Neutrino mass constraints on $μ$-decay and $π^0\to ν\barν$

In this letter, we show that upper-limits on neutrino mass translate into upper-limits on the class of neutrino-matter interactions that can generate loop corrections to the neutrino mass matrix. We apply our results to $μ$- and $π$-decays and derive model-independent limits on six of the ten parameters used to parametrize contributions to $μ$-decay that do not belong to the standard model. These upper-limits provide improved constraints on the five Michel parameters, $ρ,ξ^\prime,ξ^{\prime\prime},α,α^\prime$, that exceed PDG constraints by at least one order of magnitude. For $π^0\to ν\barν$ we find for the branching ratio: $B(π^0\toν\barν) < 10^{-10}$.

Light neutrino and heavy particle exchange in $\nbb$-decay

A simple and precise method is presented to compare contributions to neutrinoless double-beta decay ($\nbb$-decay) from heavy particle exchange and light Majorana neutrino exchange. This procedure makes no assumptions about the momentum transfer between the two nucleons involved in the $\nbb$-decay process. It is shown that for a general particle physics model, the characteristic $\nbb$-decay scale $> 4.4$ TeV when all the coupling constants are assumed to be natural and of ${\cal{O}}(1)$.

Neutrinoless double-beta decay and effective field theory

We analyze neutrinoless double $β$-decay ($\nbb$-decay) mediated by heavy particles from the standpoint of effective field theory. We show how symmetries of the $\nbb$-decay quark operators arising in a given particle physics model determine the form of the corresponding effective, hadronic operators. We classify the latter according to their symmetry transformation properties as well as the order at which they appear in a derivative expansion. We apply this framework to several particle physics models, including R-parity violating supersymmetry (RPV SUSY) and the left-right symmetric model (LRSM) with mixing and a right-handed Majorana neutrino. We show that, in general, the pion exchange contributions to $\nbb$-decay dominate over the short-range four-nucleon operators. This confirms previously published RPV SUSY results and allows us to derive new constraints on the masses in the LRSM. In particular, we show how a non-zero mixing angle $ζ$ in the left-right symmetry model produces a new potentially dominant contribution to $\nbb$-decay that substantially modifies previous limits on the masses of the right-handed neutrino and boson stemming from constraints from $\nbb$-decay and vacuum stability requirements.

New contribution to WIMP-nucleus scattering

A weakly-interacting massive particle (WIMP) is perhaps the most promising candidate for the dark matter in the Galactic halo. The WIMP detection rate in laboratory searches is fixed by the cross section for elastic WIMP-nucleus scattering. Here we calculate the contribution to this cross section from two-nucleon currents from pion exchange in the nucleus, and show that it may in some cases be comparable to the one-nucleon current that has been considered in prior work, and perhaps help resolve the discrepancies between the various direct dark-matter search experiments. We provide simple expressions that allow these new contributions to be included in current calculations.

One loop corrections to quantum hadrodynamics with vector mesons

The renormalized elastic $ππ$ scattering amplitude to one loop is calculated in the chiral limit in the $σ$ model and in a Quantum Hadrodynamic model (QHD-III) with vector mesons. It is argued that QHD-III reduces to the linear $σ$ model in the limit that the vector meson masses become large. The pion decay constant is also calculated to 1-loop in the $σ$ model, and at tree level in QHD-III; it is shown that the coefficient of the tree level term in the scattering amplitude equals $F_π^{-2}$. The 1-loop correction of $F_π$ in QHD-III violates strong isospin current conservation. Thus,it is concluded that QHD-III can, at best, only describe the strongly interacting nuclear sector.
