High-Dimensional Entanglement of Photonic Angular Qudits

We propose a method for generation of entangled photonic states in high dimensions, the so-called qudits, by exploiting quantum correlations of Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) entangled photons, produced via Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion. Diffraction masks containing $N$ angular slits placed in the path of twin photons define a qudit space of dimension $N^2$, spanned by the alternative pathways of OAM-entangled photons. We quantify the high-dimensional entanglement of path-entangled photons by the Concurrence, using an analytic expression valid for pure states. We report numerical results for the Concurrence as a function of the angular aperture size for the case of high-dimensional OAM entanglement and for the case of high-dimensional path entanglement, produced by $N \times M$ angular slits. Our results provide additional means for preparation and characterization of entangled quantum states in high-dimensions, a fundamental resource for quantum simulation and quantum information protocols.

Quantum-enhanced interferometry by entanglement-assisted rejection of environmental noise

Sensing and measurement tasks in severely adverse conditions such as loss, noise and dephasing can be improved by illumination with quantum states of light. Previous results have shown a modest reduction in the number of measurements necessary to achieve a given precision. Here, we compare three illumination strategies for estimating the relative phase in a noisy, lossy interferometer. When including a common phase fluctuation in the noise processes, we show that using an entangled probe achieves an advantage in parameter estimation precision that scales with the number of entangled modes. This work provides a theoretical foundation for the use of highly multimode entangled states of light for practical measurement tasks in experimentally challenging conditions.

Entanglement of truncated quantum states

We investigate the impact of Hilbert-space truncation upon the entanglement of an initially maximally entangled $m\times m$ bipartite quantum state, after propagation under an entanglement-preserving $n \times n$ ($n\geq m$) unitary. Truncation -- physically enforced, e.g., by a detector's finite cross section -- projects the state onto an $s \times s$-dimensional subspace ($3\leq s \leq n$). For a random local unitary evolution, we obtain a simple analytical formula that expresses the truncation-induced entanglement loss as a function of $n$, $m$ and $s$.

Universal entanglement losses induced by angular uncertainty

We study the diffraction of two maximally entangled qubits encoded into spatial modes of light with orbital angular momenta $\pm \hbar l_0$, on angular apertures. Exploiting the uncertainty relation between angular position and momentum, we quantify the diffraction-induced entanglement loss, for different $l_0$, as a function of the angular uncertainty $Δϕ$ induced by the apertures. We demonstrate that the degradation of entanglement follows a universal law parametrised by the product $l_0Δϕ$ alone.} {We study the diffraction of two photonic qubits, which are initially maximally entangled in their orbital angular momenta, on angular apertures. Using the uncertainty relation between angular position and momentum, we show that the diffraction-induced entanglement losses exhibit universal behaviour.
