Precursors to plastic failure in a numerical simulation of CuZr metallic glass

We deform, in pure shear, a thin sample of Cu$_{50}$Zr$_{50}$ metallic glass using a molecular dynamics simulation up to, and including, failure. The experiment is repeated ten times in order to have average values and standard deviations. Although failure occurs at the same value of the externally imposed strain for the ten samples, there is significant sample-to-sample variation in the specific microscopic material behavior. Failure can occur along one, two, or three planes, located at the boundaries of previously formed shear bands. These shear bands form shortly before failure. However, well before their formation and at external strains where plastic deformation just begins to be significant, non-affine displacement organizes itself along localized bands. The shear bands subsequently form at the edges of these non-affine-displacement-bands, and present an alternating rotation-quadrupole structure, as found previously by Şopu et al. (2017) in the case of a notched sample loaded in tension. The thickness of shear bands is roughly determined by the available plastic energy. The onset of shear banding is accompanied by a sharp increase in the rate of change of the rotation angle localization, the strain localization, and the non-affine square displacement.

On the Asymmetry of Vibrational Energy Flow

A simple model to predict the directionality of vibrational energy flow at molecular level is presented. This model is based on a vibrational energy propagation analysis using ab intio molecular dynamics and the Fukui function and local softness reactivity indexes derived from DFT. By using this simple conceptual model we are giving a cogent rationale to previous theoretical and experimental reports of asymmetrical vibrational energy diffusion in proteins and energetic materials. We proposed here three basic rules for the Vibrational Energy Relaxation in molecules: (i) the vibrational energy flows form a soft site to a hard site but not in the opposite direction, (ii) when vibrational energy is injected directly to a hard site, it is trapped in this site, and (iii) if the vibrational energy is pump in a polarizable site and two sites with different softness are available, the energy will propagate to the softest one.

Hydrogen bonds and asymmetrical heat diffusion in a-Helices. A Computational Analysis

In this work, we report the heat rectifying capability of a-helices. Using molecular dynamics simulations we show an increased thermal diffusivity in the C-Terminal to N-Terminal direction of propagation. The origin of this effect seems to be a function of the particular orientation of the hydrogen bonds stabilizing these a-helices. Our results may be relevant for the design of thermal rectification devices for materials science and lend support to the role of normal length hydrogen bonds in the asymmetrical energy flow in proteins.
