Formation of the SDC13 Hub-Filament System: A Cloud-Cloud Collision Imprinted on The Multiscale Magnetic Field

Hub-filament systems (HFSs) are potential sites of protocluster and massive star formation, and play a key role in mass accumulation. We report JCMT POL-2 850 $μ$m polarization observations toward the massive HFS SDC13. We detect an organized magnetic field near the hub center with a cloud-scale "U-shape" morphology following the western edge of the hub. Together with larger-scale APEX 13CO and PLANCK polarization data, we find that SDC13 is located at the convergent point of three giant molecular clouds (GMCs) along a large-scale, partially spiral-like magnetic field. The smaller "U-shape" magnetic field is perpendicular to the large-scale magnetic field and the converging GMCs. We explain this as the result of a cloud-cloud collision. Within SDC13, we find that local gravity and velocity gradients point toward filament ridges and hub center. This suggests that gas can locally be pulled onto filaments and overall converges to the hub center. A virial analysis of the central hub shows that gravity dominates magnetic and kinematic energy. Combining large- and small-scale analyses, we propose that SDC13 is initially formed from a collision of clouds moving along the large-scale magnetic field. In the post-shock regions, after the initial turbulent energy has dissipated, gravity takes over and starts to drive the gas accretion along the filaments toward the hub center.

Nobeyama Survey of Inward Motions toward Cores in Orion Identified by SCUBA-2

In this study, 36 cores (30 starless and 6 protostellar) identified in Orion were surveyed to search for inward motions. We used the Nobeyama 45 m radio telescope, and mapped the cores in the $J = 1\rightarrow0$ transitions of HCO$^+$, H$^{13}$CO$^+$, N$_2$H$^+$, HNC, and HN$^{13}$C. The asymmetry parameter $δV$, which was the ratio of the difference between the HCO$^+$ and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ peak velocities to the H$^{13}$CO$^+$ line width, was biased toward negative values, suggesting that inward motions were more dominant than outward motions. Three starless cores (10% of all starless cores surveyed) were identified as cores with blue-skewed line profiles (asymmetric profiles with more intense blue-shifted emission), and another two starless cores (7%) were identified as candidate blue-skewed line profiles. The peak velocity difference between HCO$^+$ and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ of them was up to 0.9 km s$^{-1}$, suggesting that some inward motions exceeded the speed of sound for the quiescent gas ($\sim10-17$ K). The mean of $δV$ of the five aforementioned starless cores was derived to be $-$0.5$\pm$0.3. One core, G211.16$-$19.33North3, observed using the ALMA ACA in DCO$^+$ $J = 3\rightarrow2$ exhibited blue-skewed features. Velocity offset in the blue-skewed line profile with a dip in the DCO$^+$ $J = 3\rightarrow2$ line was larger ($\sim 0.5$ km s$^{-1}$) than that in HCO$^+$ $J = 1\rightarrow0$ ($\sim 0.2$ km s$^{-1}$), which may represent gravitational acceleration of inward motions. It seems that this core is at the last stage in the starless phase, judging from the chemical evolution factor version 2.0 (CEF2.0).

The Distribution of UV Radiation Field in the Molecular Clouds of Gould Belt

The distribution of ultraviolet (UV) radiation field provides critical constraints on the physical environments of molecular clouds. Within 1 kpc of our solar system and fostering protostars of different masses, the giant molecular clouds in the Gould Belt present an excellent opportunity to resolve the UV field structure in star forming regions. We performed spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting of the archival data from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey (HGBS). Dust radiative transfer analysis with the DUSTY code were applied to 23 regions in 14 molecular complexes of the Gould Belt, resulting in the spatial distribution of radiation field in these regions. For 10 of 15 regions with independent measurements of star formation rate, their star formation rate and UV radiation intensity largely conform to a linear correlation found in previous studies.

Classification of Planetary Nebulae through Deep Transfer Learning

This study investigate the effectiveness of using Deep Learning (DL) for the classification of planetary nebulae (PNe). It focusses on distinguishing PNe from other types of objects, as well as their morphological classification. We adopted the deep transfer learning approach using three ImageNet pre-trained algorithms. This study was conducted using images from the Hong Kong/Australian Astronomical Observatory/Strasbourg Observatory H-alpha Planetary Nebula research platform database (HASH DB) and the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS). We found that the algorithm has high success in distinguishing True PNe from other types of objects even without any parameter tuning. The Matthews correlation coefficient is 0.9. Our analysis shows that DenseNet201 is the most effective DL algorithm. For the morphological classification, we found for three classes, Bipolar, Elliptical and Round, half of objects are correctly classified. Further improvement may require more data and/or training. We discuss the trade-offs and potential avenues for future work and conclude that deep transfer learning can be utilized to classify wide-field astronomical images.

Molecular Cloud Cores with High Deuterium Fractions: Nobeyama Mapping Survey

We present the results of on-the-fly mapping observations of 44 fields containing 107 SCUBA-2 cores in the emission lines of molecules, N$_2$H$^+$, HC$_3$N, and CCS at 82$-$94 GHz using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. This study aimed at investigating the physical properties of cores that show high deuterium fractions and might be close to the onset of star formation. We found that the distributions of the N$_2$H$^+$ and HC$_3$N line emissions are approximately similar to that of 850-$μ$m dust continuum emission, whereas the CCS line emission is often undetected or is distributed in a clumpy structure surrounding the peak position of the 850-$μ$m dust continuum emission. Occasionally (12%), we observe the CCS emission which is an early-type gas tracer toward the young stellar object, probably due to local high excitation. Evolution toward star formation does not immediately affect nonthermal velocity dispersion.

Studying Infall in Infrared Dark Clouds with Multiple HCO+ Transitions

We investigate the infall properties in a sample of 11 infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) showing blue-asymmetry signatures in HCO$^{+}$ J=1--0 line profiles. We used JCMT to conduct mapping observations in HCO$^{+}$ J=4--3 as well as single-pointing observations in HCO$^{+}$ J =3--2, towards 23 clumps in these IRDCs. We applied the HILL model to fit these observations and derived infall velocities in the range of 0.5-2.7 km s$^{-1}$, with a median value of 1.0 km s$^{-1}$, and obtained mass accretion rates of 0.5-14$\times$10$^{-3}$ Msun yr$^{-1}$. These values are comparable to those found in massive star forming clumps in later evolutionary stages. These IRDC clumps are more likely to form star clusters. HCO$^{+}$ J =3--2 and HCO$^{+}$ J =1--0 were shown to trace infall signatures well in these IRDCs with comparable inferred properties. HCO$^{+}$ J=4--3, on the other hand, exhibits infall signatures only in a few very massive clumps, due to smaller opacties. No obvious correlation for these clumps was found between infall velocity and the NH3/CCS ratio.

The Physical Properties of the SVS 13 Protobinary System: Two Circumstellar Disks and a Spiraling Circumbinary Disk in the Making

We present VLA and ALMA observations of the close (0.3" = 90 au separation) protobinary system SVS 13. We detect two small circumstellar disks (radii $\sim$12 and $\sim$9 au in dust, and $\sim$30 au in gas) with masses of $\sim$0.004-0.009 $M_{sun}$ for VLA 4A (the western component) and $\sim$0.009-0.030 $M_{sun}$ for VLA 4B (the eastern component). A circumbinary disk with prominent spiral arms extending $\sim$500 au and a mass of $\sim$0.052 $M_{sun}$ appears to be in the earliest stages of formation. The dust emission is more compact and with a very high optical depth toward VLA 4B, while toward VLA 4A the dust column density is lower, allowing the detection of stronger molecular transitions. We infer rotational temperatures of $\sim$140 K, on scales of $\sim$30 au, across the whole source, and a rich chemistry. Molecular transitions typical of hot corinos are detected toward both protostars, being stronger toward VLA 4A, with several ethylene glycol transitions detected only toward this source. There are clear velocity gradients, that we interpret in terms of infall plus rotation of the circumbinary disk, and purely rotation of the circumstellar disk of VLA 4A. We measured orbital proper motions and determined a total stellar mass of 1 $M_{sun}$. From the molecular kinematics we infer the geometry and orientation of the system, and stellar masses of $\sim$0.26 $M_{sun}$ for VLA 4A and $\sim$0.60 $M_{sun}$ for VLA 4B.

The TMRT K Band Observations towards 26 Infrared Dark Clouds: NH$_{3}$, CCS, and HC$_{3}$N

We present one of the first Shanghai Tian Ma Radio Telescope (TMRT) K Band observations towards a sample of 26 infrared dark clouds (IRDCs). We observed the (1,1), (2,2), (3,3), and (4,4) transitions of NH$_{3}$ together with CCS (2$_{1}$-1$_{0}$) and HC$_{3}$N $J\,$=2-1, simultaneously. The survey dramatically increases the existing CCS-detected IRDC sample from 8 to 23, enabling a better statistical study of the ratios of carbon-chain molecules (CCM) to N-bearing molecules in IRDCs. With the newly developed hyperfine group ratio (HFGR) method of fitting NH$_{3}$ inversion lines, we found the gas temperature to be between 10 and 18 K. The column density ratios of CCS to NH$_{3}$ for most of the IRDCs are less than 10$^{-2}$, distinguishing IRDCs from low-mass star-forming regions. We carried out chemical evolution simulations based on a three-phase chemical model NAUTILUS. Our measurements of the column density ratios between CCM and NH$_{3}$ are consistent with chemical evolutionary ages of $\lesssim$10$^{5}$ yr in the models. Comparisons of the data and chemical models suggest that CCS, HC$_{3}$N, and NH$_{3}$ are sensitive to the chemical evolutionary stages of the sources.

ALMA ACA and Nobeyama observations of two Orion cores in deuterated molecular lines

We mapped two molecular cloud cores in the Orion A cloud with the ALMA ACA 7-m Array and with the Nobeyama 45-m radio telescope. These cores have bright N$_2$D$^+$ emission in single-pointing observations with the Nobeyama 45-m radio telescope, have relatively high deuterium fraction, and are thought to be close to the onset of star formation. One is a star-forming core, and the other is starless. These cores are located along filaments observed in N$_2$H$^+$, and show narrow linewidths of 0.41 km s$^{-1}$ and 0.45 km s$^{-1}$ in N$_2$D$^+$, respectively, with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. Both cores were detected with the ALMA ACA 7m Array in the continuum and molecular lines at Band 6. The starless core G211 shows clumpy structure with several sub-cores, which in turn show chemical differences. Also, the sub-cores in G211 have internal motions that are almost purely thermal. The starless sub-core G211D, in particular, shows a hint of the inverse P Cygni profile, suggesting infall motion. The star-forming core G210 shows an interesting spatial feature of two N$_2$D$^+$ peaks of similar intensity and radial velocity located symmetrically with respect to the single dust continuum peak. One interpretation is that the two N$_2$D$^+$ peaks represent an edge-on pseudo-disk. The CO outflow lobes, however, are not directed perpendicular to the line connecting both N$_2$D$^+$ peaks.

Molecular Cloud Cores with High Deuterium Fraction: Nobeyama Single-Pointing Survey

We present the results of a single-pointing survey of 207 dense cores embedded in Planck Galactic Cold Clumps distributed in five different environments ($λ$ Orionis, Orion A, B, Galactic plane, and high latitudes) to identify dense cores on the verge of star formation for the study of the initial conditions of star formation. We observed these cores in eight molecular lines at 76-94 GHz using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. We find that early-type molecules (e.g., CCS) have low detection rates and that late-type molecules (e.g., N$_2$H$^+$, c-C$_3$H$_2$) and deuterated molecules (e.g., N$_2$D$^+$, DNC) have high detection rates, suggesting that most of the cores are chemically evolved. The deuterium fraction (D/H) is found to decrease with increasing distance, indicating that it suffers from differential beam dilution between the D/H pair of lines for distant cores ($>$1 kpc). For $λ$ Orionis, Orion A, and B located at similar distances, D/H is not significantly different, suggesting that there is no systematic difference in the observed chemical properties among these three regions. We identify at least eight high D/H cores in the Orion region and two at high latitudes, which are most likely to be close to the onset of star formation. There is no clear evidence of the evolutionary change in turbulence during the starless phase, suggesting that the dissipation of turbulence is not a major mechanism for the beginning of star formation as judged from observations with a beam size of 0.04 pc.

Rotation of Two Micron All Sky Survey Clumps in Molecular Clouds

We have analyzed the rotational properties of 12 clumps using $^{13}$CO (1--0) and C$^{18}$O (1--0) maps of the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory 13.7 m radio telescope. The clumps, located within molecular clouds, have radii ($R$) in the range of 0.06 -- 0.27\,pc. The direction of clump elongation is not correlated with the direction of the velocity gradient. We measured the specific angular momentum (J/M) to be between 0.0022 and 0.025 pc\,km\,s$^{-1}$ based on $^{13}$CO images, and between 0.0025 and 0.021 pc\,km\,s$^{-1}$ based on C$^{18}$O images. The consistency of $J/M$ based on different tracers indicates the $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O in dense clumps trace essentially the same material despite significantly different opacities. We also found that $J/M$ increases monotonically as a function of $R$ in power--law form, $J/M~\propto~R^{1.58~\pm~0.11}$. The ratio between rotation energy and gravitational energy, $β$, ranges from 0.0012 to 0.018. The small values of $β$ imply that rotation alone is not sufficient to support the clump against gravitational collapse.

Star formation in infrared dark clouds: Self-gravity and dynamics

The role played by gravity in the transfer of interstellar matter from molecular cloud scales to protostellar scales is still highly debated. Only detailed studies on the kinematics of large samples of star-forming clouds will settle the issue. We present new IRAM 30m observations of a sample of 27 infrared dark clouds covering a large range of sizes, masses, and aspect ratios. Preliminary results suggest that gravity is regulating the dynamical evolution of these clouds on a couple of parsec scales.

A molecular line survey of a sample of AGB stars and planetary nebulae

A millimeter molecular line survey of three carbon-rich AGB stars and two oxygen-rich planetary nebulae has been carried out over the frequency range 80.5-115.5 GHz. Sixty eight different transitions were detected in the data from 27 different molecular species. The hyperfine structure of C2H and C13CH has been fitted to constrain the optical depth of their transitions. All other transitions have been constrained on the basis of their line profile shapes. Rotation temperatures and column densities have been calculated for all possible species, with adaptations to the methods applied in order to account for the hyperfine structure of various transitions. From the column densities, carbon, silicon and sulphur isotopic ratios have been determined. The results corroborate IRAS 15194-5115 as a J-type star, whilst excluding IRAS 15082-4808 and IRAS 07454-7112 as such.

Deuteration in infrared dark clouds

Much of the dense gas in molecular clouds has a filamentary structure but the detailed structure and evolution of this gas is poorly known. We have observed 54 cores in infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) using N$_2$H$^+$ (1-0) and (3-2) to determine the kinematics of the densest material, where stars will form. We also observed N$_2$D$^+$ (3-2) towards 29 of the brightest peaks to analyse the level of deuteration which is an excellent probe of the quiescent of the early stages of star formation. There were 13 detections of N$_2$D$^+$ (3-2). This is one of the largest samples of IRDCs yet observed in these species. The deuteration ratio in these sources ranges between 0.003 and 0.14. For most of the sources the material traced by N$_2$D$^+$ and N$_2$H$^+$ (3-2) still has significant turbulent motions, however three objects show subthermal N$_2$D$^+$ velocity dispersion. Surprisingly the presence or absence of an embedded 70 $μ$m source shows no correlation with the detection of N$_2$D$^+$ (3-2), nor does it correlate with any change in velocity dispersion or excitation temperature. Comparison with recent models of deuteration suggest evolutionary time-scales of these regions of several free-fall times or less.

On the nature of star-forming filaments: II. Sub-filaments and velocities

We show that hydrodynamic turbulent cloud simulations naturally produce large filaments made up of a network of smaller and coherent sub-filaments. Such simulations resemble observations of filaments and fibres in nearby molecular clouds. The sub-filaments are dynamical features formed at the stagnation points of the turbulent velocity field where shocks dissipate the turbulent energy. They are a ubiquitous feature of the simulated clouds, which appear from the beginning of the simulation and are not formed by gradual fragmentation of larger filaments. Most of the sub-filaments are gravitationally sub-critical and do not fragment into cores, however, there is also a significant fraction of supercritical sub-filaments which break up into star-forming cores. The sub-filaments are coherent along their length, and the residual velocities along their spine show that they are subsonically contracting without any ordered rotation on scales of ~0.1 pc. Accretion flows along the sub-filaments can feed material into star forming cores embedded within the network. The overall mass in sub-filaments and the number of sub-filaments increases as the cloud evolves. We propose that the formation of filaments and sub-filaments is a natural consequence of the turbulent cascade in the complex multi-phase interstellar medium. Sub-filaments are formed by the high wavenumber, small scale modes in the turbulent velocity field. These are then stretched by local shear motions and gathered together by a combination of low wavenumber modes and gravitational contraction on larger scales, and by doing so build up the extended filaments observed in column density maps.

The Three-mm Ultimate Mopra Milky Way Survey. I. Survey Overview, Initial Data Releases, and First Results

We describe a new mm-wave molecular-line mapping survey of the southern Galactic Plane and its first data releases. The Three-mm Ultimate Mopra Milky Way Survey (ThrUMMS) maps a 60°x2° sector of our Galaxy's fourth quadrant, using a combination of fast mapping techniques with the Mopra radio telescope, simultaneously in the J=1-0 lines of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, and CN near 112 GHz at ~arcminute and ~0.3 km s$^{-1}$ resolution, with ~2 K channel$^{-1}$ sensitivity for $^{12}$CO and ~1 K channel$^{-1}$ for the other transitions. The calibrated data cubes from these observations are made available to the community after processing through our pipeline. Here, we describe the motivation for ThrUMMS, the development of new observing techniques for Mopra, and how these techniques were optimised to the objectives of the survey. We showcase some sample data products and describe the first science results on CO-isotopologue line ratios. These vary dramatically across the Galactic Plane, indicating a very wide range of optical depth and excitation conditions, from warm and translucent to cold and opaque. The population of cold clouds in particular have optical depths for $^{12}$CO easily exceeding 100. We derive a new, nonlinear conversion law from $^{12}$CO integrated intensity to column density, which suggests that the molecular mass traced by CO in the Galactic disk may have been substantially underestimated. This further suggests that some global relationships in disk galaxies, such as star formation laws, may need to be recalibrated. The large ThrUMMS team is proceeding with several other science investigations.

The Three-mm Ultimate Mopra Milky Way Survey. II. Cloud and Star Formation Near the Filamentary Ministarburst RCW 106

We report here a study of gas, dust and star formation rates (SFRs) in the molecular cloud complexes (MCCs) surrounding the giant H$\,{\rm \scriptsize{II}}$ region RCW$\,$106 using $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO$\,$(1-0) data from the Three-mm Ultimate Mopra Milky way Survey (ThrUMMS) and archival data. We separate the emission in the Galactic Plane around $l=330^{\circ}$-$335^{\circ}$ and $b=-1^{\circ}$-$1^{\circ}$ into two main MCCs: the RCW$\,$106 (V$_{\rm LSR} = -48\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$) complex and the MCC331-90(V$_{\rm LSR} = -90\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$) complex. While RCW$\,$106 (M$\sim 5.9\times 10^{6}\,$M$_{\odot}$) is located in the Scutum-Centaurus arm at a distance of 3.6$\,$kpc, MCC331-90 (M$\sim 2.8\times 10^{6}\,$M$_{\odot}$) is in the Norma arm at a distance of 5$\,$kpc. Their molecular gas mass surface densities are $\sim220$ and $\sim130\,$M$_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$, respectively. For RCW$\,$106 complex, using the 21$\,$cm continuum fluxes and dense clump counting, we obtain an immediate past ($\sim$-0.2$\,$Myr) and an immediate future ($\sim$+0.2$\,$Myr) SFRs of $0.25_{-0.023}^{+0.09}\,$M$_{\odot},{\rm yr}^{-1}$ and $0.12\pm0.1 \,$M$_{\odot}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$. This results in an immediate past SFR density of $9.5_{-0.9}^{+3.4}\,$M$_{\odot}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}\,{\rm kpc}^{-2}$ and an immediate future SFR density of $4.8_{-3.8}^{+3.8}\,$M$_{\odot}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}\,{\rm kpc}^{-2}$. As both SFRs in this cloud are higher than the ministarburst threshold, they must be undergoing a ministarburst event although burst peak has already passed. We conclude that this is one of the most active star forming complexes in the southern sky, ideal for further investigations of massive star formation and potentially shedding light on the physics of high-redshift starbursts.

The pros and cons of the inversion method approach to derive 3D dust emission properties of the ISM: the Hi-GAL field centred on (l,b)=(30$^{\circ}$,0$^{\circ}$)

Herschel FIR continuum data obtained as part of the Hi-GAL survey have been used, together with the GLIMPSE 8 $μ$m and MIPSGAL 24 $μ$m data, to attempt the first 3D-decomposition of dust emission associated with atomic, molecular and ionized gas at 15 arcmin angular resolution. Our initial test case is a 2$\times$2 square degrees region centred on (l,b)=(30$^{\circ}$,0$^{\circ}$), a direction that encompasses the origin point of the Scutum-Crux Arm at the tip of the Galactic Bar. Coupling the IR maps with velocity maps specific for different gas phases (HI 21cm, $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO, and RRLs), we estimate the properties of dust blended with each of the gas components and at different Galactocentric distances along the LOS. A statistical Pearson's coefficients analysis is used to study the correlation between the column densities and the intensity of the IR emission. This analysis provides evidence that the 2$\times$2 square degree field under consideration is characterized by the presence of a gas component not accounted for by the standard tracers, possibly associated with warm H$_{2}$ and cold HI. We demonstrate that the IR radiation in the range 8 $μ$m $<$ $λ$ $<$ 500 $μ$m is systematically dominated by emission originating within the Scutum-Crux Arm. By applying an inversion method, we recover the dust emissivities associated with atomic, molecular and ionized gas. Using the DustEM model we obtain an indication for PAHs depletion in the diffuse ionized gas. However, the main goal of this work is to discuss the impact of the missing column density associated with the dark gas component on the accurate evaluation of the dust properties, and to shed light on the limitations of the inversion method approach when this is applied to a small section of the Galactic Plane and when the working resolution allows sufficient de-blending of the gas components along the LOS.

Methanol and excited OH masers towards W51: I - Main and South

MERLIN phase-referenced polarimetric observations towards the W51 complex were carried out in March 2006 in the Class II methanol maser transition at 6.668 GHz and three of the four excited OH maser hyperfine transitions at 6 GHz. Methanol maser emission is found towards both W51 Main and South. We did not detect any emission in the excited OH maser lines at 6.030 and 6.049 GHz down to a 3 sigma limit of ~20 mJy per beam. Excited OH maser emission at 6.035 GHz is only found towards W51 Main. This emission is highly circularly polarised (typically 45% and up to 87%). Seven Zeeman pairs were identified in this transition, one of which contains detectable linear polarisation. The magnetic field strength derived from these Zeeman pairs ranges from +1.6 to +6.8 mG, consistent with the previously published magnetic field strengths inferred from the OH ground-state lines. The bulk of the methanol maser emission is associated with W51 Main, sampling a total area of ~3"x2.2" (i.e., ~16200x11900 AU), while only two maser components, separated by ~2.5", are found in the W51 South region. The astrometric distributions of both 6.668-GHz methanol and 6.035-GHz excited-OH maser emission in the W51 Main/South region are presented here. The methanol masers in W51 Main show a clear coherent velocity and spatial structure with the bulk of the maser components distributed into 2 regions showing a similar conical opening angle with of a central velocity of ~+55.5 km/s and an expansion velocity of =<5 km/s. The mass contained in this structure is estimated to be at least 22 solar masses. The location of maser emission in the two afore-mentioned lines is compared with that of previously published OH ground-state emission. Association with the UCHII regions in the W51 Main/South complex and relationship of the masers to infall or outflow in the region are discussed.

The first ALMA view of IRAS 16293-2422: Direct detection of infall onto source B and high-resolution kinematics of source A

Aims: We focus on the kinematical properties of a proto-binary to study the infall and rotation of gas towards its two protostellar components. Methods: We present ALMA Science Verification observations with high-spectral resolution of IRAS 16293-2422 at 220.2 GHz. The wealth of molecular lines in this source and the very high spectral resolution offered by ALMA allow us to study the gas kinematics with unprecedented detail. Results: We present the first detection of an inverse P-Cygni profile towards source B in the three brightest lines. The line profiles are fitted with a simple two-layer model to derive an infall rate of 4.5x10^-5 Msun/yr. This infall detection would rule-out the previously suggested possibility that source B is a T Tauri star. A position velocity diagram for source A shows evidence for rotation with an axis close to the line-of-sight.

The Millimeter Astronomy Legacy Team 90 GHz (MALT90) Pilot Survey

We describe a pilot survey conducted with the Mopra 22-m radio telescope in preparation for the Millimeter Astronomy Legacy Team Survey at 90 GHz (MALT90). We present a summary of the data and describe how the results of the pilot survey shaped the design of the larger MALT90 survey. We motivate our selection of target sources for the main survey based on the pilot detection rates and demonstrate the value of mapping in multiple lines simultaneously at high spectral resolution.

Chemical stratification in the Orion Bar: JCMT Spectral Legacy Survey observations

Photon-dominated regions (PDRs) are expected to show a layered structure in molecular abundances and emerging line emission, which is sensitive to the physical structure of the region as well as the UV radiation illuminating it. We aim to study this layering in the Orion Bar, a prototypical nearby PDR with a favorable edge-on geometry. We present new maps of 2 by 2 arcminute fields at 14-23 arcsecond resolution toward the Orion Bar in the SO 8_8-9_9, H2CO 5_(1,5)-4_(1,4), 13CO 3-2, C2H 4_(9/2)-3_(7/2) and 4_(7/2)-3_(5/2), C18O 2-1 and HCN 3-2 transitions. The data reveal a clear chemical stratification pattern. The C2H emission peaks close to the ionization front, followed by H2CO and SO, while C18O, HCN and 13CO peak deeper into the cloud. A simple PDR model reproduces the observed stratification, although the SO emission is predicted to peak much deeper into the cloud than observed while H2CO is predicted to peak closer to the ionization front than observed. In addition, the predicted SO abundance is higher than observed while the H2CO abundance is lower than observed. The discrepancies between the models and observations indicate that more sophisticated models, including production of H2CO through grain surface chemistry, are needed to quantitatively match the observations of this region.

The Connection between Submillimeter Continuum Flux and Binary Separation in Young Binaries: Evidence of Interaction between Stars and Disks

We present 800 micron continuum photometry of pre-main-sequence binary stars with projected separations a_p < 150 AU in the Sco-Oph star-forming region. Combining our observations with published 1300 micron photometry, we find that binaries in Sco-Oph with 1 < a_p < 50--100 AU have lower submillimeter fluxes than wider binaries or single stars, as previously found for Taurus- Auriga binaries. The wide binaries and single stars have indistinguishable submillimeter flux distributions. Thus, binary companions with separations less than 50--100 AU significantly influence the nature of associated disks. We have explored the hypothesis that the reduction in submillimeter flux is the result of gaps cleared in disks by companions. Gap clearing produces the qualitative dependence of submillimeter flux on binary separation, and a simple model suggests that large gaps in disks with surface densities typical of wide-binary or single-star disks can reduce submillimeter fluxes to levels consistent with the observed limits. This model shows that the present submillimeter flux upper limits do not necessarily imply a large reduction in disk surface densities. Two-thirds of the young binaries were detected by IRAS, showing that most binaries have circumstellar disks. These fluxes place lower limits of 10^{-5} M_sun on circumstellar disk masses. The submillimeter fluxes place upper limits of 0.005 M_sun on circumbinary disk masses. Thus massive circumbinary disks are rare among binaries with separations between a few AU and 100 AU. Circumbinary disks are found around some close binaries.
