One-particle engine with a porous piston

We propose a variation of the classical Szilard engine that uses a porous piston. Such an engine requires neither information about the position of the particle, nor the removal and subsequent insertion of the piston when resetting the engine to continue doing work by lifting a mass against a gravitational field. Though the engine operates in contact with a single thermal reservoir, the reset mechanism acts as a second reservoir, dissipating energy when a mass that has been lifted by the engine is removed to initiate a new operation cycle.

Electric Vector Potential Approach in Electrostatics: The Surface Electrode

Electric vector potential $Θ(\boldsymbol{r})$ is a legitimate but rarely used tool to calculate the steady electric field in free-charge regions. Commonly, it is preferred to employ the scalar electric potential $Φ(\boldsymbol{r})$ rather than $Θ(\boldsymbol{r})$ in most of the electrostatic problems. However, the electric vector potential formulation can be a viable representation to study certain systems. One of them is the surface electrode SE, a planar finite region $\mathcal{A}_{-}$ kept at a fixed electric potential with the rest grounded including a gap of thickness $ν$ between electrodes. In this document we use the \textit{Helmholtz Decomposition Theorem} and the electric vector potential formulation to provide integral expressions for the surface charge density and the electric field of the SE of arbitrary contour $\partial\mathcal{A}$. We also present an alternative derivation of the result found in [M. Oliveira and J. A. Miranda 2001 Eur. J. Phys. 22 31] for the gapless ($ν=0$) surface electrode GSE without invoking any analogy between the GSE and magnetostatics. It is shown that electric vector potential and the electric field of the gapped circular SE at any point can be obtained from an average of the gapless solution on the gap. Keywords: Electric vector potential, surface-electrode, Helmholtz Decomposition, Green's theorem.

Exact Energy Computation of the One Component Plasma on a Sphere for Even Values of the Coupling Parameter

The two dimensional one component plasma 2dOCP is a classical system consisting of $N$ identical particles with the same charge $q$ confined in a two dimensional surface with a neutralizing background. The Boltzmann factor at temperature $T$ may be expressed as a Vandermonde determinant to the power $Γ=q^2/(k_B T)$. Several statistical properties of the 2dOCP have been studied by expanding the Boltzmann factor in the monomial basis for even values of $Γ$. In this work, we use this formalism to compute the energy of the 2dOCP on a sphere. Using the same approach the entropy is computed. The entropy as well as the free energy in the thermodynamic limit have a universal finite-size correction term $\fracχ{12}\log N$, where $χ=2$ is the Euler characteristic of the sphere. A non-recursive formula for coefficients of monomial functions expansion is used for exploring the energy as well as structural properties for sufficiently large values of $Γ$ to appreciate the crystallization features for $N=2,3,\ldots,9$ particles. Finally, we make a brief comparison between the exact and numerical energies obtained with the Metropolis method for even values of $Γ$.

Screening of an electrically charged particle in a two-dimensional two-component plasma at $Γ=2$

We consider the thermodynamic effects of an electrically charged impurity immersed in a two-dimensional two-component plasma, composed by particles with charges $\pm e$, at temperature $T$, at coupling $Γ=e^2/(k_B T)=2$, confined in a large disk of radius $R$. Particularly, we focus on the analysis of the charge density, the correlation functions, and the grand potential. Our analytical results show how the charges are redistributed in the circular geometry considered here. When we consider a positively charged impurity, the negative ions accumulate close to the impurity leaving an excess of positive charge that accumulates at the boundary of the disk. Due to the symmetry under charge exchange, the opposite effect takes place when we place a negative impurity. Both the cases in which the impurity charge is an integer multiple of the particle charges in the plasma, $\pm e$, and a fraction of them are considered; both situations require a slightly different mathematical treatments, showing the effect of the quantization of plasma charges. The bulk and tension effects in the plasma described by the grand potential are not modified by the introduction of the charged particle. Besides the effects due to the collapse coming from the attraction between oppositely charged ions, an additional topological term appears in the grand potential, proportional to $-n^2\ln(mR)$, with $n$ the dimensionless charge of the particle. This term modifies the central charge of the system, from $c=1$ to $c=1-6n^2$, when considered in the context of conformal field theories.

Interacting Steps With Finite-Range Interactions: Analytical Approximation and Numerical Results

We calculate an analytical expression for the terrace-width distribution $P(s)$ for an interacting step system with nearest and next nearest neighbor interactions. Our model is derived by mapping the step system onto a statistically equivalent 1D system of classical particles. The validity of the model is tested with several numerical simulations and experimental results. We explore the effect of the range of interactions $q$ on the functional form of the terrace-width distribution and pair correlation functions. For physically plausible interactions, we find modest changes when next-nearest neighbor interactions are included and generally negligible changes when more distant interactions are allowed. We discuss methods for extracting from simulated experimental data the characteristic scale-setting terms in assumed potential forms.
