Quantum correlations and ergotropy

Understanding the role of classical and quantum correlations in work extraction is a problem of fundamental importance in thermodynamics. We approach this problem by considering that, in closed quantum systems, the maximum cyclic work extractable is equal to the ergotropy. Thus, we aim to identify and investigate the contributions to the ergotropy coming from different kinds of initial correlations (total, classical, discord and entanglement correlations). By doing so, we have introduced and studied quantifiers of correlations which are based on ergotropy. In particular, our results suggest that only discord correlations always give a positive contribution to work extraction, while total, classical and entanglement correlations can reduce the work extraction.

Work extraction from coherently activated maps via quantum switch

We characterize the impact that the application of two maps in a quantum-controlled order has on the process of work extraction via unitary cycles and its optimization. The control is based on the quantum switch model that applies maps in an order not necessarily compatible with the underlying causal structure and, in principle, can be implemented experimentally. First, we show that the activation of quantum maps through the quantum switch model always entails a non-negative gain in ergotropy compared to their consecutive application. We also establish a condition that the maps should fulfill in order to achieve a non-zero ergotropic gain. We then perform a thorough analysis of maps applied to a two-level system and provide general conditions for achieving a positive gain on the incoherent part of ergotropy. Our results are illustrated with several examples and applied to qubit and $d$-dimensional quantum systems. In particular, we demonstrate that a non-zero work can be extracted from a system thermalized by two coherently controlled reservoirs.

Class of quasiprobability distributions of work and initial quantum coherence

The work is a concept of fundamental importance in thermodynamics. An open question is how to describe the work fluctuation for quantum coherent processes in the presence of initial quantum coherence in the energy basis. With the aim of giving a unified description, here we introduce and study a class of quasiprobability distributions of work, which give an average work equal to the average energy change of the system and reduce to the two-projective measurement scheme for an initial incoherent state. Moreover, we characterize the work with the help of fluctuation relations. In particular, by considering the joint distribution of work and initial quantum coherence, we find a fluctuation theorem involving quantum coherence, from which follows a second law of thermodynamics in the case of initial thermal populations. Furthermore, we propose a way to measure the characteristic function of work and we discuss the negativity of the quasiprobability. The effects of coherence are also investigated for a simple system of a qubit.

Fluctuation theorems and thermodynamic uncertainty relations

Fluctuation theorems are fundamental results in non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Considering the fluctuation theorem with respect to the entropy production and an observable, we derive a new thermodynamic uncertainty relation which also applies to non-cyclic and time-reversal non-symmetric protocols. Furthermore, we investigate the relation between the thermodynamic uncertainty relation and the correlation between the entropy and the observable.

Initial quantum coherence in the thermodynamic work

We study the role of the initial quantum coherence in coherent processes generated by an external control of some parameters by looking on the thermodynamic work done. We start by taking in exam an active state and we isolate the contribution to the ergotropy coming from the quantum coherence among the energy eigenstates. It is shown to be related to the quantum relative entropy of coherence through an inequality which involves the completely passive state connected to the initial state. Finally, we extend the analysis to a general out-of-equilibrium process and we show how to take in account in the statistics of work the effects of the initial quantum coherence.

Topological superconducting phases and Josephson effect in curved time-reversal-invariant superconductors

We consider a Rashba spin-orbit coupled nanowire with anisotropic spin-singlet superconducting pairing and time-reversal-invariant symmetry. We explore the evolution of the topological superconducting phases of this system due to geometric deformations for the representative case of a wire bent in a semielliptical shape. We find that when the system is in its topological superconducting phase, strong inhomogeneities in the profile curvature can produce a pair of localized eigenmodes, which can be attributed to a nonuniform topological phase. The curved geometric profile also allows to tune the spin correlations of the superconducting state via the induced inhomogeneity of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The geometric control of the superconducting pair correlations allows to manipulate the critical current in Josephson junctions made up of two time reversal invariant topological superconductors separated by a spin-orbit coupled normal metal. In particular, we find that the curvature inhomogeneity can be exploited for amplifying the current intensity, but also to generate a $0-π$ transition, and a second harmonic contribution, which generates, for some specific geometric configurations, a $φ$-junction behavior.

Work statistics, irreversible heat and correlations build-up in joining two spin chains

We investigate the influences of quantum many-body effects, such as criticality and the existence of factorisation fields, in the thermodynamic cost of establishing a bonding link between two independent quantum spin chains. We provide a physical interpretation of the behavior of irreversible work spent in such process by linking the phenomenology of such quantities to the properties of the spectrum of the system
