Search for galactic Pevatron candidates in a population of unidentified gamma-ray sources

Lower limits on the energy cutoff for unidentified gamma-ray sources detected in the HESS galactic plane survey are derived. Additional public data from the VERITAS, HESS and Milagro experiments are used for MGRO J1908+06 to confirm the limit derived from the HESS galactic plane survey data and to enable further conclusions on the presence of spectral breaks. Five Pevatron candidates are identified in the HESS galactic plane survey. The cutoff of the gamma-ray spectrum for these sources is larger than 20 TeV at 90% confidence level. The gamma-ray sources MGRO J1908+06 and HESS J1641-463, found to be Pevatron candidates in the analysis of the HESS galactic plane survey catalog, had been discussed as Pevatron candidates before. For MGRO J1908+06, the lower limit on the gamma-ray energy cutoff is 30 TeV at 90% confidence level. This is a factor of almost two larger than previous results. Additionally, a break in the gamma-ray spectrum at energies between 1 TeV and 10 TeV with an index change larger than 0.5 can be excluded at 90% confidence level for MGRO J1908+06. The energy cutoff of accelerated particles is larger than 100 TeV at 90% confidence level in a hadronic scenario for all five Pevatron candidates. A hadronic scenario is plausible for at least three of the Pevatron candidates, based on the presence of nearby molecular clouds and supernova remnants.

Significance in Gamma Ray Astronomy with Systematic Errors

The influence of systematic errors on the calculation of the statistical significance of a $γ$-ray signal with the frequently invoked Li and Ma method is investigated. A simple criterion is derived to decide whether the Li and Ma method can be applied in the presence of systematic errors. An alternative method is discussed for cases where systematic errors are too large for the application of the original Li and Ma method. This alternative method reduces to the Li and Ma method when systematic errors are negligible. Finally, it is shown that the consideration of systematic errors will be important in many analyses of data from the planned Cherenkov Telescope Array.

Strategies for the Detection of Gamma Rays from Dark Matter Annihilation Towards the Galactic Center Region with the High Energy Stereoscopic System

The central region of the dark matter halo of the Milky Way is a promising target for a search for a particle dark matter annihilation signal. The H.E.S.S. Collaboration has published a search for a photon flux originating from dark matter particles annihilating in the galactic center region. No significant excess was observed and upper limits on the velocity averaged dark matter self annihilation cross section were derived. The limits exclude the self annihilation of dark matter particles in the $\sim 1$ TeV to $\sim 4$ TeV mass range with a velocity averaged annihilation cross section larger than $\sim 3\cdot 10^{-25}\:\mathrm{cm^3/s}$, i.e. about one order of magnitude above the prediction for a thermal relic dark matter particle. A detailed and realistic Monte Carlo study of new strategies for the search for a particle dark matter annihilation signal from the Milky Way dark matter halo with the High Energy Stereoscopic System is presented and the sensitivity of different experimental approaches is compared.
