Dependence of Chemical Abundance on the Cosmic Ray Ionization Rate in IC 348

Ions (e.g., H3+_3^+, H2_2O+^+) have been used extensively to quantify the cosmic-ray ionization rate (CRIR) in diffuse sightlines. However, measurements of CRIR in low-to-intermediate density gas environments are rare, especially when background stars are absent. In this work, we combine molecular line observations of CO, OH, CH, and HCO+^+ in the star-forming cloud IC~348, and chemical models to constrain the value of CRIR and study the response of the chemical abundances distribution. The cloud boundary is found to have an AVA_{\rm V} of approximately 4 mag. From the interior to the exterior of the cloud, the observed 13^{13}CO line intensities drop by an order of magnitude. The calculated average abundance of 12^{12}CO (assuming 12^{12}C/13^{13}C = 65) is (1.2±\pm0.9) ×\times10−4^{-4}, which increases by a factor of 6 from the interior to the outside regions. The average abundance of CH (3.3±\pm0.7 ×\times 10−8^{-8}) is in good agreement with previous findings in diffuse and translucent clouds (AVA_{\rm V} << 5 mag). However, we did not find a decline in CH abundance in regions of high extinction (AV≃A_{\rm V}\simeq8 mag) as previously reported in Taurus. By comparing the observed molecular abundances and chemical models, we find a decreasing trend of CRIR as AVA_{\rm V} increases. The inferred CRIR of ζcrζ_{cr} = (4.7±\pm1.5) ×\times 10−16^{-16} s−1^{-1} at low AVA_{\rm V} is consistent with H3+^+_3 measurements toward two nearby massive stars.

The role of neutral hydrogen in setting the abundances of molecular species in the Milky Way's diffuse interstellar medium. I. Observational constraints from ALMA and NOEMA

We have complemented existing observations of HI absorption with new observations of HCO+^+, C2_2H, HCN, and HNC absorption from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) in the direction of 20 background radio continuum sources with 4∘≤∣b∣≤81∘4^\circ \leq |b| \leq 81^\circ to constrain the atomic gas conditions that are suitable for the formation of diffuse molecular gas. We find that these molecular species form along sightlines where AV≳0.25A_V \gtrsim 0.25, consistent with the threshold for the HI-to-H2_2 transition at solar metallicity. Moreover, we find that molecular gas is associated only with structures that have an HI optical depth >0.1> 0.1, a spin temperature <80< 80 K, and a turbulent Mach number ≳2\gtrsim 2. We also identify a broad, faint component to the HCO+^+ absorption in a majority of sightlines. Compared to the velocities where strong, narrow HCO+^+ absorption is observed, the HI at these velocities has a lower cold neutral medium (CNM) fraction and negligible CO emission. The relative column densities and linewidths of the different molecular species observed here are similar to those observed in previous experiments over a range of Galactic latitudes, suggesting that gas in the solar neighborhood and gas in the Galactic plane are chemically similar. For a select sample of previously-observed sightlines, we show that the absorption line profiles of HCO+^+, HCN, HNC, and C2_2H are stable over periods of ∼3\sim 3 years and ∼25\sim 25 years, likely indicating that molecular gas structures in these directions are at least ≳100\gtrsim 100 AU in size

The role of neutral hydrogen in setting the abundances of molecular species in the Milky Way's diffuse interstellar medium. II. Comparison between observations and theoretical models

We compare observations of HI from the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Arecibo Observatory and observations of HCO+^+ from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) in the diffuse (AV≲1A_V\lesssim1) interstellar medium (ISM) to predictions from a photodissociation region (PDR) chemical model and multi-phase ISM simulations. Using a coarse grid of PDR models, we estimate the density, FUV radiation field, and cosmic ray ionization rate (CRIR) for each structure identified in HCO+^+ and HI absorption. These structures fall into two categories. Structures with Ts<40 KT_s<40~\mathrm{K}, mostly with N(HCO+)≲1012 cm−2N(\mathrm{HCO^+})\lesssim10^{12}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}}, are consistent with modest density, FUV radiation field, and CRIR models, typical of the diffuse molecular ISM. Structures with spin temperature Ts>40 KT_s>40~\mathrm{K}, mostly with N(HCO+)≳1012 cm−2N(\mathrm{HCO^+})\gtrsim10^{12}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}}, are consistent with high density, FUV radiation field, and CRIR models, characteristic of environments close to massive star formation. The latter are also found in directions with a significant fraction of thermally unstable HI. In at least one case, we rule out the PDR model parameters, suggesting that alternative mechanisms (e.g., non-equilibrium processes like turbulent dissipation and/or shocks) are required to explain the observed HCO+^+ in this direction. Similarly, while our observations and simulations of the turbulent, multi-phase ISM agree that HCO+^+ formation occurs along sightlines with N(HI)≳1021 cm−2N(\mathrm{HI})\gtrsim10^{21}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}}, the simulated data fail to explain HCO+^+ column densities ≳few×1012 cm−2\gtrsim\rm{few}\times10^{12}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}}. Since a majority of our sightlines with HCO+^+ had such high column densities, this likely indicates that non-equilibrium chemistry is important for these lines of sight.

Filament Intersections and Cold Dense Cores in Orion A North

We studied the filament structures and dense cores in OMC-2,3 region in Orion A North molecular cloud using the high-resolution N2H+ (1-0) spectral cube observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). The filament network over a total length of 2 pc is found to contain 170 intersections and 128 candidate dense cores. The dense cores are all displaced from the infrared point sources (possible young stars), and the major fraction of cores (103) are located around the intersections. Towards the intersections, there is also an increasing trend for the total column density Ntot as well as the the power-law index of the column-density Probability Distribution Function (N-PDF), suggesting that the intersections would in general have more significant gas assembly than the other part of the filament paths. The virial analysis shows that the dense cores mostly have virial mass ratio of alpha_vir=M_vir/M_gas<1.0, suggesting them to be bounded by the self gravity. In the mean time, only about 23 percent of the cores have critical mass ratio of alpha_crit=M_crit/M_gas<1.0, suggesting them to be unstable against core collapse. Combining these results, it shows that the major fraction of the cold starless and possible prestellar cores in OMC-2,3 are being assembled around the intersections, and currently in a gravitationally bound state. But more extensive core collapse and star formation may still require continuous core-mass growth or other perturbatio

Revealing The CO X-factor In Dark Molecular Gas through Sensitive ALMA Absorption Observations

Carbon-bearing molecules, particularly CO, have been widely used as tracers of molecular gas in the interstellar medium (ISM). In this work, we aim to study the properties of molecules in diffuse, cold environments, where CO tends to be under-abundant and/or sub-thermally excited. We performed one of the most sensitive (down to τrmsCO∼0.002\mathrm{τ_{rms}^{CO} \sim 0.002} and τrmsHCO+∼0.0008\mathrm{τ_{rms}^{HCO^+} \sim 0.0008}) sub-millimeter molecular absorption line observations towards 13 continuum sources with the ALMA. CO absorption was detected in diffuse ISM down to Av<0.32 mag\mathrm{A_v< 0.32\,mag} and \hcop was down to Av<0.2 mag\mathrm{A_v < 0.2\,mag}, where atomic gas and dark molecular gas (DMG) starts to dominate. Multiple transitions measured in absorption toward 3C454.3 allow for a direct determination of excitation temperatures Tex\mathrm{T_{ex}} of 4.1\,K and 2.7\,K, for CO and for \hcop, respectively, which are close to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and provide explanation for their being undercounted in emission surveys. A stronger linear correlation was found between NHCO+\mathrm{N_{HCO^+}} and NH2\mathrm{N_{H_2}} (Pearson correlation coefficient P ∼\sim 0.93) than that of NCO\mathrm{N_{CO}} and NH2\mathrm{N_{H_2}} (P ∼\sim 0.33), suggesting \hcop\ being a better tracer of H2_2 than CO in diffuse gas. The derived CO-to-\h2 conversion factor (the CO X-factor) of (14 ±\pm 3) ×\times 1020^{20} cm−2^{-2} (K \kms)−1^{-1} is approximately 6 times larger than the average value found in the Milky Way.
