Averaging with a time-dependent perturbation parameter

Motivated by recent problems in mathematical cosmology, in which temporal averaging methods are applied in order to analyze the future asymptotics of models which exhibit oscillatory behavior, we provide a theorem concerning the large-time behavior for solutions of a general class of systems. We thus propose our result to be applicable to a wide range of problems in spatially homogenous cosmology with oscillatory behavior. Mathematically the theorem builds upon the standard theory of averaging in non-linear dynamical systems.

The dark mass signature in the orbit of S2

Aims. We explore a strategy for how the Schwarzschild and mass precessions can be separated from each other despite their secular interference, by pinpointing their signatures within a single orbit. From these insights, we then seek to assess the prospects for improving the dark mass constraints in the coming years. Methods. We analysed the dependence of the osculating orbital elements and of the observables on true anomaly, and we compared these functions for models with and without extended mass. We then translated the maximum astrometric impacts within one orbit to detection thresholds given hypothetical data of different accuracies. These theoretical investigations were then supported and complemented by an extensive mock-data fitting analysis. Results. We have four main results. 1. While the mass precession almost exclusively impacts the orbit in the apocentre half, the Schwarzschild precession almost exclusively impacts it in the pericentre half, allowing for a clear separation of the effects. 2. Data that are limited to the pericentre half are not sensitive to a dark mass, while data limited to the apocentre half are, but only to a limited extent. 3. A full orbit of data is required to substantially constrain a dark mass. 4. For a full orbit of astrometric and spectroscopic data, the astrometric component in the pericentre half plays the stronger role in constraining the dark mass than the astrometric data in the apocentre half. Furthermore, we determine the 1σ dark mass detection thresholds given different datasets on one full orbit. In particular, with a full orbit of data of 50 microarcseconds (VLTI/GRAVITY) and 10 km/s (VLT/SINFONI) precision, the 1σ bound would improve to about 1000 solar masses, for example.

On the oscillations and future asymptotics of locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi type III cosmologies with a massive scalar field

We analyse spatially homogenous cosmological models of locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi type III with a massive scalar field as matter model. Our main result concerns the future asymptotics of these spacetimes and gives the dominant time behaviour of the metric and the scalar field for all solutions for late times. This metric is forever expanding in all directions, however in one spatial direction only at a logarithmic rate, while at a power-law rate in the other two. Although the energy density goes to zero, it is matter dominated in the sense that the metric components differ qualitatively from the corresponding vacuum future asymptotics. Our results rely on a conjecture for which we give strong analytical and numerical support. For this we apply methods from the theory of averaging in nonlinear dynamical systems. This allows us to control the oscillations entering the system through the scalar field by the Klein-Gordon equation in a perturbative approach.

Dynamics of locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi type VIII cosmologies with anisotropic matter

This paper is a study of the effects of anisotropic matter sources on the qualitative evolution of spatially homogenous cosmologies of Bianchi type VIII. The analysis is based on a dynamical system approach and makes use of an anisotropic matter family developed by Calogero and Heinzle which generalises perfect fluids and provides a measure of deviation from isotropy. Thereby the role of perfect fluid solutions is put into a broader context. The results of this paper concern the past and future asymptotic dynamics of locally rotationally symmetric solutions of type VIII with anisotropic matter. It is shown that solutions whose matter source is sufficiently close to being isotropic exhibit the same qualitative dynamics as perfect fluid solutions. However a high degree of anisotropy of the matter model can cause dynamics to differ significantly from the vacuum and perfect fluid case.
