On the impact of non-local gravity on compact stars

We study the impact of non-local modifications of General Relativity on stellar structure. In particular, assuming an analytic distortion function and specific equations of state, we made use of remnant stars to put qualitative constraints on a parameter not directly restricted by solar system tests. Using current data sets available for white dwarfs and strange quark stars candidates we find that the most stringent bounds come from the objects displaying the highest core densities, namely strange quark stars. Specifically, the constraints obtained from this class of stars are three to four orders of magnitude tighter than those obtained using white dwarfs.

Binary X-ray sources in massive Brans-Dicke gravity

This study focuses on the X-ray emission of low-mass black hole binaries in massive Brans-Dicke gravity. First, we compute the accretion disk adopting the well-known Shakura-Sunyaev model for an optically thick, cool, and geometrically thin disk. Moreover, we assume that the gravitational field generated by the stellar-mass black hole is an analogue of the Schwarzschild space-time of Einstein's theory in massive Brans-Dicke gravity. We compute the most relevant quantities of interest, i.e., i) the radial velocity, ii) the energy and surface density, and iii) the pressure as a function entirely of the radial coordinate. We also compute the soft spectral component of the X-ray emission produced by the disk. Furthermore, we investigate in detail how the mass of the scalar field modifies the properties of the binary as described by the more standard Schwarzschild solution.

Orbits of light rays in (1+2)-dimensional Einstein-power-Maxwell gravity: Exact analytical solution to the null geodesic equations

We study photon orbits within (1+2)-dimensional Einstein-power-Maxwell non-linear electrodynamics assuming a static and circularly symmetric background. An exact analytical solution to the null geodesic equations for light rays is obtained in terms of the Weierstraß function. We investigate in detail the impact of the photon energy, the electric charge of the black hole, and the integration constant (initial condition) on the shape of the orbits.

Electrically charged compact stars with an interacting quark equation of state

We investigate the properties of non-rotating, electrically charged strange quark stars in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory. For quark matter we adopt the well-motivated quantum chromodynamics (QCD) equation-of-state, while for the charge density we assume it is proportional to the mass density. The system of coupled structure equations are integrated numerically, and we compute the mass, the radius as well as the total electric charge of the stars. Moreover, we perform a detailed numerical study of the effect of electric charge using the interacting quark equation-of-state. We find that stars as heavy as two solar masses can be supported, and that the highest radius and highest mass of the stars increase with the charge density.

Four dimensional Einstein-power-Maxwell black hole solutions in scale-dependent gravity

In the present work, we extend and generalize our previous work regarding the scale dependence applied to black holes in the presence of non-linear electrodynamics [1]. The starting point for this study is the Einstein-power-Maxwell theory with a vanishing cosmological constant in (3+1) dimensions, assuming a scale dependence of both the gravitational and the electromagnetic coupling. We further examine the corresponding thermodynamic properties and how these quantities experience deviations from their classical counterparts. We solve the effective Einstein's field equations using the "null energy condition" to obtain analytical solutions. The implications of quantum corrections are also briefly discussed. Finally, we analyze our solutions and compare them to related results in the literature.

Interior solutions of relativistic stars with anisotropic matter in scale-dependent gravity

We obtain well behaved interior solutions describing hydrostatic equilibrium of anisotropic relativistic stars in scale-dependent gravity, where Newton's constant is allowed to vary with the radial coordinate throughout the star. Assuming i) a linear equation-of-state in the MIT bag model for quark matter, and ii) a certain profile for the energy density, we integrate numerically the generalized structure equations, and we compute the basic properties of the strange quark stars, such as mass, radius and compactness. Finally, we demonstrate that stability criteria as well as the energy conditions are fulfilled. Our results show that a decreasing Newton's constant throughout the objects leads to slightly more massive and more compact stars.

Tidal deformability and radial oscillations of anisotropic polytropic spheres

We compute the equilibrium, the fundamental eigenfrequency of oscillations modes, and quadrupolar tidal deformability of anisotropic polytropic spheres. These studies are respectively performed through the numerical solution of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation, Chandrasekhar radial oscillation equations, and nonlinear first-order Riccati equation for tidal deformability, all modified from their original version to include the anisotropic effects. For the polytropic exponent $γ=2$ and the anisotropic model of Cattoen, Faber, and Visser, we show that the anisotropy could be reflected in the radial pressure, energy density, speed of sound, radial stability, and tidal deformability.

Building (1+1) holographic superconductors in the presence of non-linear Electrodynamics

In the framework of the gauge/gravity duality, and in particular of the $AdS_3/CFT_2$ correspondence, we study one-dimensional superconductors analyzing the dual (1+2)-dimensional gravity in the presence of the Einstein-power-Maxwell non-linear Electrodynamics. In the probe limit we compute the critical temperature of the transition as a function of the mass of the scalar field. The computation is performed analytically employing the Rayleigh-Ritz variational principle. The comparison with a power Maxwell field in higher dimensions as well as with the (1+3)-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory for two-dimensional superconductors is made as well.

Constraints on light dark matter particles using white dwarf stars

We report constraints on the nucleon-dark matter particle cross section using the internal luminosity of observed white dwarf stars in the globular cluster Messier 4. Our results cover the parameter space corresponding to relatively light dark matter particles, in the mass range $0.1~GeV-5~GeV$, which is known to be very difficult to be probed by direct dark matter searches. The additional luminosity coming from self-annihilations of dark matter particles captured inside the stars must not exceed the observed luminosity. Imposing that condition, we obtain for the spin independent cross section of light dark matter particles on baryons $σ_{Nχ}$ the upper bound: $σ_{Nχ} < 4 \times 10^{-41}{\rm cm^2}$.

Dynamical systems methods and statefinder diagnostic of interacting vacuum energy models

We study three interacting dark energy models within the framework of four-dimensional General Relativity and a spatially flat Universe. In particular, we first consider two vacuum models where dark energy interacts with dark matter, while relativistic matter as well as baryons are treated as non-interacting fluid components. Secondly, we investigate a third model where the gravitational coupling is assumed to be a slowly-varying function of the Hubble rate and dark energy and dark matter interact as well. We compute the statefinders parameters versus red-shift as well as the critical points and their nature applying dynamical systems methods. In the case of only an interaction term, our main findings indicate that i) significant differences between the models are observed as we increase the strength of the interaction term, and ii) all the models present an unique attractor corresponding to acceleration. On the other hand, when we allow for a variable gravitational coupling, we find that i) the deviation from the concordance model depends of both the strength of gravitational coupling parameter and the interaction term, and ii) there is an unique attractor corresponding to acceleration.

Dynamics of cosmological inflation and predictions for reheating in the light of 2018 PLANCK results

We study the dynamics of two concrete inflationary models, namely Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking Inflation as well as Loop Inflation. We constrain the parameters for which a viable inflationary Universe emerges using the latest PLANCK results of last year, and we give predictions for the duration of reheating as well as for the reheating temperature after inflation. Our numerical results show that baryogenesis via leptogenesis may be realized within the inflationary models considered in this work.

Interior solutions of relativistic stars in the scale-dependent scenario

We study relativistic stars in the scale-dependent scenario, which is one of the approaches to quantum gravity, and where Newton's constant is promoted to a scale-dependent quantity. First, the generalized structure equations are derived here for the first time. Then they are integrated numerically assuming a linear equation-of-state in the simplest MIT bag model for quark matter. We compute the radius, the mass and the compactness of strange quarks stars, and we show that the energy conditions are fulfilled.

Quark stars with isotropic matter in Hořava gravity and Einstein-æther theory

We study non-rotating and isotropic strange quark stars in Lorentz-violating theories of gravity, and in particular in Hořava gravity and Einstein-æther theory. For quark matter we adopt both linear and non-linear equations of state, corresponding to the MIT bag model and colour flavour locked state, respectively. The new structure equations describing hydrostatic equilibrium generalize the usual Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations of Einstein's general relativity. A dimensionless parameter $ν$ measures the deviation from the standard TOV equations, which are recovered in the limit $ν\rightarrow 0$. We compute the mass, the radius as well as the compactness of the stars, and we show graphically the impact of the parameter $ν$ on the mass-to-radius profiles for different equations of state describing quark matter. The energy conditions and stability criteria are also considered, and they are all found to be fulfilled.

Quasinormal modes of an improved Schwarzschild black hole

We compute the quasinormal frequencies for scalar and electromagnetic perturbations of an improved Schwarzschild geometry in the framework of asymptotically safe gravity, which is one of the approaches to quantum gravity. Adopting the widely used WKB semi-classical approximation, we investigate the impact on the spectrum of the angular degree, the overtone number as well as the black hole mass. We summarize our numerical results in tables, and for better visualization, we show them graphically as well. All modes are found to be stable. Finally, we compare our numerical results with those corresponding to the classical Schwarzschild solution as well as to the results obtained using a different approach. Our findings show that i) a different cut-off identification does not affect the spectra significantly, and ii) for hypothetical objects with masses comparable to the Planck mass, the difference in the numerical values between the modes of the classical solution and the modes of the improved solution studied here is of the order of a few per cent. On the contrary, for realistic, astrophysical BHs no difference in the frequencies is observed.

Quasinormal modes of black holes with a scalar hair in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory

We compute the quasinormal frequencies for scalar perturbations of hairy black holes in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory assuming a non-trivial scalar potential for the dilaton field. We investigate the impact on the spectrum of the angular degree, the overtone number, the charges of the black hole as well as the magnitude of the scalar potential. All modes are found to be stable. Our numerical results are summarized in tables, and for better visualization, we show them graphically as well.

Quasinormal modes of charged black holes in higher-dimensional Einstein-power-Maxwell theory

We compute the quasinormal frequencies for scalar perturbations of charged black holes in five-dimensional Einstein-power-Maxwell theory. The impact on the spectrum of the electric charge of the black holes, of the angular degree, of the overtone number, and of the mass of the test scalar field is investigated in detail. The quasinormal spectra in the eikonal limit are computed as well for several different space-time dimensionalities.

Tidal Love numbers of Proca stars

Proca stars (arXiv:1508.05395) are everywhere regular, asymptotically flat self-gravitating solitons composed of complex, massive vector bosons, forming a macroscopic, star-sized, Bose-Einstein condensate. They have been suggested as a classical, dynamical model of exotic compact objects, black hole mimickers and dark matter candidates. In spherical symmetry, they are qualitatively similar to their scalar cousins, the standard (scalar) boson stars in all respects studied so far. Here we study the tidal deformability and the quadrupolar tidal Love numbers, both electric-type and magnetic-type, of spherically symmetric Proca stars. The equations for the perturbations are derived and the numerical values of the Love numbers for some concrete background solutions are computed. We observe that both Love numbers are qualitatively similar to the ones of the scalar boson stars; in particular, the electric-type (magnetic-type) quadrupolar Love numbers are positive (negative) for Proca stars. Quantitatively, for the same compactness, the electric and magnetic Love numbers in the Proca case are closer (in magnitude) than in the scalar case, with the electric Love numbers having a slightly larger magnitude than the magnetic ones.

Consistency relations for sharp features in the primordial spectra

We study the generation of sharp features in the primordial spectra within the framework of effective field theory of inflation, wherein curvature perturbations are the consequence of the dynamics of a single scalar degree of freedom. We identify two sources in the generation of features: rapid variations of the sound speed c_s (at which curvature fluctuations propagate) and rapid variations of the expansion rate H during inflation. With this in mind, we propose a non-trivial relation linking these two quantities that allows us to study the generation of sharp features in realistic scenarios where features are the result of the simultaneous occurrence of these two sources. This relation depends on a single parameter with a value determined by the particular model (and its numerical input) responsible for the rapidly varying background. As a consequence, we find a one-parameter consistency relation between the shape and size of features in the bispectrum and features in the power spectrum. To substantiate this result, we discuss several examples of models for which this one-parameter relation (between c_s and H) holds, including models in which features in the spectra are both sudden and resonant.

Consistency relations for sharp inflationary non-Gaussian features

If cosmic inflation suffered tiny time-dependent deviations from the slow-roll regime, these would induce the existence of small scale-dependent features imprinted in the primordial spectra, with their shapes and sizes revealing information about the physics that produced them. Small sharp features could be suppressed at the level of the two-point correlation function, making them undetectable in the power spectrum, but could be amplified at the level of the three-point correlation function, offering us a window of opportunity to uncover them in the non-Gaussian bispectrum. In this article, we show that sharp features may be analyzed using only data coming from the three point correlation function parametrizing primordial non-Gaussianity. More precisely, we show that if features appear in a particular non-Gaussian triangle configuration (e.g. equilateral, folded, squeezed), these must reappear in every other configuration according to a specific relation allowing us to correlate features across the non-Gaussian bispectrum. As a result, we offer a method to study scale-dependent features generated during inflation that depends only on data coming from measurements of non-Gaussianity, allowing us to omit data from the power spectrum.

Non-perturbative effects in WIMP scattering off nuclei in the NMSSM

We explore a scenario in the Next-to-Minimal-Supersymmetric-Standard-Model (NMSSM) with both a light O(10) GeV neutralino and a CP-odd Higgs boson with significant coupling to down-type fermions, evading all current B physics, LEP and WMAP bounds. Motivated by a possible slight lepton universality breaking hinted in Upsilon decays, we consider the effect of the mixing of eta(b) resonances with the pseudoscalar Higgs on the spin-dependent scattering neutralino cross section off nucleons. We conclude that this mechanism could be relevant provided that non-perturbative effects enhance the effective eta(b)-nucleon coupling, taking over velocity/q^2 suppression factors, perhaps giving a new insight into the current controversial situation concerning direct search experiments of dark matter.

A dynamical dark energy model with a given luminosity distance

It is assumed that the current cosmic acceleration is driven by a scalar field, the Lagrangian of which is a function of the kinetic term only, and that the luminosity distance is a given function of the red-shift. Upon comparison with Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAOs) and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data the parameters of the models are determined, and then the time evolution of the scalar field is determined by the dynamics using the cosmological equations. We find that the solution is very different than the corresponding solution when the non-relativistic matter is ignored, and that the universe enters the acceleration era at larger red-shift compared to the standard $ΛCDM$ model.

Critical behavior of a supersymmetric extension of the Ginzburg-Landau model

We make a connection between quantum phase transitions in condensed matter systems, and supersymmetric gauge theories that are of interest in the particle physics literature. In particular, we point out interesting effects of the supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics upon the critical behavior of the Ginzburg-Landau model. It is shown that supersymmetry fixes the critical exponents, as well as the Landau-Ginzburg parameter, and that the model resides in the type II regime of superconductivity.

Direct neutralino searches in the NMSSM with gravitino LSP in the degenerate scenario

In the present work a two-component dark matter model is studied adopting the degenerate scenario in the R-parity conserving NMSSM. The gravitino LSP and the neutralino NLSP are extremely degenerate in mass, avoiding the BBN bounds and obtaining a high reheating temperature for thermal leptogenesis. In this model both gravitino (absolutely stable) and neutralino (quasi-stable) contribute to dark matter, and direct detection searches for neutralino are discussed. Points that survive all the constraints correspond to a singlino-like neutralino.

The physics of a new gauge boson in a Stueckelberg extension of the two-Higgs-doublet model

String theory constructions using D-brane physics offer a framework where ingredients like extra abelian factors in the gauge group, more than one Higgs doublet and a generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism appear at the same time. Motivated by works towards the direction of obtaining the Standard Model in orientifold constructions, we study in the present work a Stueckelberg extension of the two-Higgs-doublet model. The distinctive features of our model are i) a sharp decay width for the heavy gauge boson, and ii) a charged Higgs boson having two main decay channels at tree level with equal branching ratios.

Bound states between dark matter particles and emission of gravitational radiation

Bound states of two weakly interactive massive particles are studied. It is assumed that the WIMPonium is formed due to the gravitational interaction, since the weak interaction can sometimes be repulsive. The lifetimes of the spontaneous emission of gravitational radiation and of the WIMPs annihilation into a pair of gravitons are computed, and are shown to be many orders of magnitude larger than the age of the universe.

Gravitino dark matter in the constrained next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model with neutralino next-to-lightest superpartner

The viability of a possible cosmological scenario is investigated. The theoretical framework is the constrained next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (cNMSSM), with a gravitino playing the role of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) and a neutralino acting as the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP). All the necessary constraints from colliders and cosmology have been taken into account. For gravitino we have considered the two usual production mechanisms, namely out-of equillibrium decay from the NLSP, and scattering processes from the thermal bath. The maximum allowed reheating temperature after inflation, as well as the maximum allowed gravitino mass are determined.

The gravitino dark matter with neutralino NLSP hypothesis is investigated in the framework of NMSSM. We have considered both the thermal and non-thermal gravitino production mechanisms, and we have taken into account all the collider and cosmological constraints. The maximum allowed reheating temperature after inflation, as well as the maximum allowed gravitino mass are determined.

Higher-order coupled quintessence

We study a coupled quintessence model in which the interaction with the dark matter sector is a function of the quintessence potential. Such a coupling can arise from a field dependent mass term for the dark matter field. The dynamical analysis of a standard quintessence potential coupled with the interaction explored here shows that the system possesses a late time accelerated attractor. In light of these results, we perform a fit to the most recent Supernovae Ia, Cosmic Microwave Background and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation data sets. Constraints arising from weak equivalence principle violation arguments are also discussed.

Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis and WIMP dark matter in modified gravity

In the present work the primordial Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) and weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter are discussed in a certain class of modified gravitational theories, namely $f(R) \sim R^n$ gravity. The new gravitational model is characterized by a single parameter $n$. First we determine the conditions under which the theoretical predictions for the $^{4}$He abundance are in agreement with the observations. More precisely, during BBN the physics is known and all the parameters are known. The only free parameter to be constrained is the power $n$ related to the new gravitational model. After that, for cold dark matter we use the value of $n$ determined from the BBN considerations and determine how the mass of the dark matter particle is related to the annihilation cross section in order for the cold dark matter constraint to be satisfied.

Dark matter in supersymmetric models with axino LSP in Randall-Sundrum II brane model

The axino dark matter hypothesis in RSII brane model is studied. Within the framework of CMSSM we assume that the lightest neutralino or stau is the NLSP, and that the axino production has a single contribution from the NLSP decay. It is found that the axino can play the role of dark matter in the universe and we determine what the axino mass should be for different values of the five-dimensional Planck mass. An upper bound is obtained for the latter

Supersymmetric dark matter, catalyzed BBN, and heavy moduli in mSUGRA with gravitino LSP and stau NLSP

In mSUGRA model we assume that gravitino, the LSP, plays the role of cold dark matter in the universe, while the lightest stau, the NLSP, catalyzes primordial BBN reconciling the discrepancy between theory and observations. We have taken into account all gravitino production mechanisms, namely decay from heavy scalar fields, decay from the NLSP, and from the thermal bath. We find that the dark matter constraint is incompatible with the lower bound on the reheating temperature

Cosmic strings and Natural Inflation

In the present work we discuss cosmic strings in natural inflation. Our analysis is based entirely on the CMB quadrupole temperature anisotropy and on the existing upper bound on the cosmic string tension. Our results show that the allowed range for both parameters of the inflationary model is very different from the range obtained recently if cosmic strings are formed at the same time with inflation, while if strings are formed after inflation we find that the parameters of the inflationary model are similar to the ones obtained recently.
