Holomorphic Anomalies, Fourfolds and Fluxes

We investigate holomorphic anomalies of partition functions underlying string compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds with background fluxes. For elliptic fourfolds the partition functions have an alternative interpretation as elliptic genera of N=1 supersymmetric string theories in four dimensions, or as generating functions for relative Gromov-Witten invariants of fourfolds with fluxes. We derive the holomorphic anomaly equations by starting from the BCOV formalism of topological strings, and translating them into geometrical terms. The result can be recast into modular and elliptic anomaly equations. As a new feature, as compared to threefolds, we find an extra contribution which is given by a gravitational descendant invariant. This leads to linear terms in the anomaly equations, which support an algebra of derivatives mapping between partition functions of the various flux sectors. These geometric features are mirrored by certain properties of quasi-Jacobi forms. We also offer an interpretation of the physics from the viewpoint of the worldsheet theory.

Quasi-Jacobi Forms, Elliptic Genera and Strings in Four Dimensions

We investigate the interplay between the enumerative geometry of Calabi-Yau fourfolds with fluxes and the modularity of elliptic genera in four-dimensional string theories. We argue that certain contributions to the elliptic genus are given by derivatives of modular or quasi-modular forms, which encode BPS invariants of Calabi-Yau or non-Calabi-Yau threefolds that are embedded in the given fourfold. As a result, the elliptic genus is only a quasi-Jacobi form, rather than a modular or quasi-modular one in the usual sense. This manifests itself as a holomorphic anomaly of the spectral flow symmetry, and in an elliptic holomorphic anomaly equation that maps between different flux sectors. We support our general considerations by a detailed study of examples, including non-critical strings in four dimensions. For the critical heterotic string, we explain how anomaly cancellation is restored due to the properties of the derivative sector. Essentially, while the modular sector of the elliptic genus takes care of anomaly cancellation involving the universal B-field, the quasi-Jacobi one accounts for additional B-fields that can be present. Thus once again, diverse mathematical ingredients, namely here the algebraic geometry of fourfolds, relative Gromow-Witten theory pertaining to flux backgrounds, and the modular properties of (quasi-)Jacobi forms, conspire in an intriguing manner precisely as required by stringy consistency.

Hidden exceptional symmetry in the pure spinor superstring

The pure spinor formulation of superstring theory includes an interacting sector of central charge $c_λ=22$, which can be realized as a curved $βγ$ system on the cone over the orthogonal Grassmannian $\text{OG}^{+}(5,10)$. We find that the spectrum of the $βγ$ system organizes into representations of the $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{e}_6$ affine algebra at level $-3$, whose $\mathfrak{so}(10)_{-3}\oplus {\mathfrak u}(1)_{-4}$ subalgebra encodes the rotational and ghost symmetries of the system. As a consequence, the pure spinor partition function decomposes as a sum of affine $\mathfrak{e}_6$ characters. We interpret this as an instance of a more general pattern of enhancements in curved $βγ$ systems, which also includes the cases $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{so}(8)$ and $\mathfrak{e}_7$, corresponding to target spaces that are cones over the complex Grassmannian $\text{Gr}(2,4)$ and the complex Cayley plane $\mathbb{OP}^2$. We identify these curved $βγ$ systems with the chiral algebras of certain $2d$ $(0,2)$ CFTs arising from twisted compactification of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs on $S^2$.

E + E $\rightarrow$ H

E-strings arise from M2 branes suspended between an M5 brane and an M9 plane. In this paper we obtain explicit expressions for the elliptic genus of two E-strings using a series of string dualities. Moreover we show how this can be used to recover the elliptic genus of two $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic strings using the Horava-Witten realization of heterotic strings in M-theory. This involves highly non-trivial identities among Jacobi forms, and is remarkable in light of the fact that E-strings are 'sticky' and form bound states whereas heterotic strings do not form bound states.

Strings of Minimal 6d SCFTs

We study strings associated with minimal 6d SCFTs, which by definition have only one string charge and no Higgs branch. These theories are labelled by a number n with 1 <= n <= 8 or n = 12. Quiver theories have previously been proposed which describe strings of SCFTs for n = 1, 2. For n > 2 the strings interact with the bulk gauge symmetry. In this paper we find a quiver description for the n = 4 string using Sen's limit of F-theory and calculate its elliptic genus with localization techniques. This result is checked using the duality of F-theory with M-theory and topological string theory whose refined BPS partition function captures the elliptic genus of the SCFT strings. We use the topological string theory to gain insight into the elliptic genus for other values of n.

M-Strings

M2 branes suspended between adjacent parallel M5 branes lead to light strings, the `M-strings'. In this paper we compute the elliptic genus of M-strings, twisted by maximally allowed symmetries that preserve 2d (2,0) supersymmetry. In a codimension one subspace of parameters this reduces to the elliptic genus of the (4,4) supersymmetric A_{n-1} quiver theory in 2d. We contrast the elliptic genus of N M-strings with the (4,4) sigma model on the N-fold symmetric product of R^4. For N=1 they are the same, but for N>1 they are close, but not identical. Instead the elliptic genus of (4,4) N M-strings is the same as the elliptic genus of (4,0) sigma models on the N-fold symmetric product of R^4, but where the right-moving fermions couple to a modification of the tangent bundle. This construction arises from a dual A_{n-1} quiver 6d gauge theory with U(1) gauge groups. Moreover we compute the elliptic genus of domain walls which separate different numbers of M2 branes on the two sides of the wall.

On orbifolds of M-Strings

We consider M-theory in the presence of M parallel M5-branes probing a transverse A_{N-1} singularity. This leads to a superconformal theory with (1,0) supersymmetry in six dimensions. We compute the supersymmetric partition function of this theory on a two-torus, with arbitrary supersymmetry preserving twists, using the topological vertex formalism. Alternatively, we show that this can also be obtained by computing the elliptic genus of an orbifold of recently studied M-strings. The resulting 2d theory is a (4,0) supersymmetric quiver gauge theory whose Higgs branch corresponds to strings propagating on the moduli space of SU(N)^{M-1} instantons on R^4 where the right-moving fermions are coupled to a particular bundle.

Superconformal Partition Functions and Non-perturbative Topological Strings

We propose a non-perturbative definition for refined topological strings. This can be used to compute the partition function of superconformal theories in 5 dimensions on squashed S^5 and the superconformal index of a large number of 6 dimensional (2,0) and (1,0) theories, including that of N coincident M5 branes. The result can be expressed as an integral over the product of three combinations of topological string amplitudes. SL(3,Z) modular transformations acting by inverting the coupling constants of the refined topological string play a key role.

Maximum black-hole spin from quasi-circular binary mergers

Black holes of mass M must have a spin angular momentum S below the Kerr limit chi = S/M^2 < 1, but whether astrophysical black holes can attain this limiting spin depends on their accretion history. Gas accretion from a thin disk limits the black-hole spin to chi_gas < 0.9980 +- 0.0002, as electromagnetic radiation from this disk with retrograde angular momentum is preferentially absorbed by the black hole. Extrapolation of numerical-relativity simulations of equal-mass binary black-hole mergers to maximum initial spins suggests these mergers yield a maximum spin chi_eq < 0.95. Here we show that for smaller mass ratios q = m/M << 1, the superradiant extraction of angular momentum from the larger black hole imposes a fundamental limit chi_lim < 0.9979 +- 0.0001 on the final black-hole spin even in the test-particle limit q -> 0 of binary black-hole mergers. The nearly equal values of chi_gas and chi_lim imply that measurement of supermassive black-hole spins cannot distinguish a black hole built by gas accretion from one assembled by the gravitational inspiral of a disk of compact stellar remnants. We also show how superradiant scattering alters the mass and spin predicted by models derived from extrapolating test-particle mergers to finite mass ratios.
