue problem arising after separation of variables, with the (inverse of the) angular momentum playing the role of the semi-classical parameter. Our construction results in exponentially small errors in the semi-classical parameter. This implies that general solutions to the Klein Gordon equation on Kerr-AdS cannot decay faster than logarithmically. The latter result completes previous work by the authors, where a logarithmic decay rate was established as an upper bound.

Self-gravitating Klein-Gordon fields in asymptotically Anti-de-Sitter spacetimes

We initiate the study of the spherically symmetric Einstein-Klein-Gordon system in the presence of a negative cosmological constant, a model appearing frequently in the context of high-energy physics. Due to the lack of global hyperbolicity of the solutions, the natural formulation of dynamics is that of an initial boundary value problem, with boundary conditions imposed at null infinity. We prove a local well-posedness statement for this system, with the time of existence of the solutions depending only on an invariant H^2-type norm measuring the size of the Klein-Gordon field on the initial data. The proof requires the introduction of a renormalized system of equations and relies crucially on r-weighted estimates for the wave equation on asymptotically AdS spacetimes. The results provide the basis for our companion paper establishing the global asymptotic stability of Schwarzschild-Anti-de-Sitter within this system.

Stability of Schwarzschild-AdS for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Klein-Gordon system

In this paper, we study the global behavior of solutions to the spherically symmetric coupled Einstein-Klein-Gordon (EKG) system in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. We prove that the Schwarzschild-AdS spacetimes (the trivial black hole solutions of the EKG system for which $ϕ=0$ identically) are asymptotically stable: Small perturbations of Schwarzschild-AdS initial data again lead to regular black holes, with the metric on the black hole exterior approaching a Schwarzschild-AdS spacetime. The main difficulties in the proof arise from the lack of monotonicity for the Hawking mass and the asymptotically AdS boundary conditions, which render even (part of) the orbital stability intricate. These issues are resolved in a bootstrap argument on the black hole exterior, with the redshift effect and weighted Hardy inequalities playing the fundamental role in the analysis. Both integrated decay and pointwise decay estimates are obtained.

Well-posedness for the massive wave equation on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes

In this short paper, we prove a well-posedness theorem for the massive wave equation (with the mass satisfying the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound) on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces. The solution is constructed as a limit of solutions to an initial boundary value problem with boundary at a finite location in spacetime by finally pushing the boundary out to infinity. The solution obtained is unique within the energy class (but non-unique if the decay at infinity is weakened).

Ultimately Schwarzschildean Spacetimes and the Black Hole Stability Problem

In this paper, we introduce a class of spacetimes $\left(\mathcal{M},g\right)$ which satisfy the vacuum Einstein equations and dynamically approach a Schwarzschild solution of mass $M$, a class we shall call \emph{ultimately Schwarzschildean spacetimes}. The approach is captured in terms of boundedness and decay assumptions on appropriate spacetime-norms of the Ricci-coefficients and spacetime curvature. Given such assumptions at the level of $k$ derivatives of the Ricci-coefficients (and hence $k-1$ derivatives of curvature), we prove boundedness and decay estimates for $k$ derivatives of \emph{curvature}. The proof employs the framework of vectorfield multipliers and commutators for the Bel-Robinson tensor, pioneered by Christodoulou-Klainerman in the context of the stability of the Minkowski space. We provide multiplier analogues capturing the essential decay mechanisms (which have been identified previously for the scalar wave equation on black hole backgrounds) for the Bianchi equations. In particular, a formulation of the redshift-effect near the horizon is obtained. Morever, we identify a certain hierarchy in the Bianchi equations, which leads to the control of strongly $r$-weighted spacetime curvature-norms near infinity. This allows to avoid the use the classical conformal Morawetz multiplier $K$, therby generalizing recent work of Dafermos and Rodnianski in the context of the wave equation. Finally, the proof requires a detailed understanding of the structure of the error-terms in the interior. This is particularly intricate in view of both the phenomenon of trapped orbits and the fact that, unlike in the stability of Minkowski space, not all curvature components decay to zero.

On the massive wave equation on slowly rotating Kerr-AdS spacetimes

The massive wave equation $\Box_g ψ- α\fracΛ{3} ψ= 0$ is studied on a fixed Kerr-anti de Sitter background $(\mathcal{M},g_{M,a,Λ})$. We first prove that in the Schwarzschild case (a=0), $ψ$ remains uniformly bounded on the black hole exterior provided that $α< {9/4}$, i.e. the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound holds. Our proof is based on vectorfield multipliers and commutators: The usual energy current arising from the timelike Killing vector field $T$ (which fails to be non-negative pointwise) is shown to be non-negative with the help of a Hardy inequality after integration over a spacelike slice. In addition to $T$, we construct a vectorfield whose energy identity captures the redshift producing good estimates close to the horizon. The argument is finally generalized to slowly rotating Kerr-AdS backgrounds. This is achieved by replacing the Killing vectorfield $T=\partial_t$ with $K=\partial_t + λ\partial_ϕ$ for an appropriate $λ\sim a$, which is also Killing and--in contrast to the asymptotically flat case--everywhere causal on the black hole exterior. The separability properties of the wave equation on Kerr-AdS are not used. As a consequence, the theorem also applies to spacetimes sufficiently close to the Kerr-AdS spacetime, as long as they admit a causal Killing field $K$ which is null on the horizon.

On the nonlinear stability of higher-dimensional triaxial Bianchi IX black holes

In this paper, we prove that the 5-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini solution of the Einstein vacuum equations is orbitally stable (in the fully non-linear theory) with respect to vacuum perturbations of initial data preserving triaxial Bianchi IX symmetry. More generally, we prove that 5-dimensional vacuum spacetimes developing from suitable asymptotically flat triaxial Bianchi IX symmetric data and containing a trapped or marginally trapped homogeneous 3-surface possess a complete null infinity whose past is bounded to the future by a regular event horizon, whose cross-sectional volume in turn satisfies a Penrose inequality, relating it to the final Bondi mass. In particular, the results of this paper give the first examples of vacuum black holes which are not stationary exact solutions.
