Exchange effects in a cold plasma

We have studied the exchange corrections to linear electrostatic wave propagation in a plasma using a quantum kinetic formalism. Specifically we have considered the zero temperature limit. In order to simplify the calculations we have focused on the long wavelength limit, i.e. wavelengths much longer than the de Broglie wavelength. For the case of ion-acoustic waves we have calculated the exchange correction both to the damping rate and the real part of the frequency. For Langmuir waves the frequency shift due to exchange effects is found. Our results are compared with the frequency shifts deduced from commonly used exchange potentials which are computed from density functional theory.

Evolution of magnetic field generated by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability

The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in an ionized plasma is considered with a focus on the generation of magnetic field via the Biermann battery mechanisms. The problem is studied through direct numerical simulations of two counter-directed flows in 2D geometry. The simulations demonstrate the formation of eddies and their further interaction resulting in a large single vortex. At early stages, the generated magnetic field evolves due to the baroclinic term in the induction equation, revealing significantly different structures from the vorticity field, despite the fact that magnetic field and vorticity obey identical equations. At later times, the magnetic field exhibits complex behavior and continues to grow even after a hydrodynamic vortex has developed.

Three-wave interaction and Manley-Rowe relations in quantum hydrodynamics

The theory for nonlinear three-wave interaction in magnetized plasmas is reconsidered using quantum hydrodynamics. The general coupling coefficients are calculated for a generalized Bohm de Broglie term. It is found that the Manley-Rowe relations are fulfilled only if the form of the particle dispersive term coincides with the standard expression. The implications of our results are discussed.

Linear and nonlinear wave propagation in weakly relativistic quantum plasmas

We consider a recently derived kinetic model for weakly relativistic quantum plasmas. We find that that the effects of spin-orbit interaction and Thomas precession may alter the linear dispersion relation for a magnetized plasma in case of high plasma densities and/or strong magnetic fields. Furthermore, the ponderomotive force induced by an electromagnetic pulse is studied for an unmagnetized plasma. It turns out that for this case the spin-orbit interaction always give a significant contribution to the quantum part of the ponderomotive force.

A linearized kinetic theory of spin-1/2 particles in magnetized plasmas

We have considered linear kinetic theory including the electron spin properties in a magnetized plasma. The starting point is a mean field Vlasov-like equation, derived from a fully quantum mechanical treatment, where effects from the electron spin precession and the magnetic dipole force is taken into account. The general conductivity tensor is derived, including both the free current contribution, as well as the magnetization current associated with the spin contribution. We conclude the paper with an extensive discussion of the quantum-mechanical boundary where we list parameter conditions that must be satisfied for various quantum effects to be influential.

The influence of strong field vacuum polarization on gravitational-electromagnetic wave interaction

The interaction between gravitational and electromagnetic waves in the presence of a static magnetic field is studied. The field strength of the static field is allowed to surpass the Schwinger critical field, such that the quantum electrodynamical (QED) effects of vacuum polarization and magnetization are significant. Equations governing the interaction are derived and analyzed. It turns out that the energy conversion from gravitational to electromagnetic waves can be significantly altered due to the QED effects. The consequences of our results are discussed.

Scalar quantum kinetic theory for spin-1/2 particles: mean field theory

Starting from the Pauli Hamiltonian operator, we derive a scalar quantum kinetic equations for spin-1/2 systems. Here the regular Wigner two-state matrix is replaced by a scalar distribution function in extended phase space. Apart from being a formulation of principal interest, such scalar quantum kinetic equation makes the comparison to classical kinetic theory straightforward, and lends itself naturally to currently available numerical Vlasov and Boltzmann schemes. Moreover, while the quasi-distribution is a Wigner function in regular phase space, it is given by a Q-function in spin space. As such, nonlinear and dynamical quantum plasma problems are readily handled. Moreover, the issue of gauge invariance is treated. Applications (e.g. ultra-dense laser compressed targets and their diagnostics), possible extensions, and future improvements of the presented quantum statistical model are discussed.

Spin induced nonlinearities in the electron MHD regime

We consider the influence of the electron spin on the nonlinear propagation of whistler waves. For this purpose a recently developed electron two-fluid model, where the spin up- and down populations are treated as different fluids, is adapted to the electron MHD regime. We then derive a nonlinear Schrodinger equation for whistler waves, and compare the coefficients of nonlinearity with and without spin effects. The relative importance of spin effects depend on the plasma density and temperature as well as the external magnetic field strength and the wave frequency. The significance of our results to various plasmas are discussed.

A new electromagnetic wave in a pair plasma

A new nonlinear electromagnetic wave mode in a plasma is reported. Its existence depends on the interaction of an intense circularly polarized electromagnetic wave with a plasma, where quantum electrodynamical photon--photon scattering is taken into account. As an illustration, we consider a pair plasma and show that the new mode can be significant in astrophysical settings and in the next generation laser-plasma systems.

Cyclotron damping and Faraday rotation of gravitational waves

We study the propagation of gravitational waves in a collisionless plasma with an external magnetic field parallel to the direction of propagation. Due to resonant interaction with the plasma particles the gravitational wave experiences cyclotron damping or growth, the latter case being possible if the distribution function for any of the particle species deviates from thermodynamical equilibrium. Furthermore, we examine how the damping and dispersion depends on temperature and on the ratio between the cyclotron- and gravitational wave frequency. The presence of the magnetic field leads to different dispersion relations for different polarizations, which in turn imply Faraday rotation of gravitational waves.
