The profile of the Higgs boson -- status and prospects

The Higgs boson, which was discovered at CERN in 2012, stands out as a remarkable elementary particle with distinct characteristics. Unlike any other observed particle, it possesses zero spin within the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. Theoretical predictions had anticipated the existence of this scalar boson, postulating its interaction with the $W$ and $Z$ bosons as well as through Yukawa interactions with fermions. Furthermore the Higgs boson can interact with itself, commonly referred to as the Higgs self-interaction. In this review, the current state of experimental and theoretical investigations of Higgs boson production at the LHC and the ongoing efforts to unravel its properties are described, and an up-to-date assessment of our understanding of the Higgs sector of the SM is provided. In addition, potential links between the Higgs boson and significant unresolved questions within the realm of particle physics are presented.

MiNNLO$_{\text{PS}}$: A new method to match NNLO QCD to parton showers

We present a novel method to combine QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) with parton shower (PS) simulations, that can be applied to the production of heavy systems in hadronic collisions, such as colour singlets or a $t\bar{t}$ pair. The NNLO corrections are included by connecting the MiNLO$^\prime$ method with transverse-momentum resummation, and they are calculated at generation time without any additional reweighting, making the algorithm considerably efficient. Moreover, the combination of different jet multiplicities does not require any unphysical merging scale, and the matching preserves the structure of the leading logarithmic corrections of the Monte Carlo simulation for parton showers ordered in transverse momentum. We present proof-of-concept applications to hadronic Higgs production and the Drell-Yan process at the LHC.

Next-to-next-to-leading order event generation for $VH$ production with $H\to b\bar{b}$ decay

We consider the Higgsstrahlung process in hadronic collisions and present the computation of next-to-next-to-leading order predictions matched to parton showers for both production and $H\to b\bar{b}$ decay employing the MiNNLO$_{\rm PS}$ method. We present predictions for $ZH$ and $W^{\pm}H$ production including spin correlations and off-shell effects by calculating the full processes $pp \to \ell^+\ell^-H \to \ell^+\ell^-b\bar{b}$, $pp \to ν_\ell\barν_\ell H \to ν_\ell\barν_\ell b\bar{b}$ and $pp \to \ell^\pm ν_\ell H \to \ell^\pm ν_\ell b\bar{b}$ in the narrow-width approximation for the Higgs boson. For the $W^{\pm}H$ process, NNLO+PS accuracy in production and decay is achieved for the first time. Our calculations are validated against earlier simulations in the NNLOPS approach that includes NNLO corrections via multi-differential reweighting. The new MiNNLO$_{\rm PS}$ generators for these processes, which evaluate NNLO corrections on-the-fly in the event generation, will supersede those earlier calculations. Our predictions are in good agreement with recent measurements of the Higgsstrahlung cross sections.

Next-to-next-to-leading order event generation for top-quark pair production

The production of top-quark pairs in hadronic collisions is among the most important reactions in modern particle physics phenomenology and constitutes an instrumental avenue to study the properties of the heaviest quark observed in nature. The analysis of this process at the Large Hadron Collider relies heavily on Monte Carlo simulations of the final state events, whose accuracy is challenged by the outstanding precision of experimental measurements. In this letter we present the first matched computation of top-quark pair production at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD with all-order radiative corrections as implemented via parton-shower simulations. Besides its intrinsic relevance for LHC phenomenology, this work also establishes an important step towards the simulation of other hadronic processes with colour charges in the final state.

NNLO event generation for $\boldsymbol{pp \to Zh \to \ell^+\ell^- b \bar b}$ production in the SM effective field theory

We consider associated $Zh$ production with $Z \to \ell^+ \ell^-$ and $h \to b \bar b$ decays in hadronic collisions. In the framework of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) we calculate the QCD corrections to this process and achieve next-to-next-to-leading order plus parton shower (NNLO$+$PS) accuracy using the MiNNLO$_{\rm PS}$ method. This precision is obtained for a subset of six SMEFT operators, including the corrections from effective Yukawa- and chromomagnetic dipole-type interactions. Missing higher-order QCD effects associated with the considered dimension-six operators are estimated to have a relative numerical impact of less than a percent on the total rate once existing experimental limits on the relevant Wilson coefficients are taken into account. We provide a dedicated Monte Carlo (MC) code that evaluates the NNLO SMEFT corrections on-the-fly in the event generation. This MC generator is used to study the numerical impact of NNLO$+$PS corrections on the kinematic distributions in $pp \to Zh \to \ell^+ \ell^- b \bar b$ production employing simple SMEFT benchmark scenarios. We identify the invariant mass $m_{b \bar b}$ of the two $b$-tagged jets as well as the three-invariant jet mass $m_{b \bar b j}$ as particularly interesting observables to study SMEFT effects. These distributions receive contributions that change both their normalisation and shape with the latter modifications depending on the exact jet definition. To our knowledge SMEFT effects of this type have so far not been discussed in the literature. The presented MC generator can also serve as a starting point to obtain NNLO$+$PS accuracy for a suitable enlarged set of effective operators in the future.

The Higgs boson Turns Ten

The discovery of the Higgs boson, ten years ago, was a milestone that opened the door to the study of a new sector of fundamental physical interactions. We review the role of the Higgs field in the Standard Model of particle physics and explain its impact on the world around us. We summarize the insights into Higgs physics revealed so far by ten years of work, discuss what remains to be determined, and outline potential connections of the Higgs sector with unsolved mysteries of particle physics.

$W^+W^-$ production at NNLO+PS with MiNNLO$_{\rm PS}$

We consider $W^+W^-$ production in hadronic collisions and present the computation of next-to-next-to-leading order accurate predictions consistently matched to parton showers (NNLO+PS) using the MiNNLO$_{\rm PS}$ method. Spin correlations, interferences and off-shell effects are included by calculating the full process $pp \to e^+ν_e μ^-\barν_μ$. This is the first NNLO+PS calculation for $W^+W^-$ production that does not require an a-posteriori multi-differential reweighting. The evaluation time of the two-loop contribution has been reduced by more than one order of magnitude through a four-dimensional cubic spline interpolation. We find good agreement with the inclusive and fiducial cross sections measured by ATLAS and CMS. Both NNLO corrections and matching to parton showers are important for an accurate simulation of the $W^+W^-$ signal, and their matching provides the best description of fully exclusive $W^+W^-$ events to date.

$ZZ$ production at nNNLO+PS with MiNNLO$_{\text{PS}}$

We consider $ZZ$ production in hadronic collisions and present state-of-the-art predictions in QCD perturbation theory matched to parton showers. Next-to-next-to-leading order corrections to the quark-initiated channel are combined with parton showers using the MiNNLO$_{\text{PS}}$ method, while next-to-leading order corrections to the loop-induced gluon fusion channel are matched using the POWHEG method. Their combination, dubbed nNNLO+PS, constitutes the best theoretical description of $ZZ$ events to date. Spin correlations, interferences and off-shell effects are included by calculating the full process $pp \to \ell^+\ell^-\ell^{(\prime)+}\ell^{(\prime)-}$. We show the crucial impact of higher-order corrections for both quark- and gluon-initiated processes as well as the relevance of the parton shower in certain kinematical regimes. Our predictions are in very good agreement with recent LHC data.

Photon and Leptons induced processes at the LHC

We study a few basic photon- and lepton-initiated processes at the LHC which can be computed using the recently developed photon and lepton parton densities. First, we consider the production of a massive scalar particle initiated by lepton-antilepton annihilation and photon-photon fusion as representative examples of searches of exotic particles. Then we study lepton-lepton scattering, since this Standard-Model process may be observable at the LHC. We examine these processes at leading and next-to-leading order and, using the POWHEG method, we match our calculations to parton shower programs that implement the required lepton or photon initial-states. We assess the typical size of cross-sections and their uncertainties and discuss the preferred choices for the factorization scale. These processes can also be computed starting directly from the lepto-production hadronic tensor, leading to a result where some collinear-enhanced QED corrections are missing, but all strong corrections are included. Thus, we are in the unique position to perform a comparison of results obtained via the factorization approach to a calculation that does not have strong corrections. This is particularly relevant in the case of lepton-scattering, that is more abundant at lower energies where it is affected by larger strong corrections. We thus compute this process also with the hadronic-tensor method, and compare the results with those obtained with POWHEG. Finally, for some lepton-lepton scattering processes, we compare the size of the signal to the main quark-induced background, which is double Drell-Yan production, and outline a preliminary search strategy to enhance the signal to background ratio.

Top-pair production at the LHC with MiNNLO$_{\rm PS}$

We consider the production of a pair of heavy quarks and illustrate the derivation of the MiNNLO method to match next-to-next-to-leading order calculations with parton showers (NNLO+PS) for this class of processes. As a first application, we construct an event generator for the fully differential simulation of hadronic top-quark pair production at NNLO+PS and discuss all details of its implementation in a parton shower Monte Carlo framework. We present new phenomenological results for the Large Hadron Collider obtained by including the tree-level decays of the top quarks, while accounting for spin-correlation effects. A comprehensive comparison to LHC measurements shows an excellent description of experimental data across multiple hadronic and leptonic particle-level observables. The computer code is available for download within the POWHEG-BOX.

Leptons in the Proton

As is the case for all light coloured Standard Model particles, also photons and charged leptons appear as constituents in ultrarelativistic hadron beams, and admit a parton density function (PDF). It has been shown recently that the photon PDF can be given in terms of the structure functions and form factors for electron-proton scattering. The same holds for lepton PDFs. In the present work we set up a calculation of the lepton PDFs at next-to-leading order, using the same data input needed in the photon case. A precise knowledge of the lepton densities allows us to study lepton-initiated processes even at a hadron collider, with all possible combinations of same-charge, opposite-charge, same-flavour, different-flavour leptons and leptons-quarks, most of which cannot be realized in any other foreseeable experiment. The lepton densities in the proton are extremely small, so that their contribution to Standard Model processes is generally shadowed by processes initiated by coloured partons. We will show, however, that there are cases where these processes can be relevant, giving rise to rare Standard Model signatures and to new production channels, that can enlarge the discovery potential of New Physics at the LHC and future high energy colliders with hadrons in the initial state.

NNLOPS description of the H$\to\! b\bar{b}$ decay with MINLO

We present an event generator that describes the Higgs boson decay into $b$-quarks at next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) in QCD and allows for a consistent matching to parton shower. For this purpose, we work within the POWHEG framework and employ the MINLO method to produce an NNLO-accurate H$\to\! b\bar{b}$ event sample which can further be interfaced with a generic Higgs boson production mode. The resulting events, that combine Higgs production and decay, can be matched to parton shower by means of a vetoed shower. As an example, we present a short phenomenological study for associated Higgs production (HZ) and vector boson fusion (VBF) processes. We release the source code that was used to obtain these results as an $\text{h_bbg}$ user process in POWHEG-BOX-V2. We also provide tools that enable interfacing the decay events with events for an arbitrary Higgs production mode and subsequent matching of the combined Les Houches (LH) events with a parton shower.

How bright is the proton? A precise determination of the photon parton distribution function

It has become apparent in recent years that it is important, notably for a range of physics studies at the Large Hadron Collider, to have accurate knowledge on the distribution of photons in the proton. We show how the photon parton distribution function (PDF) can be determined in a model-independent manner, using electron-proton ($ep$) scattering data, in effect viewing the $ep\to e+X$ process as an electron scattering off the photon field of the proton. To this end, we consider an imaginary, beyond Standard Model process with a flavour changing photon-lepton vertex. We write its cross section in two ways, one in terms of proton structure functions, the other in terms of a photon distribution. Requiring their equivalence yields the photon distribution as an integral over proton structure functions. As a result of the good precision of $ep$ data, we constrain the photon PDF at the level of 1-2% over a wide range of momentum fractions.

Merging WW and WW+jet with MINLO

We present a simulation program for the production of a pair of W bosons in association with a jet, that can be used in conjunction with general-purpose shower Monte Carlo generators, according to the POWHEG method. We have further adapted and implemented the MINLO' method on top of the NLO calculation underlying our WW+jet generator. Thus, the resulting simulation achieves NLO accuracy not only for inclusive distributions in WW+jet production but also WW production, i.e. when the associated jet is not resolved, without the introduction of any unphysical merging scale. This work represents the first extension of the MINLO' method, in its original form, to the case of a genuine underlying 2->2 process, with non-trivial virtual corrections.

NNLOPS accurate associated HW production

We present a next-to-next-to-leading order accurate description of associated HW production consistently matched to a parton shower. The method is based on reweighting events obtained with the HW plus one jet NLO accurate calculation implemented in POWHEG, extended with the MiNLO procedure, to reproduce NNLO accurate Born distributions. Since the Born kinematics is more complex than the cases treated before, we use a parametrization of the Collins-Soper angles to reduce the number of variables required for the reweighting. We present phenomenological results at 13 TeV, with cuts suggested by the Higgs Cross Section Working Group.

QCDLoop: a comprehensive framework for one-loop scalar integrals

We present a new release of the QCDLoop library based on a modern object-oriented framework. We discuss the available new features such as the extension to the complex masses, the possibility to perform computations in double and quadruple precision simultaneously, and useful caching mechanisms to improve the computational speed. We benchmark the performance of the new library, and provide practical examples of phenomenological implementations by interfacing this new library to Monte Carlo programs.

Finite quark-mass effects in the NNLOPS POWHEG+MiNLO Higgs generator

We include finite top- and bottom-mass effects in the next-to-next-to-leading order parton shower (NNLOPS) event generator for inclusive Higgs boson production in gluon fusion based upon the POWHEG+MiNLO approach. Since fixed-order results for quark-mass effects only reach NLO accuracy, we add them to the NNLOPS generator at that accuracy. We explore uncertainties related to the unknown all-order logarithmic structure of bottom-mass effects by comparing the assumption of full exponentiation to no exponentiation at all. Phenomenological results showing the effects of finite quark-masses in the NNLOPS simulation are presented. These suggest that the aforementioned uncertainty is well contained within the envelope of plain renormalization and factorization scale uncertainties.

Jet-vetoed Higgs cross section in gluon fusion at N3LO+NNLL with small-R resummation

We present new results for the jet-veto efficiency and zero-jet cross section in Higgs production through gluon fusion. We incorporate the N$^3$LO corrections to the total cross section, the NNLO corrections to the 1-jet rate, NNLL resummation for the jet $p_t$ and LL resummation for the jet radius dependence. Our results include known finite-mass corrections and are obtained using the jet-veto efficiency method, updated relative to earlier work to take into account what has been learnt from the new precision calculations that we include. For 13 TeV collisions and using our default choice for the renormalisation and factorisation scales, $μ_0=m_H/2$, the matched prediction for the jet-veto efficiency increases the pure NNNLO prediction by about 2% and the two have comparable uncertainties. Relative to NNLO+NNLL results, the new prediction is 2% smaller and the uncertainty reduces from more than 10% to less than 5%. Results are also presented for the central scale $μ_0=m_H$.

NNLOPS accurate Drell-Yan production

We present a next-to-next-to-leading order accurate description of Drell-Yan lepton pair production processes through $γ^*/Z$ or $W$ exchange that includes consistently parton shower effects. Results are obtained by upgrading the vector-boson plus one jet NLO calculation in POWHEG with the MiNLO procedure and by applying an appropriate reweighting procedure making use of the DYNNLO program. We compare to existing data and to accurate resummed calculations.

Electroweak $ZZjj$ production in the Standard Model and beyond in the POWHEG-BOX V2

We present an implementation of electroweak $ZZjj$ production in the POWHEG BOX V2 framework, an upgrade of the POWHEG BOX program which includes a number of new features that are particularly helpful for high-multiplicity processes. We consider leptonic and semi-leptonic decay modes of the Z bosons, and take non-resonant contributions and spin correlations of the final-state particles into account. In the case of decays to leptons, we also include interactions beyond the Standard Model that arise from an effective Lagrangian which includes CP conserving and violating operators up to dimension six. We find that while leptonic distributions are very sensitive to anomalous couplings, because of the small cross-section involved, these analyses are feasible only after a high-luminosity upgrade of the LHC. We consider the cases of a 14 TeV, 33 TeV and 100 TeV machine and discuss the limits that can be placed on those couplings for different luminosities.

Electroweak W+W-jj prodution at NLO in QCD matched with parton shower in the POWHEG-BOX

We present an implementation of electroweak W+W-jj production at hadron colliders in the POWHEG framework, a method that allows the interfacing of a next-to-leading order QCD calculation with parton shower Monte Carlo programs. We provide results for both, fully and semi-leptonic decay modes of the weak bosons, taking resonant and non-resonant contributions and spin correlations of the final-state particles into account. To illustrate the versatility of our implementation, we provide phenomenological results for two representative scenarios with a light and with a heavy Higgs boson, respectively, and in a kinematic regime of highly boosted gauge bosons. The impact of the parton shower is found to depend on the setup and the observable under investigation. In particular, distributions related to a central-jet veto are more sensitive to these effects. Therefore the impact of radiation by the parton shower on next-to-leading order predictions should be assessed carefully on a case-by-case basis.

Merging H/W/Z + 0 and 1 jet at NLO with no merging scale: a path to parton shower + NNLO matching

We consider the POWHEG generator for a H/W/Z boson plus one jet, augmented with the recently proposed MiNLO method for the choice of scales and the inclusion of Sudakov form factors. Within this framework, the generator covers all the transverse-momentum region of the H/W/Z boson, i.e. no generation cuts are needed to obtain a finite result. By construction, the generator achieves NLO accuracy for distributions involving a finite (and relatively large) transverse momentum of the boson. We examine the conditions under which also the totally inclusive distributions (e.g. the boson rapidity distribution) achieve NLO accuracy. We find that a minimal modification of the MiNLO prescription is sufficient to achieve such accuracy. We thus construct a NLO generator for H/W/Z boson plus one jet production such that it smoothly merges into a NLO single boson production in the small transverse-momentum region. We notice that, by simply reweighting the boson rapidity distribution to NNLO predictions, we achieve a NNLO accurate generator matched to a shower. The approach applies to all production processes involving a colorless massive system plus one jet. We discuss how it may be extended to general processes.

NNLOPS simulation of Higgs boson production

We detail a simulation of Higgs boson production via gluon fusion, accurate at next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling, including matching to a parton shower, yielding a fully exclusive, hadron-level description of the final-state. The approach relies on the POWHEG method for merging the NLO Higgs plus jet cross-section with the parton shower, and on the MINLO method to simultaneously achieve NLO accuracy for inclusive Higgs boson production. The NNLO accuracy is reached by a reweighting procedure making use of the HNNLO program.

W and Z bosons in association with two jets using the POWHEG method

In this work we present the implementation of generators for W and Z bosons in association with two jets interfaced to parton showers using the POWHEG BOX. We incorporate matrix elements from the parton-level Monte Carlo program MCFM in the POWHEG BOX, allowing for a considerable improvement in speed compared to previous implementations. We address certain problems that arise when processes that are singular at the Born level are implemented in a shower framework using either a generation cut or a Born suppression factor to yield weighted events. In such a case, events with very large weights can be generated after the shower through a number of mechanisms. Events with very small transverse momentum at the Born level can develop large transverse momentum either after the hardest emission, after the shower, or after the inclusion of multi-parton interactions. We present a solution to this problem that can be easily implemented in the POWHEG BOX. We also show that a full solution to this problem can only be achieved if the generator maintains physical validity also when the transverse momentum of the emitted partons becomes unresolved. One such scheme is the recently-proposed MiNLO method for the choice of scale and the exponentiation of Sudakov form factors in NLO computations. We present a validation study of our generators, by comparing their output to available LHC data.

We present an implementation of the vector boson pair production processes ZZ, W+W- and WZ within the POWHEG BOX V2. This implementation, derived from the POWHEG BOX version, has several improvements over the old one, among which the inclusion of all decay modes of the vector bosons, the possibility to generate different decay modes in the same run, speed optimization and phase space improvements in the handling of interference and singly resonant contributions.

Gluon fusion contribution to W+W- + jet production

We describe the computation of the $gg \to W^+W^-g$ process that contributes to the production of two $W$-bosons and a jet at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While formally of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD, this process can be evaluated separately from the bulk of NNLO QCD corrections because it is finite and gauge-invariant. It is also enhanced by the large gluon flux and by selection cuts employed in the Higgs boson searches in the decay channel $ H \to W^+W^-$, as was first pointed out by Binoth {\it et al.} in the context of $gg \to W^+W^-$ production. For cuts employed by the ATLAS collaboration, we find that the gluon fusion contribution to $pp \to W^+W^-j$ enhances the background by about ten percent and can lead to moderate distortions of kinematic distributions which are instrumental for the ongoing Higgs boson searches at the LHC. We also release a public code to compute the NLO QCD corrections to this process, in the form of an add-on to the package {\tt MCFM}.

MINLO: Multi-scale improved NLO

In the present work we consider the assignment of the factorization and renormalization scales in hadron collider processes with associated jet production, at next-to-leading order (NLO) in perturbation theory. We propose a simple, definite prescription to this end, including Sudakov form factors to consistently account for the distinct kinematic scales occuring in such collisions. The scheme yields results that are accurate at NLO and, for a large class of observables, it resums to all orders the large logarithms that arise from kinematic configurations involving disparate scales. In practical terms the method is most simply understood as an NLO extension of the matrix element reweighting procedure employed in tree level matrix element-parton shower merging algorithms. By way of a proof-of-concept, we apply the method to Higgs and Z boson production in association with up to two jets.

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to electroweak Zjj production in the POWHEGBOX

We present an implementation of electroweak Z-boson production in association with two jets at hadron colliders in the POWHEG framework, a method that allows the interfacing of NLO-QCD calculations with parton-shower Monte Carlo programs. We focus on the leptonic decays of the weak gauge boson, and take photonic and non-resonant contributions to the matrix elements fully into account. We provide results for observables of particular importance for the suppression of QCD backgrounds to vector-boson fusion processes by means of central-jet-veto techniques. While parton-shower effects are small for most observables associated with the two hardest jets, they can be more pronounced for distributions that are employed in central-jet-veto studies.

NLL+NNLO predictions for jet-veto efficiencies in Higgs-boson and Drell-Yan production

Using the technology of the CAESAR approach to resummation, we examine the jet-veto efficiency in Higgs-boson and Drell-Yan production at hadron colliders and show that at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy the resummation reduces to just a Sudakov form factor. Matching with NNLO calculations results in stable predictions for the case of Drell-Yan production, but reveals substantial uncertainties in gluon-fusion Higgs production, connected in part with the poor behaviour of the perturbative series for the total cross section. We compare our results to those from POWHEG with and without reweighting by HqT, as used experimentally, and observe acceptable agreement. In an appendix we derive the part of the NNLL resummation corrections associated with the radius dependence of the jet algorithm.

One-loop calculations in quantum field theory: from Feynman diagrams to unitarity cuts

The success of the experimental program at the Tevatron re-inforced the idea that precision physics at hadron colliders is desirable and, indeed, possible. The Tevatron data strongly suggests that one-loop computations in QCD describe hard scattering well. Extrapolating this observation to the LHC, we conclude that knowledge of many short-distance processes at next-to-leading order may be required to describe the physics of hard scattering. While the field of one-loop computations is quite mature, parton multiplicities in hard LHC events are so high that traditional computational techniques become inefficient. Recently new approaches based on unitarity have been developed for calculating one-loop scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory. These methods are especially suitable for the description of multi-particle processes in QCD and are amenable to numerical implementations. We present a systematic pedagogical description of both conceptual and technical aspects of the new methods.

Next-to-leading order QCD predictions for W+W+jj production at the LHC

Because the LHC is a proton-proton collider, sizable production of two positively charged W-bosons in association with two jets is possible. This process leads to a distinct signature of same sign high-pt leptons, missing energy and jets. We compute the NLO QCD corrections to the QCD-mediated part of pp -> W+W+jj. These corrections reduce the dependence of the production cross-section on the renormalization and factorization scale to about +- 10 percent. We find that a large number of W+W+jj events contain a relatively hard third jet. The presence of this jet should help to either pick up the W+W+jj signal or to reject it as an unwanted background.

NLO corrections to electroweak and QCD production of W+W+ plus two jets in the POWHEGBOX

We present the matching of the next-to-leading order QCD calculation for W+W+jj production via vector-boson fusion in hadronic collisions to parton-shower Monte-Carlo programs according to the POWHEG method. Our implementation complements existing code for QCD-induced W+W+jj production in the POWHEGBOX package, thereby providing a platform for the complete Standard Model production of W+W+jj events via QCD and electroweak interactions. The impact of parton-shower effects is discussed for various distributions and found to be small in most cases. However, few observables, that are relevant for analyses using a central jet veto, are modified significantly when they are interfaced to a parton shower program.

NLO QCD corrections for W^+W^- pair production in association with two jets at hadron colliders

We compute the NLO QCD corrections to the pair production of W-bosons in association with two jets at the Tevatron and the LHC. This process is an important background to heavy Higgs-boson production in association with two jets, either in gluon or weak boson fusion. We consider leptonic decays of W-bosons and include all the spin correlations exactly. For natural choices of the renormalization scale, the NLO QCD corrections to pp(ppbar) -> W^+W^-jj are moderate but different for various values of the center-of-mass collision energy at the LHC and the Tevatron, emphasizing the need to compute them explicitly.

Scalar one-loop integrals for QCD

We construct a basis set of infra-red and/or collinearly divergent scalar one-loop integrals and give analytic formulas, for tadpole, bubble, triangle and box integrals, regulating the divergences (ultra-violet, infra-red or collinear) by regularization in $D=4-2ε$ dimensions. For scalar triangle integrals we give results for our basis set containing 6 divergent integrals. For scalar box integrals we give results for our basis set containing 16 divergent integrals. We provide analytic results for the 5 divergent box integrals in the basis set which are missing in the literature. Building on the work of van Oldenborgh, a general, publicly available code has been constructed, which calculates both finite and divergent one-loop integrals. The code returns the coefficients of $1/ε^2,1/ε^1$ and $1/ε^0$ as complex numbers for an arbitrary tadpole, bubble, triangle or box integral.

W^+W^+ plus dijet production in the POWHEGBOX

We present an implementation of the calculation of the production of W^+W^+ plus two jets at hadron colliders, at next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD, in the POWHEG framework, which is a method that allows the interfacing of NLO calculations to shower Monte Carlo programs. This is the first 2 -> 4 process to be described to NLO accuracy within a shower Monte Carlo framework. The implementation was built within the POWHEGBOX package. We discuss a few technical improvements that were needed in the POWHEGBOX to deal with the computer intensive nature of the NLO calculation, and argue that further improvements are possible, so that the method can match the complexity that is reached today in NLO calculations. We have interfaced our POWHEG implementation with PYTHIA and HERWIG, and present some phenomenological results, discussing similarities and differences between the pure NLO and the POWHEG+PYTHIA calculation both for inclusive and more exclusive distributions. We have made the relevant code available at the POWHEGBOX web site.

W+W-, WZ and ZZ production in the POWHEG BOX

We present an implementation of the vector boson pair production processes ZZ, W+W- and W Z within the POWHEG framework, which is a method that allows the interfacing of NLO calculations to shower Monte Carlo programs. The implementation is built within the POWHEG BOX package. The Z/γ^* interference, as well as singly resonant contributions, are properly included. We also considered interference terms arising from identical leptons in the final state. As a result, all contributions leading to the desired four-lepton system have been included in the calculation, with the sole exception of the interference between ZZ and W+W- in the production of a pair of same-flavour, oppositely charged fermions and a pair of neutrinos, which we show to be fully negligible. Anomalous trilinear couplings can be also set in the program, and we give some examples of their effect at the LHC. We have made the relevant code available at the POWHEG BOX web site.

NLO QCD corrections to five-jet production at LEP and the extraction of alpha_s(M_Z)

The highest exclusive jet multiplicity studied at LEP experiments is five. In this paper we compute the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to e+e- annihilation to five jets, essentially closing the (pure) perturbative QCD studies of exclusive jetty final states at LEP. We compare fixed-order perturbative results with ALEPH data. We estimate hadronization corrections to five-jet observables using the event generator SHERPA, which employs the CKKW procedure to combine a reliable perturbative treatment of high-multiplicity jet final states with parton showers. We show that a competitive value of the strong coupling constant alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1156 +0.0041 -0.0034 can be extracted from the distribution of the five-jet resolution parameter and the five-jet rate at LEP1 and LEP2.

Phenomenology of event shapes at hadron colliders

We present results for matched distributions of a range of dijet event shapes at hadron colliders, combining next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy in the resummation exponent, next-to-next-to leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy in its expansion and next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in a pure alpha_s expansion. This is the first time that such a matching has been carried out for hadronic final-state observables at hadron colliders. We compare our results to Monte Carlo predictions, with and without matching to multi-parton tree-level fixed-order calculations. These studies suggest that hadron-collider event shapes have significant scope for constraining both perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of hadron-collider QCD. The differences between various calculational methods also highlight the limits of relying on simultaneous variations of renormalisation and factorisation scale in making reliable estimates of uncertainties in QCD predictions. We also discuss the sensitivity of event shapes to the topology of multi-jet events, which are expected to appear in many New Physics scenarios.

Generalized unitarity at work: first NLO QCD results for hadronic W+3jet production

We compute the leading color, next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the dominant partonic channels for the production of a W boson in association with three jets at the Tevatron and the LHC. This is the first application of generalized unitarity for realistic one-loop calculations. The method performs well in this non-trivial test and offers great promise for the future.

Accurate QCD predictions for heavy-quark jets at the Tevatron and LHC

Heavy-quark jets are important in many of today's collider studies and searches, yet predictions for them are subject to much larger uncertainties than for light jets. This is because of strong enhancements in higher orders from large logarithms, ln(p_t/m_Q). We propose a new definition of heavy-quark jets, which is free of final-state logarithms to all orders and such that all initial-state collinear logarithms can be resummed into the heavy-quark parton distributions. Heavy-jet spectra can then be calculated in the massless approximation, which is simpler than a massive calculation and reduces the theoretical uncertainties by a factor of three. This provides the first ever accurate predictions for inclusive b- and c-jets, and the latter have significant discriminatory power for the intrinsic charm content of the proton. The techniques introduced here could be used to obtain heavy-flavour jet results from existing massless next-to-leading order calculations for a wide range of processes. We also discuss the experimental applicability of our flavoured jet definition.
