Disordered Mott-Hubbard Physics in Nanoparticle Solids: Persistent Gap Across the Disorder-localized-to-Mott-localized Transition

We show that Nanoparticle (NP) solids are an exciting platform to seek new insights into the disordered Mott-Hubbard physics. We developed a "Hierarchical Nanoparticle Transport Simulator" (HINTS), which builds from localized states to describe the Disorder-localized and Mott-localized phases, and the transitions out of these localized phases. We also studied the interplay between correlations and disorder in the corresponding multi-orbital Hubbard model at and away from integer filling by Dynamical Mean Field Theory. This approach is complementary to HINTS, as it builds from the metallic phase of the NP solid. The mobility scenarios and phase diagrams produced by the two methods are strikingly similar, and account for the mobilities measured in NP solids.

Charge avalanches and depinning in the Coulomb glass: The role of long-range interactions

We explore the stability of far-from-equilibrium metastable states of a three-dimensional Coulomb glass at zero temperature by studying charge avalanches triggered by a slowly varying external electric field. Surprisingly, we identify a sharply defined dynamical ("depinning") phase transition from stationary to nonstationary charge displacement at a critical value of the external electric field. Using particle-conserving dynamics, scale-free system-spanning avalanches are observed only at the critical field. We show that the qualitative features of this depinning transition are completely different for an equivalent short-range model, highlighting the key importance of long-range interactions for nonequilibrium dynamics of Coulomb glasses.

Quantitative Decoding of Interactions in Tunable Nanomagnet Arrays Using First Order Reversal Curves

To develop a full understanding of interactions in nanomagnet arrays is a persistent challenge, critically impacting their technological acceptance. This paper reports the experimental, numerical and analytical investigation of interactions in arrays of Co nanoellipses using the first-order reversal curve (FORC) technique. A mean-field analysis has revealed the physical mechanisms giving rise to all of the observed features: a shift of the non-interacting FORC-ridge at the low-H$_c$ end off the local coercivity H$_c$ axis; a stretch of the FORC-ridge at the high-H$_c$ end without shifting it off the H$_c$ axis; and a formation of a tilted edge connected to the ridge at the low-H$_c$ end. Changing from flat to Gaussian coercivity distribution produces a negative feature, bends the ridge, and broadens the edge. Finally, nearest neighbor interactions segment the FORC-ridge. These results demonstrate that the FORC approach provides a comprehensive framework to qualitatively and quantitatively decode interactions in nanomagnet arrays.

Self-Organized Criticality in Glassy Spin Systems Requires a Diverging Number of Neighbors

We investigate the conditions required for general spin systems with frustration and disorder to display self-organized criticality, a property which so far has been established only for the fully-connected infinite-range Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Ising spin-glass model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 1034 (1999)]. Here we study both avalanche and magnetization jump distributions triggered by an external magnetic field, as well as internal field distributions in the short-range Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass for various space dimensions between 2 and 8, as well as the fixed-connectivity mean-field Viana-Bray model. Our numerical results, obtained on systems of unprecedented size, demonstrate that self-organized criticality is recovered only in the strict limit of a diverging number of neighbors, and is not a generic property of spin-glass models in finite space dimensions.

The Phase Diagram of Disordered Vortices from London Langevin Simulations

We study the phase diagram of vortex matter in disordered type-II superconductors. We performed numerical simulations in the London Langevin approximation, using a new realistic representation of the disorder. At low magnetic fields we find a disentangled and dislocation free Bragg-glass regime. Increasing the field introduces disorder-driven entanglement in a discontinuous manner, leading to a vortex-glass phase, which subsequently melts into the vortex liquid. The obtained phase boundaries are in quantitative agreement with the experimental data.

Theory for Quantum Spin and Vortex Glasses

We develop a theory for the quantum vortex glass, with both the coupling strengths and the site energies disordered. This model is closely related to XY spin glasses and bosons in random media. For properly chosen distributions of the site disorder the phase diagram consists of a superfluid phase, and Weak and Strong Glass regions, dominated by long range and local fluctuations, respectively. The most direct experimental manifestation of the Strong Glass transition is the lack of divergence of the corresponding non-linear susceptibility.
