An auto-locking ultra-stable laser with sub-hertz linewidth

We report in detail the design process and performance of an auto-locking ultra-stable laser with sub-hertz linewidth at the first time. The laser frequency is automatically stabilized to an optical reference cavity with a home-made controller, which is based on a combination of digital circuit and analog circuit. The digital circuit is used for diagnosing and manipulating the state of the ultra-stable laser, and the analog circuit is used for demodulating the discriminate signal and servo control. A method of searching the transmission signal in the closed-loop state instead of the open-loop state is proposed to reduce the locking time and improve the reliable of the auto-locking ultra-stable laser. The median time of 16.6s is obtained after 157 times of relocking, and the probability of less than 20 s is more than 86%. The median linewidth of 1.08 Hz is obtained, and the fractional frequency instability is less than 3.4E-15 at integration time between 0.1 and 100 s. The performance of this system demonstrates that will be used as an important subsystem to transfer the optical clock signal.

Broadband critical dynamics in disordered lead-based perovskites

Materials based on the cubic perovskite unit cell continue to provide the basis for technologically important materials with two notable recent examples being lead-based relaxor piezoelectrics and lead-based organic-inorganic halide photovoltaics. These materials carry considerable disorder, arising from site substitution in relaxors and molecular vibrations in the organic-inorganics, yet much of our understanding of these systems derives from the initial classic work of Prof. Roger A. Cowley, who applied both theory and neutron scattering methods while at Chalk River Laboratories to the study of lattice vibrations in SrTiO$_{3}$. Neutron scattering continues to play a vital role in characterizing lattice vibrations in perovskites owing to the simple cross section and the wide range of energy resolutions achievable with current neutron instrumentation. We discuss the dynamics that drive the phase transitions in the relaxors and organic-inorganic lead-halides in terms of neutron scattering and compare them to those in phase transitions associated with a ``central peak" and also a soft mode. We review some of the past experimental work on these materials and present new data from high-resolution time-of-flight backscattering spectroscopy taken on organic-inorganic perovskites. We will show that the structural transitions in disordered lead-based perovskites are driven by a broad frequency band of excitations.

Magnetic order and instability in newly synthesized CoSeAs marcasite

Marcasite class of compounds provide facile platform to explore novel phenomena of fundamental and technological importance, such as unconventional superconductivity or high performance electrocatalyst. We report the synthesis and experimental investigation of a new marcasite CoSeAs in this letter. Experimental investigation of the new material using neutron scattering measurements reveal weak magnetic correlation of cobalt ions below $T$ = 36.2 K. The modest isotropic exchange interaction between cobalt moments, inferred from random phase approximation analysis, hints of magnetically unstable environment. It is a desirable characteristic to induce unconventional superconductivity via chemical pressure application

Universal gapless Dirac cone and tunable topological states in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ heterostructures

In the newly discovered magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, both axion insulator state and quantized anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) have been observed by tuning the magnetic structure. The related (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ heterostructures with increased tuning knobs, are predicted to be a more versatile platform for exotic topological states. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies on a series of the heterostructures (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$). A universal gapless Dirac cone is observed at the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ terminated (0001) surfaces in all systems. This is in sharp contrast to the expected gap from the original antiferromagnetic ground state, indicating an altered magnetic structure near the surface, possibly due to the surface termination. In the meantime, the electron band dispersion of the surface states, presumably dominated by the top surface, is found to be sensitive to different stackings of the underlying MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layers. Our results suggest the high tunability of both magnetic and electronic structures of the topological surface states in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ heterostructures, which is essential in realizing various novel topological states.

Landau modeling of dynamical nucleation of martensite at grain boundaries under local stress

The dynamical nucleation of martensite in polycrystals is simulated by means of Lagrange-Rayleigh dynamics with Landau energetics, which is capable of obtaining the local stress as a result of the interplay of the potential of transformation and external loadings. By monitoring the patio-temporal distribution of the strain in response to the local stress, we demonstrate that the postcursors, high angle grain boundaries and triple junctions act as favorable heterogeneous nucleation sites corresponding to different loading and cooling conditions, and predict the phase diagram of the nucleation mode of martensite.

The Detector System of The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment

The Daya Bay experiment was the first to report simultaneous measurements of reactor antineutrinos at multiple baselines leading to the discovery of $\barν_e$ oscillations over km-baselines. Subsequent data has provided the world's most precise measurement of $\rm{sin}^22θ_{13}$ and the effective mass splitting $Δm_{ee}^2$. The experiment is located in Daya Bay, China where the cluster of six nuclear reactors is among the world's most prolific sources of electron antineutrinos. Multiple antineutrino detectors are deployed in three underground water pools at different distances from the reactor cores to search for deviations in the antineutrino rate and energy spectrum due to neutrino mixing. Instrumented with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the water pools serve as shielding against natural radioactivity from the surrounding rock and provide efficient muon tagging. Arrays of resistive plate chambers over the top of each pool provide additional muon detection. The antineutrino detectors were specifically designed for measurements of the antineutrino flux with minimal systematic uncertainty. Relative detector efficiencies between the near and far detectors are known to better than 0.2%. With the unblinding of the final two detectors' baselines and target masses, a complete description and comparison of the eight antineutrino detectors can now be presented. This paper describes the Daya Bay detector systems, consisting of eight antineutrino detectors in three instrumented water pools in three underground halls, and their operation through the first year of eight detector data-taking.

Fluctuating defects in the incipient relaxor K$_{1-x}$Li$_x$TaO$_3$ (x=0.02)

We report neutron scattering measurements of the structural correlations associated with the apparent relaxor transition in K$_{1-x}$Li$_x$TaO$_3$ for $x=0.02$ (KLT(0.02)). This compound displays a broad and frequency-dependent peak in the dielectric permittivity, which is the accepted hallmark of all relaxors. However, no evidence of elastic diffuse scattering or any soft mode anomaly is observed in KLT(0.02) [J. Wen et al., Phys. Rev. B 78, 144202 (2008)], a situation that diverges from that in other relaxors such as PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_3$. We resolve this dichotomy by showing that the structural correlations associated with the transition in KLT(0.02) are purely dynamic at all temperatures, having a timescale on the order of $\sim$THz. These fluctuations are overdamped, non-propagating, and spatially uncorrelated. Identical measurements made on pure KTaO$_3$ show that they are absent (within experimental error) in the undoped parent material. They exhibit a temperature dependence that correlates well with the dielectric response, which suggests that they are associated with local ferroelectric regions induced by the Li$^+$ doping. The ferroelectric transition that is induced by the introduction of Li$^+$ cations is therefore characterized by quasistatic fluctuations, which represents a stark contrast to the soft harmonic-mode-driven transition observed in conventional perovskite ferroelectrics like PbTiO$_3$. The dynamic, glass-like, structural correlations in KLT(0.02) are much faster than those measured in random-field-based lead-based relaxors, which exhibit a frequency scale of order of $\sim$GHz and are comparatively better correlated spatially. Our results support the view that random fields give rise to the relaxor phenomena, and that the glass-like dynamics observed here characterize a nascent response.

New model of calculating the energy transfer efficiency for the spherical theta-pinch device

Ion-beam-plasma-interaction plays an important role in the field of Warm Dense Matter (WDM) and Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF). A spherical theta pinch is proposed to act as a plasma target in various applications including a plasma stripper cell. One key parameter for such applications is the free electron density. A linear dependency of this density to the amount of energy transferred into the plasma from an energy storage was found by C. Teske. Since the amount of stored energy is known, the energy transfer efficiency is a reliable parameter for the design of a spherical theta pinch device. The traditional two models of energy transfer efficiency are based on assumptions which comprise the risk of systematical errors. To obtain precise results, this paper proposes a new model without the necessity of any assumption to calculate the energy transfer efficiency for an inductively coupled plasma device. Further, a comparison of these three different models is given at a fixed operation voltage for the full range of working gas pressures. Due to the inappropriate assumptions included in the traditional models, one owns a tendency to overestimate the energy transfer efficiency whereas the other leads to an underestimation. Applying our new model to a wide spread set of operation voltages and gas pressures, an overall picture of the energy transfer efficiency results.

Magnons and continua in a magnetized and dimerized spin-1/2 chain

We examine the magnetic field dependent excitations of the dimerized spin-1/2 chain, copper nitrate, with antiferromagnetic intra-dimer exchange $J_1=0.44$ meV and exchange alternation $α=J_2/J_1=0.24$. Magnetic excitations in three distinct regimes of magnetization are probed through inelastic neutron scattering at low temperatures. At low and high fields there are three and two long-lived magnon-like modes, respectively. The number of modes and the anti-phase relationship between the wave-vector dependent energy and intensity of magnon scattering reflect the distinct ground states: A singlet ground state at low fields $μ_0H < μ_0H_{c1} = 2.8$~T and an $S_z=1/2$ product state at high fields $μ_0H > μ_0H_{c2} = 4.2$~T. In the intermediate field regime, a continuum of scattering for $\hbarω\approx J_1$ is indicative of a strongly correlated gapless quantum state without coherent magnons.

Structural phase transition in IrTe$_2$: A combined study of optical spectroscopy and band structure calculations

Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Te$_2$ is an interesting system showing competing phenomenon between structural instability and superconductivity. Due to the large atomic numbers of Ir and Te, the spin-orbital coupling is expected to be strong in the system which may lead to nonconventional superconductivity. We grew single crystal samples of this system and investigated their electronic properties. In particular, we performed optical spectroscopic measurements, in combination with density function calculations, on the undoped compound IrTe$_2$ in an effort to elucidate the origin of the structural phase transition at 280 K. The measurement revealed a dramatic reconstruction of band structure and a significant reduction of conducting carriers below the phase transition. We elaborate that the transition is not driven by the density wave type instability but caused by the crystal field effect which further splits/separates the energy levels of Te (p$_x$, p$_y$) and Te p$_z$ bands.

Structural phase transition induced by van Hove singularity in 5d transition metal compound IrTe2

Comprehensive studies of the electronic states of Ir 5d and Te 5p have been performed to elucidate the origin of the structural phase transition in IrTe2 by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. While no considerable changes are observed in the configuration of the Ir 5d electronic states across the transition, indicating that the Ir 5d orbitals are not involved in the transition, we reveal a van Hove singularity at the Fermi level (EF) related to the Te px+py orbitals, which is removed from EF at low temperatures. The wavevector connecting the adjacent saddle points is consistent with the in-plane projection of the superstructure modulation wavevector. These results can be qualitatively understood with the Rice-Scott "saddle-point" mechanism, while effects of the lattice distortions need to be additionally involved.

A side-by-side comparison of Daya Bay antineutrino detectors

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is designed to determine precisely the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ with a sensitivity better than 0.01 in the parameter sin$^22θ_{13}$ at the 90% confidence level. To achieve this goal, the collaboration will build eight functionally identical antineutrino detectors. The first two detectors have been constructed, installed and commissioned in Experimental Hall 1, with steady data-taking beginning September 23, 2011. A comparison of the data collected over the subsequent three months indicates that the detectors are functionally identical, and that detector-related systematic uncertainties exceed requirements.

Continuous magnetic phase transition in half-frustrated Ca2Os2O7

We present the specific heat, magnetization, optical spectroscopy measurements and the firstprinciple calculations on the Weberite structure Ca2Os2O7 single crystal/polycrystalline sample. The Ca2Os2O7 shows a Curie-Weiss nature at high temperature and goes into a ferrimagnetic insulating state at 327 K on cooling. A λ-like peak is observed at 327 K in the specific heat implying a second-order phase transition. The vanishing electronic specific heat at low temperature suggests a full energy gap. At high temperature above the transition, small amount of itinerant carriers with short life time τare observed, which is gapped at 20 K with a direct gap of 0:24 eV . Our first principle calculations indicate that the anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) correlation with intermediate Coulomb repulsion U could effectively split Os(4b) t2g bands and push them away from Fermi level(EF). On the other hand, a non-collinear magnetic interaction is needed to push the Os(4c) bands away from EF, which could be induced by Os(4c)-Os(4c) frustration. Therefore, AFM correlation, Coulomb repulsion U and non-collinear interaction all play important roles for the insulating ground state in Ca2Os2O7.

Effects of Ru Substitution on Dimensionality and Electron Correlations in Ba(Fe_{1-x}Ru_x)_2As_2

We report a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ for a wide range of Ru concentrations (0.15 $\leq$ \emph{x} $\leq$ 0.74). We observed a crossover from two-dimension to three-dimension for some of the hole-like Fermi surfaces with Ru substitution and a large reduction in the mass renormalization close to optimal doping. These results suggest that isovalent Ru substitution has remarkable effects on the low-energy electron excitations, which are important for the evolution of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in this system.

Electronic properties of 3d transitional metal pnictides : A comparative study by optical spectroscopy

Single-crystalline KFe2As2 and CaT2As2 (T = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) are synthesized and investigated by resistivity, susceptibility and optical spectroscopy. It is found that CaCu2As2 exhibits a similar transition to the lattice abrupt collapse transitions discovered in CaFe2(As1-xPx)2 and Ca1-xRexFe2As2 (Re-rare earth element). The resistivity of KFe2As2 and CaT2As2 (T = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) approximately follows the similar T^2 dependence at low temperature, but the magnetic behaviors vary with different samples. Optical measurement reveals the optical response of CaCu2As2 is not sensitive to the transition at 50 K, with no indication of development of a new energy gap below the transition temperature. Using Drude-Lorentz model, We find that two Drude terms, a coherent one and an incoherent one, can fit the low-energy optical conductivity of KFe2As2 and CaT2As2 (T = Fe, Co, Ni) very well. However, in CaCu2As2, which is a sp-band metal, the low-energy optical conductivity can be well described by a coherent Drude term. Lack of the incoherent Drude term in CaCu2As2 may be attributed to the weaker electronic correlation than KFe2As2 and CaT2As2 (T = Fe, Co, Ni). Spectral weight analysis of these samples indicates that the unconventional spectral weight transfer, which is related to Hund's coupling energy J_H, is only observed in iron pnictides, supporting the viewpoint that J_H may be a key clue to seek the mechanism of magnetism and superconductivity in pnictides.

Evidence for anisotropic polar nanoregions in relaxor PMN: A neutron study of the elastic constants and anomalous TA phonon damping

We use neutron scattering to characterize the acoustic phonons in the relaxor PMN and demonstrate the presence of an anisotropic damping mechanism directly related to short-range, polar correlations. For a large range of temperatures above Tc ~ 210, K, where dynamic polar correlations exist, acoustic phonons propagating along [1\bar{1}0] and polarized along [110] (TA2 phonons) are overdamped and softened across most of the Brillouin zone. By contrast, acoustic phonons propagating along [100] and polarized along [001] (TA1 phonons) are overdamped and softened for only a limited range of wavevectors. The anisotropy and temperature dependence of the acoustic phonon energy linewidth are directly correlated with the elastic diffuse scattering, indicating that polar nanoregions are the cause of the anomalous behavior. The damping and softening vanish for q -> 0, i.e. for long-wavelength acoustic phonons, which supports the notion that the anomalous damping is a result of the coupling between the relaxational component of the diffuse scattering and the harmonic TA phonons. Therefore, these effects are not due to large changes in the elastic constants with temperature because the elastic constants correspond to the long-wavelength limit. We compare the elastic constants we measure to those from Brillouin scattering and to values reported for pure PT. We show that while the values of C44 are quite similar, those for C11 and C12 are significantly less in PMN and result in a softening of (C11-C12) over PT. There is also an increased elastic anisotropy (2C44/(C11-C12)) versus that in PT. These results suggest an instability to TA2 acoustic fluctuations in relaxors. We discuss our results in the context of the debate over the "waterfall" effect and show that they are inconsistent with TA-TO phonon coupling or other models that invoke the presence of a second optic mode.

Measurement of Γ(η-> π^+π^-γ)/Γ(η-> π^+π^-π^0) with the KLOE Detector

The ratio R_η=Γ(η-> π^+π^-γ)/Γ(η-> π^+π^-π^0) has been measured by analyzing 22 million ϕ\to ηγdecays collected by the KLOE experiment at DA\PhiNE, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 558 pb^{-1}. The η\to π^+π^-γproceeds both via the ρresonant contribution, and possibly a non-resonant direct term, connected to the box anomaly. Our result, R_η= 0.1856\pm 0.0005_{stat} \pm 0.0028_{syst}, points out a sizable contribution of the direct term to the total width. The di-pion invariant mass for the η-> π^+π^-γdecay could be described in a model-independent approach in terms of a single free parameter, α. The determined value of the parameter αis α= (1.32 \pm 0.08_{stat} +0.10/-0.09_{syst}\pm 0.02_{theo}) GeV^{-2}

Observation of electron-antineutrino disappearance at Daya Bay

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment has measured a non-zero value for the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations. Antineutrinos from six 2.9 GW$_{\rm th}$ reactors were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baseline 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. With a 43,000 ton-GW_{\rm th}-day livetime exposure in 55 days, 10416 (80376) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to expected number of antineutrinos at the far hall is $R=0.940\pm 0.011({\rm stat}) \pm 0.004({\rm syst})$. A rate-only analysis finds $\sin^22θ_{13}=0.092\pm 0.016({\rm stat})\pm0.005({\rm syst})$ in a three-neutrino framework.

Single crystal growth and optical conductivity of SrPt$_2$As$_2$ superconductors

SrPt$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$-type structure were synthesized by self-melting technique. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, electrical resistivity, specific heat and optical spectroscopy measurements were conducted to elucidate the properties of SrPt$_2$As$_2$. SrPt$_2$As$_2$ single crystals exhibit a superconducting transition at 5.2K, experiencing a structural phase transition well above room temperature (about 455K). The superconducting and structural phase transition temperatures are both reduced by 6% Iridium doping. Both pure SrPt$_2$As$_2$ and the doped single crystals are revealed to be highly metallic with rather high plasma frequencies. In particular, the optical spectroscopy measurement revealed two gap-like suppression features. We elaborated that the one at higher energy scale could be ascribed to the correlation effect, while the other one at lower energy scale is related to the structural phase transition, leading to the removal of a small portion of the Fermi surfaces.

Three-dimensionality and orbital characters of Fermi surface in (Tl,Rb)$_y$Fe$_{2-x}$Se$_2$

We report a comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the tridimensional electronic bands in the recently discovered Fe selenide superconductor (Tl,Rb)$_y$Fe$_{2-x}$Se$_2$ ($T_c=32$ K). We determined the orbital characters and the $k_z$ dependence of the low energy electronic structure by tuning the polarization and the energy of the incident photons. We observed a small 3D electron Fermi surface pocket near the Brillouin zone center and a 2D like electron Fermi surface pocket near the zone boundary. The photon energy dependence, the polarization analysis and the local-density approximation calculations suggest a significant contribution from the Se 4$p_z$ and Fe 3$d_{xy}$ orbitals to the small electron pocket. We argue that the emergence of Se 4$p_z$ states might be the cause of the different magnetic properties between Fe chalcogenides and Fe pnictides.

Two successive field-induced spin-flop transitions in single-crystalline CaCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$

CaCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$, a ThCr$_{2}$Si$_{2}$-structure compound, undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at \emph{T$_{N}$}=76K with the magnetic moments being aligned parallel to the \emph{c} axis. Electronic transport measurement reveals that the coupling between conducting carriers and magnetic order in CaCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is much weaker comparing to the parent compounds of iron pnictide. Applying magnetic field along \emph{c} axis induces two successive spin-flop transitions in its magnetic state. The magnetization saturation behaviors with \emph{\textbf{H}$\parallel$c} and \emph{\textbf{H}$\parallel$ab} at 10K indicate that the antiferromagnetic coupling along \emph{c} direction is very weak. The interlayer antiferromagntic coupling constant \emph{J$_{c}$} is estimated to be about 2 meV.

Infrared spectrum and its implications for the electronic structure of the semiconducting iron selenide K$_{0.83}$Fe$_{1.53}$Se$_2$

We report an infrared spectroscopy study on K$_{0.83}$Fe$_{1.53}$Se$_2$, a semiconducting parent compound of the new iron-selenide system. The major spectral features are found to be distinctly different from all other Fe-based superconducting systems. Our measurement revealed two peculiar spectral structures: a double peak structure between 4000-6000 cm$^{-1}$ and abundant phonon modes much more than those expected for a 122 structure. We elaborate that those features could be naturally explained from the blocked antiferromagnetism due to the presence of Fe vacancy ordering as determined by recent neutron diffraction experiments. The double peaks reflect the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings between the neighboring Fe sites.

Measurement of $Γ(η\to π^+π^-γ)/Γ(η\to π^+π^-π^0)$ with KLOE experiment

We report the measurement of the ratio $Γ(η\to π^+π^-γ)/Γ(η\to π^+π^-π^0)$ analyzing a large sample of $ϕ\to ηγ$ decays recorded with the KLOE experiment at the DA$Φ$NE $e^+ e^-$ collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 558 pb$^{-1}$. The $η\to π^+π^-γ$ process is supposed to proceed both via a resonant contribution, mediated by the $ρ$ meson, and a non resonant direct term, connected to the box anomaly. The presence of the direct term affects the partial width value. Our result $R_η=Γ(η\to π^+ π^- γ)/Γ(η\to π^+ π^- π^0)= 0.1838\pm 0.0005_{stat} \pm 0.0030_{syst}$ is in agreement with a recent CLEO measurement, which differs by more 3 $σ$ from the average of previous results.

Absence of holelike Fermi surface in superconducting K0.8Fe1.7Se2 revealed by ARPES

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the new iron-based superconductor K0.8Fe1.7Se2 (Tc ~ 30 K). Clear band dispersion is observed with the overall bandwidth renormalized by a factor of 2.5 compared to our local density approximation calculations, indicating relatively strong correlation effects. Only an electronlike band crosses the Fermi energy, forming a nearly circular Fermi surface (FS) at M (π, 0). The holelike band at Γ sinks ~ 90 meV below the Fermi energy, with an indirect band gap of 30 meV to the bottom of the electronlike band. The observed FS topology in this superconductor favors (π, π) inter-FS scattering between the electronlike FSs at the M points, in sharp contrast with other iron-based superconductors which favor (π, 0) inter-FS scattering between holelike and electronlike FSs.

Electron-Hole Asymmetry in Superconductivity of Pnictides Originated from the Observed Rigid Chemical Potential Shift

We have performed a systematic photoemission study of the chemical potential shift as a function of carrier doping in a pnictide system based on BaFe$_2$As$_2$. The experimentally determined chemical potential shift is consistent with the prediction of a rigid band shift picture by the renormalized first-principle band calculations. This leads to an electron-hole asymmetry (EHA) in the Fermi surface (FS) nesting condition due to different effective masses for different FS sheets, which can be calculated from the Lindhard function of susceptibility. This built-in EHA from the band structure, which matches well with observed asymmetric superconducting domes in the phase diagram, strongly supports FS near-nesting driven superconductivity in the iron pnictides.

Fermiology of Sr4V2O6Fe2As2: Quasi-Nested Fe vs Mott-Insulating V Orbitals

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of a new iron-based superconductor Sr4V2O6Fe2As2. While V 3d orbitals are found to be in a Mott insulator state and show an incoherent peak at ~ 1 eV below the Fermi level, the dispersive Fe 3d bands form several hole- and electron-like Fermi surfaces (FSs), some of which are quasi-nested by the (pi, 0) wave vector. This differs from the local density approximation (LDA) calculations, which predict non-nested FSs for this material. However, LDA+U with a large effective Hubbard energy U on V 3d electrons can reproduce the experimental observation reasonably well. The observed fermiology in superconducting Sr4V2O6Fe2As2 strongly supports that (pi, 0) interband scattering between quasi-nested FSs is indispensable to superconductivity in pnictides.

Investigation of the spin-glass regime between the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases in Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_x$Te$_{1-x}$

Using bulk magnetization along with elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques, we have investigated the phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_{x}$Te$_{1-x}$ and the nature of magnetic correlations in three nonsuperconducting samples of Fe$_{1.01}$Se$_{0.1}$Te$_{0.9}$, Fe$_{1.01}$Se$_{0.15}$Te$_{0.85}$ and Fe$_{1.02}$Se$_{0.3}$Te$_{0.7}$. A cusp and hysteresis in the temperature dependence of the magnetization for the $x=0.15$ and 0.3 samples indicates spin-glass (SG) ordering below $T_{\rm sg} = 23$K. Neutron scattering measurements indicate that the spin-glass behavior is associated with short-range spin density wave (SDW) ordering characterized by a static component and a low-energy dynamic component with a characteristic incommensurate wave vector of ${\bf Q}_m = (0.46, 0, 0.50)$ and an anisotropy gap of $\sim$ 2.5 meV. Our high ${\bf Q}$-resolution data also show that the systems undergo a glassy structural distortion that coincides with the short-range SDW order.

Three dimensionality of band structure and a large residual quasiparticle population in Ba$_{0.67}$K$_{0.33}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ as revealed by the c-axis polarized optical measurement

We report on a c-axis polarized optical measurement on a Ba$_{0.67}$K$_{0.33}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal. We find that the c-axis optical response is significantly different from that of high-T$_c$ cuprates. The experiments reveal an anisotropic three-dimensional optical response with the absence of the Josephson plasma edge in R($ω$) in the superconducting state. Furthermore, different from the ab-plane optical response, a large residual quasiparticle population down to $T\sim\frac{1}{5}T_c$ was observed in the c-axis polarized reflectance measurement. We elaborate that there exist nodes for the superconducting gap in regions of the 3D Fermi surface that contribute dominantly to the c-axis optical conductivity.

Gutzwiller density functional calculations of the electronic structure of FeAs-based superconductors: Evidence for a three-dimensional Fermi surface

The electronic structures of FeAs-compounds strongly depend on the Fe-As bonding, which can not be described successfully by the local density approximation (LDA). Treating the multi-orbital fluctuations from $ab$-$initio$ by LDA+Gutzwiller method, we are now able to predict the correct Fe-As bond-length, and find that Fe-As bonding-strength is 30% weaker, which will explain the observed "soft phonon". The bands are narrowed by a factor of 2, and the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbital is pushed up to cross the Fermi level, forming 3-dimensional Fermi surfaces, which suppress the anisotropy and the ($π,π$) nesting. The inter-orbital Hund's coupling $J$ rather than $U$ plays crucial roles to obtain these results.

Measurement of the branching ratio and search for a CP violating asymmetry in the eta -> pi+pi-e+e-(gamma) decay at KLOE

We have studied the eta->pi+pi-e+e-(gamma) decay using about 1.7 fb^-1 collected by the KLOE experiment at the DAFNE phi-factory. This corresponds to about 72 millions eta mesons produced in phi radiative decays. We have measured the branching ratio, inclusive of radiative effects, with 4% accuracy: BR(eta->pi+pi-e+e-(gamma)) = (26.8 +/- 0.9_Stat. +/- 0.7_Syst.) x 10^-5. We have obtained the first measurement of the CP-odd pipi-ee decay planes angular asymmetry, A_phi = (-0.6 +/- 2.5_Stat. +/- 1.8_Syst.) x 10^-2.

Search for the decay phi -> K0 K0bar gamma with the KLOE experiment

We have searched for the decay phi -> K0 K0bar gamma, by detecting K_s pairs plus a photon and with the K_s-mesons decaying to pi^+ pi^-, in a sample of about 1.5x 10^9 phi-decays collected by the KLOE experiment at DAFNE. The reaction proceeds through the intermediate states f_0(980) gamma, a_0(980) gamma. We find five events with 3.2 events expected from background processes. We obtain the upper limit: BR (phi -> K0 K0bar gamma) < 1.9x10^-8 at 90% C.L. .

Study of the a_0(980) meson via the radiative decay phi->eta pi^0 gamma with the KLOE detector

We have studied the phi->a_0(980) gamma process with the KLOE detector at the Frascati phi-factory DAPhNE by detecting the phi->eta pi^0 gamma decays in the final states with eta->gamma gamma and eta->pi^+ pi^- pi^0. We have measured the branching ratios for both final states: Br(phi->eta pi^0 gamma)=(7.01 +/- 0.10 +/- 0.20)x10^-5 and (7.12 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.22)x10^-5 respectively. We have also extracted the a_0(980) mass and its couplings to eta pi^0, K^+ K^-, and to the phi meson from the fit of the eta pi^0 invariant mass distributions using different phenomenological models.

Test of a LYSO matrix with an electron beam

The angular coverage extension of the KLOE-2 electromagnetic calorimeter, from a polar angle of 20$^{\circ}$ down to $8^{\circ}$, will increase the multiphoton detection capability of the experiment enhancing the search reach for rare kaon, $η$ and $η'$ prompt decay channels. The basic layout of the calorimeter extension consists of two small barrels of LYSO crystals readout with APD photosensors aiming to achieve a timing resolution between 300 and 500 ps for 20 MeV photons. The first test of a (5.5$\times6\times$13) cm$^3$ prototype for such a detector was carried out in april 2009 at the Beam Test Facility of Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati of INFN with an electron beam from 100 to 500 MeV. In the selected energy range, we measured a light yield of 500$÷$800 p.e./Mev, an energy resolution which can be parametrized as $0.05 \oplus 0.01/({\rm E/GeV}) \oplus 0.015/\sqrt{\rm{E/GeV}}$, a position resolution of 2.8 mm and a timing resolution of 200$÷$300 ps.

Hypernuclear Spectroscopy using the (e,e'K+) Reaction

A pioneering experiment in Lambda hypernuclear spectroscopy, undertaken at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jlab), was recently reported. The experiment used the high- precision, continuous electron beam at Jlab, and a special arrangement of spectrometer magnets to measure the spectrum from {nat}C and 7Li targets using the (e,e' K+)reaction. The 12B hypernuclear spectrum was previously published. This experiment is now reported in more detail, with improved results for the 12B hypernuclear spectrum. In addition, unpublished results of the 7He hypernuclear spectrum are also shown. This later spectrum indicates the need for a more detailed few-body calculation of the hypernucleus and the reaction process. The success of this experiment demonstrates that the (e,e'K+) reaction can be effectively used as a high resolution tool to study hypernuclear spectra, ant its use should be vigorously pursued.

A neutron scattering study of two-magnon states in the quantum magnet copper nitrate

We report measurements of the two-magnon states in a dimerized antiferromagnetic chain material, copper nitrate (Cu(NO3)2*2.5D2O). Using inelastic neutron scattering we have measured the one and two magnon excitation spectra in a large single crystal. The data are in excellent agreement with a perturbative expansion of the alternating Heisenberg Hamiltonian from the strongly dimerized limit. The expansion predicts a two-magnon bound state for q ~ (2n+1)pi*d which is consistent with the neutron scattering data.
