Inverse wave-number-dependent source problems for the Helmholtz equation

This paper is concerned with the multi-frequency factorization method for imaging the support of a wave-number-dependent source function. It is supposed that the source function is given by the inverse Fourier transform of some time-dependent source with a priori given radiating period. Using the multi-frequency far-field data at a fixed observation direction, we provide a computational criterion for characterizing the smallest strip containing the support and perpendicular to the observation direction. The far-field data from sparse observation directions can be used to recover a $Θ$-convex polygon of the support. The inversion algorithm is proven valid even with multi-frequency near-field data in three dimensions. The connections to time-dependent inverse source problems are discussed in the near-field case. Numerical tests in both two and three dimensions are implemented to show effectiveness and feasibility of the approach. This paper provides numerical analysis for a frequency-domain approach to recover the support of an admissible class of time-dependent sources.

Well-posedness and convergence analysis of PML method for time-dependent acoustic scattering problems over a locally rough surface

We aim to analyze and calculate time-dependent acoustic wave scattering by a bounded obstacle and a locally perturbed non-selfintersecting curve. The scattering problem is equivalently reformulated as an initial-boundary value problem of the wave equation in a truncated bounded domain through a well-defined transparent boundary condition. Well-posedness and stability of the reduced problem are established. Numerically, we adopt the perfect matched layer (PML) scheme for simulating the propagation of perturbed waves. By designing a special absorbing medium in a semi-circular PML, we show well-posedness and stability of the truncated initial-boundary value problem. Finally, we prove that the PML solution converges exponentially to the exact solution in the physical domain. Numerical results are reported to verify the exponential convergence with respect to absorbing medium parameters and thickness of the PML.

Uniqueness in inverse diffraction grating problems with infinitely many plane waves at a fixed frequency

This paper is concerned with the inverse diffraction problems by a periodic curve with Dirichlet boundary condition in two dimensions. It is proved that the periodic curve can be uniquely determined by the near-field measurement data corresponding to infinitely many incident plane waves with distinct directions at a fixed frequency. Our proof is based on Schiffer's idea which consists of two ingredients: i) the total fields for incident plane waves with distinct directions are linearly independent, and ii) there exist only finitely many linearly independent Dirichlet eigenfunctions in a bounded domain or in a closed waveguide under additional assumptions on the waveguide boundary. Based on the Rayleigh expansion, we prove that the phased near-field data can be uniquely determined by the phaseless near-field data in a bounded domain, with the exception of a finite set of incident angles. Such a phase retrieval result leads to a new uniqueness result for the inverse grating diffraction problem with phaseless near-field data at a fixed frequency. Since the incident direction determines the quasi-periodicity of the boundary value problem, our inverse issues are different from the existing results of [Htttlich & Kirsch, Inverse Problems 13 (1997): 351-361] where fixed-direction plane waves at multiple frequencies were considered.

Inverse moving source problem for time-fractional evolution equations: Determination of profiles

This article is concerned with two inverse problems on determining moving source profile functions in evolution equations with a derivative order $α\in(0,2]$ in time. In the first problem, the sources are supposed to move along known straight lines, and we suitably choose partial interior observation data in finite time. Reducing the problems to the determination of initial values, we prove the unique determination of one and two moving source profiles for $0<α\le1$ and $1<α\le2$, respectively. In the second problem, the orbits of moving sources are assumed to be known, and we consider the full lateral Cauchy data. At the cost of infinite observation time, we prove the unique determination of one moving source profile by constructing test functions.

On accelerating a multilevel correction adaptive finite element method for Kohn-Sham equation

Based on the numerical method proposed in [G. Hu, X. Xie, F. Xu, J. Comput. Phys., 355 (2018), 436-449.] for Kohn-Sham equation, further improvement on the efficiency is obtained in this paper by i). designing a numerical method with the strategy of separately handling the nonlinear Hartree potential and exchange-correlation potential, and ii).parallelizing the algorithm in an eigenpairwise approach. The feasibility of two approaches are analyzed in detail, and the new algorithm is described completely. Compared with previous results, a significant improvement of numerical efficiency can be observed from plenty of numerical experiments, which make the new method more suitable for the practical problems.

An orthogonalization-free parallelizable framework for all-electron calculations in density functional theory

All-electron calculations play an important role in density functional theory, in which improving computational efficiency is one of the most needed and challenging tasks. In the model formulations, both nonlinear eigenvalue problem and total energy minimization problem pursue orthogonal solutions. Most existing algorithms for solving these two models invoke orthogonalization process either explicitly or implicitly in each iteration. Their efficiency suffers from this process in view of its cubic complexity and low parallel scalability in terms of the number of electrons for large scale systems. To break through this bottleneck, we propose an orthogonalization-free algorithm framework based on the total energy minimization problem. It is shown that the desired orthogonality can be gradually achieved without invoking orthogonalization in each iteration. Moreover, this framework fully consists of Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms (BLAS) operations and thus can be naturally parallelized. The global convergence of the proposed algorithm is established. We also present a precondition technique which can dramatically accelerate the convergence of the algorithm. The numerical experiments on all-electron calculations show the efficiency and high scalability of the proposed algorithm.

Inverse moving source problem for fractional diffusion(-wave) equations: Determination of orbits

This paper is concerned with the inverse problem on determining an orbit of the moving source in a fractional diffusion(-wave) equations in a connected bounded domain of $\mathbb R^d$ or in the whole space $\mathbb R^d$. Based on a newly established fractional Duhamel's principle, we derive a Lipschitz stability estimate in the case of a localized moving source by the observation data at $d$ interior points. The uniqueness for the general non-localized moving source is verified with additional data of more interior observations.

Inverse source problems in an inhomogeneous medium with a single far-field pattern

This paper concerns time-harmonic inverse source problems with a single far-field pattern in two dimensions, where the source term is compactly supported in an a priori given inhomogeneous background medium. For convex-polygonal source terms, we prove that the source support together with the zeroth and first order derivatives of the source function at corner points can be uniquely determined. Further, we prove that an admissible set of source functions (including harmonic functions) having a convex-polygonal support can be uniquely identified by a single far-field pattern. A class of radiating sources is characterized and the extension of the radiated field across a corner point is proven impossible. The corner scattering theory leads to a data-driven inversion scheme for imaging an arbitrarily convex-polygonal source support.

Stability inequality for a semilinear elliptic inverse problem

We establish a logarithmic stability inequality for the inverse problem of determining the non linear term, appearing in a semilinear BVP, from the corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann map (abbreviated to DtN map in the rest of this text). Our result can be seen as a stability inequality for an earlier uniqueness result by Isakov and Sylvester [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 47 (1994), 1403-1410].

Inverse scattering for the one-dimensional Helmholtz equation with piecewise constant wave speed

This paper analyzes inverse scattering for the one-dimensional Helmholtz equation in the case where the wave speed is piecewise constant. Scattering data recorded for an arbitrarily small interval of frequencies is shown to determine the wave speed uniquely, and a direct reconstruction algorithm is presented. The algorithm is exact provided data is recorded for a sufficiently wide range of frequencies and the jump points of the wave speed are equally spaced with respect to travel time. Numerical examples show that the algorithm works also in the general case of arbitrary wave speed (either with jumps or continuously varying etc.) giving progressively more accurate approximations as the range of recorded frequencies increases. A key underlying theoretical insight is to associate scattering data to compositions of automorphisms of the unit disk, which are in turn related to orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. The algorithm exploits the three-term recurrence of orthogonal polynomials to reduce the required computation.

Uniqueness to some inverse source problems for the wave equation in unbounded domains

This paper is concerned with inverse acoustic source problems in an unbounded domain with dynamical boundary surface data of Dirichlet kind. The measurement data are taken at a surface far away from the source support. We prove uniqueness in recovering source terms of the form $f(x)g(t)$ and $f(x_1,x_2,t) h(x_3)$, where $g(t)$ and $h(x_3)$ are given and $x=(x_1, x_2, x_3)$ is the spatial variable in three dimensions. Without these a priori information, we prove that the boundary data of a family of solutions can be used to recover general source terms depending on both time and spatial variables. For moving point sources radiating periodic signals, the data recorded at four receivers are proven sufficient to uniquely recover the orbit function. Simultaneous determination of embedded obstacles and source terms was verified in an inhomogeneous background medium using the observation data of infinite time period. Our approach depends heavily on the Laplace transform.

Direct and Inverse Elastic Scattering From Anisotropic Media

Assume a time-harmonic elastic wave is incident onto a penetrable anisotropic body embedded into a homogeneous isotropic background medium. We propose an equivalent variational formulation in a truncated bounded domain and show the uniqueness and existence of weak solutions by applying the Fredholm alternative and using properties of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map in both two and three dimensions. The Fréchet derivative of the near-field solution operator with respect to the boundary of the scatterer is derived. As an application, we design a descent algorithm for recovering the interface from the near-field data of one or several incident directions and frequencies. Numerical examples in 2D are presented to show the validity and accuracy of our methods.

Shape identification in inverse medium scattering problems with a single far-field pattern

Consider time-harmonic acoustic scattering from a bounded penetrable obstacle $D\subset \mathbb R^N$ embedded in a homogeneous background medium. The index of refraction characterizing the material inside $D$ is supposed to be Hölder continuous near the corners. If $D\subset \mathbb R^2$ is a convex polygon, we prove that its shape and location can be uniquely determined by the far-field pattern incited by a single incident wave at a fixed frequency. In dimensions $N \geq 3$, the uniqueness applies to penetrable scatterers of rectangular type with additional assumptions on the smoothness of the contrast. Our arguments are motivated by recent studies on the absence of non-scattering wavenumbers in domains with corners. As a byproduct, we show that the smoothness conditions in previous corner scattering results are only required near the corners.

Nearly cloaking the elastic wave fields

In this work, we develop a general mathematical framework on regularized approximate cloaking of elastic waves governed by the Lamé system via the approach of transformation elastodynamics. Our study is rather comprehensive. We first provide a rigorous justification of the transformation elastodynamics. Based on the blow-up-a-point construction, elastic material tensors for a perfect cloak are derived and shown to possess singularities. In order to avoid the singular structure, we propose to regularize the blow-up-a-point construction to be the blow-up-a-small-region construction. However, it is shown that without incorporating a suitable lossy layer, the regularized construction would fail due to resonant inclusions. In order to defeat the failure of the lossless construction, a properly designed lossy layer is introduced into the regularized cloaking construction . We derive sharp asymptotic estimates in assessing the cloaking performance. The proposed cloaking scheme is capable of nearly cloaking an arbitrary content with a high accuracy.

Inverse Elastic Scattering for Multiscale Rigid Bodies with A Single Far-field Pattern

We develop three inverse elastic scattering schemes for locating multiple small, extended and multiscale rigid bodies, respectively. There are some salient and promising features of the proposed methods. The cores of those schemes are certain indicator functions, which are obtained by using only a single far-field pattern of the pressure (longitudinal) wave, or the shear (transversal) wave, or the total wave field. Though the inverse scattering problem is known to be nonlinear and ill-posed, the proposed reconstruction methods are totally "direct" and there are no inversions involved. Hence, the methods are very efficient and robust against noisy data. Both rigorous mathematical justifications and numerical simulations are presented in our study.

Uniqueness in Determining Refractive Indices by Formally-determined Far-field Data

We present two uniqueness results for the inverse problem of determining an index of refraction by the corresponding acoustic far-field measurement encoded into the scattering amplitude. The first one is a local uniqueness in determining a variable index of refraction by the fixed incident-direction scattering amplitude. The inverse problem is formally posed with such measurement data. The second one is a global uniqueness in determining a constant refractive index by a single far-field measurement. The arguments are based on the study of certain nonlinear and non-selfadjoint interior transmission eigenvalue problems.

An inverse electromagnetic scattering problem for a bi-periodic inhomogeneous layer on a perfectly conducting plate

This paper is concerned with uniqueness for reconstructing a periodic inhomogeneous medium covered on a perfectly conducting plate. We deal with the problem in the frame of time-harmonic Maxwell systems without TE or TM polarization. An orthogonal relation for two refractive indices is obtained, and then inspired by Kirsch's idea, the refractive index can be identified by utilizing the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a quasi-periodic Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem.

The linear sampling method for the inverse electromagnetic scattering by a partially coated bi-periodic structure

In this paper, we consider the inverse problem of recovering a doubly periodic Lipschitz structure through the measurement of the scattered field above the structure produced by point sources lying above the structure. The medium above the structure is assumed to be homogenous and lossless with a positive dielectric coefficient. Below the structure is a perfect conductor partially coated with a dielectric. A periodic version of the linear sampling method is developed to reconstruct the doubly periodic structure using the near field data. In this case, the far field equation defined on the unit ball of R^3 is replaced by the near field equation which is a linear integral equation of the first kind defined on a plane above the periodic surface.
