Emergent non-Hermitian contributions to the Ehrenfest and Hellmann-Feynman theorems

We point out that two of the most important theorems of Quantum Mechanics, the Ehrenfest theorem and the Hellmann-Feynman theorem, lack in their standard form important information: there are cases where non-Hermitian boundary contributions emerge. These contributions actually appear naturally, in order for the above theorems to be valid and applicable (i.e. in multiply-connected spaces), and this occurs for physical quantities that are not represented by well-defined self-adjoint operators (such as the position operator in a periodic potential, or in general Aharonov-Bohm configurations, either in real or in an arbitrary parameter-space, in the sense of Berry's adiabatic and cyclic procedures). In this short note, we report modifications of these two theorems when such non-Hermiticities appear, and we demonstrate how they resolve certain Quantum Mechanical paradoxes (most of them having been noticed in the past as violations of the so-called Hypervirial theorem in Quantum Chemistry). This resolution of paradoxes (essentially the re-establishment of applicability of the Ehrenfest theorem even in multiply-connected spaces) always proceeds through the appearance of certain generalized currents, in a theoretical picture with interesting structure (where a generalized continuity equation with a sink term shows up naturally).

Ground State thermodynamic and response properties of electron gas in a strong magnetic and electric field: Exact analytical solutions for a conventional semiconductor and for Graphene

Consequences of an exceedingly strong electric field (E field) on the ground state energetics and transport properties of a 2D spinless electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field (a Quantum Hall Effect (QHE) configuration) are investigated to all orders in the fields. For a conventional semiconductor, we find fractional values of the Hall conductivity and some magnetoelectric coefficients for certain values of E and B fields that do not result from interactions or impurities, but are a pure consequence of a strong enough in-plane E field. We also determine analytically the ground state energy, and response properties such as magnetization and polarization as functions of the electromagnetic field in the strong E field limit. In the case of Graphene, we obtain more complex behaviors leading to the possibility of irrational Hall values. The results are also qualitatively discussed in connection to various mechanisms for the QHE-breakdown.

Thickness-induced violation of de Haas-van Alphen effect through exact analytical solutions at a one-electron and a one-Composite Fermion level

A systematic study of the energetics of electrons in an interface in a magnetic field is reported with exact analytical calculations based on a Landau Level (LL) picture, by serious consideration of the finite thickness of the Quantum Well (QW). The approach is physically transparent and subtly different in its line of reasoning from standard methods avoiding any semi-classical approximation. We find "internal" phase transitions (at partial LL filling) for magnetisation and susceptibility that are not captured by other approaches and that give rise to nontrivial violations of the standard de Haas-van Alphen periods, in a manner that reproduces the exact quantal astrophysical behaviours in the limit of full three-dimensional (3D) space. Upon inclusion of Zeeman splitting, additional features are also found, such as global energy minima originating from the interplay of QW, Zeeman and LL Physics, while a corresponding calculation in a Composite Fermion picture with Λ-Levels, leads to new predictions on magnetic properties of an interacting electron liquid. By pursuing the same line of reasoning for a topologically nontrivial system with a relativistic spectrum, we find evidence that similar effects might be operative in the dimensionality crossover of 3D strong topological insulators to 2D topological insulator quantum wells.

Landau Level Physics in a Quantum Well: new singular features in magnetization and violations of de Haas - van Alphen periodicities

Analytical calculations based on a Landau Level (LL) picture are reported for an interface (with a finite-width Quantum Well (QW)) and for a fully three-dimensional charged quantum electronic system in an external magnetic field. They lead to a sequence of previously unnoticed singular features in global magnetization and magnetic susceptibility that lead to nontrivial corrections to the standard de Haas - van Alphen periods. Additional features due to Zeeman splitting are also reported (such as new energy minima that originate from the interplay of QW, Zeeman and LL Physics) that are possibly useful for the design of quantum devices. A corresponding calculation in a Composite Fermion picture leads to new predictions on magnetic response properties of a fully-interacting electron liquid in a finite-width interface.

Some Exactly-Solvable Quantum Problems and their Applications to Hetero- and Nano-Structures with Nontrivial Topology

Analytical calculations based on a Landau Level (LL) picture are reported for a many-electron system moving in an interface (with a finite-width Quantum Well (QW)) and in the presence of an external perpendicular magnetic field. They lead to a sequence of previously unnoticed singular features in global magnetization and magnetic susceptibility that give rise to nontrivial corrections to the standard de Haas-van Alphen periods. Additional features due to Zeeman splitting are also reported (such as new energy minima that originate from the interplay of QW, Zeeman and LL Physics). A corresponding calculation in a Composite Fermion picture leads to new predictions on magnetic response properties of a fully-interacting electron liquid in a finite-width interface. Exact solutions for the energetics of a fully three-dimensional system of many noninteracting electrons in a magnetic field are also presented (a system mostly discussed in astrophysical applications), with Hurwitz zeta functions playing an important role on thermodynamic properties. Finally, exact solutions for the energetics of an electron gas on a cylindrical surface (and in the presence of an Aharonov-Bohm flux threading the cylinder) are presented, in two cases: when the radius R of the cylinder is microscopically small and the length of the cylinder is macrocopically large (an electron gas nanotube), and vice versa. Inclusion in the above systems of a radial magnetic field and also of Zeeman splitting gives rise to curvature-induced spin-orbit coupling, that leads to interesting behaviors that can also be dealt with analytically. A corresponding SU(2) formulation and a number of diagonalization results for the energy of such curved systems have, in the limit of vanishing curvature, the correct behaviors (namely, the standard spin-Physics in flat space, that is decoupled from the standard orbital-Physics of Landau Levels).
