Multiplicative Ramanujan coefficients of null-function

The null-function 0(a):=00(a):=0, ∀a∈\forall a\in N, has Ramanujan expansions: 0(a)=∑q=1∞(1/q)cq(a)0(a)=\sum_{q=1}^{\infty}(1/q)c_q(a) (where cq(a):=c_q(a):= Ramanujan sum), given by Ramanujan, and 0(a)=∑q=1∞(1/φ(q))cq(a)0(a)=\sum_{q=1}^{\infty}(1/φ(q))c_q(a), given by Hardy (φ:=φ:= Euler's totient function). Both converge pointwise (not absolutely) in N. A G:G:N →\rightarrow C is called a Ramanujan coefficient, abbrev. R.c., iff (if and only if) ∑q=1∞G(q)cq(a)\sum_{q=1}^{\infty}G(q)c_q(a) converges in all a∈a\in N; given F:F:N →\rightarrow C, we call <F><F>, the set of its R.c.s, the Ramanujan cloud of FF. Our Main Theorem in arxiv:1910.14640, for Ramanujan expansions and finite Euler products, implies a complete Classification for multiplicative Ramanujan coefficients of 00. Ramanujan's GR(q):=1/qG_R(q):=1/q is a normal arithmetic function GG, i.e., multiplicative with G(p)≠1G(p)\neq 1 on all primes pp; while Hardy's GH(q):=1/φ(q)G_H(q):=1/φ(q) is a sporadic GG, namely multiplicative, G(p)=1G(p)=1 for a finite set of pp, but there's no pp with G(pK)=1G(p^K)=1 on all integers K≥0K\ge 0 (Hardy's has GH(p)=1G_H(p)=1 iff p=2p=2). The G:G:N →\rightarrow C multiplicative, such that there's at least a prime pp with G(pK)=1G(p^K)=1, on all K≥0K\ge 0, are defined to be exotic. This definition completes the cases for multiplicative 0−0-Ramanujan coefficients. The exotic ones are a kind of new phenomenon in the 0−0-cloud (i.e., <0><0>): exotic Ramanujan coefficients represent 00 only with a convergence hypothesis. The not exotic, apart from the convergence hypothesis, require in addition ∑q=1∞G(q)μ(q)=0\sum_{q=1}^{\infty}G(q)μ(q)=0 for normal G∈<0>G\in <0>, while sporadic G∈<0>G\in <0> need ∑(q,P(G))=1G(q)μ(q)=0\sum_{(q,P(G))=1}G(q)μ(q)=0, P(G):=P(G):=product of all pp making G(p)=1G(p)=1. We give many examples of R.c.s G∈<0>G\in <0>; we also prove that the only G∈<0>G\in <0> with absolute convergence are the exotic ones; actually, these generalize to the weakly exotic, not necessarily multiplicative.

Sieve functions in arithmetic bands

An arithmetic function ff is called a {\it sieve function of range} QQ, if its Eratosthenes transform g=f∗μg=f\astμ is supported in [1,Q]∩N[1,Q]\cap\N, where g(q)≪εqεg(q)\ll_{\varepsilon} q^{\varepsilon} (∀ε>0\forall\varepsilon>0). Here, we study the distribution of ff over short {\it arithmetic bands} ∪1≤a≤H{n∈(N,2N]:n≡a ( mod  q)}\cup_{1\le a\le H}\{n\in(N,2N]: n\equiv a\, (\bmod\,q)\}, with H=o(N)H=o(N), and give applications to both the correlations and to the so-called weighted Selberg integrals of ff, on which we have concentrated our recent research.

On the Correlations, Selberg Integral and Symmetry of Sieve Functions in Short Intervals, III

An arithmetic function ff is called a sieve function of range QQ, if it is the convolution product of the constantly 11 function and gg such that g(q)≪εqεg(q)\ll_{\varepsilon} q^{\varepsilon}, ∀ε>0\forall\varepsilon>0, for q≤Qq\leq Q, and g(q)=0g(q)=0 for q>Qq>Q. Here we establish a new result on the autocorrelation of ff by using a famous theorem on bilinear forms of Kloosterman fractions by Duke, Friedlander and Iwaniec. In particular, for such correlations we obtain non-trivial asymptotic formulæ that are actually unreachable by the standard approach of the distribution of ff in the arithmetic progressions. Moreover, we apply our asymptotic formulæ to obtain new bounds for the so-called Selberg integral and symmetry integral of ff, which are basic tools for the study of the distribution of ff in short intervals.

On the error term in a Parseval type formula in the theory of Ramanujan expansions II

For two arithmetical functions ff and gg with absolutely convergent Ramanujan expansions, Murty and Saha have recently derived asymptotic formulas with error term for the convolution sum ∑n≤Nf(n)g(n+h)\sum_{n \le N} f(n) g(n+h) under some suitable conditions (see http://arxiv.org/abs/1506.01945). In this follow up article we improve these results with a weakened hypothesis which is in some sense minimal.

Some optimal links between generations of correlation averages

For a real-valued and essentially bounded arithmetic function ff, i.e., f(n)≪ε ⁣nε, ∀ε ⁣> ⁣0f(n)\ll_{\varepsilon}\!n^{\varepsilon},\,\forall\varepsilon\!>\!0, we \enspace give some optimal links between non-trivial bounds for the sums ∑h≤H∑N<n≤2Nf(n)f(n−h)\sum_{h\le H}\sum_{N<n\le 2N}f(n)f(n-h), ∑N<x≤2N∣∑x<n≤x+Hf(n)∣2\sum_{N<x\le 2N} \big| \sum_{x<n\le x+H}f(n)\big|^2 and ∑N<n≤2N∣∑0≤∣n−x∣≤H(1−∣n−x∣H)f(n)∣2\sum_{N<n\le 2N} \big| \sum_{0\le |n-x|\le H}\big(1-{|n-x|\over H}\big)f(n)\big|^2, with H=o(N)H=o(N) as N→∞N\to\infty.

A generalization of Gallagher's lemma for exponential sums

First we generalize a famous lemma of Gallagher on the mean square estimate for exponential sums by plugging a weight in the right hand side of Gallagher's original inequality. Then we apply it in the special case of the Cesaro weight, in order to establish some results mainly concerning the classical Dirichlet polynomials and the Selberg integrals of an arithmetic function ff, that are tools for studying the distribution of ff in short intervals. Furthermore, we describe the smoothing process via self-convolutions of a weight, that is involved into our Gallagher type inequalities, and compare it with the analogous process via the so-called correlations. Finally, we discuss a comparison argument in view of refinements on the Gallagher weighted inequalities according to different instances of the weight.

Generations of correlation averages

The present paper is a dissertation on the possible consequences of a conjectural bound for the so-called \thinspace modified Selberg integral of the divisor function d3d_3, i.e. a discrete version of the classical Selberg integral, where d3(n)=∑abc=n1d_3(n)=\sum_{abc=n}1 is attached to the Cesaro weight 1−∣n−x∣/H1-|n-x|/H in the short interval ∣n−x∣≤H|n-x|\le H. Mainly, an immediate consequence is a non-trivial bound for the Selberg integral of d3d_3, improving recent results of Ivić based on the standard approach through the moments of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line. We proceed instead with elementary arguments, by first applying the "elementary Dispersion Method" in order to establish a link between "weighted Selberg integrals" \thinspace of any arithmetic function ff and averages of correlations of ff in short intervals. Moreover, we provide a conditional generalization of our results to the analogous problem on the divisor function dkd_k for any k≥3k\ge 3. Further, some remarkable consequences on the 2k−2k-th moments of the Riemann zeta function are discussed. Finally, we also discuss the essential properties that a general function ff should satisfy so that the estimation of its Selberg integrals could be approachable by our method.

On the modified Selberg integral of the three-divisor function d3d_3

We prove a non-trivial result for the, say, modified Selberg integral $\modSel_3(N,h)$, of the divisor function d3(n):=∑a∑b∑c,abc=n1d_3(n):= \sum_{a}\sum_{b}\sum_{c, abc=n}1; this integral is a slight modification of the corresponding Selberg integral, that gives the expected value of the function in short intervals. We get, in fact, $\modSel_3(N,h)\ll Nh^2L^2$, where L:=log⁡NL:=\log N; furthermore, as a byproduct, we obtain indications on the way in which it may be proved the weak sixth moment of the Riemann zeta function.(This was OLD abstract)

On the symmetry of primes

We prove a kind of "almost all symmetry" result for the primes, i.e. we give non-trivial bounds for the "symmetry integral", say IΛ(N,h)I_Λ(N,h), of the von Mangoldt function Λ(n)Λ(n) (:=log⁡p:= \log p for prime-powers n=prn=p^r, 0 otherwise). We get IΛ(N,h)≪NhL5+Nh21/20L2I_Λ(N,h)\ll NhL^5+Nh^{21/20}L^2, with L:=log⁡NL:=\log N; as a Corollary, we bound non-trivially the Selberg integral of the primes, i.e. the mean-square of ∑x<n≤x+hΛ(n)−h\sum_{x<n\le x+h}Λ(n)-h, over x∈[N,2N]x\in [N,2N], to get the "Prime Number Theorem in almost all short intervals" of (log-powers!) length h≥L11/2+εh\ge L^{11/2+ε}. We trust here in the improvement of the exponent, say c<11/2c<11/2.

On the symmetry of the Liouville function in almost all short intervals

We prove a kind of "almost all symmetry" result for the Liouville function λ(n):=(−1)Ω(n)λ(n):=(-1)^{Ω(n)}, giving non-trivial bounds for its "symmetry integral", say Iλ(N,h)I_λ(N,h) : we get Iλ(N,h)≪NhL3+Nh21/20I_λ(N,h)\ll NhL^3+Nh^{21/20}, with L:=log⁡NL:=\log N. We also give similar results for other related arithmetic functions, like the Möbius function μ(n)μ(n) (=λ(n)=λ(n) on square-free nn).

On some lower bounds of some symmetry integrals

We study the \lq \lq symmetry integral\rq \rq, \thinspace say IfI_f, of some arithmetic functions f:N→Rf:\N \rightarrow \R; we obtain from lower bounds of IfI_f (for a large class of arithmetic functions ff) lower bounds for the \lq \lq Selberg integral\rq \rq \thinspace of ff, say JfJ_f (both these integrals give informations about ff in almost all the short intervals [x−h,x+h][x-h,x+h], when N≤x≤2NN\le x\le 2N). In particular, when \thinspace f=dkf=d_k, the divisor function (having Dirichlet series \thinspace ζkζ^k, with \thinspace ζζ \thinspace the Riemann zeta function), where k≥3k\ge 3 is integer, we give lower bounds for the Selberg integrals, say \thinspace Jk=JdkJ_k=J_{d_k}, of the \thinspace dkd_k. We apply elementary methods (Cauchy inequality to get Large Sieve type bounds) in order to give IfI_f lower bounds.

preprint2010arXiv

On the Symmetry Integral

We give a level one result for the "symmetry integral", say If(N,h)I_f(N,h), of essentially bounded f:N→Rf:\N \to \R; i.e., we get a kind of "square-root cancellation" \thinspace bound for the mean-square (in N<x≤2NN<x\le 2N) of the "symmetry" \thinspace of, say, the arithmetic function $f:=g\ast \1$, where g:N→Rg:\N \to \R is such that ∀ε>0\forall ε>0 we have g(n)≪εnεg(n)\ll_ε n^ε, and supported in [1,Q][1,Q], with Q≪NQ\ll N (so, the exponent of QQ relative to NN, say the level λ:=(log⁡Q)/(log⁡N)λ:=(\log Q)/(\log N) is λ<1λ< 1), where the symmetry sum weights the f−f-values in (almost all, i.e. all but o(N)o(N) possible exceptions) the short intervals [x−h,x+h][x-h,x+h] (with positive/negative sign at the right/left of xx), with mild restrictions on hh (say, h→∞h\to \infty and h=o(N)h=o(\sqrt N), as N→∞N\to \infty).

On the Selberg integral of the k−k-divisor function and the 2k−2k-th moment of the Riemann zeta function

We deeply appreciate the papers of Ivić on the links between the 2k−2k-th moments of the Riemann zeta function and, say, dkd_k, the k−k-divisor function. More specifically, both the one bounding the 2k−2k-th moment with a simple average of correlations of the dkd_k (Palanga 1996 Conference Proceedings) and the more recent (arXiv:0708.1601v2 to appear on JTNB), which bounds the Selberg integral of dkd_k applying the 2k−2k-th moment of the zeta. Building on the former paper, we apply an elementary approach (based on arithmetic averages) in order to get information on the reverse link to the second work.

preprint2007arXiv

On the Correlations, Selberg Integral and Symmetry of Sieve Functions in Short Intervals

We study the arithmetic (real) function f=g*1, with g "essentially bounded" and supported over the integers of [1,Q]. In particular, we obtain non-trivial bounds, through f "correlations", for the "Selberg integral" and the "symmetry integral" of f in almost all short intervals [x-h,x+h], N<x<2N, beyond the "classical" level, up to level of distribution, say, lambda=log Q/log N < 2/3 (for enough large h). This time we don't apply Large Sieve inequality, as in our paper [C-S]. Precisely, our method is completely elementary.
