Lattice dynamics across the ferroelastic phase transition in Ba2ZnTeO6: A Raman and first-principles study

Structural phase transitions drive several unconventional phenomena including some illustrious ferroic attributes which are relevant for technological advancements. With this note, we have investigated the structural transition of perovskite-type trigonal Ba2ZnTeO6, across Tc ~ 150 K, which is also accompanied by a para- to ferroelastic transition. With the help of Raman spectroscopy and density-functional theory (DFT)-based calculations, here we report new intriguing observations associated with the phase transition in Ba2ZnTeO6 elucidating the lattice dynamics across the Tc. We have observed the presence of a central peak (quasi-elastic Rayleigh profile), huge softening in the soft mode, hysteretic phonon behavior, and signatures of coexistent phases. The existence of a central peak in Ba2ZnTeO6 is manifested by a sharp rise in the intensity of the Rayleigh profile in concomitant with the damping of the soft mode near Tc, shedding light on the lattice dynamics during the phase transition. While most of the phonon bands split below Tc confirming the phase transition, we have observed thermal hysteretic behavior of phonon modes that signifies the first-order nature of the transition and presence of coexisting phases, which are corroborated by our temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction and specific heat measurements. Further, an evidence of the concomitant structural transition appears in the form of huge softening in the thermal response of the soft phonon mode at ~ 31 cm-1 which is remarkable compared to the hitherto known behavior of soft modes in well-known ferroelectrics. This is further corroborated by our phonon calculations that show an unstable Eg-mode in the high-symmetry structure involving TeO6 octahedral rotation (with Ba and Zn translation) which later condenses into the C2/m low-symmetry phase.

Ab-initio study of structural, vibrational and optical properties of solid oxidizers

We report the structural, elastic and vibrational properties of five ionic-molecular solid oxidizers MNO$_3$ (M = Li, Na, K) and MClO$_3$ (M = Na, K). By treating long range electron-correlation effects, dispersion corrected method leads to more accurate predictions of structural properties and phase stability of KNO$_3$ polymorphs. The obtained elastic moduli show soft nature of these materials and are consistent with Ultrasonic Pulse Echo measurements. We made a complete assignment of vibrational modes which are in good accord with available experimental results. From calculated IR and Raman spectra, it is found that the vibrational frequencies show a red-shift from Li -> Na -> K (Na -> K) and N -> Cl for nitrates (chlorates) due to increase in mass of metal and non-metal atoms, respectively. The calculated electronic structure using recently developed Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson potential show that the materials are wide band gap insulators with predominant ionic bonding between M$^+$ (metal) and NO$_3^-$ /ClO$_3^-$ ions and covalent bonding (N-O and Cl-O) within nitrate and chlorate anionic group. From the calculated optical spectra, we observe that electric-dipole transitions are due to nitrate/chlorate group below 20 eV and cationic transitions occur above 20 eV. The calculated reflectivity spectra are consistent with the available experimental spectra.

Electronic topological transitions in Nb$_3$X (X = Al, Ga, In, Ge and Sn) under compression investigated by first principles calculations

First principles electronic structure calculations of A-15 type Nb$_3$X (X = Al, Ga, In, Ge and Sn) compounds are performed at ambient and high pressures. Mechanical stability is confirmed in all the compounds both at ambient as well as under compression from the calculated elastic constants. We have observed four holes and two electron Fermi surfaces (FS) for all the compounds studied and FS nesting feature is observed at M and along X - $Γ$ in all the compounds. A continuous change in the FS topology is observed under pressure in all the compounds which is also reflected in the calculated elastic constants and density of states under pressure indicating the Electronic topological transitions (ETT). The ETT observed at around 21.5 GPa, 17.5 GPa in Nb$_3$Al and Nb$_3$Ga are in good agreement with the anomalies observed by the experiments.

High pressure structural, elastic and vibrational properties of green energetic oxidizer ammonium dinitramide

Ammonium DiNitramide (ADN) is one of the most promising green energetic oxidizers for future rocket propellant formulations. In the present work, we report a detailed theoretical study on structural, elastic, and vibrational properties of the emerging oxidizer under hydrostatic compression using various dispersion correction methods to capture weak intermolecular (van der Waals and hydrogen bonding) interactions. The calculated ground state lattice parameters, axial compressibilities, and equation of state are in good accord with the available experimental results. Strength of intermolecular interactions has been correlated using the calculated compressibility curves and elastic moduli. Apart from this, we also observe discontinuities in the structural parameters and elastic constants as a function of pressure. Pictorial representation and quantification of intermolecular interactions are described by the 3D Hirshfeld surfaces and 2D finger print maps. In addition, the computed infra-red (IR) spectra at ambient pressure reveal that ADN is found to have more hygroscopic nature over Ammonium Perchlorate (AP) due to the presence of strong hydrogen bonding. Pressure dependent IR spectra show blue- and red-shift of bending and stretching frequencies which leads to weakening and strengthening of the hydrogen bonding below and above 5 GPa, respectively. The abrupt changes in the calculated structural, mechanical, and IR spectra suggest that ADN might undergo a first order structural transformation to a high pressure phase around 5-6 GPa. From the predicted detonation properties, ADN is found to have high and low performance characteristics when compared with ammonium based energetic oxidizers and well-known secondary explosives, respectively.

High pressure structural, electronic, and optical properties of polymorphic InVO4 phases

In the present work, we report a detailed density functional theory calculation on polymorphic InVO$_4$ phases by means of projector augmented wave method. The computed first-order structural phase transformation from orthorhombic \emph{(Cmcm)} to monoclinic \emph{(P2/c)} structure is found to occur around 5.6 GPa along with a large volume collapse of 16.6$\%$, which is consistent with previously reported experimental data. This transformation also leads to an increase in the coordination number of vanadium atom from 4 to 6. The computed equilibrium and high pressure structural properties of both InVO$_4$ phases, including unit cell parameters, equation of state, and bulk moduli, are in good agreement with the available experimental data. In addition, compressibility is found to be highly anisotropic and the \emph{b}-axis being more compressible than the other for both the structures. Electronic band structures for both the phases were calculated, and the band gap for orthorhombic and monoclinic InVO$_4$ are found to be 4.02 and 1.67 eV, respectively, within the Tran-Blaha Modified Becke-Johnson potential as implemented in linearized augmented planewave method. We further examined the optical properties such as dielectric function, refractive index, and absorption spectra for both the structures. From the implications of these results, it can be proposed that the high pressure InVO$_4$ phase can be more useful than orthorhombic phase for photo catalytic applications.

Structural, electronic and optical properties of well-known primary explosive: Mercury fulminate

Mercury Fulminate (MF) is one of the well-known primary explosives since 17th century and it has rendered invaluable service over many years. However, the correct molecular and crystal structures are determined recently after 300 years of its discovery. In the present study, we report pressure dependent structural, elastic, electronic and optical properties of MF. Non-local correction methods have been employed to capture the weak van der Waals interactions in layered and molecular energetic MF. Among the non-local correction methods tested, optB88-vdW method works well for the investigated compound. The obtained equilibrium bulk modulus reveals that MF is softer than the well known primary explosives Silver Fulminate (SF), silver azide and lead azide. MF exhibits anisotropic compressibility (b>a>c) under pressure, consequently the corresponding elastic moduli decrease in the following order: C22>C11>C33. The structural and mechanical properties suggest that MF is more sensitive to detonate along c-axis (similar to RDX) due to high compressibility of Hg...O non-bonded interactions along that axis. Electronic structure and optical properties were calculated including spin-orbit (SO) interactions using full potential linearized augmented plane wave method within recently developed Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson (TB-mBJ) potential. The calculated TB-mBJ electronic structures of SF and MF show that these compounds are indirect bandgap insulators. Also, SO coupling is found to be more pronounced for 4d and 5d-states of Ag and Hg atoms of SF and MF, respectively. Partial density of states and electron charge density maps were used to describe the nature of chemical bonding. Ag-C bond is more directional than Hg-C bond which makes SF to be more unstable than MF. The effect of SO coupling on optical properties has also been studied and found to be significant for both of the compounds.

CuAlTe$_2$: A promising bulk thermoelectric material

Transport properties of Cu-based chalcopyrite materials are presented using the full potential linear augmented plane wave method and Boltzmann Semi-classical theory. All the studied compounds appear to be direct band gap semiconductors evaluated based on the Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson potential. The heavy and light band combination found near the valence band maximum (VBM) drive these materials to possess good thermoelectric properties. Among the studied compounds, CuAlTe$_2$ is found to be more promising, in comparison with CuGaTe$_2$, which is reported to be an efficient thermoelectric material with appreciable figure of merit. Another interesting fact about CuAlTe$_2$ is the comparable thermoelectric properties possessed by both $n-$ type and $p-$ type carriers, which might attract good device applications and are explained in detail using the electronic structure calculations.

Dispersion Corrected Structural Properties and Quasiparticle Band Gaps of Several Organic Energetic Solids

We have performed {\it ab initio} calculations for a series of energetic solids to explore their structural and electronic properties. To evaluate the ground state volume of these molecular solids, different dispersion correction methods were accounted in DFT, namely the Tkatchenko-Scheffler method (with and without self-consistent screening), Grimme's methods (D2, D3(BJ)) and the vdW-DF method. Our results reveals that dispersion correction methods are essential in understanding these complex structures with van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding. The calculated ground state volumes and bulk moduli show that the performance of each method is not unique, and therefore a careful examination is mandatory for interpreting theoretical predictions. This work also emphasizes the importance of quasiparticle calculations in predicting the band gap, which is obtained here with the GW approximation. We find that the obtained band gaps are ranging from 4 to 7 eV for the different compounds, indicating their insulating nature. In addition, we show the essential role of quasiparticle band structure calculations to correlate the gap with the energetic properties.

Electronic Structure, Transport and Phonons of SrAg$Ch$F ($Ch$=S, Se, Te): Bulk Superlattice Thermoelectrics

We report calculations of the electronic structure, vibrational properties and transport for the p-type semiconductors, SrAg$Ch$F ($Ch$=S, Se and Te). We find soft phonons with low frequency optical branches intersecting the acoustic modes below 50 $cm^{-1}$, indicative of a material with low thermal conductivity. The bands at and near the valence band maxima are highly two dimensional, which leads to high thermopowers even at high carrier concentrations, which is a combination that suggests good thermoelectric performance. These materials may be regarded as bulk realizations of superlattice thermoelectrics.

Phase stability and lattice dynamics of ammonium azide under hydrostatic compression

We have investigated the effect of hydrostatic pressure and temperature on phase stability of hydro-nitrogen solids using dispersion corrected Density Functional Theory calculations. From our total energy calculations, Ammonium Azide (AA) is found to be the thermodynamic ground state of N$_4$H$_4$ compounds in preference to Trans-Tetrazene (TTZ), Hydro-Nitrogen Solid-1 (HNS-1) and HNS-2 phases. We have carried out a detailed study on structure and lattice dynamics of the equilibrium phase (AA). AA undergoes a phase transition to TTZ at around $\sim$ 39-43 GPa followed by TTZ to HNS-1 at around 80-90 GPa under the studied temperature range of 0-650 K. The accelerated and decelerated compression of $a$ and $c$ lattice constants suggest that the ambient phase of AA transforms to a tetragonal phase and then to a low symmetry structure with less anisotropy up on further compression. We have noticed that the angle made by Type-II azides with $c$-axis shows a rapid decrease and reaches a minimum value at 12 GPa, and thereafter increases up to 50 GPa. Softening of the shear elastic moduli is suggestive of a mechanical instability of AA under high pressure. In addition, we have also performed density functional perturbation theory calculations to obtain the vibrational spectrum of AA at ambient as well as at high pressures. Further, we have made a complete assignment of all the vibrational modes which is in good agreement with the experimental observations at ambient pressure. Also the calculated pressure dependent IR spectra show that the N-H stretching frequencies undergo a red and blue-shift corresponding to strengthening and weakening of hydrogen bonding, respectively below and above 4 GPa.

Structural stability, vibrational and bonding properties of potassium 1,1$'$-dinitroamino-5,5$'$ bistetrazolate: An emerging green primary explosive

Potassium 1,1$'$-dinitroamino-5,5$'$ bistetrazolate (K$_2$DNABT) is a nitrogen rich (50.3 $\%$ by weight, \ce{K2C2N12O4}) green primary explosive with high performance characteristics namely velocity of detonation (D = 8.33 km/s), detonation pressure (P = 31.7 GPa) and fast initiating power to replace existing toxic primaries. In the present work, we report density functional theory (DFT) calculations on structural, equation of state, vibrational spectra, electronic structure and absorption spectra of K$_2$DNABT. We have discussed the influence of weak dispersive interactions on structural and vibrational properties through the DFT-D2 method. We find anisotropic compressibility (b $<$ a $<$ c) from pressure dependent structural properties. The predicted bulk modulus reveals that the material is harder than cyanuric triazide (\ce{C3N12}) and softer than lead azide (\ce{Pb(N3)2}). A complete assignment of all vibrational modes has been made and compared with the available experimental results. The calculated zone centre IR and Raman frequencies show a blue-shift which leads to a hardening of the lattice upon compression. In addition, we have also calculated the electronic structure and absorption spectra using the recently developed Tran Blaha-modified Becke Johnson potential. It is found that K$_2$DNABT is a direct band gap insulator with a band gap of 3.87 eV and the top of the valence band mainly dominated by $2p$-states of oxygen and nitrogen atoms. K$_2$DNABT exhibits mixed ionic (between potassium and tetrazolate ions) and covalent character within tetrazolate molecule. The presence of ionic bonding suggests that the investigated compound is relatively stable and insensitive than covalent primaries. From the calculated absorption spectra, the material is found to decompose under ultra-violet light irradiation.

Density functional study of electronic structure, elastic and optical properties of MNH$_2$ (M=Li, Na, K, Rb)

We report systematic first principles density functional study on the electronic structure, elastic and optical properties of nitrogen based solid hydrogen storage materials LiNH$_2$, NaNH$_2$, KNH$_2$, and RbNH$_2$. The ground state structural properties are calculated by using standard density functional theory and also dispersion corrected density functional theory. We find that van der Waals interactions are dominant in LiNH$_2$ whereas they are relatively weak in other alkali metal amides. The calculated elastic constants show that all the compounds are mechanically stable and LiNH$_2$ is found to be stiffer material among the alkali metal amides. The melting temperatures are calculated and which follows the order RbNH$_2$ $<$ KNH$_2$ $<$ NaNH$_2$ $<$ LiNH$_2$. The electronic band structure is calculated by using the Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson potential and found that all the compounds are insulators with a considerable band gap. The [NH$_2$]$^-$ derived states are completely dominating in the entire valence band region while the metal atom states occupy the conduction band. The calculated band structure is used to analyze the different interband optical transitions occur between valence and conduction bands. Our calculations show that these materials have considerable optical anisotropy.

High Pressure Structural Stability, and Optical Properties of Scheelite type ZrGeO$_4$ and HfGeO$_4$ X-ray Phosphor Hosts

\emph{Ab-initio} calculations were performed on the scheelite type MGeO$_4$ (M = Hf, and Zr) compounds which find wide range of applications such as in x-ray imaging. We have studied the high pressure structural stability, elastic constants, electronic structure and optical properties of these compounds through density functional theory calculations. Two different density functional approaches namely plane wave pseudopotential method (PW-PP) and full potential linearized augmented plane wave method (FP-LAPW) were used for the present study. The ground state structural and vibrational properties are calculated and found to be in good agreement with experimental data. The compressibility of Zr and Hf germanates is found to be anisotropic as the a-axis is less compressible over c-axis due to the presence of Ge-O bonds along a-axis which is further confirmed from the ordering of the elastic constants that follows C$_{11}$ $>$ C$_{33}$. The electronic structure of the compounds has been calculated through recently developed Tran Blaha-modified Becke Johnson potential. The calculated electronic structure shows that the compounds are insulators with a gap of 5.39 eV for ZrGeO$_4$ and 6.25 eV for HfGeO$_4$ respectively. Optical anisotropy of these compounds are revealed from the computed optical properties such as complex dielectric function, refractive index, and absorption coefficient. In addition, it is observed that Ti doped ZrGeO$_4$ and HfGeO$_4$ turns out to be a good phosphor as the pristine compounds have the energy gap greater than the visible range upon Ti doping bandgap reduces as a result emission spectra occurs in the visible region and is well explained in the present study.

Polymorphism and thermodynamic ground state of Silver fulminate studied from van der Waals density functional calculations

Silver fulminate (AgCNO) is a primary explosive, which exists in two polymorphic phases namely orthorhombic (\emph{Cmcm}) and trigonal (\emph{R$\bar{3}$}) forms at ambient conditions. In the present study, we have investigated the effect of pressure and temperature on relative phase stability of the polymorphs using planewave pseudopotential approaches based on Density Functional Theory (DFT). van der Waals interactions play a significant role in predicting the phase stability and they can be effectively captured by semiempirical dispersion correction methods incontrast to standard DFT functionals. Based on our total energy calculations using DFT-D2 method, the \emph{Cmcm} structure is found to be the preferred thermodynamic equilibrium phase under studied pressure and temperature range. Hitherto \emph{Cmcm} and \emph{R$\bar{3}$} phases denoted as $α$ and $β$-forms of AgCNO, respectively. Also a pressure induced polymorphic phase transition is seen using DFT functionals and the same was not observed with DFT-D2 method. The equation of state and compressibility of both polymorphic phases were investigated. Electronic structure and optical properties were calculated using full potential linearized augmented plane wave method within the Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson potential. The calculated electronic structure shows that $α$, $β$ phases are indirect band gap insulators with a band gap values of 3.51 and 4.43 eV, respectively. The nature of chemical bonding is analyzed through the charge density plots and partial density of states. Optical anisotropy, electric-dipole transitions and photo sensitivity to light of the polymorphs are analyzed from the calculated optical spectra. Overall, the present study provides an early indication to experimentalists to avoid the formation of unstable $β$-form of AgCNO.

We present density functional theory calculations on the crystal structure, equation of state, vibrational properties and electronic structure of nitrogen-rich solid energetic material guanidinium 2-methyl-5-nitraminotetrazolate (G-MNAT). The ground state structural properties calculated with dispersion corrected density functionals are in good agreement with experiment. The computed equilibrium crystal structure is further used to calculate the equation of state and zone-center vibrational frequencies of the material. The electronic band structure is calculated and found that the material is an indirect band gap semiconductor with a value of 3.04 eV.

Structural, elastic, optical properties and quasiparticle band structure of solid cyanuric triazide

In this letter, we report the structural, elastic, and quasiparticle band structure of cynauric triazide. The structural properties using a dispersion corrected method to treat van der Waals (vdW) forces offers a significant improvement in the description of the ground state properties. The predicted bulk modulus from the equation of state and the elastic constants are consistent and the magnitude lies in the order of secondary explosives. Then, the G$_0$W$_0$ approximation is used to study the band structure and an indirect band gap of 6.33 eV is obtained. Finally, we have calculated the optical and detonation characteristics at ambient pressure.

Structural, vibrational, and quasiparticle band structure of 1, 1 - diamino-2, 2 - dinitroethelene from ab-initio calculations

The effect of pressure on the structural and vibrational properties of the layered molecular crystal 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethelene (FOX-7) are explored by first principles calculations. We observe significant changes in the calculated structural properties with different corrections for treating van der Waals interactions to Density Functional Theory (DFT), as compared with standard DFT functionals. In particular, the calculated ground state lattice parameters, volume and bulk modulus obtained with Grimme's scheme are found to agree well with experiments. The calculated vibrational frequencies demonstrates the dependence of the intra and inter-molecular interactions in FOX-7 under pressure. In addition, we also found a significant increment in the N-H...O hydrogen bond strength under compression. This is explained by the change in bond lengths between nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen atoms, as well as calculated IR spectra under pressure. Finally, the computed band gap is about 2.3 eV with GGA, and is enhanced to 5.1 eV with the GW approximation, which reveals the importance of performing quasiparticle calculations in high energy density materials.

Thermoelectric properties of chalcopyrite type CuGaTe$_2$ and chalcostibite CuSbS$_2$

Electronic and transport properties of CuGaTe$_2$, a hole-doped ternary copper based chalcopyrite type semiconductor, are studied using calculations within the Density Functional Theory and solving the Boltzmann transport equation within the constant relaxation time approximation. The electronic bandstructures are calculated by means of the full-potential linear augmented plane wave method, using the Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson potential. The calculated band gap of 1.23 eV is in agreement with the experimental value of 1.2 eV. The carrier concentration- and temperature dependent thermoelectric properties of CuGaTe$_2$ are derived, and a figure of merit of $zT= 1.69$ is obtained at 950 K for a hole concentration of $3.7\cdot10^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$, in agreement with a recent experimental finding of $zT= 1.4$, confirming that CuGaTe$_2$ is a promising material for high temperature thermoelectric applications. The good thermoelectric performance of p-type CuGaTe$_2$ is associated with anisotropic transport from a combination of heavy and light bands. Also for CuSbS$_2$ (chalcostibite) a better performance is obtained for p-type than for n-type doping. The variation of the thermopower as a function of temperature and concentration suggests that CuSbS$_2$ will be a good thermoelectric material at low temperatures, similarly to the isostructural CuBiS$_2$ compound.

Thermoelectric properties of marcasite and pyrite FeX$_2$(X=Se,Te): A first principle study

Electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of marcasite (m) and synthetic pyrite (p) phases of FeX$_2$ (X=Se,Te) have been investigated using first principles density functional theory and Boltzmann transport equation. The plane wave pseudopotential approximation was used to study the structural properties and full-potential linear augmented plane wave method was used to obtain the electronic structure and thermoelectric properties (thermopower and power factor scaled by relaxation time). From total energy calculations we find that m-FeSe$_2$ and m-FeTe$_2$ are stable at ambient conditions and no structural transition from marcasite to pyrite is seen under the application of hydrostatic pressure. The calculated ground state structural properties agree quite well with available experiments. From the calculated thermoelectric properties, we find that both m and p forms are good candidates for thermoelectric applications. However, hole doped m-FeSe$_2$ appears to be the best among all the four systems.

{\it Ab-initio} study of structural and vibrational properties of KN$_3$ under pressure

Structural stability and vibrational properties of KN$_3$ have been studied under pressure using the first principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) as well as with semi empirical dispersion correction to the DFT to treat van der Waals interactions. The structural properties calculated through the dispersion correction are in good agreement with the experimental results when compared with the standard density functional theory. The lattice mode and the azide ion bending mode frequencies are found to be well reproduced by our calculations. As pressure increases, the E$_g$ mode gets softened as observed in the experiment. Despite the softening of E$_g$ mode, the enhancement of intramolecular interactions keeps the lattice stable.

A DFT study of structural, dynamical properties and quasiparticle band structure of solid nitromethane

We report a detailed theoretical study of the structural, vibrational, and optical properties of solid nitromethane using first principles density functional calculations. The ground state properties were calculated using a plane wave pseudopotential code with either the local density approximation (LDA), the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), or with a correction to include van derWaals interactions. Our calculated equilibrium lattice parameters and volume using a dispersion correction are found to be in reasonable agreement with the experimental results. Also, our calculations reproduce the experimental trends in the structural properties at high pressure. It was found to be a discontinuity in the bond length, bond angles and also a weaking of hydrogen bond strength in the pressure range from 10 to 12 GPa, picturing the structural transition from phase I to Phase II. Moreover, we predict the elastic constants of solid nitromethane and found that the corresponding bulk modulus is in good agreement with experiments. The calculated elastic constants are showing an order of C11> C22 > C33, indicating that the material is more compressible along the c-axis. We also calculated the zone center vibrational frequencies and discuss the internal and external modes of this material under pressure. From this, we found the softing of lattice modes around 8 to 12 GPa. We have also attempt the quasiparticle band structure of solid nitromethane with the G0W0 approximation and found that nitromethane is an indirect band gap insulator with a value of the band gap of about 7.8 eV with G0W0 approximation. Finally, the optical properties of this material, namely the absorptive and dispersive part of the dielectric function, and the refractive index and absorption spectra are calculated and the contribution of different transition peaks of the absorption spectra are analyzed.

Computational study of structural, electronic and optical properties of crystalline NH$_4$N$_3$

A systematic computational study on the structural, electronic, bonding, and optical properties of orthorhombic ammonium azide (NH$_4$N$_3$) has been performed using planewave pseudopotential (PW-PP) method based on density functional theory (DFT). Semiempirical dispersion correction schemes have been used to account for non-bonded interactions in molecular crystalline NH$_4$N$_3$. The ground state lattice parameters and fractional co-ordinates obtained using the dispersion correction schemes are in excellent agreement with experimental results. We calculated the single crystal elastic constants of NH$_4$N$_3$ and its sensitivity is interpreted through the observed ordering of the elastic constants (C$_{33}$ $>$ C$_{11}$ $>$ C$_{22}$). The electronic structure and optical properties were calculated using full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) approach with recently developed functional of Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson (TB-mBJ) potential. The TB-mBJ electronic structure shows that NH$_4$N$_3$ is a direct band gap insulator with a band gap of 5.08 eV, while the calculated band gap with standard generalized gradient approximation is found to be 4.10 eV. The optical anisotropy is analyzed through the calculated optical constants namely dielectric function and refractive index along three different crystallographic axes. The absorption spectra reveal that NH$_4$N$_3$ is sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light. Further, we also analyzed the detonation characteristics of the NH$_4$N$_3$ using the reported heat of formation and calculated density. NH$_4$N$_3$ is found to have a detonation velocity of 6.45 km/s and a detonation pressure about 15.16 GPa computed by Kamlet-Jacobs empirical equations.

Electronic topological transition in LaSn$_3$ under pressure

The electronic structure, Fermi surface and elastic properties of the iso-structural and iso-electronic LaSn$_3$ and YSn$_3$ intermetallic compounds are studied under pressure within the framework of density functional theory including spin-orbit coupling. The LaSn$_3$ Fermi surface consists of two sheets, of which the second is very complex. Under pressure a third sheet appears around compression $V/V_0=0.94$, while a small topology change in the second sheet is seen at compression $V/V_0=0.90$. This may be in accordance with the anomalous behaviour in the superconducting transition temperature observed in LaSn$_3$, which has been suggested to reflect a Fermi surface topological transition, along with a non-monotonic pressure dependence of the density of states at the Fermi level. The same behavior is not observed in YSn$_3$, the Fermi surface of which already includes three sheets at ambient conditions, and the topology remains unchanged under pressure. The reason for the difference in behaviour between LaSn$_3$ and YSn$_3$ is the role of spin-orbit coupling and the hybridization of La - $4f$ states with the Sn - $p$ states in the vicinity of the Fermi level, which is well explained using the band structure calculation. The elastic constants and related mechanical properties are calculated at ambient as well as at elevated pressures. The elastic constants increase with pressure for both compounds and satisfy the conditions for mechanical stability under pressure.

High Pressure Study of Lithium Azide from Density-Functional Calculations

The structural, electronic, optical and vibrational properties of LiN$_3$ under high pressure have been studied using plane wave pseudopotentials within the generalized gradient approximation for the exchange and correlation functional. The calculated lattice parameters agree quite well with experiments. The calculated bulk modulus value is found to be 23.23 GPa which is in good agreement with the experimental value of 20.5 GPa. Our calculations reproduce well the trends in high pressure behavior of the structural parameters. The present results show that the compressibility of LiN$_3$ crystal is anisotropic and the crystallographic b-axis is more compressible when compared to a- and c-axis which is also consistent with the experiment. The computed elastic constants clearly shows that LiN$_3$ is a mechanically stable system and the calculated elastic constants follows the order C$_{33}$ $>$ C$_{11}$ $>$ C$_{22}$ implies that the LiN$_3$ lattice is stiffer along c-axis and relatively weaker along b-axis. Under the application of pressure the magnitude of the electronic band gap value decreases, indicating that the system has the tendency to become semi conductor at high pressures. The optical properties such as refractive index, absorption spectra and photo conductivity along the three crystallographic directions have been calculated at ambient as well as at high pressures. The calculated refractive index shows that the system is optically anisotropic and the anisotropy increases with increase in pressure. The observed peaks in the absorption and photo conductivity spectra are found to shift towards the higher energy region as pressure increases which imply that in LiN$_3$ decomposition is favored under pressure with the action of light.

Phase Stability and Thermoelectric Properties of the Mineral FeS2: An Ab Initio Study

First principles calculations were carried out to study the phase stability and thermoelectric properties of the naturally occurring marcasite phase of FeS$_2$ at ambient condition as well as under pressure. Two distinct density functional approaches has been used to investigate the above mentioned properties. The plane wave pseudopotential approach was used to study the phase stability and structural, elastic, and vibrational properties. The full potential linear augment plane wave method has been used to study the electronic structure and thermoelectric properties. From the total energy calculations, it is clearly seen that marcasite FeS$_2$ is stable at ambient conditions, and it undergoes a first order phase transition to pyrite FeS$_2$ at around 3.7 GPa with a volume collapse of about 3$\%$. The calculated ground state properties such as lattice parameters, bond lengths and bulk modulus of marcasite FeS$_2$ agree quite well with the experiment. Apart from the above studies, phonon dispersion curves unambiguously indicate that marcasite phase is stable under ambient conditions. Further, we do not observe any phonon softening across the marcasite to pyrite transition and the possible reason driving the transition is also analyzed in the present study, which has not been attempted earlier. In addition, we have also calculated the electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of the both marcasite and pyrite FeS$_2$. We find a high thermopower for both the phases, especially with p-type doping, which enables us to predict that FeS$_2$ might find promising applications as good thermoelectric materials.

Pressure induced structural phase transition in solid oxidizer KClO$_3$: A first-principles study

High pressure behavior of potassium chlorate (KClO$_3$) has been investigated from 0-10 GPa by means of first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The calculated ground state parameters, transition pressure and phonon frequencies using semiempirical dispersion correction scheme are in excellent agreement with experiment. It is found that KClO$_3$ undergoes a pressure induced first order phase transition with an associated volume collapse of 6.4$\%$ from monoclinic (\emph{P2$_1$/m}) $\rightarrow$ rhombohedral (\emph{R3m}) structure at 2.26 GPa, which is in good accord with experimental observation. However, the transition pressure was found to underestimate (0.11 GPa) and overestimate (3.57 GPa) using LDA and GGA functionals, respectively. Mechanical stability of both the phases are explained from the calculated single crystal elastic constants. In addition, the zone center phonon frequencies have been calculated using density functional perturbation theory at ambient as well as at high pressure and the lattice modes are found to soften under pressure between 0.6 to 1.2 GPa. The present study reveals that the observed structural phase transition leads to changes in the decomposition mechanism of KClO$_3$ which corroborates with the experimental results.

Structure, elastic and dynamical properties of KN$_3$ and RbN$_3$: A van der Waals density functional study

We report a detailed first principles study on the structural, elastic, vibrational and thermodynamic properties of layered structure energetic alkali metal azides KN$_3$ and RbN$_3$. All the calculations were carried out by means of plane wave pseudopotential method with and without including van der Waals interactions. The calculated ground state structural properties are improved to a greater extent by the inclusion of dispersion corrections, implies that the van der Waals interactions play a major role on the physical properties of these systems. The elastic constants and the related bulk mechanical properties for the tetragonal KN$_3$ and RbN$_3$ have been calculated using both the methods and found that the compounds are mechanically stable systems. The magnitude of the calculated elastic constants increases in the order RbN$_3$ $<$ KN$_3$ implying higher elastic stiffness for KN$_3$, the fact also confirmed by the higher values of bulk, shear and Young's moduli of KN$_3$ than RbN$_3$. Moreover, the calculated elastic constants follows the inequality C$_{33}$ $<$ C$_{11}$ which indicates the presence of more number of intermolecular interactions along a-axis over c-axis of the azide lattices. A correlation has been proposed to relate the calculated elastic constants to the decomposition phenomena for the metal azides. The experimentally reported vibrational frequencies at the gamma point were exactly reproduced by the present calculations. In addition, we also present the thermodynamic properties such as heat capacity which compares well with the experiment.

Effect of van der Waals interactions on the structural and elastic properties of black phosphorus

The structural and elastic properties of orthorhombic black phosphorus have been investigated using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. The structural parameters have been calculated using the local density approximation (LDA), the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), and with several dispersion corrections to include van der Waals interactions. It is found that the dispersion corrections improve the lattice parameters over LDA and GGA in comparison with experimental results. The calculations reproduce well the experimental trends under pressure and show that van der Waals interactions are most important for the crystallographic b-axis, in the sense that they have the largest effect on the bonding between the phosphorus layers. The elastic constants are calculated and are found to be in good agreement with experimental values. The calculated C$_{22}$ elastic constant is significantly larger than the C$_{11}$ and C$_{33}$ parameters, implying that black phosphorus is stiffer against strain along the a-axis than along the b- and c-axes. From the calculated elastic constants, the mechanical properties such as bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio are obtained. The calculated Raman active optical phonon frequencies and their pressure variations are in excellent agreement with available experimental results.

Quantum chemical studies on beryllium hydride oligomers

The present study explores electronic and structural properties, ionization potential (IP), electron affinity (EA), polarizability (α), chemical potential (μ), hardness (η), softness (S), band gap (ΔE(HOMO-LUMO)) and spectral characteristics of beryllium hydride oligomers by quantum chemical treatment. The discrepancies in the calculated reactive descriptors of molecules are presumably due to variations in electron distribution and spin pairing near Fermi level. The molecules BeH2, Be3H5, Be5H10, Be7H14 and Be9H18 have been found to be more stable than Be2H4, Be4H8, Be6H12, Be8H16 and Be10H20. Ultra-soft pseudopotentials for electron-nuclei interactions with local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA) have been used to understand the nature of bonding in crystalline beryllium hydride. The observed band gap value of crystalline BeH2 is comparable with the band gap value of beryllium hydride oligomers

Density functional study of elastic and vibrational properties of the Heusler-type alloys Fe$_2$VAl and Fe$_2$VGa

The structural and elastic properties as well as phonon-dispersion relations of the Heusler-type alloys Fe$_2$VAl and Fe$_2$VGa are computed using density-functional and density-functional perturbation theory within the generalized-gradient approximation. The calculated equilibrium lattice constants agree well with the experimental values. The elastic constants of Fe$_2$VAl and Fe$_2$VGa are predicted for the first time. From the elastic constants the shear modulus, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, sound velocities and Debye temperatures are obtained. By analyzing the ratio between the bulk and shear modulii, we conclude that both Fe$_2$VAl and Fe$_2$VGa are brittle in nature. The computed phonon-dispersion relation shows that both compounds are dynamically stable in the L1$_2$ structure without any imaginary phonon frequencies. The isomer shifts of Fe in the two compounds are discussed in terms of the Fe s partial density of states, which reveal larger ionicity/less hybridization in Fe$_2$VGa than in Fe$_2$VAl. For the same reason the Cauchy pressure is negative in Fe$_2$VAl but positive in Fe$_2$VGa

High pressure structural study of fluoro perovskite CsCdF3 upto 60 GPa: A combined experimental and theoretical study

The structural behaviour of CsCdF3 under pressure is investigated by means of theory and experiment. High-pressure powder x-ray diffraction experiments were performed up to a maximum pressure of 60 GPa using synchrotron radiation. The cubic $Pm\bar{3}m$ crystal symmetry persists throughout this pressure range. Theoretical calculations were carried out using the full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method within the local density approximation and the generalized gradient approximation for exchange and correlation effects. The calculated ground state properties -- the equilibrium lattice constant, bulk modulus and elastic constants -- are in good agreement with experimental results. Under ambient conditions, CsCdF3 is an indirect gap insulator with the gap increasing under pressure.
