Modular $S_4$ and $A_4$ Symmetries and Their Fixed Points: New Predictive Examples of Lepton Mixing

In the modular symmetry approach to neutrino models, the flavour symmetry emerges as a finite subgroup $Γ_N$ of the modular symmetry, broken by the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of a modulus field $τ$. If the VEV of the modulus $τ$ takes some special value, a residual subgroup of $Γ_N$ would be preserved. We derive the fixed points $τ_S=i$, $τ_{ST}=(-1+i\sqrt{3})/2$, $τ_{TS}=(1+i\sqrt{3})/2$, $τ_T=i\infty$ in the fundamental domain which are invariant under the modular transformations indicated. We then generalise these fixed points to $τ_f=γτ_S$, $γτ_{ST}$, $γτ_{TS}$ and $γτ_{T}$ in the upper half complex plane, and show that it is sufficient to consider $γ\inΓ_{N}$. Focussing on level $N=4$, corresponding to the flavour group $S_4$, we consider all the resulting triplet modular forms at these fixed points up to weight 6. We then apply the results to lepton mixing, with different residual subgroups in the charged lepton sector and each of the right-handed neutrinos sectors. In the minimal case of two right-handed neutrinos, we find three phenomenologically viable cases in which the light neutrino mass matrix only depends on three free parameters, and the lepton mixing takes the trimaximal TM1 pattern for two examples. One of these cases corresponds to a new Littlest Modular Seesaw based on CSD$(n)$ with $n=1+\sqrt{6}\approx 3.45$, intermediate between CSD$(3)$ and CSD$(4)$. Finally, we generalize the results to examples with three right-handed neutrinos, also considering the level $N=3$ case, corresponding to $A_4$ flavour symmetry.

Decomposition of $d=9$ short-range $0νββ$ decay operators at one-loop level

We perform a systematical study of the dimension-9 short-range $0νββ$ decay operators at one-loop level. There are only six genuine topologies which generate eight diagrams, and the recipe to identify the possible one-loop realizations of the $0νββ$ decay operators is sketched. Certain hypercharge assignments are excluded by the absence of tree-level diagrams in a genuine one-loop model. The mediators of each decomposition can generate Majorana neutrino masses which are discussed up to two-loop level. We present an example of $0νββ$ decay model in which the neutrino masses are generated at two-loop level, and the short-range contribution can be comparable with the mass mechanism in some region of parameter space.

Modular flavor symmetry and vector-valued modular forms

We revisit the modular flavor symmetry from a more general perspective. The scalar modular forms of principal congruence subgroups are extended to the vector-valued modular forms, then we have more possible finite modular groups including $Γ_N$ and $Γ'_N$ as the flavor symmetry. The theory of vector-valued modular forms provide a method of differential equation to construct the modular multiplets, and it also reveals the simple structure of the modular invariant mass models. We review the theory of vector-valued modular forms and give general results for the lower dimensional vector-valued modular forms. The general finite modular groups are listed up to order 72. We apply the formalism to construct two new lepton mass models based on the finite modular groups $A_4\times Z_2$ and $GL(2,3)$.

A New Littlest Seesaw Model

We propose and discuss a new Littlest Seesaw model, realised in the tri-direct CP approach, in which the couplings of the two right-handed neutrinos to the lepton doublets are proportional to $(0,-1,1)$ and $(1,5/2,-1/2)$ respectively with the relative phase $η=-π/2$. This model can give an excellent description of lepton flavour mixing, including an atmospheric neutrino mixing angle in the second octant, in terms of only two input parameters. We show that the observed baryon asymmetry can be generated for the lightest right-handed neutrino mass $M_{1}=1.176\times 10^{11}$ GeV in SM and $M_{1}=3.992\times 10^{10}$ GeV in MSSM with $\tanβ=5$. We construct an explicit Littlest Seesaw model based on the flavour symmetry $S_4\times Z_4\times Z_9$ in which the desired alignments and the phase $η=-π/2$ are achieved.

Automorphic Forms and Fermion Masses

We extend the framework of modular invariant supersymmetric theories to encompass invariance under more general discrete groups $Γ$, that allow the presence of several moduli and make connection with the theory of automorphic forms. Moduli span a coset space $G/K$, where $G$ is a Lie group and $K$ is a compact subgroup of $G$, modded out by $Γ$. For a general choice of $G$, $K$, $Γ$ and a generic matter content, we explicitly construct a minimal Kähler potential and a general superpotential, for both rigid and local $N=1$ supersymmetric theories. We also specialize our construction to the case $G=Sp(2g,R)$, $K=U(g)$ and $Γ=Sp(2g,Z)$, whose automorphic forms are Siegel modular forms. We show how our general theory can be consistently restricted to multi-dimensional regions of the moduli space enjoying residual symmetries. After choosing $g=2$, we present several examples of models for lepton and quark masses where Yukawa couplings are Siegel modular forms of level 2.

Half-integral weight modular forms and application to neutrino mass models

We generalize the modular invariance approach to include the half-integral weight modular forms. Accordingly the modular group should be extended to its metaplectic covering group for consistency. We introduce the well-defined half-integral weight modular forms for congruence subgroup $Γ(4N)$ and show that they can be decomposed into the irreducible multiplets of finite metaplectic group $\widetildeΓ_{4N}$. We construct concrete expressions of the half-integral/integral modular forms for $Γ(4)$ up to weight 6 and arrange them into the irreducible representations of $\widetildeΓ_4$. We present three typical models with $\widetildeΓ_4$ modular symmetry for neutrino masses and mixing, and the phenomenological predictions of each model are analyzed numerically.

Modular Invariant Models of Leptons at Level 7

We consider for the first time level 7 modular invariant flavour models where the lepton mixing originates from the breaking of modular symmetry and couplings responsible for lepton masses are modular forms. The latter are decomposed into irreducible multiplets of the finite modular group $Γ_7$, which is isomorphic to $PSL(2,Z_{7})$, the projective special linear group of two dimensional matrices over the finite Galois field of seven elements, containing 168 elements, sometimes written as $PSL_2(7)$ or $Σ(168)$. At weight 2, there are 26 linearly independent modular forms, organised into a triplet, a septet and two octets of $Γ_7$. A full list of modular forms up to weight 8 are provided. Assuming the absence of flavons, the simplest modular-invariant models based on $Γ_7$ are constructed, in which neutrinos gain masses via either the Weinberg operator or the type-I seesaw mechanism, and their predictions compared to experiment.

Testing Moduli and Flavon Dynamics with Neutrino Oscillations

We study scalar Non-Standard Neutrino Interactions (NSI) induced by moduli or flavon exchange between electrons and neutrinos. In a region with non-vanishing electron number density, they are known to determine a shift of the neutrino mass matrix. We review and extend the relevant formalism, and we update the existing limits on electron and neutrino scalar couplings. We explore the observability of scalar NSI in models of lepton masses based on flavour symmetries. We analyze models where the scalar couplings are constrained either by abelian symmetries or by modular invariance. We highlight regions of the parameter space where observable effects can occur.

$A_4$ and CP symmetry and a model with maximal CP violation

We study a second CP symmetry compatible with the $A_4$ flavor group, which interchanges the representations $\mathbf{1}'$ and $\mathbf{1}"$. We analyze the lepton mixing patterns arising from the $A_4$ and CP symmetry broken to residual subgroups $Z_3$ and $Z_2\times CP$ in the charged lepton and neutrino sectors respectively. One phenomenologically viable mixing pattern is found, and it predicts maximal atmospheric mixing angle as well as maximal Dirac CP phase, trivial Majorana phase and the correlation $\sin^2θ_{12}\cos^2θ_{13}=1/3$. We construct a concrete model based on the $A_4$ and CP symmetry, the above interesting mixing pattern is achieved, the observed charged lepton mass hierarchy is reproduced, and the reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ is of the correct order.

Classifying CP transformations according to their texture zeros: theory and implications

We provide a classification of generalized CP symmetries preserved by the neutrino mass matrix according to the number of zero entries in the associated transformation matrix. We determine the corresponding constrained form of the lepton mixing matrix, characterized by correlations between the mixing angles and the CP violating phases. We compare with the corresponding restrictions from current neutrino oscillation global fits and show that, in some cases, the Dirac CP phase characterizing oscillations is highly constrained. Implications for current and upcoming long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments T2K, NO$ν$A and DUNE, as well as neutrinoless double beta decay experiments are discussed. We also study the cosmological implications of such schemes for leptogenesis.

CP Symmetry and Lepton Mixing from a Scan of Finite Discrete Groups

Including the generalized CP symmetry, we have performed a comprehensive scan of leptonic mixing patterns which can be obtained from finite discrete groups with order less than 2000. Both the semidirect approach and its variant are considered. The lepton mixing matrices which can admit a good agreement with experimental data can be organized into eight different categories up to possible row and column permutations. These viable mixing patterns can be completely obtained from the discrete flavor groups $Δ(6n^2)$, $D^{(1)}_{9n,3n}$, $A_5$ and $Σ(168)$ combined with CP symmetry. We perform a detailed analytical and numerical analysis for each possible mixing pattern. The resulting predictions for lepton mixing parameter, neutrinoless double decay and flavored leptogenesis are studied.

Leptogenesis and residual CP symmetry

We discuss flavour dependent leptogenesis in the framework of lepton flavour models based on discrete flavour and CP symmetries applied to the type-I seesaw model. Working in the flavour basis, we analyse the case of two general residual CP symmetries in the neutrino sector, which corresponds to all possible semi-direct models based on a preserved $Z_2$ in the neutrino sector, together with a CP symmetry, which constrains the PMNS matrix up to a single free parameter which may be fixed by the reactor angle. We systematically study and classify this case for all possible residual CP symmetries, and show that the $R$-matrix is tightly constrained up to a single free parameter, with only certain forms being consistent with successful leptogenesis, leading to possible connections between leptogenesis and PMNS parameters. The formalism is completely general in the sense that the two residual CP symmetries could result from any high energy discrete flavour theory which respects any CP symmetry. As a simple example, we apply the formalism to a high energy $S_4$ flavour symmetry with a generalized CP symmetry, broken to two residual CP symmetries in the neutrino sector, recovering familiar results for PMNS predictions, together with new results for flavour dependent leptogenesis.

Lepton Mixing Predictions from Infinite Group Series $D^{(1)}_{9n, 3n}$ with Generalized CP

We have performed a comprehensive analysis of the type D group $D^{(1)}_{9n, 3n}$ as flavor symmetry and the generalized CP symmetry. All possible residual symmetries and their consequences for the prediction of the mixing parameters are studied. We find that only one type of mixing pattern is able to accommodate the measured values of the mixing angles in both "direct" and "variant of semidirect" approaches, and four types of mixing patterns are phenomenologically viable in the "semidirect" approach. The admissible values of the mixing angles as well as CP violating phases are studied in detail for each case. It is remarkable that the first two smallest $D^{(1)}_{9n,3n}$ groups with $n=1, 2$ can fits the experimental data very well. The phenomenological predictions for neutrinoless double beta decay are discussed.

Deviation from Bimaximal Mixing and Leptonic CP Phases in $S_4$ Family Symmetry and Generalized CP

The lepton flavor mixing matrix having one row or one column in common with the bimaximal mixing up to permutations is still compatible with the present neutrino oscillation data. We provide a thorough exploration of generating such a mixing matrix from $S_4$ family symmetry and generalized CP symmetry $H_{CP}$. Supposing that $S_4\rtimes H_{CP}$ is broken down to $Z^{ST^2SU}_2\times H^ν_{CP}$ in the neutrino sector and $Z^{TST^{2}U}_4\rtimes H^{l}_{CP}$ in the charged lepton sector, one column of the PMNS matrix would be of the form $\left(1/2, 1/\sqrt{2}, 1/2\right)^{T}$ up to permutations, both Dirac CP phase and Majorana CP phases are trivial in order to accommodate the observed lepton mixing angles. The phenomenological implications of the remnant symmetry $K^{(TST^2, T^2U)}_4\rtimes H^ν_{CP}$ in the neutrino sector and $Z^{SU}_{2}\times H^{l}_{CP}$ in the charged lepton sector are studied. One row of PMNS matrix is determined to be $\left(1/2, 1/2, -i/\sqrt{2}\right)$, and all the three leptonic CP phases can only be trivial to fit the measured values of the mixing angles. Two models based on $S_4$ family symmetry and generalized CP are constructed to implement these model independent predictions enforced by remnant symmetry. The correct mass hierarchy among the charged leptons is achieved. The vacuum alignment and higher order corrections are discussed.

Generalized $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry and leptonic CP violation

We propose a generalized $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry to constrain the lepton flavor mixing parameters. We obtain a new correlation between the atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$ and the "Dirac" CP violation phase $δ_{\rm CP}$. Only in a specific limit our proposed CP transformation reduces to standard $μ-τ$ reflection, for which $θ_{23}$ and $δ_{CP}$ are both maximal. The "Majorana" phases are predicted to lie at their CP-conserving values with important implications for the neutrinoless double beta decay rates. We also study the phenomenological implications of our scheme for present and future neutrino oscillation experiments including T2K, NO$ν$A and DUNE.

Generalized CP and $Δ(3n^2)$ Family Symmetry for Semi-Direct Predictions of the PMNS Matrix

The generalized CP transformations can only be consistently defined in the context of $Δ(3n^2)$ lepton symmetry if a certain subset of irreducible representations are present in a model. We perform a comprehensive analysis of the possible automorphisms and the corresponding CP transformations of the $Δ(3n^2)$ group. It is sufficient to only consider three automorphisms if $n$ is not divisible by 3 while additional eight types of CP transformations could be imposed for the case of $n$ divisible by 3. We study the lepton mixing patterns which can be derived from the $Δ(3n^2)$ family symmetry and generalized CP in the semi-direct approach. The PMNS matrix is determined to be the trimaximal pattern for all the possible CP transformations, and it can only take two distinct forms.

Lepton and Quark Mixing Patterns from Finite Flavor Symmetries

We perform a systematical and analytical study of lepton mixing which can be derived from the subgroups of $SU(3)$ under the assumption that neutrinos are Dirac particles. We find that type D groups can predict lepton mixing patterns compatible with the experimental data at $3σ$ level. The lepton mixing matrix turns out to be of the trimaximal form, and the Dirac CP violating phase is trivial. Moreover, we extend the flavor symmetry to the quark sector. The Cabibbo mixing between the first two generations of quarks can be generated by type D groups. Since all the finite subgroups of $U(3)$ which are not the subgroups of $SU(3)$ have not been classified, an exhaustive scan over all finite discrete groups up to order 2000 is performed with the help of the computer algebra system \texttt{GAP}. We find that only 90 (10) groups for Dirac (Majorana) neutrinos can generate the lepton mixing angles in the experimentally preferred ranges. The lepton mixing matrix is still the trimaximal pattern and the Dirac CP phase remains trivial. The smallest groups which lead to viable mixing angles are $[162, 10]$, $[162, 12]$ and $[162, 14]$. For quark flavor mixing, the correct order of magnitude of the CKM matrix elements can not be generated. Only the Cabibbo mixing is allowed even if we impose very loose constraints $0.1\leq|\left(V_{CKM}\right)_{12}|\leq0.3$ and $|\left(V_{CKM}\right)_{13}|\leq|\left(V_{CKM}\right)_{23}|<|\left(V_{CKM}\right)_{12}|$. The group $Δ(6\cdot7^2)$ can predict a Cabibbo angle $θ_q=π/14$ in good agreement with the best fit value. The groups which can give rise to both phenomenologically viable lepton mixing angles and acceptable Cabibbo angle are discussed, and the groups $Δ(6\cdot9^2)$, $[648, 259]$, $[648, 260]$, $[648, 266]$ and $Δ(6\cdot14^2)$ are especially promising.

Lepton Mixing in $A_5$ Family Symmetry and Generalized CP

We study lepton mixing patterns which can be derived from the $A_5$ family symmetry and generalized CP. We find five phenomenologically interesting mixing patterns for which one column of the PMNS matrix is $(\sqrt{\frac{5+\sqrt{5}}{10}},\frac{1}{\sqrt{5+\sqrt{5}}},\frac{1}{\sqrt{5+\sqrt{5}}})^{T}$ (the first column of the golden ratio mixing), $(\sqrt{\frac{5-\sqrt{5}}{10}},\frac{1}{\sqrt{5-\sqrt{5}}},\frac{1}{\sqrt{5-\sqrt{5}}})^{T}$ (the second column of the golden ratio mixing), $(1,1,1)^{T}/\sqrt{3}$ or $(\sqrt{5}+1,-2,\sqrt{5}-1)^{T}/4$. The three lepton mixing angles are determined in terms of a single real parameter $θ$, and agreement with experimental data can be achieved for certain values of $θ$. The Dirac CP violating phase is predicted to be trivial or maximal while Majorana phases are trivial. We construct a supersymmetric model based on $A_5$ family symmetry and generalized CP. The lepton mixing is exactly the golden ratio pattern at leading order, and the mixing patterns of case III and case IV are reproduced after higher order corrections are considered.

Neutrino Mixing from CP Symmetry

The neutrino mass matrix has remnant CP symmetry expressed in terms of the lepton mixing matrix, and vice versa the remnant CP transformations allow us to reconstruct the mixing matrix. We study the scenario that all the four remnant CP transformations are preserved by the neutrino mass matrix. The most general parameterization of remnant CP transformations is presented. The lepton mixing matrix is completely fixed by the remnant CP, and its explicit form is derived. The necessary and sufficient condition for conserved Dirac CP violating phase is found. If the Klein four flavor symmetry generated by the postulated remnant CP transformations arises from a finite flavor symmetry group, the phenomenologically viable lepton flavor mixing would be the trimaximal pattern, both Dirac CP phase $δ_{CP}$ and Majorana phase $α_{31}$ are either $0$ or $π$ while another Majorana phase $α_{21}$ is a rational multiple of $π$. These general results are confirmed to be true in the case that the finite flavor symmetry group is $Δ(6n^2)$.

Warped flavor symmetry predictions for neutrino physics

A realistic five-dimensional warped scenario with all standard model fields propagating in the bulk is proposed. Mass hierarchies would in principle be accounted for by judicious choices of the bulk mass parameters, while fermion mixing angles are restricted by a $Δ(27)$ flavor symmetry broken on the branes by flavon fields. The latter gives stringent predictions for the neutrino mixing parameters, and the Dirac CP violation phase, all described in terms of only two independent parameters at leading order. The scheme also gives an adequate CKM fit and should be testable within upcoming oscillation experiments.

Generalised CP and $A_4$ Family Symmetry

We perform a comprehensive study of family symmetry models based on $A_4$ combined with the generalised CP symmetry $H_{\rm{CP}}$. We investigate the lepton mixing parameters which can be obtained from the original symmetry $A_4\rtimes H_{\rm{CP}}$ breaking to different remnant symmetries in the neutrino and charged lepton sectors. We find that only one case is phenomenologically viable, namely $G^ν_{\rm{CP}}\cong Z^{S}_2\times H^ν_{\rm{CP}}$ in the neutrino sector and $G^{l}_{\rm{CP}}\cong Z^{T}_3\rtimes H^{l}_{\rm{CP}}$ in the charged lepton sector, leading to the prediction of no CP violation, namely $δ_{CP}$ and the Majorana phases $α_{21}$ and $α_{31}$ are all equal to either zero or $π$. We then propose an effective supersymmetric model based on the symmetry $A_4\rtimes H_{\rm{CP}}$ in which trimaximal lepton mixing is predicted together with either zero CP violation or $δ_{CP}\simeq\pm π/2$ with non-trivial Majorana phases. An ultraviolet completion of the effective model yields a neutrino mass matrix which depends on only three real parameters. As a result of this, all three CP phases and the absolute neutrino mass scale are determined, the atmospheric mixing angle is maximal, and the Dirac CP can either be preserved with $δ_{CP}=0,π$ or maximally broken with $δ_{CP}=\pm π/2$ and sharp predictions for the Majorana phases and neutrinoless double beta decay.

Generalised CP and $Δ(6n^2)$ Family Symmetry in Semi-Direct Models of Leptons

We perform a detailed analysis of $Δ(6n^2)$ family symmetry combined with a generalised CP symmetry in the lepton sector, breaking to different remnant symmetries $G_ν$ in the neutrino and $G_{l}$ in the charged lepton sector, together with different remnant CP symmetries in each sector. We discuss the resulting mass and mixing predictions for $G_ν=Z_2$ with $G_{l}=K_4,Z_p,p>2$ and $G_ν=K_4$ with $G_{l}=Z_2$. All cases correspond to the preserved symmetry smaller than the full Klein symmetry, as in the semi-direct approach, leading to predictions which depend on a single undetermined real parameter, which mainly determines the reactor angle. We focus on five phenomenologically allowed cases for which we present the resulting predictions for the PMNS parameters as a function of $n$, as well as the predictions for neutrinoless double beta decay.

Generalised CP and $Δ(96)$ Family Symmetry

We perform a comprehensive study of the $Δ(96)$ family symmetry combined with the generalised CP symmetry $H_{\rm{CP}}$. We investigate the lepton mixing parameters which can be obtained from the original symmetry $Δ(96)\rtimes H_{\rm{CP}}$ breaking to different remnant symmetries in the neutrino and charged lepton sectors, namely $G_ν$ and $G_l$ subgroups in the neutrino and the charged lepton sector respectively, and the remnant CP symmetries from the breaking of $H_{\rm{CP}}$ are $H^ν_{\rm{CP}}$ and $H^{l}_{\rm{CP}}$, respectively, where all cases correspond to a preserved symmetry smaller than the full Klein symmetry, as in the semi-direct approach, leading to predictions which depend on a single undetermined real parameter, which may be fitted to the reactor angle for example. We discuss 26 possible cases, including a global $χ^2$ determination of the best fit parameters and the correlations between mixing parameters, in each case.

Generalised CP and Trimaximal TM$_1$ Lepton Mixing in $S_4$ Family Symmetry

We construct two flavor models based on $S_4$ family symmetry and generalised CP symmetry. In both models, the $S_4$ family symmetry is broken down to the $Z^{SU}_2$ subgroup in the neutrino sector, as a consequence, the trimaximal $\text{TM}_1$ lepton mixing is produced. Depending on the free parameters in the flavon potential, the Dirac CP is predicted to be either conserved or maximally broken, and the Majorana CP phases are trivial. The two models differ in the neutrino sector. The flavon fields are involved in the Dirac mass terms at leading order in the first model, and the neutrino mass matrix contains three real parameters such that the absolute neutrino masses are fixed. Nevertheless, the flavon fields enter into the Majorana mass terms at leading order in the second model. The leading order lepton mixing is of the tri-bimaximal form which is broken down to $\text{TM}_1$ by the next to leading order contributions.

Lepton Flavor Mixing and CP Symmetry

The strategy of constraining the lepton flavor mixing from remnant CP symmetry is investigated in a rather general way. The neutrino mass matrix generally admits four remnant CP transformations which can be derived from the measured lepton mixing matrix in the charged lepton diagonal basis. Conversely, the lepton mixing matrix can be reconstructed from the postulated remnant CP transformations. All mixing angles and CP violating phases can be completely determined by the full set of remnant CP transformations or three of them. When one or two remnant CP transformations are preserved, the resulting lepton mixing matrix would depend on three real parameters or one real parameter respectively in addition to the parameters characterizing the remnant CP, and the concrete form of the mixing matrix is presented. The phenomenological predictions for the mixing parameters are discussed. The conditions leading to vanishing or maximal Dirac CP violation are studied.

Lepton Mixing Parameters from $Δ(48)$ Family Symmetry and Generalised CP

We provide a systematic and thorough exploration of the $Δ(48)$ family symmetry and the consistent generalised CP symmetry. A model-independent analysis of the achievable lepton flavor mixing is performed by considering all the possible remnant symmetries in the neutrino and the charged lepton sectors. We find a new interesting mixing pattern in which both lepton mixing angles and CP phases are nontrivial functions of a single parameter $θ$. The value of $θ$ can be fixed by the measured reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$, and the excellent agreement with the present data can be achieved. A supersymmetric model based on $Δ(48)$ family symmetry and generalised CP symmetry is constructed, and this new mixing pattern is exactly reproduced.

Predicting Lepton Flavor Mixing from $Δ(48)$ and Generalized CP Symmetries

We propose to understand the mixing angles and CP-violating phases from the $Δ(48)$ family symmetry combined with the generalized CP symmetry. A model-independent analysis is performed by scanning all the possible symmetry breaking chains. We find a new mixing pattern with only one free parameter, excellent agreement with the observed mixing angles can be achieved and all the CP-violating phases are predicted to take nontrivial values. This mixing pattern is testable in the near future neutrino oscillation and neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments. Finally, a flavor model is constructed to realize this mixing pattern.

Spontaneous CP violation from vacuum alignment in $S_4$ models of leptons

We construct models of leptons based on $S_4$ family symmetry combined with a generalised CP symmetry $H_{CP}$. We show how the flavon potential can spontaneously break the symmetry $S_4 \rtimes H_{CP}$ down to $Z_2 \times H^ν_{CP}$ in the neutrino sector, where the choice of preserved CP symmetry $H^ν_{CP}$ is controlled by free (real) parameters in the flavon potential. We propose two realistic models of this kind, one at the effective level and one at the renormalisable level. Both models predict trimaximal lepton mixing with CP being either fully preserved or maximally broken, with the intermediate possibility forbidden by the structure of the models.

Bilarge Neutrino Mixing and Abelian Flavor Symmetry

We explore two bilarge neutrino mixing anz$\ddot{a}$tze within the context of Abelian flavor symmetry theories: ($\mathrm{\tt BL_1}$) $\sinθ_{12}\simλ$, $\sinθ_{13}\simλ$, $\sinθ_{23}\simλ$, and ($\mathrm{\tt BL_2}$) $\sinθ_{12}\simλ$, $\sinθ_{13}\simλ$, $\sinθ_{23}\sim 1-λ$. The first pattern is proposed by two of us and is favored if the atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$ lies in the first octant, while the second one is preferred for the second octant of $θ_{23}$. In order to reproduce the second texture, we find that the flavor symmetry should be $U(1)\times Z_m$, while for the first pattern the flavor symmetry should be extended to $U(1)\times Z_m\times Z_n$ with $m$ and $n$ of different parity. Explicit models for both mixing patterns are constructed based on the flavor symmetries $U(1)\times Z_3\times Z_4$ and $U(1)\times Z_2$. The models are extended to the quark sector within the framework of SU(5) grand unified theory in order to give a successful description of quark and lepton masses and mixing simultaneously. Phenomenological implications are discussed.

Dirac Neutrinos with $S_4$ Flavor Symmetry in Warped Extra Dimensions

We present a warped extra dimension model with the custodial symmetry $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_X\times P_{LR}$ based on the flavor symmetry $S_4\times Z_2\times Z'_2$, and the neutrinos are taken to be Dirac particles. At leading order, the democratic lepton mixing is derived exactly, and the high dimensional operators introduce corrections of order $λ_c$ to all the three lepton mixing angles such that agreement with the experimental data can be achieved. The neutrino mass spectrum is predicted to be of the inverted hierarchy and the second octant of $θ_{23}$ is preferred. We suggest the modified democratic mixing, which is obtained by permuting the second and the third rows of the democratic mixing matrix, should be a good first order approximation to understanding sizable $θ_{13}$ and the first octant of $θ_{23}$. The constraints on the model from the electroweak precision measurements are discussed. Furthermore, we investigate the lepton mixing patterns for all the possible residual symmetries $G_ν$ and $G_{l}$ in the neutrino and charged lepton sectors, respectively.

Bottomonium Spectrum with Coupled-Channel Effects

We study the bottomonium spectrum in the nonrelativistic quark model with the coupled-channel effects. The mass shifts and valence $b\bar{b}$ component are evaluated to be rather large. We find that the hadronic loop effects can be partially absorbed into a reselection of the model parameters. No bottomonium state except $Υ(5\,^1S_0)$ and $Υ(5\,^3S_1)$ with mass around 10890 MeV is found in the quark models both with and without coupled-channel effects, so we suggest that $Y_{b}(10890)$ is an exotic state beyond the quark model, if it is confirmed to be a new resonance. The predictions for the $χ_b(3P)$ masses are consistent with the ATLAS measurements. If some new bottomonium-like states are observed at LHCb or SuperB in the future, we can determine whether they are conventional bottomonium or exotic states by comparing their masses with the mass spectrum predicted in our work.

Golden Ratio Neutrino Mixing and $A_5$ Flavor Symmetry

We provide a systematic and thorough exploration of lepton flavor models in which the solar mixing angle is related to the golden ratio. For scenarios in which the solar mixing angle is given by the inverse cotangent of the golden ratio, we demonstrate that $A_5$ is the smallest non-Abelian finite group that contains all of the symmetries necessary to enforce this specific lepton mixing pattern. Within this context, we propose two lepton flavor models that yield this mixing pattern through the breaking of $A_5$ at leading order to the Klein four subgroup in the neutrino sector. Both models have triplet embeddings of the lepton doublets as well as the charged lepton singlets. In the charged lepton sector, the residual symmetry is $Z_5$ in the first model, while in the second model, $A_5$ is broken completely at leading order. For the second model, the reactor mixing angle vanishes at leading order and is of the order of the square of the Cabibbo angle at next-to-leading order, which is allowed by the global analysis of current lepton data.

We perform a comprehensive analysis of the Toorop-Feruglio-Hagedorn (TFH) mixing patterns within the family symmetry $Δ(96)$. The general neutrino mass matrix for the TFH mixing and its symmetry properties are investigated. The possible realizations of the TFH mixing in $Δ(96)$ are analyzed in the minimalist approach. We propose two dynamical models which produce the TFH mixing patterns at leading order. The full flavor symmetries are $Δ(96)\times Z_3\times Z_3$ and $Δ(96)\times Z_5 \times Z_2$ respectively. The next to leading order terms introduce corrections of order $λ^2_c$ to the three mixing angles in both models. The allowed mixing patterns are studied under the condition that the Klein four subgroups and the cyclic $Z_N$ subgroups with $N\geq3$ are preserved in the neutrino and the charged lepton sector respectively. We suggest that the deformed tri-bimaximal mixing is a good leading order approximation to understanding a largish reactor angle.

A Model for Tri-bimaximal Mixing from a Completely Broken $A_4$

We propose a new $A_4$ model in which both the right-handed neutrinos and right-handed charged leptons transform as $A_4$ singlets. We reproduce tri-bimaximal mixing pattern exactly although the $A_4$ symmetry is broken completely at leading order in both the neutrino and charged lepton sectors. The charged lepton mass hierarchies are controlled by the spontaneous breaking of the flavor symmetry. The light neutrino spectrum is predicted to be of normal type and the lightest neutrino is massless at leading order. Although the reactor angle $θ_{13}$ is expected to be of order $λ^2_c$ from the next to leading order corrections, this model cannot be ruled out by current experimental data including the latest T2K results. Leptogenesis is realized via the resonant leptogenesis of the second and the third heavy right-handed neutrinos which are degenerate at leading order. The phenomenological consequences for lepton flavor violation are discussed in detail.

Adjoint SUSY $SU(5)$ Grand Unified Model with $S_4$ Flavor Symmetry

We construct a supersymmetric (SUSY) $SU(5)$ model with the flavor symmetry $S_4\times Z_3\times Z_4$. Three generations of adjoint matter fields are introduced to generate the neutrino masses via the combined type I and type III see-saw mechanism. The first two generations of the the $\mathbf{10}$ dimensional representation in $SU(5)$ are assigned to be a doublet of $S_4$, the second family $\mathbf{10}$ is chose as the first component of the doublet, and the first family as the second component. Tri-bimaximal mixing in the neutrino sector is predicted exactly at leading order, charged lepton mixing leads to small deviation from the tri-bimaximal mixing pattern. Subleading contributions introduce corrections of order $λ^2_c$ to all three lepton mixing angles. The model also reproduces a realistic pattern of quark and charged lepton masses and quark mixings. The phenomenological implications of the model are analyzed in datail.

Discovery in Drell-Yan Processes at the LHC

We study the Drell-Yan process mediated by a new bosonic resonance at the LHC. The bosons of spin-0, 1, and 2 with the most general leading-order couplings to Standard Model fermions and gluons are considered, which provide a model-independent formulation for future exploration of the resonance properties, such as its spin, mass and couplings. In the case of neutral resonances, we demonstrate how the shapes of the kinematical distributions change as one varies the chiral couplings of the quarks and leptons, and show how to analyze the couplings by making use of the forward-backward asymmetry. In the case of charged resonances, we propose a novel technique to effectively reconstruct the angular distribution in the center-of-mass frame, to a large extent avoiding the two-fold ambiguity due to the missing neutrino. Similar to the case of a neutral resonance, the spin information of the resonance can be extracted unambiguously, and chiral couplings and the asymmetries can be explored in a statistical manner. With the current LHC data, we present bounds on the mass and cross section times branching fraction of the new resonance and estimate the future reach.

Renormalization Group Running of Lepton Mixing Parameters in See-Saw Models with $S_4$ Flavor Symmetry

We study the renormalization group running of the tri-bimaximal mixing predicted by the two typical $S_4$ flavor models at leading order. Although the textures of the mass matrices are completely different, the evolution of neutrino mass and mixing parameters is found to display approximately the same pattern. For both normal hierarchy and inverted hierarchy spectrum, the quantum corrections to both atmospheric and reactor neutrino mixing angles are so small that they can be neglected. The evolution of the solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$ depends on $\tanβ$ and neutrino mass spectrum, the deviation from its tri-bimaximal value could be large. Taking into account the renormalization group running effect, the neutrino spectrum is constrained by experimental data on $θ_{12}$ in addition to the self-consistency conditions of the models, and the inverted hierarchy spectrum is disfavored for large $\tanβ$. The evolution of light-neutrino masses is approximately described by a common scaling factor.

Tri-Bimaximal Neutrino Mixing and the $T_{13}$ Flavor Symmetry

We present a supersymmetric $T_{13}$ model for the tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing, and the complete flavor group is $T_{13}\times Z_{4}\times Z_2$. At leading order, the residual symmetry of the charged lepton sector is $Z_3$, and the $T_{13}$ symmetry is broken completely in the neutrino sector. The charged lepton mass hierarchies are determined by the spontaneous breaking of the flavor symmetry, both the type I see-saw mechanism and the Weinberg operator contribute to generating the light neutrino masses. Tri-bimaximal mixing is exact at leading order while subleading contributions introduce corrections of order $λ^2_c$ to the three lepton mixing angles. The vacuum alignment and subleading corrections are studied in detail, a moderate hierarchy of order $λ_c$ between the vacuum expectation values of the flavon fields in the charged lepton and neutrino sectors can be accommodated.

$X(1835)$ and the New Resonances $X(2120)$ and $X(2370)$ Observed by the BES Collaboration

We calculate the decay widths of both the second and the third radial excitations of $η$ and $η'$ within the framework of $^3P_0$ model. After comparing the theoretical decay widths and decay patterns with the available experimental data of $η(1760)$, $X(1835)$, $X(2120)$ and $X(2370)$, we find that the interpretation of $η(1760)$ and $X(1835)$ as the second radial excitation of $η$ and $η'$ crucially depends on the measured mass and width of $η(1760)$, which is still controversial experimentally. We suggest that there may be sizable $p\bar{p}$ content in $X(1835)$. $X(2120)$ and $X(2370)$ can not be understood as the third radial excitations of $η$ and $η'$, $X(2370)$ probably is a mixture of $η'(4{^1}{S}{_0})$ and glueball.

Bound States of the Heavy Flavor Vector Mesons and Y(4008) and $Z^{+}_1(4050)$

The $D^{*}\bar{D}^{*}$ and $B^{*}\bar{B}^{*}$ systems are studied dynamically in the one boson exchange model, where $π$, $η$, $σ$, $ρ$ and $ω$ exchanges are taken into account. Ten allowed states with low spin parity are considered. We suggest that the $1^{--}$, $2^{++}$, $0^{++}$ and $0^{-+}$ $B^{*}\bar{B}^{*}$ molecules should exist, and the $D^{*}\bar{D}^{*}$ bound states with the same quantum numbers very likely exist as well. However, the CP exotic ($1^{-+}$, $2^{+-}$) $B^{*}\bar{B}^{*}$ and $D^{*}\bar{D}^{*}$ states may not be bound by the one boson exchange potential. We find that the I=0 configuration is more deeply bound than the I=1 configuration, hence $Z^{+}_1(4050)$ may not be a $D^{*}\bar{D}^{*}$ molecule. Although Y(4008) is close to the $D^{*}\bar{D}^{*}$ threshold, the interpretation of Y(4008) as a $D^{*}\bar{D}^{*}$ molecule is not favored by its huge width. $1^{--}$ $D^{*}\bar{D}^{*}$ and $B^{*}\bar{B}^{*}$ states can be produced copiously in $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation, detailed scanning of the $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data near the $D^{*}\bar{D}^{*}$ and $B^{*}\bar{B}^{*}$ threshold is an important check to our predictions.

Lepton Flavor Violation in Models with $A_4$ and $S_4$ Flavor Symmetries

The lepton flavor violation $μ\to eγ$, $τ\to eγ$, $τ\toμγ$, $μ\to3e$, $τ\to3e$, $τ\to3μ$ and $μ-e$ conversion in Al and Ti are studied in both the Altarelli-Feruglio $A_4$ model and the $S_4$ model of Ding. The rates of these lepton flavor violation process for the inverted hierarchy neutrino mass spectrum are enhanced considerably by the next to leading order contributions. For both models, we find that the $μ-e$ conversion in Ti is within the precision of next generation experiments in all the parameter space considered, the $μ-e$ conversion in Al should be observable at least in a very significant part of the parameter space, whereas $τ\to eγ$, $τ\toμγ$, $τ\to3e$ and $τ\to3μ$ are below the expected future sensitivity. The detectability of $μ\to eγ$ and $μ\to3e$ in near future depends on the models and the neutrino mass spectrum. We suggest that a comprehensive consideration of the lepton flavor violation processes is important to test and distinguish both discrete flavor symmetry models.
