The Quadrupole Moment of Compact Binaries to the Fourth post-Newtonian Order: From Source to Canonical Moment

As a crucial step towards the completion of the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) gravitational-wave generation from compact binary systems, we obtain the expressions of the so-called "canonical" multipole moments of the source in terms of the "source" and "gauge" moments. The canonical moments describe the propagation of gravitational waves outside the source's near zone, while the source and gauge moments encode explicit information about the matter source. Those two descriptions, in terms of two sets of canonical moments or in terms of six sets of source and gauge moments, are isometric. We thus construct the non-linear diffeomorphism between them up to the third post-Minkowskian order, and we exhibit the concrete expression of the canonical mass-type quadrupole moment at the 4PN order. This computation is one of the last missing pieces for the determination of the gravitational-wave phasing of compact binary systems at 4PN order.

The Quadrupole Moment of Compact Binaries to the Fourth post-Newtonian Order: I. Non-Locality in Time and Infra-Red Divergencies

With the aim of providing high accuracy post-Newtonian (PN) templates for the analysis of gravitational waves generated by compact binary systems, we complete the analytical derivation of the source type mass quadrupole moment of compact binaries (without spins) at the fourth PN order of general relativity. Similarly to the case of the conservative 4PN equations of motion, we show that the quadrupole moment at that order contains a non-local (in time) contribution, arising from the tail-transported interaction entering the conservative part of the dynamics. Furthermore, we investigate the infra-red (IR) divergences of the quadrupole moment. In a previous work, this moment has been computed using a Hadamard partie finie procedure for the IR divergences, but the knowledge of the conservative equations of motion indicates that those divergences have to be dealt with by means of dimensional regularization. This work thus derives the difference between the two regularization schemes, which has to be added on top of the previous result. We show that unphysical IR poles start to appear at the 3PN order, and we determine all of these up to the 4PN order. In particular, the non-local tail term comes in along with a specific pole at the 4PN order. It will be proven in a companion paper that the poles in the source-type quadrupole are cancelled in the physical radiative type quadrupole moment measured at future null infinity.

The Quadrupole Moment of Compact Binaries to the Fourth post-Newtonian Order: II. Dimensional Regularization and Renormalization

The regularization and renormalization of the radiative mass-type quadrupole moment of inspiralling compact binaries (without spins) is investigated at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. As clear from the conservative 4PN equations of motion, a dimensional regularization has to be implemented in order to properly treat the non-linear interactions experienced by gravitational waves during their propagation toward future null infinity. By implementing such procedure, we show that the poles coming from the source moment (computed in a companion paper) are exactly cancelled in the radiative moment, as expected for a physical quantity. We thus define and obtain a "renormalized" source quadrupole, three-dimensional by nature, which is an important step towards the computation of the gravitational-wave flux with 4PN accuracy. Furthermore, we explicitly prove the equivalence between the dimensional regularization and the previously used Hadamard partie finie scheme up to the 3PN order.

Multipole Expansion of Gravitational Waves: from Harmonic to Bondi coordinates

We transform the metric of an isolated matter source in the multipolar post-Minkowskian approximation from harmonic (de Donder) coordinates to radiative Newman-Unti (NU) coordinates. To linearized order, we obtain the NU metric as a functional of the mass and current multipole moments of the source, valid all-over the exterior region of the source. Imposing appropriate boundary conditions we recover the generalized Bondi-van der Burg-Metzner-Sachs residual symmetry group. To quadratic order, in the case of the mass-quadrupole interaction, we determine the contributions of gravitational-wave tails in the NU metric, and prove that the expansion of the metric in terms of the radius is regular to all orders. The mass and angular momentum aspects, as well as the Bondi shear, are read off from the metric. They are given by the radiative quadrupole moment including the tail terms.

Hamiltonian for tidal interactions in compact binary systems to next-to-next-to-leading post-Newtonian order

In previous works, we obtained the leading, next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading (NNL) post-Newtonian (PN) corrections in the conservative tidal interactions between two compact non-spinning objects using a Lagrangian of effective field theory (EFT) in harmonic coordinates. In the present paper, we compute the corresponding NNL PN tidal effective Hamiltonian in ADM-like and isotropic coordinates, with contributions from mass quadrupole, current quadrupole and mass octupole tidal interactions, consistently included at that level. We also derive the NNL tidal Hamiltonian in Delaunay variables. We find full agreement in the overlap with recent results that were derived using tools from scattering amplitudes and the EFT to second post-Minkowskian (PM) order.

Fokker action of non-spinning compact binaries at the fourth post-Newtonian approximation

The Fokker action governing the motion of compact binary systems without spins is derived in harmonic coordinates at the fourth post-Newtonian approximation (4PN) of general relativity. Dimensional regularization is used for treating the local ultraviolet (UV) divergences associated with point particles, followed by a renormalization of the poles into a redefinition of the trajectories of the point masses. Effects at the 4PN order associated with wave tails propagating at infinity are included consistently at the level of the action. A finite part procedure based on analytic continuation deals with the infrared (IR) divergencies at spatial infinity, which are shown to be fully consistent with the presence of near-zone tails. Our end result at 4PN order is Lorentz invariant and has the correct self-force limit for the energy of circular orbits. However, we find that it differs from the recently published result derived within the ADM Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity [T. Damour, P. Jaranowski, and G. Schäfer, Phys. Rev. D 89, 064058 (2014)]. More work is needed to understand this discrepancy.

Gravitational-wave tail effects to quartic non-linear order

Gravitational-wave tails are due to the backscattering of linear waves onto the space-time curvature generated by the total mass of the matter source. The dominant tails correspond to quadratic non-linear interactions and arise at the one-and-a-half post-Newtonian (1.5PN) order in the gravitational waveform. The "tails-of-tails", which are cubic non-linear effects appearing at the 3PN order in the waveform, are also known. We derive here higher non-linear tail effects, namely those associated with quartic non-linear interactions or "tails-of-tails-of-tails", which are shown to arise at the 4.5PN order. As an application, we obtain at that order the complete coefficient in the total gravitational-wave energy flux of compact binary systems moving on circular orbits. Our result perfectly agrees with black-hole perturbation calculations in the limit of extreme mass ratio of the two compact objects.

Ready-to-use post-Newtonian gravitational waveforms for binary black holes with non-precessing spins: An update

For black-hole binaries whose spins are (anti-) aligned with respect to the orbital angular momentum of the binary, we compute the frequency domain phasing coefficients including the quadratic-in-spin terms up to the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order, the cubic-in-spin terms at the leading order, 3.5PN, and the spin-orbit effects up to the 4PN order. In addition, we obtain the 2PN spin contributions to the amplitude of the frequency-domain gravitational waveforms for non-precessing binaries, using recently derived expressions for the time-domain polarization amplitudes of binaries with generic spins, complete at that accuracy level. These two results are updates to Arun et al. (2009) [1] for amplitude and Wade et al. (2013) [2] for phasing. They should be useful to construct banks of templates that model accurately non-precessing inspiraling binaries, for parameter estimation studies, and or constructing analytical template families that accounts for the inspiral-merger-ringdown phases of the binary.

Dynamics of extended bodies in a Kerr spacetime with spin-induced quadrupole tensor

The features of equatorial motion of an extended body in Kerr spacetime are investigated in the framework of the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon model. The body is assumed to stay at quasi-equilibrium and respond instantly to external perturbations. Besides the mass, it is completely determined by its spin, the multipolar expansion being truncated at the quadrupole order, with a spin-induced quadrupole tensor. The study of the radial effective potential allows to analytically determine the ISCO shift due to spin and the associated frequency of the last circular orbit.

High-order comparisons between post-Newtonian and perturbative self forces

Recent numerical and analytic computations based on the self-force (SF) formalism in general relativity showed that half-integral post-Newtonian (PN) terms, i.e. terms involving odd powers of 1/c, arise in the redshift factor of small mass-ratio black-hole binaries on exact circular orbits. Although those contributions might seem puzzling at first sight for conservative systems that are invariant under time-reversal, they are in fact associated with the so-called non-linear tail-of-tail effect. We shall describe here how the next-to-next-to-leading order contributions beyond the first half-integral 5.5PN conservative effect (i.e. up to order 7.5PN included) have been obtained by means of the standard PN formalism applied to binary systems of point-like objects. The resulting redshift factor in the small mass-ratio limit fully agrees with that of the SF approach.

Non-linear multipole interactions and gravitational-wave octupole modes for inspiralling compact binaries to third-and-a-half post-Newtonian order

This paper is motivated by the need to improve the post-Newtonian (PN) amplitude accuracy of waveforms for gravitational waves generated by inspiralling compact binaries, both for use in data analysis and in the comparison between post-Newtonian approximations and numerical relativity computations. It presents: (i) the non-linear couplings between multipole moments of general post-Newtonian matter sources up to order 3.5PN, including all contributions from tails, tails-of-tails and the non-linear memory effect; and (ii) the source mass-type octupole moment of (non-spinning) compact binaries up to order 3PN, which permits to complete the expressions of the octupole modes (3,3) and (3,1) of the gravitational waveform to order 3.5PN. At this occasion we reconfirm by means of independent calculations our earlier results concerning the source mass-type quadrupole moment to order 3PN. Related discussions on factorized resummed waveforms and the occurence of logarithmic contributions to high order are also included.

Quadratic-in-spin effects in the orbital dynamics and gravitational-wave energy flux of compact binaries at the 3PN order

We investigate the dynamics of spinning binaries of compact objects at the next-to-leading order in the quadratic-in-spin effects, which corresponds to the third post-Newtonian order (3PN). Using a Dixon-type multipolar formalism for spinning point particles endowed with spin-induced quadrupoles and computing iteratively in harmonic coordinates the relevant pieces of the PN metric within the near zone, we derive the post-Newtonian equations of motion as well as the equations of spin precession. We find full equivalence with available results. We then focus on the far-zone field produced by those systems and obtain the previously unknown 3PN spin contributions to the gravitational-wave energy flux by means of the multipolar post-Minkowskian (MPM) wave generation formalism. Our results are presented in the center-of-mass frame for generic orbits, before being further specialized to the case of spin-aligned, circular orbits. We derive the orbital phase of the binary based on the energy balance equation and briefly discuss the relevance of the new terms.

Half-integral conservative post-Newtonian approximations in the redshift factor of black hole binaries

Recent perturbative self-force computations (Shah, Friedman & Whiting, submitted to Phys. Rev. {\bf D}, arXiv:1312.1952 [gr-qc]), both numerical and analytical, have determined that half-integral post-Newtonian terms arise in the conservative dynamics of black-hole binaries moving on exactly circular orbits. We look at the possible origin of these terms within the post-Newtonian approximation, find that they essentially originate from non-linear "tail-of-tail" integrals and show that, as demonstrated in the previous paper, their first occurrence is at the 5.5PN order. The post-Newtonian method we use is based on a multipolar-post-Minkowskian treatment of the field outside a general matter source, which is re-expanded in the near zone and extended inside the source thanks to a matching argument. Applying the formula obtained for generic sources to compact binaries, we obtain the redshift factor of circular black hole binaries (without spins) at 5.5PN order in the extreme mass ratio limit. Our result fully agrees with the determination of the 5.5PN coefficient by means of perturbative self-force computations reported in the previously cited paper.

High-order half-integral conservative post-Newtonian coefficients in the redshift factor of black hole binaries

The post-Newtonian approximation is still the most widely used approach to obtaining explicit solutions in general relativity, especially for the relativistic two-body problem with arbitrary mass ratio. Within many of its applications, it is often required to use a regularization procedure. Though frequently misunderstood, the regularization is essential for waveform generation without reference to the internal structure of orbiting bodies. In recent years, direct comparison with the self-force approach, constructed specifically for highly relativistic particles in the extreme mass ratio limit, has enabled preliminary confirmation of the foundations of both computational methods, including their very independent regularization procedures, with high numerical precision. In this paper, we build upon earlier work to carry this comparison still further, by examining next-to-next-to-leading order contributions beyond the half integral 5.5PN conservative effect, which arise from terms to cubic and higher orders in the metric and its multipole moments, thus extending scrutiny of the post-Newtonian methods to one of the highest orders yet achieved. We do this by explicitly constructing tail-of-tail terms at 6.5PN and 7.5PN order, computing the redshift factor for compact binaries in the small mass ratio limit, and comparing directly with numerically and analytically computed terms in the self-force approach, obtained using solutions for metric perturbations in the Schwarzschild space-time, and a combination of exact series representations possibly with more typical PN expansions. While self-force results may be relativistic but with restricted mass ratio, our methods, valid primarily in the weak-field slowly-moving regime, are nevertheless in principle applicable for arbitrary mass ratios.

Gravitational waves from spinning compact object binaries: New post-Newtonian results

We report on recent results obtained in the post-Newtonian framework for the modelling of the gravitational waves emitted by binary systems of spinning compact objects (black holes and/or neutron stars). These new results are obtained at the spin-orbit (linear-in-spin) level and solving Einstein's field equations iteratively in harmonic coordinates as well as the multipolar post-Newtonian formalism. The dynamics of the binary was tackled at the next-to-next-to-leading order, corresponding to the 3.5 post-Newtonian (PN) order for maximally spinning objects, and the result is found to be consistent with a previously obtained reduced Hamiltonian in the ADM approach. The corresponding contribution to the energy flux emitted by the binary was obtained at the 3.5PN order, as well as the next-to-leading 4PN tail contribution to this flux, an imprint of the non-linearity in the propagation of the wave. These new terms can be used to build more accurate PN templates for the next generation of gravitational wave detectors. We give an illustrative estimate of the quantitative relevance of the new terms in the orbital phasing of the binary.

Next-to-next-to-leading order spin-orbit effects in the equations of motion of compact binary systems

We compute next-to-next-to-leading order spin contributions to the post-Newtonian equations of motion for binaries of compact objects, such as black holes or neutron stars. For maximally spinning black holes, those contributions are of third-and-a-half post-Newtonian (3.5PN) order, improving our knowledge of the equations of motion, already known for non-spinning objects up to this order. Building on previous work, we represent the rotation of the two bodies using a pole-dipole matter stress-energy tensor, and iterate Einstein's field equations for a set of potentials parametrizing the metric in harmonic coordinates. Checks of the result include the existence of a conserved energy, the approximate global Lorentz invariance of the equations of motion in harmonic coordinates, and the recovery of the motion of a spinning object on a Kerr background in the test-mass limit. We verified the existence of a contact transformation, together with a redefinition of the spin variables that makes our result equivalent to a previously published reduced Hamiltonian, obtained from the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism.

Spin effects on gravitational waves from inspiraling compact binaries at second post-Newtonian order

We calculate the gravitational waveform for spinning, precessing compact binary inspirals through second post-Newtonian order in the amplitude. When spins are collinear with the orbital angular momentum and the orbits are quasi-circular, we further provide explicit expressions for the gravitational-wave polarizations and the decomposition into spin-weighted spherical-harmonic modes. Knowledge of the second post-Newtonian spin terms in the waveform could be used to improve the physical content of analytical templates for data analysis of compact binary inspirals and for more accurate comparisons with numerical-relativity simulations.

Effective action approach to higher-order relativistic tidal interactions in binary systems and their effective one body description

The gravitational-wave signal from inspiralling neutron-star--neutron-star (or black-hole--neutron-star) binaries will be influenced by tidal coupling in the system. An important science goal in the gravitational-wave detection of these systems is to obtain information about the equation of state of neutron star matter via the measurement of the tidal polarizability parameters of neutron stars. To extract this piece of information will require to have accurate analytical descriptions of both the motion and the radiation of tidally interacting binaries. We improve the analytical description of the late inspiral dynamics by computing the next-to-next-to-leading order relativistic correction to the tidal interaction energy. Our calculation is based on an effective-action approach to tidal interactions, and on its transcription within the effective-one-body formalism. We find that second-order relativistic effects (quadratic in the relativistic gravitational potential $u=G(m_1 +m_2)/(c^2 r)$) significantly increase the effective tidal polarizability of neutron stars by a distance-dependent amplification factor of the form $1 + α_1 \, u + α_2 \, u^2 +...$ where, say for an equal-mass binary, $α_1=5/4=1.25$ (as previously known) and $α_2=85/14\simeq6.07143$ (as determined here for the first time). We argue that higher-order relativistic effects will lead to further amplification, and we suggest a Padé-type way of resumming them. We recommend to test our results by comparing resolution-extrapolated numerical simulations of inspiralling-binary neutron stars to their effective one body description.

Post-Newtonian prediction for the (2,2) mode of the gravitational wave emitted by compact binaries

We present our 3.5PN computation of the (2,2) mode of the gravitational wave amplitude emitted by compact binaries, on quasi-circular orbits and in the absence of spins. We use the multipolar post-Newtonian wave generation formalism, extending and building on previous works which computed the 3PN order. This calculation required the extension of the multipolar post-Minkowskian algorithm, as well as the computation of the mass source quadrupole at 3.5PN order. Our result will allow more accurate comparisons to numerical relativity, and is a first step towards the computation of the full 3.5PN waveform amplitude, which would improve the estimation of the source parameters by gravitational wave detectors.

The third and a half post-Newtonian gravitational wave quadrupole mode for quasi-circular inspiralling compact binaries

We compute the quadrupole mode of the gravitational waveform of inspiralling compact binaries at the third and a half post-Newtonian (3.5PN) approximation of general relativity. The computation is performed using the multipolar post-Newtonian formalism, and restricted to binaries without spins moving on quasi-circular orbits. The new inputs mainly include the 3.5PN terms in the mass quadrupole moment of the source, and the control of required subdominant corrections to the contributions of hereditary integrals (tails and non-linear memory effect). The result is given in the form of the quadrupolar mode (2,2) in a spin-weighted spherical harmonic decomposition of the waveform, and may be used for comparison with the counterpart quantity computed in numerical relativity. It is a step towards the computation of the full 3.5PN waveform, whose knowledge is expected to reduce the errors on the location parameters of the source.

The third post-Newtonian gravitational wave polarisations and associated spherical harmonic modes for inspiralling compact binaries in quasi-circular orbits

The gravitational waveform (GWF) generated by inspiralling compact binaries moving in quasi-circular orbits is computed at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) approximation to general relativity. Our motivation is two-fold: (i) To provide accurate templates for the data analysis of gravitational wave inspiral signals in laser interferometric detectors; (ii) To provide the associated spin-weighted spherical harmonic decomposition to facilitate comparison and match of the high post-Newtonian prediction for the inspiral waveform to the numerically-generated waveforms for the merger and ringdown. This extension of the GWF by half a PN order (with respect to previous work at 2.5PN order) is based on the algorithm of the multipolar post-Minkowskian formalism, and mandates the computation of the relations between the radiative, canonical and source multipole moments for general sources at 3PN order. We also obtain the 3PN extension of the source multipole moments in the case of compact binaries, and compute the contributions of hereditary terms (tails, tails-of-tails and memory integrals) up to 3PN order. The end results are given for both the complete plus and cross polarizations and the separate spin-weighted spherical harmonic modes.

Third post-Newtonian spin-orbit effect in the gravitational radiation flux of compact binaries

Gravitational waves contain tail effects that are due to the backscattering of linear waves in the curved space-time geometry around the source. The knowledge as well as the accuracy of the two-body inspiraling post-Newtonian (PN) dynamics and of the gravitational-wave signal has been recently improved, notably by computing the spin-orbit (SO) terms induced by tail effects in the gravitational-wave energy flux at the 3PN order. Here we sketch this derivation, which yields the phasing formula including SO tail effects through the same 3PN order. Those results can be employed to improve the accuracy of analytical templates aimed at describing the whole process of inspiral, merger, and ringdown.

Higher-order spin effects in the amplitude and phase of gravitational waveforms emitted by inspiraling compact binaries: Ready-to-use gravitational waveforms

We provide ready-to-use time-domain gravitational waveforms for spinning compact binaries with precession effects through 1.5PN order in amplitude and compute their mode decomposition using spin-weighted -2 spherical harmonics. In the presence of precession, the gravitational-wave modes (l,m) contain harmonics originating from combinations of the orbital frequency and precession frequencies. We find that the gravitational radiation from binary systems with large mass asymmetry and large inclination angle can be distributed among several modes. For example, during the last stages of inspiral, for some maximally spinning configurations, the amplitude of the (2,0) and (2,1) modes can be comparable to the amplitude of the (2,2) mode. If the mass ratio is not too extreme, the l=3 and l=4 modes are generally one or two orders of magnitude smaller than the l = 2 modes. Restricting ourselves to spinning, non-precessing compact binaries, we apply the stationary-phase approximation and derive the frequency-domain gravitational waveforms including spin-orbit and spin(1)- spin(2) effects through 1.5PN and 2PN order respectively in amplitude, and 2.5PN order in phase. Since spin effects in the amplitude through 2PN order affect only the first and second harmonics of the orbital phase, they do not extend the mass reach of gravitational-wave detectors. However, they can interfere with other harmonics and lower or raise the signal-to-noise ratio depending on the spin orientation. These ready-to-use waveforms could be employed in the data-analysis of the spinning, inspiraling binaries as well as in comparison studies at the interface between analytical and numerical relativity.

Tail-induced spin-orbit effect in the gravitational radiation of compact binaries

Gravitational waves contain tail effects which are due to the back-scattering of linear waves in the curved space-time geometry around the source. In this paper we improve the knowledge and accuracy of the two-body inspiraling post-Newtonian (PN) dynamics and gravitational-wave signal by computing the spin-orbit terms induced by tail effects. Notably, we derive those terms at 3PN order in the gravitational-wave energy flux, and 2.5PN and 3PN orders in the wave polarizations. This is then used to derive the spin-orbit tail effects in the phasing through 3PN order. Our results can be employed to carry out more accurate comparisons with numerical-relativity simulations and to improve the accuracy of analytical templates aimed at describing the whole process of inspiral, merger and ringdown.

Higher-order spin effects in the dynamics of compact binaries II. Radiation field

Motivated by the search for gravitational waves emitted by binary black holes, we investigate the gravitational radiation field of point particles with spins within the framework of the multipolar-post-Newtonian wave generation formalism. We compute: (i) the spin-orbit (SO) coupling effects in the binary's mass and current quadrupole moments one post-Newtonian (1PN) order beyond the dominant effect, (ii) the SO contributions in the gravitational-wave energy flux and (iii) the secular evolution of the binary's orbital phase up to 2.5PN order. Crucial ingredients for obtaining the 2.5PN contribution in the orbital phase are the binary's energy and the spin precession equations, derived in paper I of this series. These results provide more accurate gravitational-wave templates to be used in the data analysis of rapidly rotating Kerr-type black-hole binaries with the ground-based detectors LIGO, Virgo, GEO 600 and TAMA300, and the space-based detector LISA.

Gravitational-Wave Inspiral of Compact Binary Systems to 7/2 Post-Newtonian Order

The inspiral of compact binaries, driven by gravitational-radiation reaction, is investigated through 7/2 post-Newtonian (3.5PN) order beyond the quadrupole radiation. We outline the derivation of the 3.5PN-accurate binary's center-of-mass energy and emitted gravitational flux. The analysis consistently includes the relativistic effects in the binary's equations of motion and multipole moments, as well as the contributions of tails, and tails of tails, in the wave zone. However the result is not fully determined because of some physical incompleteness, present at the 3PN order, of the model of point-particle and the associated Hadamard-type self-field regularization. The orbital phase, whose prior knowledge is crucial for searching and analyzing the inspiral signal, is computed from the standard energy balance argument.
