Anti-brane uplift instability from goldstino condensation

We investigate the possible appearance of composite states of the goldstino in models with four-dimensional non-linear supersymmetry and we provide a description of their dynamics in terms of a Kähler potential and a superpotential. Our analysis shows that the critical point corresponding to the Volkov-Akulov model is unstable. Similarly, we find that the uplifted stable de Sitter critical point of the KKLT model is shifted and acquires a tachyonic instability. Our findings indicate the existence of a potentially dangerous instability shared by all anti-brane uplifts.

Weak gravity versus scale separation

We give evidence that fully supersymmetric Anti-de Sitter vacua of extended supergravity with a residual gauge group containing an abelian factor cannot be scale separated as a consequence of the weak gravity conjecture. We prove this for N=2 and N=8 supergravity and we explain how our argument applies also to vacua with partially broken, but extended residual supersymmetry. We finally discuss possible loopholes and especially how certain N=1 models can evade our reasoning. Our results suggest that N=0,1 supersymmetry at the lagrangian level might be the most promising chances to obtain a truly four-dimensional effective description of quantum gravity.

Covariant formulation of BPS black holes and the scalar weak gravity conjecture

In this note we analyze the BPS black hole equations in extended supergravities and we find two interesting relations involving first and second derivatives of combinations of the central charges. One relation is a new identity that solely relies on the geometric properties of the scalar manifolds of extended supergravity theories. The other relation is a generalization of a scalar weak gravity conjecture relation conjectured by Palti and uses properties of the underlying black hole solution. We also provide for the first time an explicit covariant construction of the BPS squared action for such solutions.

Warm dark energy

Motivated by some of the recent swampland conjectures, we study the implementation for the late time acceleration of the Universe of a mechanism developed by Anber and Sorbo in the context of primordial inflation, in which an axion field can slowly roll in a steep potential due to additional friction provided by its coupling to some U(1) gauge field. We first study the realization of this mechanism in N = 2 supergravity models resulting from string compactifications on Calabi--Yau manifolds. We then study the transition between matter domination and the axion domination, and show that indeed the backreaction of the produced gauge field can sufficiently slow the motion of the axion, so to produce the present accelerated era. We finally study the transition from a pre-inflationary matter or radiation domination to primordial inflation. In the regime that we could explore numerically, the evolution is characterized by stages of faster axion roll (and consequent bursts of gauge field amplification) intermitted by stages of slower roll, with a pattern that "oscillates'' about the steady state Anber and Sorbo solution, but that does not appear to relax to it.

Constrained superfields in Supergravity

We analyze constrained superfields in supergravity. We investigate the consistency and solve all known constraints, presenting a new class that may have interesting applications in the construction of inflationary models. We provide the superspace Lagrangians for minimal supergravity models based on them and write the corresponding theories in component form using a simplifying gauge for the goldstino couplings.

preprint2015arXiv

Minimal scalar-less matter-coupled supergravity

We build the minimal supergravity model where the nilpotent chiral goldstino superfield is coupled to a chiral matter superfield, realising a different non-linear representation through a mixed nilpotency constraint. The model describes the spontaneous breaking of local supersymmetry in the presence of a generically massive Majorana fermion, but in the absence of elementary scalars. The sign and the size of the cosmological constant, the spectrum and the four-fermion interactions are controlled by suitable parameters.

Uplifting non-compact gauged supergravities

We provide the M-theory uplift of de Sitter vacua of SO(5,3) and SO(4,4) gaugings of maximal supergravity in 4 dimensions. We find new non-compact backgrounds that are squashed hyperboloids with non-trivial flux for the 3-form potential. The uplift requires a new non-linear ansatz for the 11-dimensional metric and for the 3-form potential that reduces to the known one leading to the 7-sphere solution in the case of the SO(8) gauging.

A Search for an N=2 Inflaton Potential

We consider N=2 supergravity theories that have the same spectrum as the R+R^2 supergravity, as predicted from the off-shell counting of degrees of freedom. These theories describe standard N=2 supergravity coupled to one or two long massive vector multiplets. The central charge is not gauged in these models and they have a Minkowski vacuum with N=2 unbroken supersymmetry. The gauge symmetry, being non-compact, is always broken. $α$-deformed inflaton potentials are obtained, in the case of a single massive vector multiplet, with $α=1/3$ and $2/3$. The $α=1$ potential (i.e. the Starobinsky potential) is also obtained, but only at the prize of having a single massive vector and a residual unbroken gauge symmetry. The inflaton corresponds to one of the Cartan fields of the non-compact quaternionic-K{ä}hler cosets.

On sgoldstino-less supergravity models of inflation

We go a step further in the search for a consistent and realistic supergravity model of large-field inflation by building a class of models with the following features: during slow-roll, all the scalar fields other than the inflaton are frozen by large inflaton-dependent masses or removed from the spectrum; at the end of inflation, supersymmetry is spontaneously broken with naturally vanishing classical vacuum energy. We achieve this by combining some geometrical properties of the Kaehler potential with the consistent use of a single nilpotent chiral superfield, in one-to-one correspondence with the supersymmetry-breaking direction in field space at the vacuum.

Symplectic Deformations of Gauged Maximal Supergravity

We identify the space of symplectic deformations of maximal gauged supergravity theories. Coordinates of such space parametrize inequivalent supergravity models with the same gauge group. We apply our procedure to the SO(8) gauging, extending recent analyses. We also study other interesting cases, including Cremmer-Scherk-Schwarz models and gaugings of groups contained in SL(8,R) and in SU*(8).

A new class of N=1 no-scale supergravity models

We introduce a new N=1 no-scale supergravity model with F- and D-term breaking. It contains a single chiral supermultiplet T and a single U(1) vector multiplet U, gauging an axionic shift symmetry. Both supersymmetry and the gauge symmetry are spontaneously broken, with the spin-3/2, spin-1 and spin-1/2 masses sliding along a classical flat direction, with a single real massless scalar in the spectrum. The other degrees of freedom are absorbed by the massive gravitino and vector. We extend our model, under very mild conditions, to general gauge groups and matter content.

BPS domain walls in N=4 supergravity and dual flows

We establish the conditions for supersymmetric domain wall solutions to N=4 gauged supergravity in five dimensions. These read as BPS first-order equations for the warp factor and the scalar fields, driven by a superpotential and supplemented by a set of constraints that we specify in detail. Then we apply our results to certain consistent truncations of IIB supergravity, thus exploring their dual field theory renormalization group flows. We find a universal flow deforming superconformal theories on D3-branes at Calabi-Yau cones. Moreover, we obtain a superpotential for the solution corresponding to the baryonic branch of the Klebanov-Strassler theory, as well as the superpotential for the flow describing D3 and wrapped D5-branes on the resolved conifold.

On the moduli space of spontaneously broken N = 8 supergravity

We analyze the moduli space of spontaneously broken N=8 supergravity theories in 4 dimensions with classical Minkowski vacua. We find that all the known classical vacua, as well as the several new ones we construct here, can be connected by sending some of the moduli to their boundary values. We also show that Cremmer-Scherk-Schwarz models can be viewed as special limits of more general CSO* gaugings, which allow for non-Abelian residual symmetries on the vacuum. Finally, we find that all the classical Minkowski vacua with fully broken supersymmetry found so far are unstable with respect to 1-loop corrections, which drive the effective potential to negative values.

preprint2012arXiv

Quantum corrections to broken N = 8 supergravity

We show that the one-loop effective potential of spontaneously broken N=8 supergravity is calculable and finite at all classical four-dimensional Minkowski vacua without tachyons in the spectrum. The reason is that the supertraces of the quadratic and quartic mass matrices vanish along the classically flat directions: Str M^2 = Str M^4 =0. We also show that Str M^6 = 0 but Str M^8 > 0 in a broad class of vacua with broken supersymmetry on a flat background, which includes all those explicitly identified so far. We find analytical and numerical evidence that the corresponding one-loop effective potential is negative-definite.

Consistent truncations with massive modes and holography

We review the basic features of some recently found consistent Kaluza-Klein truncations including massive modes. We emphasize the general ideas underlying the reduction procedure, then we focus on type IIB supergravity on 5-dimensional manifolds admitting a Sasaki-Einstein structure, which leads to half-maximal gauged supergravity in five dimensions. Finally, we comment on the holographic picture of consistency.

Flow equations and attractors for black holes in N = 2 U(1) gauged supergravity

We investigate the existence of supersymmetric static dyonic black holes with spherical horizon in the context of N= 2 U(1) gauged supergravity in four dimensions. We analyze the conditions for their existence and provide the general first-order flow equations driving the scalar fields and the metric warp factors from the asymptotic AdS4 geometry to the horizon. We work in a general duality-symmetric setup, which allows to describe both electric and magnetic gaugings. We also discuss the attractor mechanism and the issue of moduli (de-)stabilization.

Type IIB supergravity on squashed Sasaki-Einstein manifolds

We provide a consistent N=4 Kaluza-Klein truncation of type IIB supergravity on general 5-dimensional squashed Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. Our reduction ansatz keeps all and only the supergravity modes dual to the universal gauge sector of the associated conformal theories, via the gauge/gravity correspondence. The reduced 5-dimensional model displays remarkable features: it includes both zero-modes as well as massive iterations of the Kaluza-Klein operators on the internal manifold; it contains tensor fields dual to vectors charged under a non-abelian gauge group; it has a scalar potential with a non-supersymmetric AdS vacuum in addition to the supersymmetric one.

Universality of the superpotential for d = 4 extremal black holes

We provide a general strategy to obtain the superpotential W for both BPS and non-BPS extremal black holes in N=2 four dimensional supergravities based on symmetric spaces. This extends the construction of W in terms of U-duality invariants that was presented in previous work on the $t^3$ model. As an application, we explicitly provide W and the solutions to the related gradient flows for the $st^2$ and stu models. The procedure is shown to hold also for the full N=8 theory. The role of flat directions in moduli space is clarified.

Worldsheet theories for non-geometric string backgrounds

We show that twisted doubled tori can be used to construct a general class of worldsheet models describing non-geometric string backgrounds. By employing a first order formulation of interacting chiral bosons, we first refine the analysis on the general conditions of worldsheet Lorentz invariance and then prove that twisted doubled tori provide good duality symmetric backgrounds. Subsequently we apply our general analysis to several examples which enable us to gain new insight on the difference between geometric, locally geometric and genuine non-geometric backgrounds.

preprint2007arXiv

Flow Equations for Non-BPS Extremal Black Holes

We exploit some common features of black hole and domain wall solutions of (super)gravity theories coupled to scalar fields and construct a class of stable extremal black holes that are non-BPS, but still can be described by first-order differential equations. These are driven by a "superpotential'', which replaces the central charge Z in the usual black hole potential. We provide a general procedure for finding this class and deriving the associated "superpotential''. We also identify some other cases which do not belong to this class, but show a similar behaviour.

Compactifications on twisted tori with fluxes and free differential algebras

We describe free differential algebras for non-abelian one and two form gauge potentials in four dimensions deriving the integrability conditions for the corresponding curvatures. We show that a realization of these algebras occurs in M-theory compactifications on twisted tori with constant four-form flux, due to the presence of antisymmetric tensor fields in the reduced theory.

Gauged supergravity algebras from twisted tori compactifications with fluxes

Using the equivalence between Scherk-Schwarz reductions and twisted tori compactifications, we discuss the effective theories obtained by this procedure from M-theory and N =4 type II orientifold constructions with Neveu-Schwarz and Ramond-Ramond form fluxes turned on. We derive the gauge algebras of the effective theories describing their general features, in particular the symplectic embedding in the duality symmetries of the theory. The generic gauge theory is non-abelian and its gauge group is given by the semidirect product of subgroups of SL(7) or SL(p-3) x SL(9-p) for p=3,...,9, with generators describing nilpotent subalgebras of e_{7(7)} or so(6,6) (in M and type II theories respectively).

Scherk-Schwarz reduction of M-theory on G2-manifolds with fluxes

We analyse the 4-dimensional effective supergravity theories obtained from the Scherk--Schwarz reduction of M-theory on twisted 7-tori in the presence of 4-form fluxes. We implement the appropriate orbifold projection that preserves a G2-structure on the internal 7-manifold and truncates the effective field theory to an N=1, D=4 supergravity. We provide a detailed account of the effective supergravity with explicit expressions for the Kaehler potential and the superpotential in terms of the fluxes and of the geometrical data of the internal manifold. Subsequently, we explore the landscape of vacua of M-theory compactifications on twisted tori, where we emphasize the role of geometric fluxes and discuss the validity of the bottom-up approach. Finally, by reducing along isometries of the internal 7-manifold, we obtain superpotentials for the corresponding type IIA backgrounds.

Hypermultiplets, domain walls and supersymmetric attractors

We establish general properties of supersymmetric flow equations and of the superpotential of five-dimensional N = 2 gauged supergravity coupled to vector and hypermultiplets. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for BPS domain walls and find a set of algebraic attractor equations for N = 2 critical points. As an example we describe in detail the gauging of the universal hypermultiplet and a vector multiplet. We study a two-parameter family of superpotentials with supersymmetric AdS critical points and we find, in particular, an N = 2 embedding for the UV-IR solution of Freedman, Gubser, Pilch and Warner of the N = 8 theory. We comment on the relevance of these results for brane world constructions.

Type IIB supergravity compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold with H-fluxes

We discuss the compactification of type IIB supergravity on a Calabi-Yau manifold in the presence of both RR and NS fluxes for the three-form fields. We obtain the classical potential both by direct compactification and by using the techniques of N=2 gauged supergravity in four-dimensions. We briefly discuss the properties of such potential and compare the result with previous derivations.

KK Spectroscopy of Type IIB Supergravity on AdS_5 x T^{11}

We give full details for the computation of the Kaluza--Klein mass spectrum of Type IIB Supergravity on AdS_5 x T^{11}, with T^{11}=SU(2)xSU(2)/U(1), that has recently lead to both stringent tests and interesting predictions on the AdS_5/CFT_4 correspondence for N=1 SCFT's (hep-th/9905226). We exhaustively explain how KK states arrange into SU(2,2|1) supermultiplets, and stress some relevant features of the T^{11} manifold, such as the presence of topological modes in the spectrum originating from the existence of non-trivial 3-cycles. The corresponding Betti vector multiplet is responsible for the extra baryonic symmetry in the boundary CFT. More generally, we use the simple T^{11} coset as a laboratory to revive the technique and show the power of KK harmonic expansion, in view of the present attempts to probe along the same lines also M-theory compactifications and the AdS_4/CFT_3 map.

Spectrum of Type IIB Supergravity on AdS_5 x T^{11}: Predictions on N = 1 SCFT's

We derive the full Kaluza-Klein spectrum of type IIB supergravity compactified on AdS_5 x T^{11} with T^{11} = (SU(2) x SU(2))/U(1). From the knowledge of the spectrum and general multiplet shortening conditions, we make a refined test of the AdS/CFT correspondence, by comparison between various shortenings of SU(2,2|1) supermultiplets on AdS_5 and different families of boundary operators with protected dimensions. Additional towers of long multiplets with rational dimensions, that are not protected by supersymmetry, are also predicted from the supergravity analysis.

D=10, N=IIB Supergravity: Lorentz-invariant actions and duality

We present a manifestly Lorentz invariant and supersymmetric component field action for $D = 10$, type $IIB$ supergravity, using a newly developed method for the construction of actions with chiral bosons, which implies only a single scalar non propagating auxiliary field. With the same method we construct also an action in which the complex two-form gauge potential and its Hodge-dual, a complex six-form gauge potential, appear in a symmetric way in compatibility with supersymmetry and Lorentz invariance. The duals of the two physical scalars of the theory turn out to be described by a $SL(2,R)$ triplet of eight-forms whose curvatures are constrained by a single linear relation. We present also a supersymmetric action in which the basic fields and their duals, six-form and eight-form potentials, appear in a symmetric way. All these actions are manifestly invariant under the global $SL(2,R)$-duality group of $D = 10$, $IIB$ supergravity and are equivalent to each other in that their dynamics corresponds to the well known equations of motion of $ D=10$, $IIB$ supergravity.

The Osp(8|4) singleton action from the supermembrane

Our goal is to study the supermembrane on an $AdS_4 \times \cal M_7$ background, where $\cal M_7$ is a 7--dimensional Einstein manifold with $N$ Killing spinors. This is a direct way to derive the $Osp(N|4)$ singleton field theory with all the additional properties inherited from the geometry of the internal manifold. As a first example we consider the maximally supersymmetric $Osp(8|4)$ singleton corresponding to the choice $\cal M_7 = S^7$. We find the explicit form of the action of the membrane coupled to this background geometry and show its invariance under non--linearly realised superconformal transformations. To do this we introduce a supergroup generalisation of the solvable Lie algebra parametrisation of non--compact coset spaces. We also derive the action of quantum fluctuations around the classical configuration, showing that this is precisely the singleton action. We find that the singleton is simply realised as a free field theory living on flat Minkowski space.
