How to Trust Learned Loop Amplitudes

Higher-order theory predictions are crucial for the precision LHC program, but the time-consuming amplitude evaluation challenges the corresponding Monte-Carlo simulations. Machine-learned amplitude surrogates can resolve this problem, if we can guarantee their precision over the entire phase space. First, we show that our surrogates provide a calibrated learned uncertainty, even for non-Gaussian systematics; second, we describe how less accurate phase space regions can be identified; third, we demonstrate how the precision in these regions can be improved reliably.

$gg \to ZH$ : updated predictions at NLO QCD

We present state-of-the-art predictions for the inclusive cross section of gluon-initiated $ZH$ production, following the recommendations of the LHC Higgs Working Group. In particular, we include NLO QCD corrections, where the virtual corrections are obtained from the combination of a forward expansion and a high-energy expansion, and the real corrections are exact. The expanded results for the virtual corrections are compared in detail to full numerical results. The updated predictions show a reduction of the scale uncertainties to the level of 15%, and they include an estimate of the top-mass-scheme uncertainty.

Perturbative QCD

We give an introduction to perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics, focusing on a pedagogical description of concepts and methods to calculate cross sections measured at high energy colliders. After introducing basic concepts that allow for a perturbative expansion, such as factorisation and asymptotic freedom, we introduce loop integrals and the treatment of ultraviolet and infrared divergences in QCD. The definition of jets and event shape observables is also discussed. Finally, we give a brief overview of the current state of the art.

The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

Beyond dimension six in SM Effective Field Theory: a case study in Higgs pair production at NLO QCD

We present the NLO (two-loop) QCD corrections to Higgs boson pair production in gluon fusion within Standard Model Effective Theory (SMEFT), including also squared dimension-6 operators and double insertions of operators. The different options to truncate the EFT expansion are contrasted to a non-linear EFT approach (HEFT) and their effects are illustrated by several phenomenological examples.

ZH production in gluon fusion at NLO in QCD

We present fully differential next-to-leading order results for Higgs production in association with a $Z$ boson in gluon fusion. Our two-loop virtual contributions are evaluated numerically using sector decomposition, including full top-quark mass effects, and supplemented at high $p_T$ by an analytic high-energy expansion to order ($m_Z^4, m_H^4, m_t^{32}$). Using the expanded results we also present a study of the top-quark mass scheme uncertainty at large $p_T$.

Exploring anomalous couplings in Higgs boson pair production through shape analysis

We classify shapes of Higgs boson pair invariant mass distributions $m_{hh}$, calculated at NLO with full top quark mass dependence, and visualise how distinct classes of shapes relate to the underlying coupling parameter space. Our study is based on a five-dimensional parameter space relevant for Higgs boson pair production in a non-linear Effective Field Theory framework. We use two approaches: an analysis based on predefined shape types and a classification into shape clusters based on unsupervised learning. We find that our method based on unsupervised learning is able to capture shape features very well and therefore allows a more detailed study of the impact of anomalous couplings on the $m_{hh}$ shape compared to more conventional approaches to a shape analysis.

Double Higgs boson production at NLO: combining the exact numerical result and high-energy expansion

We consider the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to Higgs boson pair production, using our recent calculation of the form factors in the high-energy limit. We compute the virtual corrections to the partonic cross section, applying Padé approximations to extend the range of validity of the high-energy expansion. This enables us to compare to the exact numerical calculation in a significant part of the phase space and allows us to extend the virtual matrix element grid, based on the exact numerical calculation, to larger values of the (partonic) transverse momentum of the Higgs boson, which is important for boosted Higgs studies. Improved predictions for hadron colliders with centre-of-mass energies of $14\ \mathrm{TeV}$ and $100\ \mathrm{TeV}$ are presented. The updated grid is made publicly available.

Anomalous coupling, top-mass and parton-shower effects in ${W^+W^-}$ production

We calculate the process $pp\to W^+W^-\to e^+ ν_e μ^-\barν_μ$ at NLO QCD, including also effective field theory (EFT) operators mediating the $ggW^+W^-$ interaction, which first occur at dimension eight. We further combine the NLO and EFT matrix elements produced by GoSam with the HERWIG7/MATCHBOX framework, which offers the possibility to study the impact of a parton shower. We assess the effects of the anomalous couplings by comparing them to top-mass effects as well as uncertainties related to variations of the renormalisation, factorisation and hard shower scales.

NLO QCD corrections to W+ W- b anti-b production with leptonic decays in the light of top quark mass and asymmetry measurements

We present the NLO QCD corrections to the processes p p and p anti-p to W+ W- b anti-b including leptonic decays of the W bosons. Non-resonant contributions as well as diagrams with doubly resonant and singly resonant top quark propagators are fully taken into account. We employ the narrow width approximation to perform the decays of the W bosons; spin correlations are however preserved. We also calculate observables relevant for top quark mass measurements, and study the impact of kinematical requirements and different scale choices on t anti-t asymmetries.

Numerical multi-loop calculations with the program SecDec

SecDec is a program which can be used for the evaluation of parametric integrals, in particular multi-loop integrals. For a given set of propagators defining the graph, the program constructs the graph polynomials, factorizes the endpoint singularities, and finally produces a Laurent series in the dimensional regularization parameter, whose coefficients are evaluated numerically. In this talk we discuss various features of the program, which extend the range of applicability. We also present a recent phenomenological example of an application entering the momentum dependent two-loop corrections to neutral Higgs boson masses in the MSSM.

Diphoton + jets at NLO

We present the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of a photon pair in association with one or two jets. This class of processes constitutes an important background for Higgs physics at the LHC. For the one jet process we include photon fragmentation contributions and perform a comparison between different photon isolation criteria and various isolation parameters. The two jet calculation has been performed using a smooth cone isolation criterion. We find that the NLO QCD corrections are substantial and can lead to distortions of differential distributions.

Massive non-planar two-loop four-point integrals with SecDec 2.1

We present numerical results for massive non-planar two-loop box integrals entering heavy quark pair production at NNLO, some of which are not known analytically yet. The results have been obtained with the program SecDec 2.1, based on sector decomposition and contour deformation, in combination with new types of transformations. Among the new features of version 2.1 is also the possibility to evaluate contracted tensor integrals, with no limitation on the rank.

NLO QCD corrections to diphoton plus jet production through graviton exchange

We present the NLO QCD corrections to the production of a photon pair in association with one jet, where the photons are stemming from graviton decay, within models of large extra dimensions. Our results for the loop amplitudes are produced with the program GOSAM for automated one-loop calculations. We show distributions for several observables for 4, 5 and 6 extra dimensions and demonstrate that the differential K-factors are far from being uniform.

Numerical evaluation of multi-loop integrals for arbitrary kinematics with SecDec 2.0

We present the program SecDec 2.0 which contains various new features: First, it allows the numerical evaluation of multi-loop integrals with no restriction on the kinematics. Dimensionally regulated ultraviolet and infrared singularities are isolated via sector decomposition, while threshold singularities are handled by a deformation of the integration contour in the complex plane. As an application we present numerical results for various massive two-loop four-point diagrams. SecDec 2.0 also contains new useful features for the calculation of more general parameter integrals, related e.g. to phase space integrals.

Precise QCD predictions for the production of a photon pair in association with two jets

We compute the cross section for the production of a high-mass photon pair in association with two hadronic jets to next-to-leading order (NLO) in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Our results allow for the first time to reliably predict the absolute normalisation of this process, and demonstrate that the shape of important kinematical distributions is modified by higher-order effects. The perturbative corrections will be an important ingredient to precision studies of Higgs boson properties from its production in association with two jets.

Automated One-Loop Calculations with GoSam

We present the program package GoSam which is designed for the automated calculation of one-loop amplitudes for multi-particle processes in renormalisable quantum field theories. The amplitudes, which are generated in terms of Feynman diagrams, can be reduced using either D-dimensional integrand-level decomposition or tensor reduction. GoSam can be used to calculate one-loop QCD and/or electroweak corrections to Standard Model processes and offers the flexibility to link model files for theories Beyond the Standard Model. A standard interface to programs calculating real radiation is also implemented. We demonstrate the flexibility of the program by presenting examples of processes with up to six external legs attached to the loop.

Numerical evaluation of massive multi-loop integrals with SecDec

The program package SecDec is presented, allowing the numerical evaluation of multi-loop integrals. The restriction to Euclidean kinematics of version 1.0 has been lifted: thresholds can be handled by an automated deformation of the integration contour into the complex plane. Other new features of the program, which go beyond the standard decomposition of loop integrals, are also described. The program is publicly available at http://secdec.hepforge.org.

Susy-QCD corrections to neutralino pair production in association with a jet

We present the NLO Susy-QCD corrections to the production of a pair of the lightest neutralinos plus one jet at the LHC, appearing as a monojet signature in combination with missing energy. We fully include all non-resonant diagrams, i.e. we do not assume that production and decay factorise. We derive a parameter point based on the p19MSSM which is compatible with current experimental bounds and show distributions based on missing transverse energy and jet observables. Our results are produced with the program GOSAM for automated one-loop calculations in combination with MadDipole/MadGraph for the real radiation part.

Automation of One-Loop Calculations with GoSam: Present Status and Future Outlook

In this presentation, we describe the GoSam (Golem/Samurai) framework for the automated computation of multi-particle scattering amplitudes at the one-loop level. The amplitudes are generated analytically in terms of Feynman diagrams, and can be evaluated using either D-dimensional integrand reduction or tensor decomposition. GoSam can be used to compute one-loop corrections to Standard Model (QCD and EW) processes, and it is ready to link generic model files for theories Beyond SM. We show the main features of GoSam through its application to several examples of different complexity.

SecDec: A general program for sector decomposition

We present a program for the numerical evaluation of multi-dimensional polynomial parameter integrals. Singularities regulated by dimensional regularisation are extracted using iterated sector decomposition. The program evaluates the coefficients of a Laurent series in the regularisation parameter. It can be applied to multi-loop integrals in Euclidean space as well as other parametric integrals, e.g. phase space integrals.

NLO Cross Sections for the LHC using GOLEM: Status and Prospects

In this talk we review the GOLEM approach to one-loop calculations and present an automated implementation of this technique. This method is based on Feynman diagrams and an advanced reduction of one-loop tensor integrals which avoids numerical instabilities. We have extended our one-loop integral library golem95 with an automated one-loop matrix element generator to compute the virtual corrections of the process $q\bar{q}\to b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$. The implementation of the virtual matrix element has been interfaced with tree-level Monte Carlo programs to provide the full result for the above process.

Recent Progress in the Golem Project

We report on the current status of the Golem project which aims at the construction of a general one-loop evaluator for matrix elements. We construct the one-loop matrix elements from Feynman diagrams in a highly automated way and provide a library for the reduction and numerically stable evaluation of the tensor integrals involved in this approach. Furthermore, we present applications to physics processes relevant for the LHC.
