Geometric action for extended Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group in four dimensions

The constrained Hamiltonian analysis of geometric actions is worked out before applying the construction to the extended Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group in four dimensions. For any Hamiltonian associated with an extended BMS$_4$ generator, this action provides a field theory in two plus one spacetime dimensions whose Poisson bracket algebra of Noether charges realizes the extended BMS$_4$ Lie algebra. The Poisson structure of the model includes the classical version of the operator product expansions that have appeared in the context of celestial holography. Furthermore, the model reproduces the evolution equations of non-radiative asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity.

Notes on massless scalar field partition functions, modular invariance and Eisenstein series

The partition function of a massless scalar field on a Euclidean spacetime manifold $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}\times\mathbb{T}^2$ and with momentum operator in the compact spatial dimension coupled through a purely imaginary chemical potential is computed. It is modular covariant and admits a simple expression in terms of a real analytic SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ Eisenstein series with $s=(d+1)/2$. Different techniques for computing the partition function illustrate complementary aspects of the Eisenstein series: the functional approach gives its series representation, the operator approach yields its Fourier series, while the proper time/heat kernel/world-line approach shows that it is the Mellin transform of a Riemann theta function. High/low temperature duality is generalized to the case of a non-vanishing chemical potential. By clarifying the dependence of the partition function on the geometry of the torus, we discuss how modular covariance is a consequence of full SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ invariance. When the spacetime manifold is $\mathbb{R}^p\times\mathbb{T}^{q+1}$, the partition function is given in terms of a SL$(q+1,\mathbb{Z})$ Eisenstein series again with $s=(d+1)/2$. In this case, we obtain the high/low temperature duality through a suitably adapted dual parametrization of the lattice defining the torus. On $\mathbb{T}^{d+1}$, the computation is more subtle. An additional divergence leads to an harmonic anomaly.

BMS current algebra in the context of the Newman-Penrose formalism

Starting from an action principle adapted to the Newman-Penrose formalism, we provide a self-contained derivation of BMS current algebra, which includes the generalization of the Bondi mass loss formula to all BMS generators. In the spirit of the Newman-Penrose approach, infinitesimal diffeomorphisms are expressed in terms of four scalars rather than a vector field. In this framework, the on-shell closed co-dimension two forms of the linearized theory associated with Killing vectors of the background are constructed from a standard algorithm. The explicit expression for the breaking that occurs when using residual gauge transformations instead of exact Killing vectors is worked out and related to the presymplectic flux.

Conserved currents in the Palatini formulation of general relativity

We derive the expressions for the local, on-shell closed co-dimension 2 forms in the Palatini formulation of general relativity and explicitly show their on-shell equivalence to those of the metric formulation. When compared to other first order formulations, two subtleties have to be addressed during the construction: off-shell non-metricity and the fact that the transformation of the connection under infinitesimal diffeomorphisms involves second order derivatives of the associated vector fields.

Soft degrees of freedom, Gibbons-Hawking contribution and entropy from Casimir effect

Recent work on non proper-gauge degrees of freedom in the context of the Casimir effect is reviewed. In his original paper, Casimir starts by pointing out that, when the electromagnetic field is confined between two perfectly conducting parallel plates, there is an additional physical polarization of the electromagnetic field at zero value for the discretized longitudinal momentum besides the standard two transverse polarizations at non-zero values. In this review, the dynamics of these additional modes is obtained from first principles. At finite temperature, their contribution to the entropy is proportional to the area of the plates and corresponds to the contribution of a massless scalar field in 2+1 dimensions. When the plates are charged, there is a further contribution to the partition function from the zero mode of this additional scalar that scales with the area but does not contribute to the entropy. It reproduces the result obtained when the Gibbons-Hawking method is applied to the vacuum capacitor. For completeness, a brief discussion of the classical thermodynamics of such a capacitor is included.

Asymptotically locally flat spacetimes and dynamical black flowers in three dimensions

The theory of massive gravity proposed by Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend is considered in the special case of the pure irreducibly fourth order quadratic Lagrangian. It is shown that the asymptotically locally flat black holes of this theory can be consistently deformed to "black flowers" that are no longer spherically symmetric. Moreover, we construct radiating spacetimes settling down to these black flowers in the far future. The generic case can be shown to fit within a relaxed set of asymptotic conditions as compared to the ones of general relativity at null infinity, while the asymptotic symmetries remain the same. Conserved charges as surface integrals at null infinity are constructed following a covariant approach, and their algebra represents BMS$_{3}$, but without central extensions. For solutions possessing an event horizon, we derive the first law of thermodynamics from these surface integrals.

Chern-Simons action for inhomogeneous Virasoro group as an extension of three dimensional flat gravity

We initiate the study of a Chern-Simons action associated to the semi-direct sum of the Virasoro algebra with its coadjoint representation. This model extends the standard Chern-Simons formulation of three dimensional flat gravity and is similar to the higher-spin extension of three dimensional anti-de Sitter or flat gravity. The extension can also be constructed for the exotic but not for the cosmological constant deformation of flat gravity.

Notes on conformal invariance of gauge fields

In Lagrangian gauge systems, the vector space of global reducibility parameters forms a module under the Lie algebra of symmetries of the action. Since the classification of global reducibility parameters is generically easier than the classification of symmetries of the action, this fact can be used to constrain the latter when knowing the former. We apply this strategy and its generalization for the non-Lagrangian setting to the problem of conformal symmetry of various free higher spin gauge fields. This scheme allows one to show that, in terms of potentials, massless higher spin gauge fields in Minkowski space and partially-massless fields in (A)dS space are not conformal for spin strictly greater than one, while in terms of curvatures, maximal-depth partially-massless fields in four dimensions are also not conformal, unlike the closely related, but less constrained, maximal-depth Fradkin--Tseytlin fields.

Notes on the BMS group in three dimensions: II. Coadjoint representation

The coadjoint representation of the BMS$_3$ group, which governs the covariant phase space of three-dimensional asymptotically flat gravity, is investigated. In particular, we classify coadjoint BMS$_3$ orbits and show that intrinsic angular momentum is free of supertranslation ambiguities. Finally, the link with induced representations upon geometric quantization is discussed.

Super-BMS$_{3}$ invariant boundary theory from three-dimensional flat supergravity

The two-dimensional super-BMS$_{3}$ invariant theory dual to three-dimensional asymptotically flat $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity is constructed. It is described by a constrained or gauged chiral Wess-Zumino-Witten action based on the super-Poincaré algebra in the Hamiltonian, respectively the Lagrangian formulation, whose reduced phase space description corresponds to a supersymmetric extension of flat Liouville theory.

Three-dimensional asymptotically flat Einstein-Maxwell theory

Three-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with non trivial asymptotics at null infinity is solved. The symmetry algebra is a Virasoro-Kac-Moody type algebra that extends the bms3 algebra of the purely gravitational case. Solution space involves logarithms and provides a tractable example of a polyhomogeneous solution space. The associated surface charges are non-integrable and non-conserved due to the presence of electromagnetic news. As in the four dimensional purely gravitational case, their algebra involves a field-dependent central charge.

preprint2014arXiv

Asymptotic symmetries and dynamics of three-dimensional flat supergravity

A consistent set of asymptotic conditions for the simplest supergravity theory without cosmological constant in three dimensions is proposed. The canonical generators associated to the asymptotic symmetries are shown to span a supersymmetric extension of the BMS$_3$ algebra with an appropriate central charge. The energy is manifestly bounded from below with the ground state given by the null orbifold or Minkowski spacetime for periodic, respectively antiperiodic boundary conditions on the gravitino. These results are related to the corresponding ones in AdS$_3$ supergravity by a suitable flat limit. The analysis is generalized to the case of minimal flat supergravity with additional parity odd terms for which the Poisson algebra of canonical generators form a representation of the super-BMS$_3$ algebra with an additional central charge.

Notes on the BMS group in three dimensions: I. Induced representations

The Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group in three dimensions is the symmetry group of asymptotically flat three-dimensional spacetimes. It is the semi-direct product of the diffeomorphism group of the circle with the space of its adjoint representation, embedded as an abelian normal subgroup. The structure of the group suggests to study induced representations; we show here that they are associated with the well-known coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro group and provide explicit representations in terms of one-particle states.

A 2D field theory equivalent to 3D gravity with no cosmological constant

In (2+1) space-time dimensions the Einstein theory of gravity has no local degrees of freedom. In fact, in the presence of a negative cosmological term, it is described by a (1+1) dimensional theory living on its boundary: Liouville theory. It is invariant under the action of the two-dimensional conformal group, which, in the gravitational context, corresponds to the asymptotic symmetries of asymptotically AdS geometries. In the flat case, when the cosmological term is turned off, a theory describing gravity at the boundary is absent. In this note we show that, in the Hamiltonian setup, such a theory may be constructed. The theory is BMS3 invariant, as it should, corresponding to the asymptotic symmetry group of an asymptotically flat spacetime.

A note on the Newman-Unti group and the BMS charge algebra in terms of Newman-Penrose coefficients

The symmetry algebra of asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity in four dimensions in the sense of Newman and Unti is revisited. As in the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs gauge, it is shown to be isomorphic to the direct sum of the abelian algebra of infinitesimal conformal rescalings with bms4. The latter algebra is the semi-direct sum of infinitesimal supertranslations with the conformal Killing vectors of the Riemann sphere. Infinitesimal local conformal transformations can then consistently be included. We work out the local conformal properties of the relevant Newman-Penrose coefficients, construct the surface charges and derive their algebra.

preprint2013arXiv

Asymptotic symmetries at null infinity and local conformal properties of spin coefficients

We show that the symmetry algebra of asymptotically flat four dimensional spacetimes at null infinity in the sense of Newman and Unti is isomorphic to the direct sum of the abelian algebra of infinitesimal conformal rescalings with bms4. We then work out the local conformal properties of the relevant Newman-Penrose coefficients, as well as the surface charges and their algebra.

Comments on holographic current algebras and asymptotically flat four dimensional spacetimes at null infinity

We follow the spirit of a recent proposal to show that previous computations for asymptotically flat spacetimes in four dimensions at null infinity can be re-interpreted in terms of a well-defined holographic current algebra for the time component of the currents. The analysis is completed by the current algebra for the spatial components.

Dual dynamics of three dimensional asymptotically flat Einstein gravity at null infinity

Starting from the Chern-Simons formulation, the two-dimensional dual theory for three-dimensional asymptotically flat Einstein gravity at null infinity is constructed. Solving the constraints together with suitable gauge fixing conditions gives in a first stage a chiral Wess-Zumino-Witten like model based on the Poincaré algebra in three dimensions. The next stage involves a Hamiltonian reduction to a BMS3 invariant Liouville theory. These results are connected to those originally derived in the anti-de Sitter case by rephrasing the latter in a suitable gauge before taking their flat-space limit.

Three-dimensional Bondi-Metzner-Sachs invariant two-dimensional field theories as the flat limit of Liouville theory

In the gravitational context, Liouville theory is the two-dimensional conformal field theory that controls the boundary dynamics of asymptotically AdS_3 spacetimes at the classical level. By taking a suitable limit of the coupling constants of the Hamiltonian formulation of Liouville, we construct and analyze a BMS_3 invariant two-dimensional field theory that is likely to control the boundary dynamics at null infinity of three dimensional asymptotically flat gravity.

Entropy of three-dimensional asymptotically flat cosmological solutions

The thermodynamics of three-dimensional asymptotically flat cosmological solutions that play the same role than the BTZ black holes in the anti-de Sitter case is derived and explained from holographic properties of flat space. It is shown to coincide with the flat-space limit of the thermodynamics of the inner black hole horizon on the one hand and the semi-classical approximation to the gravitational partition function associated to the entropy of the outer horizon on the other. This leads to the insight that it is the Massieu function that is universal in the sense that it can be computed at either horizon.

Supertranslations call for superrotations

We review recent results on symmetries of asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity. In higher dimensions, the symmetry algebra realizes the Poincaré algebra. In three and four dimensions, besides the infinitesimal supertranslations that have been known since the sixties, the algebras are evenly balanced because there are also infinitesimal superrotations. We provide the classification of central extensions of the bms3 and bms4 algebras. Applications and consequences as well as directions for future work are briefly indicated.

The flat limit of three dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes

In order to get a better understanding of holographic properties of gravitational theories with a vanishing cosmological constant, we analyze in detail the relation between asymptotically anti-de Sitter and asymptotically flat spacetimes in three dimensions. This relation is somewhat subtle because the limit of vanishing cosmological constant cannot be naively taken in standard Fefferman-Graham coordinates. After reformulating the standard anti-de Sitter results in Robinson-Trautman coordinates, a suitably modified Penrose limit is shown to connect both asymptotic regimes.

preprint2011arXiv

BMS charge algebra

The surface charges associated with the symmetries of asymptotically flat four dimensional spacetimes at null infinity are constructed. They realize the symmetry algebra in general only up to a field-dependent central extension that satisfies a suitably generalized cocycle condition. This extension vanishes when using the globally well defined BMS algebra. For the Kerr black hole and the enlarged BMS algebra with both supertranslations and superrotations, some of the supertranslations charges diverge whereas there are no divergences for the superrotation charges. The central extension is proportional to the rotation parameter and involves divergent integrals on the sphere.

A Poincare lemma for sigma models of AKSZ type

For a sigma model of AKSZ-type, we show that the local BRST cohomology is isomorphic to the cohomology of the target space differential when restricted to coordinate neighborhoods both in the base and in the target. An analogous result is shown to hold for the cohomology in the space of functional multivectors. Applications of these latter cohomology classes in the context of the inverse problem of the calculus of variation for general gauge systems are also discussed.

Aspects of the BMS/CFT correspondence

After a review of symmetries and classical solutions involved in the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence, we apply a similar analysis to asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity in 3 and 4 dimensions. In the spirit of two dimensional conformal field theory, the symmetry algebra of asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity in 4 dimensions is taken to be the semi-direct sum of supertranslations with infinitesimal local conformal transformations and not, as usually done, with the Lorentz algebra. As a first application, we derive how the symmetry algebra is realized on solution space. In particular, we work out the behavior of Bondi's news tensor, mass and angular momentum aspects under local conformal transformations.

preprint2010arXiv

First order parent formulation for generic gauge field theories

We show how a generic gauge field theory described by a BRST differential can systematically be reformulated as a first order parent system whose spacetime part is determined by the de Rham differential. In the spirit of Vasiliev's unfolded approach, this is done by extending the original space of fields so as to include their derivatives as new independent fields together with associated form fields. Through the inclusion of the antifield dependent part of the BRST differential, the parent formulation can be used both for on and off-shell formulations. For diffeomorphism invariant models, the parent formulation can be reformulated as an AKSZ-type sigma model. Several examples, such as the relativistic particle, parametrized theories, Yang-Mills theory, general relativity and the two dimensional sigma model are worked out in details.

preprint2010arXiv

Symmetries of asymptotically flat 4 dimensional spacetimes at null infinity revisited

It is argued that the symmetry algebra of asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity in 4 dimensions should be taken as the semi-direct sum of supertranslations with infinitesimal local conformal transformations and not, as usually done, with the Lorentz algebra. As a consequence, two dimensional conformal field theory techniques will play as fundamental a role in this context of direct physical interest as they do in three dimensional anti-de Sitter gravity.

The Coulomb solution as a coherent state of unphysical photons

In the context of the problem of what micro-states are responsible for the entropy of black holes, we consider as a physical toy model the electromagnetic Coulomb solution. By quantizing the electromagnetic field in the presence of an external source of charge Q, the quantum state corresponding to the Coulomb solution is identified as a coherent state of longitudinal and temporal photons in a Hilbert space with negative norm states.

preprint2009arXiv

Classical central extension for asymptotic symmetries at null infinity in three spacetime dimensions

The symmetry algebra of asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity in three dimensions is the semi-direct sum of the infinitesimal diffeomorphisms on the circle with an abelian ideal of supertranslations. The associated charge algebra is shown to admit a non trivial classical central extension of Virasoro type closely related to that of the anti-de Sitter case.

Manifest spin 2 duality with electric and magnetic sources

We extend the formulation of spin 2 fields on Minkowski space which makes the action manifestly invariant under duality rotations to the case of interactions with external electric and magnetic sources by adding suitable potentials for the longitudinal and trace parts. In this framework, the string singularity of the linearized Taub-NUT solution is resolved into a Coulomb-like solution. Suitable surface charges to measure energy-momentum and angular momentum of both electric and magnetic type are constructed.

Comments on the Gauge Fixed BRST Cohomology and the Quantum Noether Method

We discuss in detail the relation between the gauge fixed and gauge invariant BRST cohomology. We showed previously that in certain gauges some cohomology classes of the gauge-fixed BRST differential do not correspond to gauge invariant observables. We now show that in addition ``accidental'' conserved currents may appear. These correspond one-to-one to observables that become trivial in this gauge. We explicitly show how the gauge-fixed BRST cohomology appears in the context of the Quantum Noether Method.

Local BRST cohomology and Seiberg-Witten maps in noncommutative Yang-Mills theory

We analyze in detail the recursive construction of the Seiberg-Witten map and give an exhaustive description of its ambiguities. The local BRST cohomology for noncommutative Yang-Mills theory is investigated in the framework of the effective commutative Yang-Mills type theory. In particular, we show how some of the conformal symmetries get obstructed by the noncommutative deformation.

preprint2000arXiv

Local BRST cohomology in gauge theories

The general solution of the anomaly consistency condition (Wess-Zumino equation) has been found recently for Yang-Mills gauge theory. The general form of the counterterms arising in the renormalization of gauge invariant operators (Kluberg-Stern and Zuber conjecture) and in gauge theories of the Yang-Mills type with non power counting renormalizable couplings has also been worked out in any number of spacetime dimensions. This Physics Report is devoted to reviewing in a self-contained manner these results and their proofs. This involves computing cohomology groups of the differential introduced by Becchi, Rouet, Stora and Tyutin, with the sources of the BRST variations of the fields ("antifields") included in the problem. Applications of this computation to other physical questions (classical deformations of the action, conservation laws) are also considered. The general algebraic techniques developed in the Report can be applied to other gauge theories, for which relevant references are given.

A general non renormalization theorem in the extended antifield formalism

In the context of algebraic renormalization, the extended antifield formalism is used to derive the general forms of the anomaly consistency condition and of the Callan-Symanzik equation for generic gauge theories. A local version of the latter is used to derive sufficient conditions for the vanishing of beta functions associated to terms whose integrands are invariant only up to a divergence for an arbitrary non trivial non anomalous symmetry of the Lagrangian. These conditions are independent of power counting restrictions and of the form of the gauge fixation.

preprint1995arXiv

Local BRST cohomology in Einstein--Yang--Mills theory

We analyse in detail the local BRST cohomology in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory using the antifield formalism. We do not restrict the Lagrangian to be the sum of the standard Hilbert and Yang-Mills Lagrangians, but allow for more general diffeomorphism and gauge invariant actions. The analysis is carried out in all spacetime dimensions larger than 2 and for all ghost numbers. This covers the classification of all candidate anomalies, of all consistent deformations of the action, as well as the computation of the (equivariant) characteristic cohomology, i.e. the cohomology of the spacetime exterior derivative in the space of (gauge invariant) local differential forms modulo forms that vanish on-shell. We show in particular that for a semi-simple Yang-Mills gauge group the antifield dependence can be entirely removed both from the consistent deformations of the Lagrangian and from the candidate anomalies. Thus, the allowed deformations of the action necessarily preserve the gauge structure, while the only candidate anomalies are those provided by previous works not dealing with antifields, and by ``topological" candidate anomalies which are present only in special spacetime dimensions (6,9,10,13,...). This result no longer holds in presence of abelian factors where new candidate anomalies and deformations of the action can be constructed out of the conserved Noether currents (if any). The Noether currents themselves are shown to be covariantizable, with a few exceptions discussed as well.
