Cramer-Rao Bound for Angle of Arrival Estimates in True-Time-Delay Systems

In the context of joint communication and sensing JC&S, the challenge of obtaining accurate parameter estimates is of interest. Parameter estimates, such as the AoA can be utilized for solving the initial access problem, interference mitigation, localization of users or monitoring of the environment and synchronization of MIMO systems. Recently, TTD systems have gained attention for fast beam training during initial access and mitigation of beam squinting. This work derives the CRB for angle estimates in typical TTD systems. Properties of the CRB and the Fisher information are investigated and numerically evaluated. Finally, methods for angle estimation such as ML and established estimators are utilized to solve the angle estimation problem using a uniform linear array.

A Novel Approach for Cancellation of Non-Aligned Inter Spreading Factor Interference in LoRa Systems

Long Range (LoRa) has become a key enabler technology for low power wide area networks. However, due to its ALOHA-based medium access scheme, LoRa has to cope with collisions that limit the capacity and network scalability. Collisions between randomly overlapped signals modulated with different spreading factors (SFs) result in inter-SF interference, which increases the packet loss likelihood when signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) is low. This issue cannot be resolved by channel coding since the probability of error distance is not concentrated around the adjacent symbol. In this paper, we analytically model this interference, and propose an interference cancellation method based on the idea of segmentation of the received signal. This scheme has three steps. First, the SF of the interference signal is identified, then the equivalent data symbol and complex amplitude of the interference are estimated. Finally, the estimated interference signal is subtracted from the received signal before demodulation. Unlike conventional serial interference cancellation (SIC), this scheme can directly estimate and reconstruct the non-aligned inter-SF interference without synchronization. Simulation results show that the proposed method can significantly reduce the symbol error rate (SER) under low SIR compared with the conventional demodulation. Moreover, it also shows high robustness to fractional sample timing offset (STO) and carrier frequency offset (CFO) of interference. The presented results clearly show the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of the SER performance.

CNN aided Weighted Interpolation for Channel Estimation in Vehicular Communications

IEEE 802.11p standard defines wireless technology protocols that enable vehicular transportation and manage traffic efficiency. A major challenge in the development of this technology is ensuring communication reliability in highly dynamic vehicular environments, where the wireless communication channels are doubly selective, thus making channel estimation and tracking a relevant problem to investigate. In this paper, a novel deep learning (DL)-based weighted interpolation estimator is proposed to accurately estimate vehicular channels especially in high mobility scenarios. The proposed estimator is based on modifying the pilot allocation of the IEEE 802.11p standard so that more transmission data rates are achieved. Extensive numerical experiments demonstrate that the developed estimator significantly outperforms the recently proposed DL-based frame-by-frame estimators in different vehicular scenarios, while substantially reducing the overall computational complexity.

Context-Aware Security for 6G Wireless The Role of Physical Layer Security

Sixth generation systems are expected to face new security challenges, while opening up new frontiers towards context awareness in the wireless edge. The workhorse behind this projected technological leap will be a whole new set of sensing capabilities predicted for 6G devices, in addition to the ability to achieve high precision localization. The combination of these enhanced traits can give rise to a new breed of context-aware security protocols, following the quality of security (QoSec) paradigm. In this framework, physical layer security solutions emerge as competitive candidates for low complexity, low-delay and low-footprint, adaptive, flexible and context aware security schemes, leveraging the physical layer of the communications in genuinely cross-layer protocols, for the first time.

On the Acquisition of Stationary Signals Using Uniform ADCs

In this work, we consider the acquisition of stationary signals using uniform analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), i.e., employing uniform sampling and scalar uniform quantization. We jointly optimize the pre-sampling and reconstruction filters to minimize the time-averaged mean-squared error (TMSE) in recovering the continuous-time input signal for a fixed sampling rate and quantizer resolution and obtain closed-form expressions for the minimal achievable TMSE. We show that the TMSE-minimizing pre-sampling filter omits aliasing and discards weak frequency components to resolve the remaining ones with higher resolution when the rate budget is small. In our numerical study, we validate our results and show that sub-Nyquist sampling often minimizes the TMSE under tight rate budgets at the output of the ADC.

OFDM with Index Modulation in Orbital Angular Momentum Multiplexed Free Space Optical Links

Communication using orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes has recently received a considerable interest in free space optical (FSO) communications. Propagating OAM modes through free space may be subject to atmospheric turbulence (AT) distortions that cause signal attenuation and crosstalk which degrades the system capacity and increases the error probability. In this paper, we propose to enhance the OAM FSO communications in terms of bit error rate and spectral efficiency, for different levels of AT regimes. The performance gain is achieved by introducing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with index modulation technique to the OAM FSO system.

Unifying Message Passing Algorithms Under the Framework of Constrained Bethe Free Energy Minimization

Variational message passing (VMP), belief propagation (BP) and expectation propagation (EP) have found their wide applications in complex statistical signal processing problems. In addition to viewing them as a class of algorithms operating on graphical models, this paper unifies them under an optimization framework, namely, Bethe free energy minimization with differently and appropriately imposed constraints. This new perspective in terms of constraint manipulation can offer additional insights on the connection between different message passing algorithms and is valid for a generic statistical model. It also founds a theoretical framework to systematically derive message passing variants. Taking the sparse signal recovery (SSR) problem as an example, a low-complexity EP variant can be obtained by simple constraint reformulation, delivering better estimation performance with lower complexity than the standard EP algorithm. Furthermore, we can resort to the framework for the systematic derivation of hybrid message passing for complex inference tasks. Notably, a hybrid message passing algorithm is exemplarily derived for joint SSR and statistical model learning with near-optimal inference performance and scalable complexity.

In-phase and Quadrature Chirp Spread Spectrum for IoT Communications

This paper describes a coherent chirp spread spectrum (CSS) technique based on the Long-Range (LoRa) physical layer (PHY) framework. LoRa PHY employs CSS on top of a variant of frequency shift keying (FSK), and non-coherent detection is employed at the receiver for obtaining the transmitted data symbols. In this paper, we propose a scheme that encodes information bits on both in-phase and quadrature components of the chirp signal, and rather employs a coherent detector at the receiver. Hence, channel equalization is required for compensating the channel induced phase rotation on the transmit signal. Moreover, a simple channel estimation technique exploits the LoRa reference sequences used for synchronization to obtain the complex channel coefficient used in the equalizer. Performance evaluation using numerical simulation shows that the proposed scheme achieves approximately 1 dB gain in terms of energy efficiency, and it doubles the spectral efficiency when compared to the conventional LoRa PHY scheme. This is due to the fact that the coherent receiver is able to exploit the orthogonality between in-phase and quadrature components of the transmit signal.

Information Rates for Faster-Than-Nyquist Signaling with 1-Bit Quantization and Oversampling at the Receiver

Oversampling combined with low quantization resolutions has been shown to be a viable option when aiming for energy efficiency in multigigabit/s communications systems. This work considers the case of 1-bit quantization combined with oversampling and shows how the performance of such a system can be improved by using matched pulse shaping filters and faster than Nyquist signaling. The channel is considered with additive Gaussian noise and the performance of the system is evaluated in terms of achievable information rate under symbol-by-symbol detection.

Spectral Efficient Communications employing 1-Bit Quantization and Oversampling at the Receiver

To relax power consumption requirements in multigigabit/s communications systems low resolution quantization can be used. Information-theoretic results have shown that systems employing 1-bit quantization and oversampling are a viable option for this. This work investigates such a structure under the influence of additive Gaussian noise and two matched pulse shaping filters. It is described how a BCJR algorithm, based on a finite-state channel assumption, can be used to reconstruct symbols of higher order modulation schemes that allow the transmission of more than one bit per symbol. Furthermore, it is shown how symbol sources that are fitted to the 1-bit constraint can significantly improve the error rate performance of the system.

Two-Level Spatial Multiplexing using Hybrid Beamforming Antenna Arrays for mmWave Communications

In this work, we consider a two-level hierarchical MIMO antenna array system, where each antenna of the upper level is made up of a subarray on the lower one. The concept of spatial multiplexing is applied twice in this situation: Firstly, the spatial multiplexing of a Line-of-Sight (LoS) MIMO system is exploited. It is based on appropriate (sub-)array distances and achieves multiplexing gain due to phase differences among the signals at the receive (sub-)arrays. Secondly, one or more additional reflected paths of different angles (separated from the LoS path by different spatial beams at the subarrays) are used to exploit spatial multiplexing between paths. By exploiting the above two multiplexing kinds simultaneously, a high dimensional system with maximum spatial multiplexing is proposed by jointly using 'phase differences' within paths and 'angular differences' between paths. The system includes an advanced hybrid beamforming architecture with large subarray separation, which could occur in millimeter wave backhaul scenarios. The possible gains of the system w.r.t. a pure LOS MIMO system are illustrated by evaluating the capacities with total transmit power constraints.

Are Heterogeneous Cloud-Based Radio Access Networks Cost Effective?

Mobile networks of the future are predicted to be much denser than today's networks in order to cater to increasing user demands. In this context, cloud based radio access networks have garnered significant interest as a cost effective solution to the problem of coping with denser networks and providing higher data rates. However, to the best knowledge of the authors, a quantitative analysis of the cost of such networks is yet to be undertaken. This paper develops a theoretic framework that enables computation of the deployment cost of a network (modeled using various spatial point processes) to answer the question posed by the paper's title. Then, the framework obtained is used along with a complexity model, which enables computing the information processing costs of a network, to compare the deployment cost of a cloud based network against that of a traditional LTE network, and to analyze why they are more economical. Using this framework and an exemplary budget, this paper shows that cloud-based radio access networks require approximately 10 to 15% less capital expenditure per square kilometer than traditional LTE networks. It also demonstrates that the cost savings depend largely on the costs of base stations and the mix of backhaul technologies used to connect base stations with data centers.

Conjugate-Root Offset-QAM for Orthogonal Multicarrier Transmission

Current implementations of OFDM/OQAM are restricted to band-limited symmetric filters. To circumvent this, non-symmetric conjugate root (CR) filters are proposed for OQAM modulation. The system is applied to Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM) and a method for achieving transmit diversity with OQAM modulation is presented. The proposal reduces implementation complexity compared to existing works and provides a more regular phase space. GFDM/CR-OQAM outperforms conventional GFDM in terms of symbol error rate in fading multipath channels and provides a more localized spectrum compared to conventional OQAM.

GFDM - A Framework for Virtual PHY Services in 5G Networks

The next generation of wireless networks will face different challenges from new scenarios. The main contribution of this paper is to show that Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM), as a baseline of flexible circular filtered multicarrier systems, can be used as a framework to virtualize the PHY service for the upper layers of 5G networks. This framework opens the possibility to apply software-defined network principles to produce software-defined waveforms capable of addressing the requirements of future mobile networks. Hence, a block oriented concept will be used to provide the modulation service, emulating different flavors of waveforms designed to go beyond the well-established Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) principles, in scenarios where they perform best. The virtual physical layer (PHY) service opens the opportunity to have a fast and dynamic evolution of the infrastructure, as applications change over time. The presented unified modulation concept contributes with future research directions to address burst and continuous transmissions, referencing basic approaches for synchronization and advanced receiver design that can be exploited in future for the whole frame structure design and channel estimation strategies.

GFDM Transceiver using Precoded Data and Low-complexity Multiplication in Time Domain

Future wireless communication systems are demanding a more flexible physical layer. GFDM is a block filtered multicarrier modulation scheme proposed to add multiple degrees of freedom and cover other waveforms in a single framework. In this paper, GFDM modulation and demodulation will be presented as a frequency-domain circular convolution, allowing for a reduction of the implementation complexity when MF, ZF and MMSE filters are employed in the inner and outer receiver operation. Also, precoding is introduced to further increase GFDM flexibility, addressing a wider set of applications.

A low-complexity algorithm for calculation of the LMMSE filter coefficients for GFDM in a block-fading multipath environment is derived in this letter. The simplification is based on the block circularity of the involved matrices. The proposal reduces complexity from cubic to squared order. The proposed approach can be generalized to other waveforms with circular pulse shaping.

Distributed Asynchronous Optimization Framework for the MISO Interference Channel

We study the distributed optimization of transmit strategies in a multiple-input, single-output (MISO) interference channel (IFC). Existing distributed algorithms rely on stricly synchronized update steps by the individual users. They require a global synchronization mechanism and potentially suffer from the synchronization penalty caused by e.g., backhaul communication delays and fixed update sequences. We establish a general optimization framework that allows asynchronous update steps. The users perform their computations at arbitrary instants of time, and do not wait for information that has been sent to them. Based on certain bounds on the amount of asynchronism that is present in the execution of the algorithm, we are able to characterize its convergence. As illustrated by our numerical results, the proposed algorithm can alleviate communication overloads and is not excessively slowed down by neither communication delays, nor by differences in the computation intervals.

5GNOW: Challenging the LTE Design Paradigms of Orthogonality and Synchronicity

LTE and LTE-Advanced have been optimized to deliver high bandwidth pipes to wireless users. The transport mechanisms have been tailored to maximize single cell performance by enforcing strict synchronism and orthogonality within a single cell and within a single contiguous frequency band. Various emerging trends reveal major shortcomings of those design criteria: 1) The fraction of machine-type-communications (MTC) is growing fast. Transmissions of this kind are suffering from the bulky procedures necessary to ensure strict synchronism. 2) Collaborative schemes have been introduced to boost capacity and coverage (CoMP), and wireless networks are becoming more and more heterogeneous following the non-uniform distribution of users. Tremendous efforts must be spent to collect the gains and to manage such systems under the premise of strict synchronism and orthogonality. 3) The advent of the Digital Agenda and the introduction of carrier aggregation are forcing the transmission systems to deal with fragmented spectrum. 5GNOW is an European research project supported by the European Commission within FP7 ICT Call 8. It will question the design targets of LTE and LTE-Advanced having these shortcomings in mind and the obedience to strict synchronism and orthogonality will be challenged. It will develop new PHY and MAC layer concepts being better suited to meet the upcoming needs with respect to service variety and heterogeneous transmission setups. Wireless transmission networks following the outcomes of 5GNOW will be better suited to meet the manifoldness of services, device classes and transmission setups present in envisioned future scenarios like smart cities. The integration of systems relying heavily on MTC into the communication network will be eased. The per-user experience will be more uniform and satisfying. To ensure this 5GNOW will contribute to upcoming 5G standardization.

Framework for Link-Level Energy Efficiency Optimization with Informed Transmitter

The dramatic increase of network infrastructure comes at the cost of rapidly increasing energy consumption, which makes optimization of energy efficiency (EE) an important topic. Since EE is often modeled as the ratio of rate to power, we present a mathematical framework called fractional programming that provides insight into this class of optimization problems, as well as algorithms for computing the solution. The main idea is that the objective function is transformed to a weighted sum of rate and power. A generic problem formulation for systems dissipating transmit-independent circuit power in addition to transmit-dependent power is presented. We show that a broad class of EE maximization problems can be solved efficiently, provided the rate is a concave function of the transmit power. We elaborate examples of various system models including time-varying parallel channels. Rate functions with an arbitrary discrete modulation scheme are also treated. The examples considered lead to water-filling solutions, but these are different from the dual problems of power minimization under rate constraints and rate maximization under power constraints, respectively, because the constraints need not be active. We also demonstrate that if the solution to a rate maximization problem is known, it can be utilized to reduce the EE problem into a one-dimensional convex problem.

Application Driven Joint Uplink-Downlink Optimization in Wireless Communications

This paper introduces a new mathematical framework, which is used to derive joint uplink/downlink achievable rate regions for multi-user spatial multiplexing between one base station and multiple terminals. The framework consists of two models: the first one is a simple transmission model for uplink and downlink, which is capable to give a lower bound on the capacity for the case that the transmission is subject to imperfect CSI. A detailed model for concrete channel estimation and feedback schemes provides parameter input to the former model and covers the most important aspects such as pilot design optimization, linear channel estimation, feedback delay, and feedback quantization. We apply this framework to determine optimal pilot densities and CSI feedback quantity, given that a weighted sum of uplink and downlink throughput is to be maximized for a certain user velocity. We show that for low speed, and if downlink throughput is of particular importance, a significant portion of the uplink should be invested into CSI feedback. At higher velocity, however, downlink performance becomes mainly affected by CSI feedback delay, and hence CSI feedback brings little gain considering the inherent sacrifice of uplink capacity. We further show that for high velocities, it becomes beneficial to use no CSI feedback at all, but apply random beamforming in the downlink and operate in time-division duplex.

Protocols and Performance Limits for Half-Duplex Relay Networks

In this paper, protocols for the half-duplex relay channel are introduced and performance limits are analyzed. Relay nodes underly an orthogonality constraint, which prohibits simultaneous receiving and transmitting on the same time-frequency resource. Based upon this practical consideration, different protocols are discussed and evaluated using a Gaussian system model. For the considered scenarios compress-and-forward based protocols dominate for a wide range of parameters decode-and-forward protocols. In this paper, a protocol with one compress-and-forward and one decode-and-forward based relay is introduced. Just as the cut-set bound, which operates in a mode where relays transmit alternately, both relays support each other. Furthermore, it is shown that in practical systems a random channel access provides only marginal performance gains if any.

Uplink CoMP under a Constrained Backhaul and Imperfect Channel Knowledge

Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP) is known to be a key technology for next generation mobile communications systems, as it allows to overcome the burden of inter-cell interference. Especially in the uplink, it is likely that interference exploitation schemes will be used in the near future, as they can be used with legacy terminals and require no or little changes in standardization. Major drawbacks, however, are the extent of additional backhaul infrastructure needed, and the sensitivity to imperfect channel knowledge. This paper jointly addresses both issues in a new framework incorporating a multitude of proposed theoretical uplink CoMP concepts, which are then put into perspective with practical CoMP algorithms. This comprehensive analysis provides new insight into the potential usage of uplink CoMP in next generation wireless communications systems.
