Two-point measurement of entropy production from the outcomes of a single experiment with correlated photon pairs

Fluctuation theorems are one of the pillars of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Broadly speaking, they concern the statistical distribution of quantities such as heat, work or entropy production. Quantum experiments, however, usually can only assess these distributions indirectly. In this letter we provide an experimental demonstration of a quantum fluctuation theorem where the distribution of entropy production is obtained directly from the outcomes (clicks) of an optical experiment. The setup consists of entangled photon pairs, one of which is sent an interferometer emulating a finite temperature amplitude damping device. Blocking specific paths of the interferometer is tantamount to restricting the possible configurations of the reservoir. And by measuring its entangled pair, we can directly implement the two-point measurement scheme, thus avoiding the destructive nature of photo-detection.

Detection of quantum non-Markovianity close to the Born-Markov approximation

We calculate in an exact way the conditional past-future correlation for the decay dynamics of a two-level system in a bosonic bath. Different measurement processes are considered. In contrast to quantum memory measures based solely on system propagator properties, here memory effects are related to a convolution structure involving two system propagators and the environment correlation. This structure allows to detect memory effects even close to the validity of the Born-Markov approximation. An alternative operational-based definition of environment-to-system backflow of information follows from this result. We provide experimental support to our results by implementing the dynamics and measurements in a photonic experiment.

Quantum teleportation across a metropolitan fibre network

If a photon interacts with a member of an entangled photon pair via a so-called Bell-state measurement (BSM), its state is teleported over principally arbitrary distances onto the second member of the pair. Starting in 1997, this puzzling prediction of quantum mechanics has been demonstrated many times; however, with one very recent exception, only the photon that received the teleported state, if any, travelled far while the photons partaking in the BSM were always measured closely to where they were created. Here, using the Calgary fibre network, we report quantum teleportation from a telecommunication-wavelength photon, interacting with another telecommunication photon after both have travelled over several kilometres in bee-line, onto a photon at 795~nm wavelength. This improves the distance over which teleportation takes place from 818~m to 6.2~km. Our demonstration establishes an important requirement for quantum repeater-based communications and constitutes a milestone on the path to a global quantum Internet.
