Bloch oscillations of helicoidal spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in deep optical lattices

We consider helicoidal spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in deep optical lattice and study the dynamics of Bloch oscillation. We show that the variation of helicoidal gauge potential with spin-orbit coupling is different in zero-momentum and plane-wave phases. The characteristics of Bloch oscillation are different in the two phases. In the zero-momentum phase, the Bloch oscillation is harmonic while it is anharmonic in the plane-wave phase. The amplitude of Bloch oscillation is found to be affected by the helicoidal gauge potential and spin-orbit coupling. We examine that the decay of Bloch oscillation caused by mean-field interaction can be managed by helicoidal spin-orbit coupling.

Insights from intracules and Coulomb holes

We point out that a typical two-electron distribution function in atoms and molecules often called the intracule depends sensitively on the electron-electron repulsion which leads to the so-called Coulomb correlation. The difference between the intracule densities computed by using the correlated and uncorrelated wave functions has been given the name Coulomb hole. Studies in intracule densities and Coulomb holes form a subject of considerable current interest. We make use of a three-parameter correlated wave function and its uncorrelated limit to study the properties of intracules and Coulomb holes in $He$, $Li^+$, $Be^{2+}$ and $Ne^{8+}$ and thus provide a transparent physical picture for the interplay between the electron-nucleus attraction and electron-electron repulsion in forming Coulomb holes around electrons in atoms of different $Z$ values.

Inverse variational problem for nonlinear dynamical systems

In this paper we have chosen to work with two different approaches to solving the inverse problem of the calculus of variation. The first approach is based on an integral representation of the Lagrangian function that uses the first integral of the equation of motion while the second one relies on a generalization of the well known Noether's theorem and constructs the Lagrangian directly from the equation of motion. As an application of the integral representation of the Lagrangian function we first provide some useful remarks for the Lagrangian of the modified Emden-type equation and then obtain results for Lagrangian functions of (i) cubic-quintic Duffing oscillator, (ii) Liénard-type oscillator and (iii) Mathews-Lakshmanan oscillator. As with the modified Emden-type equation these oscillators were found to be characterized by nonstandard Lagrangians except that one could also assign a standard Lagrangian to the Duffing oscillator. We used the second approach to find indirect analytic (Lagrangian) representation for three velocity-dependent equations for (iv) Abraham-Lorentz oscillator, (v) Lorentz oscillator and (vi) Van der Pol oscillator. For each of the dynamical systems from (i)-(vi) we calculated the result for Jacobi integral and thereby provided a method to obtain the Hamiltonian function without taking recourse to the use of the so-called Legendre transformation.

Split and overlapped binary solitons in optical lattices

We analyze the energetic and dynamical properties of bright-bright (BB) soliton pairs in a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates subjected to the action of a combined optical lattice, acting as an external potential for the first species, while modulating the intraspecies coupling constant of the second. In particular, we use a variational approach and direct numerical integrations to investigate the existence and stability of BB solitons in which the two species are either spatially separated (split soliton) or located at the same optical lattice site (overlapped soliton). The dependence of these solitons on the interspecies interaction parameter is explicitly investigated. For repulsive interspecies interaction we show the existence of a series of critical values at which transitions from an initially overlapped soliton to split solitons occur. For attractive interspecies interaction only single direct transitions from split to overlapped BB solitons are found. The possibility to use split solitons for indirect measurements of scattering lengths is also suggested.

Typical observables in a two-mode Bose system

A class of k-particle observables in a two-mode system of Bose particles is characterized by typicality: if the state of the system is sampled out of a suitable ensemble, an experimental measurement of that observable yields (almost) always the same result. We investigate the general features of typical observables, the criteria to determine typicality and finally focus on the case of density correlation functions, which are related to spatial distribution of particles and interference.

Phase randomization and typicality in the interference of two condensates

Interference is observed when two independent Bose-Einstein condensates expand and overlap. This phenomenon is typical, in the sense that the overwhelming majority of wave functions of the condensates, uniformly sampled out of a suitable portion of the total Hilbert space, display interference with maximal visibility. We focus here on the phases of the condensates and their (pseudo) randomization, which naturally emerges when two-body scattering processes are considered. Relationship to typicality is discussed and analyzed.

Displaced dynamics of binary mixtures in linear and nonlinear optical lattices

The dynamical behavior of matter wave solitons of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in combined linear and nonlinear optical lattices (OLs) is investigated. In particular, the dependence of the frequency of the oscillating dynamics resulting from initially slightly displaced components is investigated both analytically, by means of a variational effective potential approach for the reduced collective coordinate dynamics of the soliton, and numerically, by direct integrations of the mean field equations of the BEC mixture. We show that for small initial displacements binary solitons can be viewed as point masses connected by elastic springs of strengths related to the amplitude of the OL and to the intra and inter-species interactions. Analytical expressions of symmetric and anti-symmetric mode frequencies, are derived and occurrence of beatings phenomena in the displaced dynamics is predicted. These expressions are shown to give a very good estimation of the oscillation frequencies for different values of the intra-species interatomic scattering length, as confirmed by direct numerical integrations of the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPE) of the mixture. The possibility to use displaced dynamics for indirect measurements of BEC mixture characteristics such as number of atoms and interatomic interactions is also suggested.

Effects of spatially inhomogeneous atomic interactions on Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

An interplay of optical lattices and nonlinear impurities in controlling the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensate bright solitons is investigated using effective potential approach. The ability of pushing the solitons into or away from the impurity region by changing both lattice and impurity parameters is suggested. A possibility for the existence of stable fundamental gap solitons, which appear to satisfy an inverted Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion, is examined.
