C*-Algebras of one-sided subshifts over arbitrary alphabets

We associate a C*-algebra $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}_{\textsf{X}}$ with a subshift over an arbitrary, possibly infinite, alphabet. We show that $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}_{\textsf{X}}$ is a full invariant for topological conjugacy of the subshifts of Ott, Tomforde, and Willis. When the alphabet is countable, we show that $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}_{\textsf{X}}$ is an invariant for isometric conjugacy of subshifts with the product metric. For a suitable partial action associated with a subshift over a countable alphabet, we show that $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}_{\textsf{X}}$ is also an invariant for continuous orbit equivalence. Additionally, we give a concrete way to compute the K-theory of $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}_{\textsf{X}}$ and illustrate it with two examples.

Infinite sum relations on universal C*-algebras

We extend the usual theory of universal C*-algebras from generators and relations in order to allow some relations to be described using the strong operator topology. In particular, we can allow some infinite sum relations. We prove a universal property for the algebras we define and we show how the Cuntz algebra of infinite isometries as well as the Exel-Laca algebras can be described using infinite sum relations. Finally, we give some sufficient conditions for when a C*-algebra generated by projections and partial isometries is a universal C*-algebra using only norm relations, in case one still wants to avoid using relations with respect to the strong operator topology.

A remark on contracting inverse semigroups

A semi-lattice is said to be tree-like when any two of its elements are either orthogonal or comparable. Given an inverse semigroup S whose idempotent semi-lattice is tree-like, and such that all tight filters are ultra-filters, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for S to be contracting which looks closer in spirit to the notion of contracting actions than a recent condition found by the second named author and E. Pardo.

Partial crossed product description of the C*-algebras associated with integral domains

Recently, Cuntz and Li introduced the C^*-algebra A[R] associated to an integral domain R with finite quotients. In this paper, we show that A[R] is a partial group algebra of the group $K \rtimes K^x$ with suitable relations, where K is the field of fractions of R. We identify the spectrum of this relations and we show that it is homeomorphic to the profinite completion of R. By using partial crossed product theory, we reconstruct some results proved by Cuntz and Li. Among them, we prove that $\ar$ is simple by showing that the action is topologically free and minimal.
