Novel data analysis techniques in coronal seismology

We review novel data analysis techniques developed or adapted for the field of coronal seismology. We focus on methods from the last ten years that were developed for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) imaging observations of the solar corona, as well as for light curves from radio and X-ray. The review covers methods for the analysis of transverse and longitudinal waves; spectral analysis of oscillatory signals in time series; automated detection and processing of large data sets; empirical mode decomposition; motion magnification; and reliable detection, including the most common pitfalls causing artefacts and false detections. We also consider techniques for the detailed investigation of MHD waves and seismological inference of physical parameters of the coronal plasma, including restoration of the three-dimensional geometry of oscillating coronal loops, forward modelling and Bayesian parameter inference.

Simulating White-Light Images of Coronal Structures for Parker Solar Probe/WISPR: Study of the Total Brightness Profiles

The Wide-field Imager for Parker Solar Probe (WISPR) captures unprecedented white-light images of the solar corona and inner heliosphere. Thanks to the uniqueness of Parker Solar Probe's (PSP) orbit, WISPR is able to image ``locally'' coronal structures at high spatial and time resolutions. The observed plane of sky, however, rapidly changes because of the PSP's high orbital speed. Therefore, the interpretation of the dynamics of the coronal structures recorded by WISPR is not straightforward. A first study, undertaken by \citet{Liewer2019}, shows how different coronal features (e.g., streamers, flux ropes) appear in the field of view of WISPR by means of raytracing simulations. In particular, they analyze the effects of the spatial resolution changes on both the images and the associated height-time maps, and introduce the fundamentals for geometric triangulation. In this follow-up paper, we focus on the study of the total brightness of a simple, spherical, plasma density structure, to understand how the analysis of Thomson-scattered emission by the electrons in a coronal feature can shed light into the determination of its kinematic properties. We investigate two cases: {\it (a)} a density sphere at a constant distance from the Sun for different heliographic longitudes; {\it (b)} a density sphere moving outwardly with constant speed. The study allows us to characterize the effects of the varying heliocentric distance of the observer and scattering angle on the total brightness observed, which we exploit to contribute to a better determination of the position and speed of the coronal features observed by WISPR.

New representations of Poincaré group for consistent Relativistic Particle Theories

Though the irreducible representations of the Poincare' group form the groundwork for the formulation of relativistic quantum theories of a particle, robust classes of such representations are missed in current formulations of these theories. In this work the extended class of irreducible representations with positive `mass' parameter is explicitly determined. Several new representations in such extension, so far excluded, give rise to consistent theories for Klein-Gordon particles and also to new species of particle theories.

Group theoretical foundations of the Quantum Theory of an interacting particle

{We point out some obstacles raised by the lost of symmetry against the extension to the case of an interacting particle of the approach that {\sl deductively} establishes the Quantum Theory of a free particle according to the group theoretical methods worked out by Bargmann, Mackey and Wigner. Then we develop an approach which overcomes these difficulties in the non relativistic case. According to our approach the different specific forms of the wave equation of an interacting particle are implied by particular first order invariance properties that characterize the interaction with respect to specific sub-groups of galileian transformations. Moreover, the possibility of yet unknown forms of the wave equation is left open.

"Evaluations" of Observables Versus Measurements in Quantum Theory

In Quantum Physics there are circumstances where the direct measurement of particular observables encounters diffculties; in some of these cases, however, its value can be evaluated, i.e. it can be inferred by measuring another observable characterized by perfect correlation with the observable of interest. Though an evaluation is often interpreted as a measurement of the evaluated observable, we prove that the two concepts cannot be identified in Quantum Physics, because the identifcation yields contradictions. Then, we establish the conceptual status of evaluations in Quantum Theory and the role can be ascribed to them.

Measurements of Observables Replaced by "Detections" in Quantum Theory

In Quantum Physics it is not always possible to directly perform the measurement of an obsevable; in some of these cases, however, its value can be {\sl detected}, i.e. it can be inferred by measuring {\sl another} observable characterized by perfect correlation with the observable of interest. Though a {\sl detection} is often interpreted as a {\sl measurement} of the detected observable, we prove that the two concepts cannot be identified in Quantum Physics. Furthermore, we establish what meaning and role can be ascribed to detections coherently with Quantum Theory.
