Brill--Noether loci on moduli spaces of symplectic bundles over curves

The symplectic Brill--Noether locus ${\mathcal S}_{2n, K}^k$ associated to a curve $C$ parametrises stable rank $2n$ bundles over $C$ with at least $k$ sections and which carry a nondegenerate skewsymmetric bilinear form with values in the canonical bundle. This is a symmetric determinantal variety whose tangent spaces are defined by a symmetrised Petri map. We obtain upper bounds on the dimensions of various components of ${\mathcal S}_{2n, K}^k$. We show the nonemptiness of several ${\mathcal S}_{2n, K}^k$, and in most of these cases also the existence of a component which is generically smooth and of the expected dimension. As an application, for certain values of $n$ and $k$ we exhibit components of excess dimension of the standard Brill--Noether locus $B^k_{2n, 2n(g-1)}$ over any curve of genus $g \ge 122$. We obtain similar results for moduli spaces of coherent systems.

Irreducibility of Lagrangian Quot schemes over an algebraic curve

Let $C$ be a complex projective smooth curve and $W$ a symplectic vector bundle of rank $2n$ over $C$. The Lagrangian Quot scheme $LQ_{-e}(W)$ parameterizes subsheaves of rank $n$ and degree $-e$ which are isotropic with respect to the symplectic form. We prove that $LQ_{-e}(W)$ is irreducible and generically smooth of the expected dimension for all large $e$, and that a generic element is saturated and stable.

Isotropic Quot schemes of orthogonal bundles over a curve

We study the isotropic Quot schemes $IQ_e (V)$ parameterizing degree $e$ isotropic subsheaves of maximal rank of an orthogonal bundle $V$ over a curve. The scheme $IQ_e (V)$ contains a compactification of the space $IQ^o_e (V)$ of degree $e$ maximal isotropic subbundles, but behaves quite differently from the classical Quot scheme, and the Lagrangian Quot scheme in [6]. We observe that for certain topological types of $V$, the scheme $IQ_e (V)$ is empty for all $e$. In the remaining cases, for infinitely many $e$ there are irreducible components of $IQ_e (V)$ consisting entirely of nonsaturated subsheaves, and so $IQ_e (V)$ is strictly larger than the closure of $IQ^o_e (V)$. As our main result, we prove that for any orthogonal bundle $V$ and for $e \ll 0$, the closure $\overline{IQ^o_e (V)}$ of $IQ^o_e (V)$ is either empty or consists of one or two irreducible connected components, depending on $°(V)$ and $e$. In so doing, we also characterize the nonsaturated part of $\overline{IQ^o_e (V)}$ when $V$ has even rank.

A Riemann--Kempf singularity theorem for higher rank Brill--Noether loci

Given a vector bundle $V$ over a curve $X$, we define and study a surjective rational map $\mathrm{Hilb}^d (\mathbb{P} V ) - \mathrm{Quot}^{0, d} ( V^* )$ generalising the natural map $\mathrm{Sym}^d X \to \mathrm{Quot}^{0, d} ({\mathcal O}_X)$. We then give a generalisation of the geometric Riemann--Roch theorem to vector bundles of higher rank over $X$. We use this to give a geometric description of the tangent cone to the Brill--Noether locus $B^r_{r, d}$ at a suitable bundle $E$ with $h^0 (E) = r+n$. This gives a generalisation of the Riemann--Kempf singularity theorem. As a corollary, we show that the $n$th secant variety of the rank one locus of $\mathbb{P} \mathrm{End} E$ is contained in the tangent cone.

Non-defectivity of Grassmannian bundles over a curve

Let Gr(2, E) be the Grassmann bundle of two-planes associated to a general bundle E over a curve X. We prove that an embedding of Gr(2, E) by a certain twist of the relative Plücker map is not secant defective. This yields a new and more geometric proof of the Hirschowitz-type bound on the Lagrangian Segre invariant for orthogonal bundles over X, analogous to those given for vector bundles and symplectic bundles in [2, 3]. From the non-defectivity we also deduce an interesting feature of a general orthogonal bundle over X, contrasting with the classical and symplectic cases: Any maximal Lagrangian subbundle intersects at least one other maximal Lagrangian subbundle in positive rank.

Stable rank three vector bundles without theta divisors over bielliptic curves

Raynaud has shown that over a general curve of genus $g \ge 2$, every semistable bundle of rank three and integral slope admits a theta divisor. We show that this can fail for special curves: Over any bielliptic curve of genus $g \ge 5$, we construct a stable rank three bundle of trivial determinant with no theta divisor. This gives a partial answer to a question of Beauville.

Lagrangian subbundles of orthogonal bundles of odd rank over an algebraic curve

An orthogonal bundle over a curve has an isotropic Segre invariant determined by the maximal degree of a Lagrangian subbundle. This invariant, and the induced stratifications on moduli spaces of orthogonal bundles, were studied for bundles of even rank in [4]. In this paper, we obtain analogous results for bundles of odd rank. We obtain a sharp upper bound on the isotropic Segre invariant. We show the irreducibility of the induced strata on the moduli spaces of orthogonal bundles of odd rank, and compute their dimensions. As a key ingredient of the proofs, we study the correspondence between Lagrangian subbundles of orthogonal bundles of even and odd rank.

Geometry of vector bundle extensions and applications to a generalised theta divisor

Let E and F be vector bundles over a complex projective smooth curve X, and suppose that 0 -> E -> W -> F -> 0 is a nontrivial extension. Let G be a subbundle of F, and D an effective divisor on X. We give a criterion for the subsheaf G(-D) \subset F to lift to W, in terms of the geometry of a scroll in the extension space \PP H^1 (X, Hom(F, E)). We use this criterion to describe the tangent cone to the generalised theta divisor on the moduli space of semistable bundles of rank r and slope g-1 over X, at a stable point. This gives a generalisation of a case of the Riemann-Kempf singularity theorem for line bundles over X. In the same vein, we generalise the geometric Riemann-Roch theorem to vector bundles of slope g-1 and arbitrary rank.

Theta divisors of stable vector bundles may be nonreduced

A generic strictly semistable bundle of degree zero over a curve X has a reducible theta divisor, given by the sum of the theta divisors of the stable summands of the associated graded bundle. The converse is not true: Beauville and Raynaud have each constructed stable bundles with reducible theta divisors. For X of genus at least 5, we construct stable vector bundles over X of rank $r$ for all $r \geq 5$, with reducible and nonreduced theta divisors. We also adapt the construction to symplectic bundles. In the appendix, Raynaud's original example of a stable rank 2 vector bundle with reducible theta divisor over a bi-elliptic curve of genus 3 is generalized to bi-elliptic curves of genus $g \geq 3$.

A stratification on the moduli spaces of symplectic and orthogonal bundles over a curve

A symplectic or orthogonal bundle $V$ of rank $2n$ over a curve has an invariant $t(V)$ which measures the maximal degree of its isotropic subbundles of rank $n$. This invariant $t$ defines stratifications on moduli spaces of symplectic and orthogonal bundles. We study this stratification by relating it to another one given by secant varieties in certain extension spaces. We give a sharp upper bound on $t(V)$, which generalizes the classical Nagata bound for ruled surfaces and the Hirschowitz bound for vector bundles, and study the structure of the stratifications on the moduli spaces. In particular, we compute the dimension of each stratum. We give a geometric interpretation of the number of maximal Lagrangian subbundles of a general symplectic bundle, when this is finite. We also observe some interesting features of orthogonal bundles which do not arise for symplectic bundles, essentially due to the richer topological structure of the moduli space in the orthogonal case.

Lagrangian subbundles of symplectic bundles over a curve

A symplectic bundle over an algebraic curve has a natural invariant $\sLag$ determined by the maximal degree of its Lagrangian subbundles. This can be viewed as a generalization of the classical Segre invariants of a vector bundle. We give a sharp upper bound on $\sLag$ which is analogous to the Hirschowitz bound on the classical Segre invariants. Furthermore, we study the stratifications induced by $\sLag$ on moduli spaces of symplectic bundles, and get a full picture for the case of rank four.
