Electroweak precision tests for asymptotic Grand Unification models

Asymptotic grand unification is an alternative framework to traditional quantitative unification, as the renormalisation flow leads towards an ultra-violet safe fixed point. Phenomenologically, 5-dimensional realisations permit new particles with masses as low as the TeV scale, well below the usual unification scale. We explore the impact of such models on electroweak precision observables, focusing on a minimal SU(5) template for concreteness. We show that current measurements are not sensitive to this class of models. Future colliders, such as CEPC and FCC-ee, can push the 95% limit on the Kaluza-Klein mass up to 2 and 4 TeV, respectively, beyond the direct reach of the LHC programme.

One loop renormalization of 5D gauge-Yukawa theories

The common lore dictates that extra dimensional theories loose predictive power at energies just above the compatification scale, due to the power-law running of bulk coupling. We show that five-dimensional gauge-Yukawa theories can be valid up to arbitrarily high scales, provided: 1) A finite number of terms are required to absorb power-law divergences; 2) All power-law running couplings flow to UV fixed points. By explicitly computing bulk and localized divergences for a gauge-Yukawa theory on $\mathcal{S}^1/\mathbb{Z}_2$, we prove the one-loop renormalization properties of Lagrangians containing only interactions that would be renormalizable in four dimensions. The existence of UV fixed points imposes further constraints on the content of the model. Our results provide a consistency check for the high-energy behavior of any 5D theory, and provide a discrimination between UV consistent models and those that can describe only a handful of Kaluza-Klein modes. Hence, we offer the first concrete step towards an all-order proof of `renormalizability' for gauge-Yukawa theories in five dimensions.

Exploring new possibilities to discover a light pseudo-scalar at LHCb

We study the possibility of observing a light pseudo-scalar $a$ at LHCb. We target the mass region $1 \lesssim m_a \lesssim 60$ GeV and various decay channels, some of which have never been considered before: muon pairs, tau pairs, $D$ meson pairs, and di-photon. We interpret the results in the context of models of 4D Composite Higgs and Partial Compositeness in particular.

Phenomenological aspects of composite Higgs scenarios: exotic scalars and vector-like quarks

Composite Higgs models usually contain additional pseudo Nambu Goldstone bosons and vector-like quarks. We discuss various aspects related to their LHC phenomenology and provide summary plots of exclusion limits using currently available information. We also describe a general parametrisation implemented in a software for Monte Carlo simulations and study the SU(5)/SO(5) scenario as a concrete example.

Phenomenology of unusual top partners in composite Higgs models

We consider a particular composite Higgs model which contains SU(3) color octet top partners besides the usually considered triplet representations. Moreover, color singlet top partners are present as well which can in principle serve as dark matter candidates. We investigate the LHC phenomenology of these unusual top partners. Some of these states could be confused with gluinos predicted in supersymmetric models at first glance.

The W boson mass weighs in on the non-standard Higgs

We consider the implications of the CDF collaboration high-precision measurement of the W boson mass on models with a non-standard Higgs. We show that this requires an enhancement of 3-10% in the non-standard Higgs coupling to the gauge bosons. This is naturally accommodated in dynamical models such as the dilaton Higgs, the Technicolor and glueball Higgs. The needed composite scale between 2 and 3 TeV can also explain the muon g-2 anomaly, as well as possible violations of lepton flavour universality.

Unleashing the full power of LHCb to probe Stealth New Physics

In this paper, we describe the potential of the LHCb experiment to detect Stealth physics. This refers to dynamics beyond the Standard Model that would elude searches that focus on energetic objects or precision measurements of known processes. Stealth signatures include long-lived particles and light resonances that are produced very rarely or together with overwhelming backgrounds. We will discuss why LHCb is equipped to discover this kind of physics at the Large Hadron Collider and provide examples of well-motivated theoretical models that can be probed with great detail at the experiment.

A Singlet Dark Matter in the SU(6)/SO(6) Composite Higgs Model

Singlet scalar Dark Matter can naturally arise in composite Higgs models as an additional stable pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson. We study the properties of such a candidate in a model based on $SU(6)/SO(6)$, with the light quark masses generated by 4-fermion interactions. The presence of non-linearities in the couplings allows to saturate the relic density for masses $400 < m_{\rm DM} < 1000$ GeV, and survive the bound from Direct Detection and Indirect Detection. The viable parameter regions are in reach of the sensitivities of future upgrades, like XENONnT and LZ.

Epidemiological theory of virus variants

We propose a physical theory underlying the temporal evolution of competing virus variants that relies on the existence of (quasi) fixed points capturing the large time scale invariance of the dynamics. To motivate our result we first modify the time-honoured compartmental models of the SIR type to account for the existence of competing variants and then show how their evolution can be naturally re-phrased in terms of flow equations ending at quasi fixed points. As the natural next step we employ (near) scale invariance to organise the time evolution of the competing variants within the effective description of the epidemic Renormalization Group framework. We test the resulting theory against the time evolution of COVID-19 virus variants that validate the theory empirically.

Anatomy of the Inert Two Higgs Doublet Model in the light of the LHC and non-LHC Dark Matter Searches

The inert Two Higgs Doublet Model (i2HDM) is a theoretically well-motivated example of a minimal consistent Dark Matter(DM) model which provides mono-jet, mono-Z, mono-Higgs and Vector-Boson-Fusion+Missing Transverse Momentum signatures at the LHC, complemented by signals in direct and indirect DM search experiments. In this paper we have performed a detailed analysis of the constraints in the full 5D parameter space of the i2HDM, coming from perturbativity, unitarity, electroweak precision data, Higgs data from LHC, DM relic density, direct/indirect DM detection and LHC mono-jet analysis, as well as implications of experimental LHC studies on disappearing charged tracks relevant to high DM mass region. We demonstrate the complementarity of the above constraints and present projections for future LHC data and direct DM detection experiments to probe further i2HDM parameter space. The model is implemented into the CalcHEP and micrOMEGAs packages, which are publicly available at the HEPMDB database, and is ready for a further exploration in the context of the LHC, relic density and DM direct detection.

Beyond the Standard Model in Vector Boson Scattering Signatures

The high-energy scattering of massive electroweak bosons, known as vector boson scattering (VBS), is a sensitive probe of new physics. VBS signatures will be thoroughly and systematically investigated at the LHC with the large data samples available and those that will be collected in the near future. Searches for deviations from Standard Model (SM) expectations in VBS facilitate tests of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking (EWSB) mechanism. Current state-of-the-art tools and theory developments, together with the latest experimental results, and the studies foreseen for the near future are summarized. A review of the existing Beyond the SM (BSM) models that could be tested with such studies as well as data analysis strategies to understand the interplay between models and the effective field theory paradigm for interpreting experimental results are discussed. This document is a summary of the EU COST network "VBScan" workshop on the sensitivity of VBS processes for BSM frameworks that took place December 4-5, 2019 at the LIP facilities in Lisbon, Portugal. In this manuscript we outline the scope of the workshop, summarize the different contributions from theory and experiment, and discuss the relevant findings.

Fundamental Composite Dynamics: A Review

We introduce fundamental gauge theories that can be employed to construct informed composite bright and dark extensions of the Standard Model, within and beyond the standard paradigms. The gap between theory and experiments is bridged by providing predictions and ways to test them, for example, at the Fermi scale and via precision flavor experiments. We will review time-honoured paradigms from (walking) technicolor to composite Goldstone Higgs and discuss their features and differences. Standard model fermion mass generation in composite models will also be discussed along with the challenges and opportunities that it offers. To be concrete and pedagogical we will concentrate on minimal constructions featuring strongly coupled gauge theories supporting the global symmetry breaking pattern SU(4)/Sp(4). The most minimal underlying fundamental description consists of an SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermions transforming according to the fundamental representation of the gauge group. This minimal choice enables us to use first principle lattice results to predict the massive spectrum for models of composite (Goldstone) Higgs dynamics and strongly interacting dark matter, of immediate impact for current and future experimental searches. Because composite dynamics embraces a rich spectrum of theories with dynamics ranging from QCD-like behaviour to (near) conformal one, we also report here the state-of-the-art of numerical and analytic properties of several strongly coupled theories including their spectrum, phase diagrams and, when applicable, their (near) conformal data.

Higgs boson emerging from the dark

We propose a new non-thermal mechanism of dark matter production based on vacuum misalignment. A global $X$-charge asymmetry is generated at high temperatures, under which both the will-be Higgs and the dark matter are charged. At lower energies, the vacuum changes alignment and breaks the $U(1)_X$, leading to the emergence of the Higgs and of a fraction of charge asymmetry stored in the stable dark matter relic. This mechanism can be present in a wide variety of models based on vacuum misalignment, and we demonstrate it in a composite Higgs template model, where all the necessary ingredients are naturally present. A light pseudo-scalar $η$ is always predicted, with interesting implications for cosmology, future supernova observations and exotic $Z \to γη$ decays.

Interplay of social distancing and border restrictions for pandemics (COVID-19) via the epidemic Renormalisation Group framework

We demonstrate that the epidemic renormalisation group approach to pandemics provides an effective and simple way to investigate the dynamics of disease transmission and spreading across different regions of the world. The framework also allows for reliable projections on the impact of travel limitations and social distancing measures on global epidemic spread. We test and calibrate it on reported cases while unveiling the mechanism that governs the delay in the relative peaks of newly infected cases among different regions of the globe. We discover that social distancing measures are more effective than travel limitations across borders in delaying the epidemic peak. We further provide the link to compartmental models such as the simplistic and time-honoured SIR-like models. We also show how to generalise the framework to account for the interactions across several regions of the world, replacing or complementing large scale simulations.

Minimal Spin-one Isotriplet Dark Matter

In this work we present a simple extension of the Standard Model that contains, as the only new physics component, a massive spin-one matter field in the adjoint representation of $SU(2)_{L}$. In order to be consistent with perturbative unitarity, the vector field must be odd under a $Z_{2}$ symmetry. Radiative corrections make the neutral component of the triplet ($V^{0}$) slightly lighter than the charged ones. We show that $V^{0}$ can be the dark matter particle while satisfying all current bounds if it has a mass between $2.8$ and $3.8$ TeV. We present the current limit on the model parameter space from highly complementary experimental constraints including dark matter relic density measurement, dark matter direct and indirect detection searches, LHC data on Higgs couplings to photons and LHC data on disappearing track searches. We show that the two-dimensional parameter space can be substantially covered by disappearing track searches at a future 100 TeV hadron collider, which will probe DM mass upto about 1.2 TeV.

Mining Google and Apple mobility data: Temporal Anatomy for COVID-19 Social Distancing

We employ the Google and Apple mobility data to identify, quantify and classify different degrees of social distancing and characterise their imprint on the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe and in the United States. We identify the period of enacted social distancing via Google and Apple data, independently from the political decisions. Interestingly we observe a general decrease in the infection rate occurring two to five weeks after the onset of mobility reduction for the European countries and the American states.

Second wave COVID-19 pandemics in Europe: A Temporal Playbook

A second wave pandemic constitutes an imminent threat to society, with a potentially immense toll in terms of human lives and a devastating economic impact. We employ the epidemic renormalisation group approach to pandemics, together with the first wave data for COVID-19, to efficiently simulate the dynamics of disease transmission and spreading across different European countries. The framework allows us to model, not only inter and extra European border control effects, but also the impact of social distancing for each country. We perform statistical analyses averaging on different level of human interaction across Europe and with the rest of the world. Our results are neatly summarised as an animation reporting the time evolution of the first and second waves of the European COVID-19 pandemic. Our temporal playbook of the second wave pandemic can be used by governments, financial markets, the industries and individual citizens, to efficiently time, prepare and implement local and global measures.

The Techni-Pati-Salam Composite Higgs

Composite Higgs models can be extended to the Planck scale by means of the partially unified partial compositeness (PUPC) framework. We present in detail the Techni-Pati-Salam model, based on a renormalizable gauge theory $SU(8)_{PS}\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$. We demonstrate that masses and mixings for all generations of standard model fermions can be obtained via partial compositeness at low energy, with four-fermion operators mediated by either heavy gauge bosons or scalars. The strong dynamics is predicted to be that of a confining $Sp(4)_{\rm HC}$ gauge group, with hyper-fermions in the fundamental and two-index anti-symmetric representations, with fixed multiplicities. This motivates for Lattice studies of the Infra-Red near-conformal walking phase, with results that may validate or rule out the model. This is the first complete and realistic attempt at providing an Ultra-Violet completion for composite Higgs models with top partial compositeness. In the baryon-number conserving vacuum, the theory also predicts a Dark Matter candidate, with mass in the few TeV range, protected by semi-integer baryon number.

Towards a fundamental safe theory of composite Higgs and Dark Matter

We present a novel paradigm that allows to define a composite theory at the electroweak scale that is well defined all the way up to any energy by means of safety in the UV. The theory flows from a complete UV fixed point to an IR fixed point for the strong dynamics (which gives the desired walking) before generating a mass gap at the TeV scale. We discuss two models featuring a composite Higgs, Dark Matter and partial compositeness for all SM fermions. The UV theories can also be embedded in a Pati-Salam partial unification, thus removing the instability generated by the $\mbox{U}(1)$ running. Finally, we find a Dark Matter candidate still allowed at masses of $260$ GeV, or $1.5 \sim 2$ TeV, where the latter mass range will be covered by next generation direct detection experiments.

Exotic decays of top partners with charge 5/3: bounds and opportunities

Exotic decays of top partners in new bosons are the norm in realistic models of a composite Higgs. We focus on the custodial charge-$5/3$ partner, which normally decays exclusively into $tW^+$. The new channels include a colour-sextet, $X_{5/3} \to \bar{b} π_6$, as well as singly and doubly charged scalars, $X_{5/3} \to t ϕ^+$, $b ϕ^{++}$. We use existing same-sign lepton searches to show that the new final states are constrained at the same level as the standard one. At the same time, exotic final states also offer opportunities for improvement: examples include a hard photon in $X_{5/3}\rightarrow tϕ^+\rightarrow tW^+γ$ decays, and top-rich channels which arise in several exotic $X_{5/3}$ decays.

An Ultraviolet Chiral Theory of the Top for the Fundamental Composite (Goldstone) Higgs

We introduce a scalar-less anomaly free chiral gauge theory that serves as natural ultraviolet completion of models of fundamental composite (Goldstone) Higgs dynamics. The new theory is able to generate the top mass and furthermore features a built-in protection mechanism that naturally suppresses the bottom mass. At low energies the theory predicts new fractionally charged fermions, and a number of four-fermion operators that, besides being relevant for the generation of the top mass, also lead to an intriguing phenomenology for the new states predicted by the theory.

Dark matter and localised fermions from spherical orbifolds?

We study a class of six-dimensional models based on positive curvature surfaces (spherical 2-orbifolds) as extra-spaces. Using the Newman-Penrose formalism, we discuss the particle spectrum in this class of models. The fermion spectrum problem, which has been addressed with flux compactifications in the past, can be avoided using localised fermions. In this framework, we find that there are four types of geometry compatible with the existence of a stable dark matter candidate and we study the simplest case in detail. Using the complementarity between collider resonance searches and relic density constraints, we show that this class of models is under tension, unless the model lies in a funnel region characterised by a resonant Higgs s-channel in the dark matter annihilation.

Light 't Hooft Top Partners

Vector-like quarks, usually dubbed top partners, are a common presence in composite Higgs models. Being composite objects, their mass is expected to be of the order of their inverse size, that is the condensation scale of the new strong interactions. Light top partners, while not being a generic prediction, are however often considered in phenomenological models. We suggest that their lightness may be due to the matching of global 't Hooft anomalies of the underlying theory. We check this mechanism in explicit models showing that, in one case, composite fermions with the quantum numbers of the top quark obtain a mass which is controlled by a soft breaking term and can be made parametrically small.

Singlets in Composite Higgs Models in light of the LHC di-photon searches

Models of compositeness can successfully address the origin of the Higgs boson, as a pseudo Nambu Goldstone boson (pNGB) of a spontaneously broken global symmetry, and flavour physics via the partial compositeness mechanism. If the dynamics is generated by a confining gauge group with fermionic matter content, there exists only a finite set of models that have the correct properties to account for the Higgs and top partners at the same time. In this letter we explore the theory space of this class of models: remarkably, all of them contain - beyond the pNGB Higgs - a pNGB singlet, $a$, which couples to Standard Model gauge bosons via Wess-Zumino-Witten interactions, thus providing naturally a resonance in di-boson at the LHC. With the assumption that the recently reported di-photon excess at 750 GeV at the LHC arises from the a-resonance, we propose a generic approach on how to delineate the best candidate for composite Higgs models with top-partners. We find that constraints from other di-boson searches severely reduce the theory space of the models under consideration. For the models which can explain the di-photon excess, we make precise and testable predictions for the width and other di-boson resonance searches.

Towards Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter on Nilmanifolds

We present a first study of the field spectrum on a class of negatively-curved compact spaces: nilmanifolds or twisted tori. This is a case where analytical results can be obtained, allowing to check numerical methods. We focus on the Kaluza-Klein expansion of a scalar field. The results are then applied to a toy model where a natural Dark Matter candidate arises as a stable massive state of the bulk scalar.

Vector and Axial-vector resonances in composite models of the Higgs boson

We provide a non-linear realisation of composite Higgs models in the context of the SU(4)/Sp(4) symmetry breaking pattern, where the effective Lagrangian of the spin-0 and spin-1 resonances is constructed via the CCWZ prescription using the Hidden Symmetry formalism. We investigate the EWPT constraints by accounting the effects from reduced Higgs couplings and integrating out heavy spin-1 resonances. This theory emerges from an underlying theory of gauge interactions with fermions, thus first principle lattice results predict the massive spectrum in composite Higgs models. This model can be used as a template for the phenomenology of composite Higgs models at the LHC and at future 100 TeV colliders, as well as for other application. In this work, we focus on the formalism for spin-1 resonances and their bounds from di-lepton and di-boson searches at the LHC.

A scalar hint from the diboson excess?

In view of the recent diboson resonant excesses reported by both ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, we suggest that a new weak singlet pseudo-scalar particle, $η_W$, may decay into two weak bosons while being produced in gluon fusion at the LHC. The couplings to the gauge bosons can arise from a Wess-Zumino-Witten anomaly term and thus we study an effective model based on the anomaly term as a well motivated phenomenological model. In models where the pseudo-scalar arises as a composite state, the coefficients of the anomalous couplings can be related to the fermion components of the underlying dynamics. We provide an example to test the feasibility of the idea.

Anarchic Yukawas and top partial compositeness: the flavour of a successful marriage

The top quark can be naturally singled out from other fermions in the Standard Model due to its large mass, of the order of the electroweak scale. We follow this reasoning in models of pseudo Nambu Goldstone Boson composite Higgs, which may derive from an underlying confining dynamics. We consider a new class of flavour models, where the top quark obtains its mass via partial compositeness, while the lighter fermions acquire their masses by a deformation of the dynamics generated at a high flavour scale. One interesting feature of such scenario is that it can avoid all the flavour constraints without the need of flavour symmetries, since the flavour scale can be pushed high enough. We show that both flavour conserving and violating constraints can be satisfied with top partial compositeness without invoking any flavour symmetry for the up-type sector, in the case of the minimal SO(5)/SO(4) coset with top partners in the four-plet and singlet of SO(4). In the down-type sector, some degree of alignment is required if all down-type quarks are elementary. We show that taking the bottom quark partially composite provides a dynamical explanation for the hierarchy causing this alignment. We present explicit realisations of this mechanism which do not require to include additional bottom partner fields. Finally, these conclusions are generalised to scenarios with non-minimal cosets and top partners in larger representations.

Composite scalars at the LHC: the Higgs, the Sextet and the Octet

We present a phenomenological theory of scalar particles that transform as a sextet and an octet of QCD interactions. These particles may arise as light bound states of a fundamental dynamics giving rise to a composite Higgs boson and partial compositeness for the top. As a concrete example, we discuss an explicit UV completion based on the SU(4)/Sp(4) coset, where QCD colour is carried by additional fundamental fermions charged under the confining gauge group. Top partners, as well as potentially even lighter coloured scalars, arise as bound states of the coloured fermions. We study production and detection at LHC Run I and II of the octet and sextet, setting lower limits on masses and couplings to Standard Model particles using existing 8 TeV analyses. We finally explore prospects for the ongoing 13 TeV Run II: we focus on final states with two same sign leptons, that have the potential to discriminate the sextet.

Fundamental Composite 2HDM: SU(N) with 4 flavours

We present a new model of composite Higgs based on a gauged SU(N) group with 4 Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation. At low energy, the model has a global symmetry SU(4)$\times$SU(4) broken to the diagonal SU(4), containing 2 Higgs doublets in the coset. We study in detail the generation of the top mass via 4-fermion interactions, and the issue of the vacuum alignment. In particular, we prove that, without loss of generality, the vacuum can always be aligned with one doublet. Under certain conditions on the top pre-Yukawas, the second doublet, together with the additional triplets, is stable and can thus play the role of Dark Matter. This model can therefore be an example of composite inert-2HDM model.

Interplay of vector-like top partner multiplets in a realistic mixing set-up

The ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC have performed analyses on the existing data sets, studying the case of one vector-like fermion or multiplet coupling to the standard model Yukawa sector. In the near future, with more data available, these experimental collaborations will start to investigate more realistic cases. The presence of more than one extra vector-like multiplet is indeed a common situation in many extensions of the standard model. The interplay of these vector-like multiplet between precision electroweak bounds, flavour and collider phenomenology is a important question in view of establishing bounds or for the discovery of physics beyond the standard model. In this work we study the phenomenological consequences of the presence of two vector-like multiplets. We analyse the constraints on such scenarios from tree-level data and oblique corrections for the case of mixing to each of the SM generations. In the present work, we limit to scenarios with two top-like partners and no mixing in the down-sector.

The Diboson Excess: Experimental Situation and Classification of Explanations; A Les Houches Pre-Proceeding

We examine the `diboson' excess at $\sim 2$ TeV seen by the LHC experiments in various channels. We provide a comparison of the excess significances as a function of the mass of the tentative resonance and give the signal cross sections needed to explain the excesses. We also present a survey of available theoretical explanations of the resonance, classified in three main approaches. Unitarity implications of diboson resonance in the TeV region for Higgs physics

We investigate the implications of a putative new resonance in the TeV region coupled to the weak bosons. By studying perturbative unitarity in longitudinal WW scattering, we find that a weakly coupled spin-1 resonance, that explains the ATLAS diboson excesses, is allowed with a SM-like Higgs. On the other hand, larger values of the resonance couplings, preferred in models of strong dynamics, would imply either sizeable reduction of the Higgs couplings or new physics, beyond the diboson resonance, at a few TeV.

Doubly Charged Lepton from an Exotic Doublet at the LHC

We studied the signatures at the LHC of the electroweak SU(2) lepton doublet which embeds a doubly charged lepton. The doubly charged lepton pair and single production rates, which are different from the triplet case, are studied and all the detectable decay modes are considered. We also applied the same kinematic cuts as in triplet case to reduce the background at LHC and the needed integrated luminosities to find the doubly charged leptons with different masses are analyzed. We also suggested a method to distinguish the exotic lepton doublet and triplet.

Fully hadronic decays of a singly produced vector-like top partner at the LHC

Single production of vector-like top partners is becoming a major focus of new searches, as the increasing mass limits on vector-like quarks obtained by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations are such that single production is becoming competitive with respect to pair production. Typically searches focus on decays containing leptons in the final state in order to have less background from the Standard Model processes. However the current centre of mass energies available in the latest LHC runs limit the searches to low masses. Fully hadronic final states may be an alternative option for discovery, as they allow a larger number of signal events if backgrounds can be kept under control. We study the fully hadronic decay of a singly produced vector-like top partner and we show a strategy to extract the signal over the background, considering as a benchmark the 20 fb^-1 of data collected at 8 TeV with the latest run of the LHC.

Higgs couplings: disentangling New Physics with off-shell measurements

After the discovery of a scalar resonance, resembling the Higgs boson, its couplings have been extensively studied via the measurement of various production and decay channels on the invariant mass peak. Recently, it has been suggested the possibility to use off-shell measurements: in particular, CMS has published results based on the high- invariant mass cross section of the process $gg \to ZZ$, which contains the contribution of the Higgs. While this measurement has been interpreted as a constraint on the Higgs width after very specific assumptions are taken on the Higgs couplings, in this letter we show that a much more model-independent interpretation is possible.

Higgsphobic and fermiophobic Z' as a single dark matter candidate

A spin-1 Z' particle as a single dark matter candidate is investigated by assuming that it does not directly couple to the Higgs boson and standard model fermions and does not mix with the photon and Z boson. The remaining dominant vertices are quartic Z'Z'ZZ and Z'Z'W+W-, which can induce effective Z'Z'q\bar{q} couplings through standard-model gauge-boson loops. We discuss constraints from the cosmological thermal relic density, and direct and indirect-detection experiments, and find that a dark Z' can only exist above the W boson mass threshold, and the effective quartic coupling of Z'Z'VV is bounded in the region of 10^{-3}~10^{-2}.

Revisiting monotop production at the LHC

Scenarios of new physics where a single top quark can be produced in association with large missing energy (monotop) have been recently studied both from the theoretical point of view and by experimental collaborations. We revisit the originally proposed monotop setup by embedding the effective couplings of the top quark in an SU(2)L invariant formalism. We show that minimality selects one model for each of the possible production mechanisms: a scalar field coupling to a right-handed top quark and an invisible fermion when the monotop system is resonantly produced, and a vector field mediating the interactions of a dark sector to right-handed quarks for the non-resonant production mode. We study in detail constraints on the second class of scenarios, originating from contributions to standard single top processes when the mediator is lighter than the top quark and from the dark matter relic abundance when the mediator is heavier than the top quark.

Triplet with a doubly-charged lepton at the LHC

We studied the signatures of an electroweak SU(2) lepton triplet which contains a doubly charged heavy lepton. The most interesting and easily detected final states are originating from the doubly charged lepton pair and single production, that we analyzed at a center of mass energy of 14 TeV. We propose useful kinematic cuts to reduce the backgrounds and computed the integrated luminosity needed to discover or exclude the doubly charged leptons for various masses.

Heavy Vector-like quark with charge 5/3 at the LHC

We study the phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider of an exotic vector-like quark X with charge +5/3. We relax the assumption of a 100% branching into W t and allow for an arbitrary rate into W plus light quarks, thus covering all possible scenarios. Sizeable decays into light quarks can be achieved, for instance, in a model where the X quark is embedded in a doublet with hypercharge 7/6, which also contains a t' quark. We study the bounds on the parameter space of this model, and perform a detailed simulation of the X pair production and decays. We show that the final state with W t W q, where q=u or c, contributes to the same sign dilepton searches, and that the reach can be improved with alternative cuts optimised on such final state.

Higgs couplings beyond the Standard Model

We consider the Higgs boson decay processes and its production, and provide a parameterisation tailored for testing models of new physics beyond the Standard Model. We also compare our formalism to other existing parameterisations based on scaling factors in front of the couplings and to effective Lagrangian approaches. Different formalisms allow to best address different aspects of the Higgs boson physics. The choice of a particular parameterisation depends on a non-obvious balance of quantity and quality of the available experimental data, envisaged purpose for the parameterisation and degree of model independence, importance of the radiative corrections, scale at which new particles appear explicitly in the physical spectrum. At present only simple parameterisations with a limited number of fit parameters can be performed, but this situation will improve with the forthcoming experimental LHC data. Detailed fits can only be performed by the experimental collaborations at present, as the full information on the different decay modes is not completely available in the public domain. It is therefore important that different approaches are considered and that the most detailed information is made available to allow testing the different aspects of the Higgs boson physics and the possible hints beyond the Standard Model.

Is F-term hybrid inflation natural within minimal supersymmetric SO(10)?

We examine whether F-term supersymmetric hybrid inflation can be embedded within the minimal SO(10) model, in a natural way. We show that none of the singlets of the Standard Model symmetries in the minimal set of SO(10) representations can satisfy the conditions which are necessary for a scalar field to play the role of the inflaton. As a consequence, one has to introduce an extra scalar field, which however may spoil the naturalness of inflation within the context of SO(10). Nevertheless, if we add an extra scalar field, we are then able to construct a model that can accommodate flat directions while it preserves the stability of the inflationary valley.

LHC Missing-Transverse-Energy Constraints on Models with Universal Extra Dimensions

We consider the performance of the ATLAS and CMS searches for events with missing transverse energy, which were originally motivated by supersymmetry, in constraining extensions of the Standard Model based on extra dimensions, in which the mass differences between recurrences at the same level are generically smaller than the mass hierarchies in typical supersymmetric models. We consider first a toy model with pair-production of a single vector-like quark U1 decaying into a spin-zero stable particle A1 and jet, exploring the sensitivity of the CMS alphaT and ATLAS meff analysis to U1 mass and the U1-A1 mass difference. For this purpose we use versions of the Delphes generic detector simulation with CMS and ATLAS cards, which have been shown to reproduce the published results of CMS and ATLAS searches for supersymmetry. We then explore the sensitivity of these searches to a specific model with two universal extra dimensions, whose signal is dominated by the pair production of quark recurrences, including searches with leptons. We find that the LHC searches have greater sensitivity to this more realistic model, due partly to the contributions of signatures with leptons, and partly to events with large missing transverse energy generated by the decays of higher-level Kaluza-Klein recurrences. We find that the CMS alphaT analysis with ~5/fb of data at 7 TeV excludes a recurrence scale of 600 GeV at a confidence level above 99%, increasing to 99.9% when combined with the CMS single-lepton search, whereas a recurrence scale of 700 GeV is disfavoured at the 72% confidence level.

Searching for a lighter Higgs: parametrisation and sample tests

The structure of the Higgs sector is a major issue in the quest of a detailed description of the electroweak interactions. Most of the effort is devoted to the study of the standard model--like Higgs boson at 126 GeV, however the experimental collaborations at the LHC are also searching for extra scalar particles whose presence may hint to an extended Higgs sector, typical of many extensions of the standard model. We study a model independent parametrisation of a scalar particle lighter than the 126 GeV Higgs boson, which may be easily implemented in the ongoing searches by ATLAS and CMS. Indeed many effective Lagrangians/parametrisations used at present for the description of the Higgs sector implicitly assume that no light particles other than the standard model ones are present in the spectrum. We therefore introduce a parametrisation of a two scalars model, one corresponding to the 126 GeV Higgs boson and the other to a lighter scalar. After the introduction of such a tool, we consider two typical examples falling in this category, in order to illustrate the use of our formalism: the two Higgs doublet model and the next to minimal supersymmetric standard model. Our results agree with the specific studies performed for these models. Furthermore, employing such a generic parametrisation allows us to translate the bounds to any model beyond the standard model falling into this class.

Dark Matter in a twisted bottle

The real projective plane is a compact, non-orientable orbifold of Euler characteristic 1 without boundaries, which can be described as a twisted Klein bottle. We shortly review the motivations for choosing such a geometry among all possible two-dimensional orbifolds, while the main part of the study will be devoted to dark matter study and limits in Universal Extra Dimensional (UED) models based on this peculiar geometry. In the following we consider such a UED construction based on the direct product of the real projective plane with the standard four-dimensional Minkowski space-time and discuss its relevance as a model of a weakly interacting Dark Matter candidate. One important difference with other typical UED models is the origin of the symmetry leading to the stability of the dark matter particle. This symmetry in our case is a remnant of the six-dimensional Minkowski space-time symmetry partially broken by the compactification. Another important difference is the very small mass splitting between the particles of a given Kaluza-Klein tier, which gives a very important role to co-annihilation effects. Finally the role of higher Kaluza-Klein tiers is also important and is discussed together with a detailed numerical description of the influence of the resonances.

Heavy Vector-like Top Partners at the LHC and flavour constraints

We consider the phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider of new heavy vector-like quarks which couple mainly to the third generation quarks via Yukawa interactions, with special emphasis on non-standard doublet representations which are less constrained from present data. We also discuss in detail the flavour limits at tree level and loop level and implications of a generalised CKM mixing matrix to these cases.

Superluminal neutrinos in long baseline experiments and SN1987a

Precise tests of Lorentz invariance in neutrinos can be performed using long baseline experiments such as MINOS and OPERA or neutrinos from astrophysical sources. The MINOS collaboration reported a measurement of the muonic neutrino velocities that hints to super-luminal propagation, very recently confirmed at 6 sigma by OPERA. We consider a general parametrisation which goes beyond the usual linear or quadratic violation considered in quantum-gravitational models. We also propose a toy model showing why Lorentz violation can be specific to the neutrino sector and give rise to a generic energy behaviour E^alpha, where alpha is not necessarily an integer number. Supernova bounds and the preferred MINOS and OPERA regions show a tension, due to the absence of shape distortion in the neutrino bunch in the far detector of MINOS. The energy independence of the effect has also been pointed out by the OPERA results.

Four tops on the real projective plane at LHC

We explore the four top signal ttbar ttbar at the 7 TeV Large Hadron Collider as a probe of physics beyond the standard model. Enhancement of the corresponding cross-section with respect to the Standard Model value can probe the electroweak symmetry breaking sector or test extra dimensional models with heavy Kaluza-Klein gluons and quarks. We perform a detailed analysis including background and detector simulation in the specific case of a universal extra-dimensional model with two extra dimensions compactified using the geometry of the real projective plane. For masses around 600 GeV, a discovery is possible for an effective cross section above 210 fb (36 fb) for 1/fb (10/fb) of integrated luminosity. This implies a branching ratio in tops of the (1,1) heavy photon above 13% (5%). Furthermore, the 4-top signal from the (2,0) and (0,2) tiers can be discovered with an integrated luminosity of 3.5/fb. The results of our simulation can be easily adapted to other models since the background processes are identical. Concerning the signal, typical production mechanisms for the ttbar ttbar signal are similar even if cross-section values may vary considerably depending on the model and the spectrum of the new particles.

The Universal Real Projective Plane: LHC phenomenology at one Loop

The Real Projective Plane is the lowest dimensional orbifold which, when combined with the usual Minkowski space-time, gives rise to a unique model in six flat dimensions possessing an exact Kaluza Klein (KK) parity as a relic symmetry of the broken six dimensional Lorentz group. As a consequence of this property, any model formulated on this background will include a stable Dark Matter candidate. Loop corrections play a crucial role because they remove mass degeneracy in the tiers of KK modes and induce new couplings which mediate decays. We study the full one loop structure of the corrections by means of counter-terms localised on the two singular points. As an application, the phenomenology of the (2,0) and (0,2) tiers is discussed at the LHC. We identify promising signatures with single and di-lepton, top antitop and 4 tops: in the dilepton channel, present data from CMS and ATLAS may already exclude KK masses up to 250 GeV, while by next year they may cover the whole mass range preferred by WMAP data.

Bounds and Decays of New Heavy Vector-like Top Partners

We study the phenomenology of new heavy vector-like fermions that couple to the third generation quarks via Yukawa interactions, covering all the allowed representations under the standard model gauge groups. We first review tree and loop level bounds on these states. We then discuss tree level decays and loop-induced decays to photon or gluon plus top. The main decays at tree level are to W b and/or Z and Higgs plus top via the new Yukawa couplings. The radiative loop decays turn out to be quite close to the naive estimate: in all cases, in the allowed perturbative parameter space, the branching ratios are mildly sensitive on the new Yukawa couplings and small. We therefore conclude that the new states can be observed at the LHC and that the tree level decays can allow to distinguish the different representations. Moreover, the observation of the radiative decays at the LHC would suggest a large Yukawa coupling in the non-perturbative regime.

A Dark Matter candidate from Lorentz Invariance in 6 Dimensions

We study the unique 6 dimensional orbifold with chiral fermions where a stable dark matter candidate is present due to Lorentz invariance on the orbifold, with no additional discrete symmetries imposed by hand. We propose a model of Universal Extra Dimensions where a scalar photon of few hundred GeV is a good candidate for dark matter. The spectrum of the model is characteristic of the geometry, and it has clear distinctive features compared to previous models of Kaluza-Klein dark matter. The 5 dimensional limit of this model is the minimal model of natural Kaluza-Klein dark matter. Notwithstanding the low mass range preferred by cosmology, the model will be a challenge for the LHC due to the relatively small splitting between the states in the same KK level.

Higgs to Gamma Gamma beyond the Standard Model

We consider the H to gamma gamma decay process and the gluon fusion production of a light Higgs, and provide a general framework for testing models of new physics beyond the Standard Model. We apply our parametrisation to typical models extending the Standard Model in 4 and 5 dimensions, and show how the parametrisation can be used to discriminate between different scenarios of new physics at the Large Hadron Collider and at future Linear Colliders.

The AdS/CFT/Unparticle Correspondence

We examine the correspondence between the anti-de Sitter (AdS) description of conformal field theories (CFTs) and the unparticle description of CFTs. We show how unparticle actions are equivalent to holographic boundary actions for fields in AdS, and how massive unparticles provide a new type of infrared cutoff that can be simply implemented in AdS by a soft breaking of conformal symmetry. We also show that processes involving scalar unparticles with dimensions d_s<2 or fermion unparticles with dimensions d_f<5/2 are insensitive to ultraviolet cutoff effects. Finally we show that gauge interactions for unparticles can be described by bulk gauge interactions in AdS and that they correspond to minimal gauging of the non-local effective action, and we compute the fermion unparticle production cross-section.

Oblique Corrections from Higgsless Models in Warped Space

We calculate the tree-level oblique corrections to electroweak precision observables generated in higgless models of electroweak symmetry breaking with a 5D SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_{B-L} gauge group on a warped background. In the absence of brane induced kinetic terms (and equal left and right gauge couplings) we find the S parameter to be ~1.15, while T,U~0, as in technicolor theories. Planck brane induced kinetic terms and unequal left-right couplings can lower S, however for sufficiently low values of S tree-level unitarity will be lost. A kinetic term localized on the TeV brane for SU(2)_D will generically increase S, however an induced kinetic term for U(1)_{B-L} on the TeV brane will lower S. With an appropriate choice of the value of this induced kinetic term S~0 can be achieved. In this case the mass of the lowest Z' mode will be lowered to about ~300 GeV.
