Hybrid inflation and waterfall field in string theory from D7-branes

We present an explicit string realisation of a cosmological inflationary scenario we proposed recently within the framework of type IIB flux compactifications in the presence of three magnetised D7-brane stacks. Inflation takes place around a metastable de Sitter vacuum. The inflaton is identified with the volume modulus and has a potential with a very shallow minimum near the maximum. Inflation ends due to the presence of "waterfall" fields that drive the evolution of the Universe from a nearby saddle point towards a global minimum with tuneable vacuum energy describing the present state of our Universe.

Smooth Hybrid Inflation with Low Reheat Temperature and Observable Gravity Waves in $SU(5) \times U(1)_χ$ Super-GUT

We realize smooth hybrid inflation in the framework of supersymmetric $SU(5) \times U(1)_χ\subset SO(10)$ model which provides a natural solution to the monopole problem appearing in the spontaneous symmetry breaking of $SU(5)$. The breaking of $U(1)_χ$ symmetry leaves a residual discrete $Z_2$ symmetry, that serves as the MSSM matter parity, realizing the possibility of the lightest supersymmetric particle as a cold dark matter candidate. The $d = 5$ proton lifetime for the decay $p \rightarrow K^+ \barν$, mediated by color-triplet Higgsinos is found to satisfy current experimental bounds if split-high scale SUSY scenario is employed. We show that with minimal Kähler potential, the soft supersymmetry breaking terms play a vital rôle in bringing the scalar spectral index $n_s$ within the Planck's latest bounds. In a minimal Kähler potential setup, small values of tensor-to-scalar ratio $r \lesssim 3.5 \times 10^{-7}$ are obtained, whereas the gravitino mass turns out to be in the range that favors PeV scale SUSY but is not sufficiently high to avoid the $d = 5$ proton decay. A non-minimal Kähler potential including higher-order corrections is required to realize successful inflation with central value of scalar spectral index $n_s = 0.9655$, large tensor modes $r \lesssim 0.056$ and a low reheat temperature $(3\times 10^{6} \lesssim T_r \lesssim 6.5 \times 10^7 )$ GeV consistent with leptogenesis and baryogenesis.

Stabilising all Kähler moduli in perturbative LVS

In this work we investigate the moduli stabilisation problem and the requirements for de Sitter vacua within the framework of type IIB string theory. Using perturbative effects arising from the various sources such as $α^\prime$ corrections, logarithmic as well as KK and winding-type string-loop corrections along with the higher derivative $F^4$-contributions, we present a moduli stabilisation scheme in which the overall volume is realised at exponentially large values such that $\langle {\cal V} \rangle \simeq e^{a/g_s^2}$ in the weak coupling regime, where $a$ is a parameter given as $a = \frac{ζ[3]}{2 ζ[2]} \simeq 0.365381$. We also present a concrete global construction using a $K3$-fibred CY threefold with $h^{1,1} =3$ which shares many of its properties with those of the standard toroidal case, and subsequently generates the appropriate corrections needed to fix all the three Kähler moduli at the perturbative level. We further discuss whether de Sitter vacua can be ensured through appropriate contributions of uplifting terms in the effective potential.

Low Scale String Theory Benchmarks for Hidden Photon Dark Matter Interpretations of the XENON1T Anomaly

An excess of low-energy electronic recoil events over known backgrounds was recently observed in the XENON1T detector, where $285$ events are observed compared to an expected $232 \pm 15$ events from the background-only fit to the data in the energy range 1-7 keV. This could be due to the beta decay of an unexpected tritium component, or possibly to new physics. One plausible new physics explanation for the excess is absorption of hidden photon dark matter relics with mass around $2.8$ keV and kinetic mixing of about $10^{-15}$, which can also explain cooling excesses in horizontal-branch (HB) stars. Such small gauge boson masses and couplings can naturally arise from type-IIB low scale string theory. We provide a fit of the XENON1T excess in terms of a minimal low scale type-IIB string theory parameter space and present some benchmark points which provide a good fit to the data. It is also demonstrated how the required transformation properties of the massless spectrum are obtained in intersecting D-brane models.

Logarithmic loop corrections, moduli stabilisation and de Sitter vacua in string theory

We study string loop corrections to the gravity kinetic terms in type IIB compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds or their orbifold limits, in the presence of $D7$-branes and orientifold planes. We show that they exhibit in general a logarithmic behaviour in the large volume limit transverse to the $D7$-branes, induced by a localised four-dimensional Einstein-Hilbert action that appears at a lower order in the closed string sector, found in the past. Here, we compute the coefficient of the logarithmic corrections and use them to provide an explicit realisation of a mechanism for Kähler moduli stabilisation that we have proposed recently, which does not rely on non-perturbative effects and lead to de Sitter vacua. Our result avoids no-go theorems of perturbative stabilisation due to runaway potentials, in a way similar to the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, and provides a counter example to one of the swampland conjectures concerning de Sitter vacua in quantum gravity, once string loop effects are taken into account; it thus paves the way for embedding the Standard Model of particle physics and cosmology in string theory.

750 GeV Diphoton excess from $E_6$ in F-theory GUTs

We interpret the 750-760 GeV diphoton resonance as one or more of the spinless components of a singlet superfield arising from the three 27-dimensional representations of $E_6$ in F-theory, which also contain three copies of colour-triplet charge $\mp 1/3$ vector-like fermions $D_i,\bar{D}_i$ and inert Higgs doublets to which the singlets may couple. For definiteness we consider (without change) a model that was proposed some time ago which contains such states, as well as bulk exotics, leading to gauge coupling unification. The smoking gun prediction of the model is the existence of other similar spinless resonances, possibly close in mass to 750-760 GeV, decaying into diphotons, as well as the three families of vector-like fermions $D_i,\bar{D}_i$.

Diphoton Resonance in F-theory inspired Flipped SO(10)

Motivated by the diphoton excess at 750 GeV reported by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, we present an F-theory inspired flipped $SO(10)$ model embedded in an $E_6$ GUT. The low energy spectrum includes the three MSSM chiral families, vectorlike color triplets, several pairs of charged $SU(2)_L$ singlet fields $(E^c, \bar E^c)$, as well as MSSM singlets, one or more of which can contribute to the resonance. Total decay width in the multi-GeV range can arise from couplings involving the singlet and MSSM fields

Masses of Third Family Vector-like Quarks and Leptons in Yukawa-Unified $E_6$

In supersymmetric $E_6$ the masses of the third family quarks and charged lepton, $t-b-τ$, as well as the masses of the vector-like quarks and leptons, $D-\bar{D}$ and $ L-\bar{L}$, may arise from the coupling $27_3$ x $27_3$ x $27_H$, where $27_3$ and $27_H$ denote the third family matter and Higgs multiplets respectively. We assume that the SO(10) singlet component in $27_H$ acquires a TeV scale VEV which spontaneously breaks U(1)$_ψ$ and provides masses to the vector-like particles in $27_3$, while the MSSM doublets in $27_H$ provide masses to $ t, b$ and $τ$. Imposing Yukawa coupling unification $h_t=h_b=h_τ=h_D=h_L$ at $M_{GUT}$ and employing the ATLAS and CMS constraints on the $Z'_ψ$ boson mass, we estimate the lower bounds on the third family vector-like particles $D-\bar{D}$ and $L-\bar{L}$ masses to be around 5.85 TeV and 2.9 TeV respectively. These bounds apply in the supersymmetric limit.

Non-Minimal Quartic Inflation in Supersymmetric SO(10)

We describe how quartic ($λϕ^4$) inflation with non-minimal coupling to gravity is realized in realistic supersymmetric $SO(10)$ models. In a well-motivated example the $16-\overline{16}$ Higgs multiplets, which break $SO(10)$ to $SU(5)$ and yield masses for the right-handed neutrinos, provide the inflaton field $ϕ$. Thus, leptogenesis is a natural outcome in this class of $SO(10)$ models. Moreover, the adjoint (45-plet) Higgs also acquires a GUT scale value during inflation so that the monopole problem is evaded. The scalar spectral index $n_s$ is in good agreement with the observations and $r$, the tensor to scalar ratio, is predicted for realistic values of GUT parameters to be of order $10^{-3}-10^{-2}$.

R-Parity violation in F-Theory

We discuss R-parity violation (RPV) in semi-local and local F-theory constructions. We first present a detailed analysis of all possible combinations of RPV operators arising from semi-local F-theory spectral cover constructions, assuming an $SU(5)$ GUT. We provide a classification of all possible allowed combinations of RPV operators originating from operators of the form $10\cdot \bar 5\cdot \bar 5$, including the effect of $U(1)$ fluxes with global restrictions. We then relax the global constraints and perform explicit computations of the bottom/tau and RPV Yukawa couplings, at an $SO(12)$ local point of enhancement in the presence of general fluxes subject only to local flux restrictions. We compare our results to the experimental limits on each allowed RPV operator, and show that operators such as $LLe^c$, $LQd^c$ and $u^cd^cd^c$ may be present separately within current bounds, possibly on the edge of observability, suggesting lepton number violation or neutron-antineutron oscillations could constrain F-theory models.

MSSM from F-theory SU(5) with Klein Monodromy

We revisit a class of $SU(5)$ SUSY GUT models which arise in the context of the spectral cover with Klein Group monodromy $V_4=Z_2\times Z_2$. We show that $Z_2$ matter parities can be realised via new geometric symmetries respected by the spectral cover. We discuss a particular example of this kind, where the low energy effective theory below the GUT scale is just the MSSM with no exotics and standard matter parity, extended by the seesaw mechanism with two right-handed neutrinos.

Phenomenological implications of a minimal F-theory GUT with discrete symmetry

We discuss the origin of both non-Abelian discrete family symmetry and Abelian continuous family symmetry, as well as matter parity, from F-theory SUSY GUTs. We propose a minimal model based on the smallest GUT group $SU(5)$, together with the non-Abelian family symmetry $D_4$ plus an Abelian family symmetry, where fluxes are responsible for doublet-triplet splitting, leading to a realistic low energy spectrum with phenomenologically acceptable quark and lepton masses and mixing. We show how a $Z_2$ matter parity emerging from F-theory can suppress proton decay while allowing neutron-antineutron oscillations, providing a distinctive signature of the set-up.

The origin of discrete symmetries in F-theory models

While non-abelian groups are undoubtedly the cornerstone of Grand Unified Theories (GUTs), phenomenology shows that the role of abelian and discrete symmetries is equally important in model building. The latter are the appropriate tool to suppress undesired proton decay operators and various flavour violating interactions, to generate a hierarchical fermion mass spectrum, etc. In F-theory, GUT symmetries are linked to the singularities of the elliptically fibred K3 manifolds; they are of ADE type and have been extensively discussed in recent literature. In this context, abelian and discrete symmetries usually arise either as a subgroup of the non-abelian symmetry or from a non-trivial Mordell-Weil group associated to rational sections of the elliptic fibration. In this note we give a short overview of the current status and focus in models with rank-one Mordell-Weil group.

Discrete Family Symmetry from F-Theory GUTs

We consider realistic F-theory GUT models based on discrete family symmetries $A_4$ and $S_3$, combined with $SU(5)$ GUT, comparing our results to existing field theory models based on these groups. We provide an explicit calculation to support the emergence of the family symmetry from the discrete monodromies arising in F-theory. We work within the spectral cover picture where in the present context the discrete symmetries are associated to monodromies among the roots of a five degree polynomial and hence constitute a subgroup of the $S_5$ permutation symmetry. We focus on the cases of $A_4$ and $S_3$ subgroups, motivated by successful phenomenological models interpreting the fermion mass hierarchy and in particular the neutrino data. More precisely, we study the implications on the effective field theories by analysing the relevant discriminants and the topological properties of the polynomial coefficients, while we propose a discrete version of the doublet-triplet splitting mechanism.

Gauge Coupling Unification in E6 F-Theory GUTs with Matter and Bulk Exotics from Flux Breaking

We consider gauge coupling unification in E6 F-Theory Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) where E6 is broken to the Standard Model (SM) gauge group using fluxes. In such models there are two types of exotics that can affect gauge coupling unification, namely matter exotics from the matter curves in the 27 dimensional representation of E6 and the bulk exotics from the adjoint 78 dimensional representation of E6. We explore the conditions required for either the complete or partial removal of bulk exotics from the low energy spectrum. In the latter case we shall show that (miraculously) gauge coupling unification may be possible even if there are bulk exotics at the TeV scale. Indeed in some cases it is necessary for bulk exotics to survive to the TeV scale in order to cancel the effects coming from other TeV scale matter exotics which would by themselves spoil gauge coupling unification. The combination of matter and bulk exotics in these cases can lead to precise gauge coupling unification which would not be possible with either type of exotics considered by themselves. The combination of matter and bulk exotics at the TeV scale represents a unique and striking signature of E6 F-theory GUTs that can be tested at the LHC.

SU(5) D-brane realizations, Yukawa couplings and proton stability

We discuss SU(5) Grand Unified Theories in the context of orientifold compactifications. Specifically, we investigate two and three D-brane stack realizations of the Georgi-Glashow and the flipped SU(5) model and analyze them with respect to their Yukawa couplings. As pointed out in arXiv:0909.0271 the most economical Georgi-Glashow realization based on two stacks generically suffers from a disastrous large proton decay rate. We show that allowing for an additional U(1) D-brane stack this as well as other phenomenological problems can be resolved. We exemplify with globally consistent Georgi-Glashow models based on RCFT that these D-brane quivers can be indeed embedded in a global setting. These globally consistent realizations admit rigid O(1) instantons inducing the perturbatively missing coupling 10105^H. Finally we show that flipped SU(5) D-brane realizations even with multiple U(1) D-brane stacks are plagued by severe phenomenological drawbacks which generically cannot be overcome.

Towards a Realistic F-theory GUT

We consider semi-local F-theory GUTs arising from a single E_8 point of local enhancement, leading to simple GUT groups based on E_6, SO(10) and SU(5) with SU(3), SU(4) and SU(5) spectral covers, respectively. Assuming the minimal Z_2 monodromy, we determine the homology classes and the associated spectra after flux breaking for each case. Our analysis includes the GUT singlets which have hitherto been ignored but which play a crucial role in phenomenology. Using these results we construct an E_6 based model that demonstrates, for the first time, that it is possible to construct a phenomenologically viable model which leads to the MSSM at low energies. The exotics that result from flux breaking all get a large mass when singlet fields acquire vacuum expectation values driven by D- and F-flatness. Due to the underlying GUT symmetry and the U(1)s descending from E_8, bare baryon- and lepton-number violating terms are forbidden up to and including dimension 5. As a result nucleon decay is naturally suppressed below present bounds. The mu-term is forbidden by the U(1) but is generated at the SUSY breaking scale when a further singlet field acquires a TeV scale vacuum expectation value, driven by the spontaneous breaking of the electroweak symmetry. After including the effect of flux and instanton corrections acceptable quark and charged lepton masses and mixing angles can be obtained. Neutrinos get a mass from the see-saw mechanism through their coupling to singlet neutrinos that acquire large Majorana mass as a result of the monodromy.
