Reachability in Two-Dimensional Vector Addition Systems with States: One Test is for Free

Vector addition system with states is an ubiquitous model of computation with extensive applications in computer science. The reachability problem for vector addition systems is central since many other problems reduce to that question. The problem is decidable and it was recently proved that the dimension of the vector addition system is an important parameter of the complexity. In fixed dimensions larger than two, the complexity is not known (with huge complexity gaps). In dimension two, the reachability problem was shown to be PSPACE-complete by Blondin et al. in 2015. We consider an extension of this model, called 2-TVASS, where the first counter can be tested for zero. This model naturally extends the classical model of one counter automata (OCA). We show that reachability is still solvable in polynomial space for 2-TVASS. As in the work Blondin et al., our approach relies on the existence of small reachability certificates obtained by concatenating polynomially many cycles.

Occam's Razor Applied to the Petri Net Coverability Problem

The verification of safety properties for concurrent systems often reduces to the coverability problem for Petri nets. This problem was shown to be ExpSpace-complete forty years ago. Driven by the concurrency revolution, it has regained a lot of interest over the last decade. In this paper, we propose a generic and simple approach to solve this problem. Our method is inspired from the recent approach of Blondin, Finkel, Haase and Haddad. Basically, we combine forward invariant generation techniques for Petri nets with backward reachability for well- structured transition systems. An experimental evaluation demonstrates the efficiency of our approach.

On Boundedness Problems for Pushdown Vector Addition Systems

We study pushdown vector addition systems, which are synchronized products of pushdown automata with vector addition systems. The question of the boundedness of the reachability set for this model can be refined into two decision problems that ask if infinitely many counter values or stack configurations are reachable, respectively. Counter boundedness seems to be the more intricate problem. We show decidability in exponential time for one-dimensional systems. The proof is via a small witness property derived from an analysis of derivation trees of grammar-controlled vector addition systems.

On the Coverability Problem for Pushdown Vector Addition Systems in One Dimension

Does the trace language of a given vector addition system (VAS) intersect with a given context-free language? This question lies at the heart of several verification questions involving recursive programs with integer parameters. In particular, it is equivalent to the coverability problem for VAS that operate on a pushdown stack. We show decidability in dimension one, based on an analysis of a new model called grammar-controlled vector addition systems.

Reachability Analysis of Communicating Pushdown Systems

The reachability analysis of recursive programs that communicate asynchronously over reliable FIFO channels calls for restrictions to ensure decidability. Our first result characterizes communication topologies with a decidable reachability problem restricted to eager runs (i.e., runs where messages are either received immediately after being sent, or never received). The problem is EXPTIME-complete in the decidable case. The second result is a doubly exponential time algorithm for bounded context analysis in this setting, together with a matching lower bound. Both results extend and improve previous work from La Torre et al.

Reachability of Communicating Timed Processes

We study the reachability problem for communicating timed processes, both in discrete and dense time. Our model comprises automata with local timing constraints communicating over unbounded FIFO channels. Each automaton can only access its set of local clocks; all clocks evolve at the same rate. Our main contribution is a complete characterization of decidable and undecidable communication topologies, for both discrete and dense time. We also obtain complexity results, by showing that communicating timed processes are at least as hard as Petri nets; in the discrete time, we also show equivalence with Petri nets. Our results follow from mutual topology-preserving reductions between timed automata and (untimed) counter automata.
