Lower General Position Sets in Graphs

A subset $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a \emph{general position set} if no shortest path in $G$ contains three or more vertices of $S$. In this paper, we generalise a problem of M. Gardner to graph theory by introducing the \emph{lower general position number} $\gp ^-(G)$ of $G$, which is the number of vertices in a smallest maximal general position set of $G$. We show that ${\rm gp}^-(G) = 2$ if and only if $G$ contains a universal line and determine this number for several classes of graphs, including Kneser graphs $K(n,2)$, line graphs of complete graphs, and Cartesian and direct products of two complete graphs. We also prove several realisation results involving the lower general position number, the general position number and the geodetic number, and compare it with the lower version of the monophonic position number. We provide a sharp upper bound on the size of graphs with given lower general position number. Finally we demonstrate that the decision version of the lower general position problem is NP-complete.

Mutual-visibility problems on graphs of diameter two

The mutual-visibility problem in a graph $G$ asks for the cardinality of a largest set of vertices $S\subseteq V(G)$ so that for any two vertices $x,y\in S$ there is a shortest $x,y$-path $P$ so that all internal vertices of $P$ are not in $S$. This is also said as $x,y$ are visible with respect to $S$, or $S$-visible for short. Variations of this problem are known, based on the extension of the visibility property of vertices that are in and/or outside $S$. Such variations are called total, outer and dual mutual-visibility problems. This work is focused on studying the corresponding four visibility parameters in graphs of diameter two, throughout showing bounds and/or closed formulae for these parameters. The mutual-visibility problem in the Cartesian product of two complete graphs is equivalent to (an instance of) the celebrated Zarankievicz's problem. Here we study the dual and outer mutual-visibility problem for the Cartesian product of two complete graphs and all the mutual-visibility problems for the direct product of such graphs as well. We also study all the mutual-visibility problems for the line graphs of complete and complete bipartite graphs. As a consequence of this study, we present several relationships between the mentioned problems and some instances of the classical Turán problem. Moreover, we study the visibility problems for cographs and several non-trivial diameter-two graphs of minimum size.

About the Infinite Windy Firebreak Location problem

The severity of wildfires can be mitigated adopting preventive measures like the construction of firebreaks that are strips of land from which the vegetation is completely removed. In this paper, we model the problem of wildfire containment as an optimization problem on infinite graphs called Infinite Windy Firebreak Location. A land of unknown extension is modeled as an infinite undirected graph in which the vertices correspond to areas subject to fire and edges represent the propagation of fire from an area to another. The construction of a firebreak on the territory is modeled as the removal of edges in both directions between two vertices. The number of firebreaks that can be installed depends on budget constraints. We assume that fire ignites in a subset of vertices and propagates to the neighbours. The goal is to select a subset of edges to remove in order to contain the fire and avoid burning an infinite part of the graph. We prove that Infinite Windy Firebreak Location is coNP-complete in restricted cases and we address some polynomial cases. We show that Infinite Windy Firebreak Location polynomially reduces to Min Cut for certain classes of graphs like infinite grid graphs and polyomino-grids.

On the mutual visibility in Cartesian products and triangle-free graphs

Given a graph $G=(V(G), E(G))$ and a set $P\subseteq V(G)$, the following concepts have been recently introduced: $(i)$ two elements of $P$ are \emph{mutually visible} if there is a shortest path between them without further elements of $P$; $(ii)$ $P$ is a \emph{mutual-visibility set} if its elements are pairwise mutually visible; $(iii)$ the \emph{mutual-visibility number} of $G$ is the size of any largest mutual-visibility set. % In this work we continue to investigate about these concepts. We first focus on mutual-visibility in Cartesian products. For this purpose, too, we introduce and investigate independent mutual-visibility sets. In the very special case of the Cartesian product of two complete graphs the problem is shown to be equivalent to the well-known Zarenkiewicz's problem. We also characterize the triangle-free graphs with the mutual-visibility number equal to $3$.
