From Type II string theory towards BSM/dark sector physics

Four-dimensional compactifications of string theory provide a controlled set of possible gauge representations accounting for BSM particles and dark sector components. In this review, constraints from perturbative Type II string compactifications in the geometric regime are discussed in detail and then compared to results from heterotic string compactifications and non-perturbative/non-geometric corners. As a prominent example, an open string realization of the QCD axion is presented. The status of deriving the associated low-energy effective action in four dimensions is discussed and open avenues of major phenomenological importance are highlighted. As examples, a mechanism of closed string moduli stabilization by D-brane backreaction as well as one-loop threshold corrections to the gauge couplings and balancing a low string scale $M_{\text{string}}$ with unisotropic compact dimensions are discussed together with implications on potential future new physics observations. For illustrative purposes, an explicit example of a globally consistent D6-brane model with MSSM-like spectrum on $T^6/(\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_6 \times Ω{\cal R})$ is presented.

Towards Geometric D6-Brane Model Building on non-Factorisable Toroidal $\mathbb{Z}_4$-Orbifolds

We present a geometric approach to D-brane model building on the non-factorisable torus backgrounds of $T^6/\mathbb{Z}_4$, which are $A_3 \times A_3$ and $A_3 \times A_1 \times B_2$. Based on the counting of `short' supersymmetric three-cycles per complex structure {\it vev}, the number of physically inequivalent lattice orientations with respect to the anti-holomorphic involution ${\cal R}$ of the Type IIA/$Ω\cal{R}$ orientifold can be reduced to three for the $A_3 \times A_3$ lattice and four for the $A_3 \times A_1 \times B_2$ lattice. While four independent three-cycles on $A_3 \times A_3$ cannot accommodate phenomenologically interesting global models with a chiral spectrum, the eight-dimensional space of three-cycles on $A_3 \times A_1 \times B_2$ is rich enough to provide for particle physics models, with several globally consistent two- and four-generation Pati-Salam models presented here. We further show that for fractional {\it sLag} three-cycles, the compact geometry can be rewritten in a $(T^2)^3$ factorised form, paving the way for a generalisation of known CFT methods to determine the vector-like spectrum and to derive the low-energy effective action for open string states.

D6-Brane Model Building on Z(2)xZ(6): MSSM-like and Left-Right Symmetric Models

We perform a systematic search for globally defined MSSM-like and left-right symmetric models on D6-branes on the T6/Z(2)xZ(6)xOR orientifold with discrete torsion. Our search is exhaustive for models that are independent of the value of the one free complex structure modulus. Preliminary investigations suggest that there exists one prototype of visible sector for MSSM-like and another for left-right symmetric models with differences arising from various hidden sector completions to global models. For each prototype, we provide the full matter spectrum, as well as the Yukawa and other three-point couplings needed to render vector-like matter states massive. This provides us with tentative explanations for the mass hierarchies within the quark and lepton sectors. We also observe that the MSSM-like models correspond to explicit realisations of the supersymmetric DFSZ axion model, and that the left-right symmetric models allow for global completions with either completely decoupled hidden sectors or with some messenger states charged under both visible and hidden gauge groups.

Deformations on Tilted Tori and Moduli Stabilisation at the Orbifold Point

We discuss deformations of orbifold singularities on tilted tori in the context of Type IIA orientifold model building with D6-branes on special Lagrangian cycles. Starting from $T^6/(\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2)$, we mod out an additional $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry to describe phenomenologically appealing backgrounds and reduce to $\mathbb{Z}_3$ and $Ω\mathcal{R}$ invariant orbits of deformations. While D6-branes carrying SO(2N) or USp(2N) gauge groups do not constrain deformations, D6-branes with U(N) gauge groups develop non-vanishing D-terms if they couple to previously singular, now deformed cycles. We present examples for both types of D6-branes, and in a three-generation Pati-Salam model on $T^6/(\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_6')$ we find that ten out of 15 twisted complex structure moduli are indeed stabilised at the orbifold point by the existence of the brane stacks.

Deforming D-brane models on $T^6/(\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_{2M})$ orbifolds

We review the stabilisation of complex structure moduli in Type IIA orientifolds, especially on $T^6 / (\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_6^\prime \times Ω\mathcal{R})$ with discrete torsion, via deformations of $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold singularities. While D6-branes in SO(2N) and USp(2N) models always preserve supersymmetry and thus give rise to flat directions, in an exemplary Pati-Salam model with only U(N) gauge groups ten out of the 15 deformation moduli can be stabilised at the orbifold point.

Discrete Abelian gauge symmetries and axions

We combine two popular extensions of beyond the Standard Model physics within the framework of intersecting D6-brane models: discrete Zn symmetries and Peccei-Quinn axions. The underlying natural connection between both extensions is formed by the presence of massive U(1) gauge symmetries in D-brane model building. Global intersecting D6-brane models on toroidal orbifolds of the type T6/Z2N and T6/Z2xZ2M with discrete torsion offer excellent playgrounds for realizing these extensions. A generation-dependent Z2 symmetry is identified in a global Pati-Salam model, while global left-right symmetric models give rise to supersymmetric realizations of the DFSZ axion model. In one class of the latter models, the axion as well as Standard Model particles carry a non-trivial Z3 charge.

From Stringy Particle Physics to Moduli Stabilisation and Cosmology

Intersecting D6-branes provide a geometrically intuitive road to stringy particle physics models, where D6-branes stuck at orbifold singularities can lead to the stabilisation of deformation moduli, and the QCD axion can arise from the open string sector in a very constrained way compared to pure field theory. We demonstrate this interplay of different physical features here through an explicit model.

Model building on the non-factorisable type IIA $\bf{T^6/(\mathbb{Z}_4\timesΩ\mathcal{R})}$ orientifold

We construct global semi-realistic supersymmetric models with intersecting D6-branes on the non-factorisable orientifold $T^6/(\mathbb{Z}_4\timesΩ\mathcal{R})$. The non-factorisable structure gives rise to differences compared to the factorisable case: additional conditions for the three-cycles to be Lagrangian and extra constraints on the wrapping numbers for building fractional cycles.

Circling the Square: Deforming fractional D-branes in Type II/$Ω\mathcal{R}$ orientifolds

We study complex structure deformations of special Lagrangian cycles associated to fractional D-branes at $\mathbb{Z}_2$ singularities in Type II/$Ω\mathcal{R}$ orientifold models. By means of solving hypersurface constraints, we show how to compute the volumes of the most simple D-brane configurations. These volumes are given as a function of the deformation parameters depending on the D-brane position relative to the smoothed out singularity. We observe which cycles keep the special Lagrangian property in various deformation scenarios and what orientifold involutions are allowed. As expected, the volume and thus the tree level value of the gauge coupling hardly change for D-branes not wrapping the exceptional cycle on the deformed singularity, whereas the volume of D-branes passing through the singularity depends on the deformation parameter by some power law.

Rigour and Rigidity: Systematics on particle physics D6-brane models on Z(2)xZ(6)

We launch a systematic search for phenomenologically appealing string vacua with intersecting D-branes on the promising T6/Z(2)xZ(6)xOR orientifold with discrete torsion. The number of independent background lattices is reduced from six to two by new symmetries. The occurrence of USp(2N) and SO(2N) versus U(N) gauge groups is classified as well as D-branes without matter in the adjoint and/or symmetric representation. Supersymmetric fractional D6-branes allowing for RR tadpole cancellation are fully classified in terms of all possible values of the one complex structure modulus inherited from the underlying six-torus. We then systematically investigate the conditions for three particle generations at pairwise intersections of two D6-branes. Global SU(5) GUT models on T6/Z(2)xZ(6)xOR are excluded by demanding three generations and no exotic matter in the 15 representation. Two prototypes of global Pati-Salam models with a mild amount of vector-like exotic matter are found.

D6-Brane Model Building and Discrete Symmetries on T6/Z(2)xZ(6')xOR with Discrete Torsion

We review several geometric aspects and properties of the orbifold T6/Z(2)xZ(6')xOR with discrete torsion, that are crucial with respect to global model building and the search for discrete gauge symmetries in the context of intersecting D6-brane models. A global six-stack Pati-Salam model is used for illustration, and various characteristics of its effective field theory are discussed.

On axionic dark matter in Type IIA string theory

We investigate viable scenarios with various axions in the context of supersymmetric field theory and in globally consistent D-brane models. The Peccei-Quinn symmetry is associated with an anomalous U(1) symmetry, which acquires mass at the string scale but remains as a perturbative global symmetry at low energies. The origin of the scalar Higgs-axion potential from F-, D- and soft breaking terms is derived, and two Standard Model examples of global intersecting D6-brane models in Type II orientifolds are presented, which differ in the realisation of the Higgs sector and in the hidden sector, the latter of which is of particluar importance for the soft supersymmetry breaking terms.

To Tilt or Not To Tilt: Discrete Gauge Symmetries in Global Intersecting D-Brane Models

Discrete gauge symmetries in global intersecting D-brane models constrain the exact form of the perturbative as well as non-perturbative superpotential. We derive the complete set of conditions on the existence of discrete Zn gauge symmetries on toroidal orbifolds, T6/Z(N) and T6/Z(2)xZ(2M}, with fractional or rigid D6-branes on tilted tori, for which global models of particle physics are known. Several examples of global left-right symmetric and Pati-Salam models are presented. Some discrete `stringy' Zn symmetries are trivial from the field theory point of view, while others have not been identified before.

The Importance of Being Rigid: D6-Brane Model Building on T6/Z2xZ6' with Discrete Torsion

Model building with rigid D6-branes on the Type IIA orientifold on T6/Z2xZ6' with discrete torsion is considered. The systematic search for models of particle physics is significantly reduced by proving new symmetries among different lattice orientations. Suitable rigid D6-branes without matter in adjoint and symmetric representations are classified, and SO(2N) and USp(2N) gauge factors on orientifold invariant D6-branes are distinguished in terms of their discrete Wilson line and displacement parameters. Constraints on the non-existence of exotic matter prohibit global completions of local MSSM and left-right symmetric models, while globally defined supersymmetric Pati-Salam models are found. For the latter, only one particle generation possesses perturbative Yukawa couplings. Masses for the mild amount of exotic matter and the role of Abelian symmetries are briefly discussed. Last but not least, it is shown that for all three two-torus volumes of about the same order of magnitude, gauge coupling unification at one-loop can be achieved, while for highly unisotropic choices a low string scale in the TeV range is compatible with the observed strengths of gauge and gravitational couplings.

Towards exact field theory results for the Standard Model on fractional D6-branes

Fractional D6-branes on toroidal orbifold backgrounds are known to be able to accommodate the particle spectrum and gauge group of the Standard Model, but up to now exact results for their low-energy effective action are missing. Here we discuss how the conceptual ansatz of matching the string theoretic gauge couplings at one-loop with the supergravity expressions is generalised from the six-torus to orbifold backgrounds on which the Standard Model spectrum can be realised on fractional D6-branes. The Kaehler metrics and perturbatively exact holomorphic gauge kinetic functions can be classified in terms of the vanishing of some intersection angle and the related beta function coefficients, which potentially opens the possibility to extrapolate to smooth Calabi-Yau backgrounds.

Yukawa couplings and masses of non-chiral states for the Standard Model on D6-branes on T6/Z6'

The perturbative leading order open string three-point couplings for the Standard Model with hidden USp(6) on fractional D6-branes on T6/Z6' from arXiv:0806.3039 [hep-th], arXiv:0910.0843 [hep-th] are computed. Physical Yukawa couplings consisting of holomorphic Wilsonian superpotential terms times a non-holomorphic prefactor involving the corresponding classical open string Kaehler metrics are given, and mass terms for all non-chiral matter states are derived. The lepton Yukawa interactions are at leading order flavour diagonal, while the quark sector displays a more intricate pattern of mixings. While N=2 supersymmetric sectors acquire masses via only two D6-brane displacements - which also provide the hierarchies between up- and down-type Yukawas within one quark or lepton generation -, the remaining vector-like states receive masses via perturbative three-point couplings to some Standard Model singlet fields with vevs along flat directions. Couplings to the hidden sector and messengers for supersymmetry breaking are briefly discussed.

Kaehler metrics and gauge kinetic functions for intersecting D6-branes on toroidal orbifolds - The complete perturbative story

We systematically derive the perturbatively exact holomorphic gauge kinetic function, the open string Kaehler metrics and closed string Kaehler potential on intersecting D6-branes by matching open string one-loop computations of gauge thresholds with field theoretical gauge couplings in N=1 supergravity. We consider all cases of bulk, fractional and rigid D6-branes on T6/OR and the orbifolds T6/(Z(N)xOR) and T6/(Z(2)xZ(2M)xOR) without and with discrete torsion, which differ in the number of bulk complex structures and in the bulk Kaehler potential. Our analysis includes all supersymmetric configurations of vanishing and non-vanishing angles among D6-branes and O6-planes, and all possible Wilson line and displacement moduli are taken into account. The shape of the Kaehler moduli turns out to be orbifold independent but angle dependent, whereas the holomorphic gauge kinetic functions obtain three different kinds of one-loop corrections: a Kaehler moduli dependent one for some vanishing angle independently of the orbifold background, another one depending on complex structure moduli only for fractional and rigid D6-branes, and finally a constant term from intersections with O6-planes. These results are of essential importance for the construction of the related effective field theory of phenomenologically appealing D-brane models. As first examples, we compute the complete perturbative gauge kinetic functions and Kaehler metrics for some T6/Z(2)xZ(2) models with rigid D-branes of arXiv:0902.1694 [hep-th] by Angelantonj et al. As a second class of examples, the Kaehler metrics and gauge kinetic functions for the fractional QCD and leptonic D6-brane stacks of the Standard Model on T6/Z(6') from arXiv:0806.3039 [hep-th] by Gmeiner and Honecker are given.

Rigid D6-branes on T6/[Z(2)xZ(2M)xOmegaR] with discrete torsion

We give a complete classification of T6/[Z(2)xZ(2M)xOmegaR] orientifolds on factorisable tori and rigid D6-branes on them. The analysis includes the supersymmetry, RR tadpole cancellation and K-theory conditions and complete massless open and closed string spectrum (i.e. non-chiral as well as chiral) for fractional or rigid D6-branes for all inequivalent compactification lattices, without and with discrete torsion. We give examples for each orbifold background, which show that on Z(2)xZ(6) and Z(2)xZ(6') there exist completely rigid D6-branes despite the self-intersections of orbifold image cycles. This opens up a new avenue for improved Standard Model building. On the other hand, we show that Standard and GUT model building on the Z(2)xZ(4) background is ruled out by simple arguments.

Complete Gauge Threshold Corrections for Intersecting Fractional D6-Branes: The Z6 and Z6' Standard Models

We perform a complete analysis of one-loop threshold corrections to the gauge couplings of fractional D6-branes. This includes besides SU(N) also symplectic, orthogonal and massless Abelian gauge factors and the full computation of contributions from discrete and continuous Wilson lines and brane displacements. Two classes of globally consistent supersymmetric compactifications with Standard Model spectra on T6/Z6 and T6/Z6' are presented in detail with the latter exhibiting the potential of supersymmetry breaking via a hidden sector gaugino condensate. The T6/Z6' Standard Models are completely classified, and it turns out that out of 768 distinct D6-brane configurations only 16 different sets of massless spectra and ten distinct values of gauge couplings at one-loop arise. The gauge threshold corrections enhance the diversity to 196 nonequivalent models.

Merging Heterotic Orbifolds and K3 Compactifications with Line Bundles

We clarify the relation between six-dimensional Abelian orbifold compactifications of the heterotic string and smooth heterotic K3 compactifications with line bundles for both SO(32) and E_8 x E_8 gauge groups. The T^4/Z_N cases for N=2,3,4 are treated exhaustively, and for N=6 some examples are given. While all T^4/Z_2 and nearly all T^4/Z_3 models have a simple smooth match involving one line bundle only, this is only true for some T^4/Z_4 and T^4/Z_6 cases. We comment on possible matchings with more than one line bundle for the remaining cases. The matching is provided by comparisons of the massless spectra and their anomalies as well as a field theoretic analysis of the blow-ups.

Getting just the Supersymmetric Standard Model at Intersecting Branes on the Z6-orientifold

In this paper, globally N=1 supersymmetric configurations of intersecting D6-branes on the Z6-orientifold are discussed, involving also fractional branes. It turns out rather miraculously that one is led almost automatically to just ONE particular class of 5 stack models containing the SM gauge group, which all have the same chiral spectrum. The further discussion shows that these models can be understood as exactly the supersymmetric standard model without any exotic chiral symmetric/antisymmetric matter. The superpartner of the Higgs finds a natural explanation and the hypercharge remains massless. However, the non-chiral spectrum within the model class is very different and does not in all cases allow for a N=2 low energy field theoretical understanding of the necessary breaking U(1)xU(1)->U(1) along the Higgs branch, which is needed in order to get the standard Yukawa couplings. Also the left-right symmetric models belong to exactly one class of chiral spectra, where the two kinds of exotic chiral fields can have the interpretation of forming a composite Higgs. The aesthetical beauty of these models, involving only non-vanishing intersection numbers of an absolute value three, seems to be unescapable.

Non-Abelian Brane Worlds: The Heterotic String Story

We discuss chiral supersymmetric compactifications of the SO(32) heterotic string on Calabi-Yau manifolds equipped with direct sums of stable bundles with structure group U(n). In addition we allow for non-perturbative heterotic five-branes. These models are S-dual to Type I compactifications with D9- and D5-branes, which by themselves are mirror symmetric to general intersecting D6-brane models. For the construction of concrete examples we consider elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with SU(n) bundles given by the spectral cover construction. The U(n) bundles are obtained via twisting by line bundles. We present a four-generation Pati-Salam and a three-generation Standard-like model.

Chiral supersymmetric models on an orientifold of Z_4 x Z_2 with intersecting D6-branes

We investigate intersecting D6-branes on an orientifold of type IIA theory in the orbifold background T^6/(Z_4 x Z_2) with the emphasis on finding chiral spectra. RR tadpole cancellation conditions and the scalar potential at disc level are computed. The general chiral spectrum is displayed, and two supersymmetric models with a Pati-Salam group are shown, one with four generations and the other one with three generations and exactly the chiral matter content of the SM plus right handed neutrinos.

Non-supersymmetric Orientifolds with D-branes at Angles

We present special classes of orientifold models involving supersymmetry breaking via branes at angles. Type II superstring theories are compactified on a two torus times a four-dimensional orbifold. Combining worldsheet parity with a reflection of half of the compact coordinates leads to D6-branes at angles which are mapped onto each other by the orbifold group, while applying the geometric action only along one coordinate leads to intersecting D8-branes with non-trivial transformation properties under the orbifold group. The models differ in the gauge groups and matter content.

preprint2001arXiv

Orientifolds with branes at angles

We present supersymmetry breaking four dimensional orientifolds of type IIA strings. The compact space is a torus times a four dimensional orbifold. The orientifold group reflects one direction in each torus. RR tadpoles are cancelled by D6-branes intersecting at angles in the torus and in the orbifold. The angles are chosen such that supersymmetry is broken. The resulting four dimensional theories contain chiral fermions. The tadpole cancellation conditions imply that there are no non-abelian gauge anomalies. The models also contain anomaly-free U(1) factors.
