More on the sum-product problem for integers with few prime factors

We show that if $A\subset \mathbb{Z}$ is a finite set of integers in which every integer is divisible by $O(1)$ many primes then \[\max(\lvert A+A\rvert,\lvert AA\rvert) \geq \lvert A\rvert^{12/7-o(1)}\] and, for any $m\geq 2$, \[\max(\lvert mA\rvert, \lvert A^{(m)}\rvert) \geq \lvert A\rvert^{\frac{2}{3}m+\frac{1}{3}-o(1)}.\] Finally, we show that if $A\subset \mathbb{Q}$ is a finite set of rationals in which the numerator and denominator of every $x\in A$ is divisible by $O(1)$ many primes then $\lvert A+AA\rvert \geq \lvert A\rvert^{2-o(1)}$.

On the Pinned Distances Problem in Positive Characteristic

We study the Erd\H os-Falconer distance problem for a set $A\subset \mathbb{F}^2$, where $\mathbb{F}$ is a field of positive characteristic $p$. If $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{F}_p$ and the cardinality $|A|$ exceeds $p^{5/4}$, we prove that $A$ determines an asymptotically full proportion of the feasible $p$ distances. For small sets $A$, namely when $|A|\leq p^{4/3}$ over any $\mathbb{F}$, we prove that either $A$ determines $\gg|A|^{2/3}$. For both large and small sets, the results proved are in fact for pinned distances.

An Energy Bound in the Affine Group

We prove a nontrivial energy bound for a finite set of affine transformations over a general field and discuss a number of implications. These include new bounds on growth in the affine group, a quantitative version of a theorem by Elekes about rich lines in grids. We also give a positive answer to a question of Yufei Zhao that for a plane point set P for which no line contains a positive proportion of points from P, there may be at most one line, meeting the set of lines defined by P in at most a constant multiple of |P| points.

New Proofs of Plünnecke-type Estimates for Product Sets in Groups

We present a new method to bound the cardinality of triple product sets in groups and give three applications. A new and unexpectedly short proof of the Plunnecke-Ruzsa sumset inequalities for Abelian groups. A new proof of a theorem of Tao on triple products, which generalises these inequalities when no assumption on commutativity is made. A further generalisation of the Plunnecke-Ruzsa inequalities in general groups.

Plünnecke's Inequality

Plunnecke's inequality is the standard tool to obtain estimates on the cardinality of sumsets and has many applications in additive combinatorics. We present a new proof. The main novelty is that the proof is completed with no reference to Menger's theorem or Cartesian products of graphs. We also investigate the sharpness of the inequality and show that it can be sharp for arbitrarily long, but not for infinite commutative graphs. A key step in our investigation is the construction of arbitrarily long regular commutative graphs. Lastly we prove a necessary condition for the inequality to be attained.

The L^1-norm of exponential sums in Z^d

Let A be a finite set of integers and F_A its exponential sum. McGehee, Pigno & Smith and Konyagin have independently proved that the L^1-norm of F_A is at least c log|A| for some absolute constant c. The lower bound has the correct order of magnitude and was first conjectured by Littlewood. In this paper we present lower bounds on the L^1-norm of exponential sums of sets in the d-dimensional grid Z^d. We show that the L^1-norm of F_A is considerably larger than log|A| when A is a subset of Z^d with multidimensional structure. We furthermore prove similar lower bounds for sets in Z, which in a technical sense are multidimensional and discuss their connection to an inverse result on the theorem of McGehee, Pigno & Smith and Konyagin.
