Respectful decompositions of Lie algebras

One of Pierre Molino's principal mathematical achievements was his theory of Riemannian foliations. One of his last papers, published in 2001, showed that his theory could be extended to a large class of non-integrable distributions. The key example here is that of a \emph{respectful decomposition} of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$; this is vector space decomposition $\mathfrak{g}=H+V$ such that $[V,H]\subseteq H$. This paper will examine the basic properties of respectful decompositions.

Equitable Candy Sharing

Children, sitting in a circle, each have a nonnegative number of candies in front of them. A whistle is blown and each child with more than one candy passes one candy to the left and one to the right. The sharing process is repeated until a fixed state is attained, or the system enters a periodic cycle. This paper treats the case where the total number of candies equals the number of children. For a given initial distribution of candies, a necessary and sufficient condition is given for the system to ultimately attain the equitable distribution in which each child has one candy.

Piecewise linear periodic maps of the plane with integer coefficients

We study periodic, piecewise linear maps on the plane starting with the Mort Brown's map. We show that if the number of pieces is two, there is only a short list of possible periods (this fact can be seen as the crystallographic restriction for this class of maps). Otherwise, without the restriction on the number of pieces, a map can have any period. We show how to construct such maps using binary trees and so called admissible sequences.

Morley's other miracle: $\displaystyle 4^{p-1}\equiv\pm (\smallmatrix p-1 \frac{p-1}{2} \endsmallmatrix) \pmod {p^3} $

Frank Morley is famous for his theorem concerning the angle trisectors of a triangle. This note gives an elementary proof of another result of Morley's, which relates the middle binomial coefficient to a certain power of two. The striking thing about Morley's congruence is that it is valid modulo the third power of the prime being considered.

Some Remarks on Graphical Sequences for Graphs and Bipartite Graphs

For finite sequence $\underbar{\em d}$ of positive integers, we consider graphs that have $\underbar{\em d}$ as their list of vertex degrees, and bipartite graphs for which each part has $\underbar{\em d}$ as its list of vertex degrees. In particular, we make a connection between a result for bipartite graphs by Alon, Ben-Shimon and Krivelevich and a result of Zverovich and Zverovich for graphs, and we give an improvement of a result of Zverovich and Zverovich. We show that the bipartite graphs with vertex degree sequences $(\underbar{\em d},\underbar{\em d}\,)$ are in one to one correspondence with graphs with loops with reduced degree sequence $\underbar{\em d}$, where the reduced degree of a vertex is defined to be the number of edges incident to the vertex, with loops counted only once. We also give two Erdős--Gallai type theorems for graphs with loops.

Totally Geodesic Subalgebras of Nilpotent Lie algebras

A metric Lie algebra g is a Lie algebra equipped with an inner product. A subalgebra h of a metric Lie algebra g is said to be totally geodesic if the Lie subgroup corresponding to h is a totally geodesic submanifold relative to the left-invariant Riemannian metric defined by the inner product, on the simply connected Lie group associated to g. A nonzero element of g is called a geodesic if it spans a one-dimensional totally geodesic subalgebra. We give a new proof of Kaizer's theorem that every metric Lie algebra possesses a geodesic. For nilpotent Lie algebras, we give several results on the possible dimensions of totally geodesic subalgebras. We give an example of a codimension two totally geodesic subalgebra of the standard filiform nilpotent Lie algebra, equipped with a certain inner product. We prove that no other filiform Lie algebra possesses such a subalgebra. We show that in filiform nilpotent Lie algebras, totally geodesic subalgebras that leave invariant their orthogonal complements have dimension at most half the dimension of the algebra. We give an example of a 6-dimensional filiform nilpotent Lie algebra that has no totally geodesic subalgebra of dimension >2, for any choice of inner product.

A restriction of Euclid

Euclid is a well known two-player impartial combinatorial game. A position in Euclid is a pair of positive integers and the players move alternately by subtracting a positive integer multiple of one of the integers from the other integer without making the result negative. The player who makes the last move wins. There is a variation of Euclid due to Grossman in which the game stops when the two entrees are equal. We examine a further variation that we called M-Euclid in which the game stops when one of the entrees is a positive integer multiple of the other. We solve the Sprague-Grundy function for M-Euclid and compare the Sprague-Grundy functions of the three games.
