Diffusive photospheres in gamma-ray bursts

Photospheric emission may originate from relativistic outflows in two qualitatively different regimes:\ last scattering of photons inside the outflow at the photospheric radius, or radiative diffusion to the boundary of the outflow. In this work the measurement of temperature and flux of the thermal component in the early afterglows of several gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) along with the total flux in the prompt phase are used to determine initial radii of the outflow as well as its Lorentz factors. Results indicate that in some cases the outflow has relatively low Lorentz factors $Γ<10$, favouring cocoon interpretation, while in other cases Lorentz factors are larger $Γ>10$, indicating diffusive photospheric origin of the thermal component, associated with an ultrarelativistic outflow.

Pauli blocking effects in thermalization of relativistic plasma

We investigate the effects of Pauli blocking on thermalization process of relativistic plasma by solving relativistic Uehling-Uhlenbeck equations with QED collision integral for all binary and triple processes. With this purpose we consider nonequilibrium initial state of plasma to be strongly degenerate. We found that when electron-positron annihilation is active, initial plasma degeneracy is quickly destroyed. As a result in a wide range of final temperatures ranging from nonrelativistic to mildly relativistic $0.1 m_e c^2 \leq k_B T\leq 10 m_e c^2$ thermalization is not affected by Pauli blocking. Conversely, when electron-positron annihilation process is inactive, thermalization process in such degenerate plasma is strongly affected by Pauli blocking. This is possible either in a nonrelativistic plasma, with equilibrium temperature $k_B T\leq 0.3 m_e c^2$, or in photon-electron plasma. In these cases all reaction rates are strongly suppressed by Pauli blocking and thermalization does not occur until electrons can populate energy states above the Fermi energy. Soon after this happens thermalization proceeds suddenly in an avalanche-like process.

Bose-Einstein condensation in relativistic plasma

The phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation is traditionally associated with and experimentally verified for low temperatures: either of nano-Kelvin scale for alkali atoms [1-3] or room temperatures for quasi-particles [4,5] or photons in two dimensions [6]. Here we demonstrate out of first principles that for certain initial conditions non-equilibrium plasma at relativistic temperatures of billions of Kelvin undergoes condensation, predicted by Zeldovich and Levich in their seminal work [7]. We determine the necessary conditions for the onset of condensation and discuss the possibilities to observe such a phenomenon in laboratory and astrophysical conditions.

Transparency of an instantaneously created electron-positron-photon plasma

The problem of the expansion of a relativistic plasma generated when a large amount of energy is released in a small volume has been considered by many authors. We use the analytical solution of Bisnovatyi-Kogan and Murzina (1995) for the spherically symmetric relativistic expansion. The light-curves and the spectra from transparency of an electron-positron-photon plasma are obtained. We compare our results with the work of Goodman (1986).

Comptonization of photons near the photosphere of relativistic outflows

We consider the formation of photon spectrum at the photosphere of ultrarelativistically expanding outflow. We use the Fokker-Planck approximation to the Boltzmann equation, and obtain the generalized Kompaneets equation which takes into account anisotropic distribution of photons developed near the photosphere. This equation is solved numerically for relativistic steady wind and the observed spectrum is found in agreement with previous studies. We also study the photospheric emission for different temperature dependences on radius in such outflows. In particular, we found that for $T\propto r^{-2}$ the Band low energy photon index of the observed spectrum is $α\simeq -1$, as typically observed in Gamma Ray Bursts.

Monte Carlo simulations of the photospheric emission in GRBs

We studied the decoupling of photons from ultra-relativistic spherically symmetric outflows expanding with constant velocity by means of Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation. For outflows with finite width we confirm the existence of two regimes: photon thick and photon thin introduced recently by Ruffini, Siutsou, Vereshchagin (2011), hereafter RSV. The probability density function of photon last scattering is shown to be very different in these two cases. We also obtained spectra as well as light curves. In photon thick case, the time integrated spectrum is much broader than the Planck function and its shape is well described by the fuzzy photosphere approximation introduced by RSV. In the photon thin case we confirm the crucial role of photon diffusion, hence the probability density of decoupling has a maximum near the diffusion radius, well below the photosphere. Its spectrum has Band shape. It is produced when the outflow is optically thick and its peak is formed at diffusion radius.

Spreading of ultrarelativistically expanding shell: an application to GRBs

Optically thick energy dominated plasma created in the source of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) expands radially with acceleration and forms a shell with constant width measured in the laboratory frame. When strong Lorentz factor gradients are present within the shell it is supposed to spread at sufficiently large radii. There are two possible mechanisms of spreading: hydrodynamical and thermal ones. We consider both mechanisms evaluating the amount of spreading that occurs during expansion up to the moment when the expanding shell becomes transparent for photons. We compute the hydrodynamical spreading of an ultrarelativistically expanding shell. In the case of thermal spreading we compute the velocity spread as a function of two parameters: comoving temperature and bulk Lorentz factor of relativistic Maxwellian distribution. Based on this result we determine the value of thermal spreading of relativistically expanding shell. We found that thermal spreading is negligible for typical GRB parameters. Instead hydrodynamical spreading appears to be significant, with the shell width reaching $\sim10^{10}$ cm for total energy $E=10^{54}$ erg and baryonic loading $B=10^{-2}$. Within the fireshell model such spreading will result in the duration of Proper Gamma-Ray Bursts up to several seconds.

Theory of photospheric emission from relativistic outflows

In this paper we reexamine the optical depth of ultrarelativistic spherically symmetric outflows and reevaluate the photospheric radius for each model during both the acceleration and coasting phases. It is shown that for both the wind and the shell models there are two asymptotic solutions for the optical depth during the coasting phase of the outflow. In particular we show that quite counterintuitively a geometrically thin shell may appear as a thick wind for photons propagating inside it. For this reason we introduce notions of photon thick and photon thin outflows, which appear more general and better physically motivated with respect to winds and shells. Photosphere of relativistic outflow is a dynamic surface. We study its geometry and find that the photosphere of photon thin outflow has always a convex shape, while in the photon thick one it is initially convex (there is always a photon thin layer in any outflow) and then it becomes concave asymptotically approaching the photosphere of an infinitely long wind. We find that both instantaneous and time integrated observed spectra are very close to the thermal one for photon thick outflows, in line with existing studies. It is our main finding that the photospheric emission from the photon thin outflow produces non thermal time integrated spectra, which may be described by the Band function well known in the GRB literature. We find that energetic GRBs should produce photon thin outflows with photospheric emission lasting less than one second for the total energy $E_0\leq10^{54}$ erg and baryonic loading parameter $B\leq10^{-2}$. It means that only time integrated spectra may be observed from such GRBs.

On the frequency of oscillations in the pair plasma generated by a strong electric field

We study the frequency of the plasma oscillations of electron-positron pairs created by the vacuum polarization in an uniform electric field with strength E in the range 0.2 Ec < E < 10 Ec. Following the approach adopted in [1] we work out one second order ordinary differential equation for a variable related to the velocity from which we can recover the classical plasma oscillation equation when E -> 0. Thereby, we focus our attention on its evolution in time studying how this oscillation frequency approaches the plasma frequency. The time-scale needed to approach to the plasma frequency and the power spectrum of these oscillations are computed. The characteristic frequency of the power spectrum is determined uniquely from the initial value of the electric field strength. The effects of plasma degeneracy and pair annihilation are discussed.

Pair plasma relaxation time scales

By numerically solving the relativistic Boltzmann equations, we compute the time scale for relaxation to thermal equilibrium for an optically thick electron-positron plasma with baryon loading. We focus on the time scales of electromagnetic interactions. The collisional integrals are obtained directly from the corresponding QED matrix elements. Thermalization time scales are computed for a wide range of values of both the total energy density (over 10 orders of magnitude) and of the baryonic loading parameter (over 6 orders of magnitude). This also allows us to study such interesting limiting cases as the almost purely electron-positron plasma or electron-proton plasma as well as intermediate cases. These results appear to be important both for laboratory experiments aimed at generating optically thick pair plasmas as well as for astrophysical models in which electron-positron pair plasmas play a relevant role.

Cosmological models with Gurzadyan-Xue dark energy

The formula for dark energy density derived by Gurzadyan and Xue provides a value of density parameter of dark energy in remarkable agreement with current cosmological datasets, unlike numerous phenomenological dark energy scenarios where the corresponding value is postulated. This formula suggests the possibility of variation of physical constants such as the speed of light and the gravitational constant. Considering several cosmological models based on that formula and deriving the cosmological equations for each case, we show that, in all models source terms appear in the continuity equation. So, one one hand, GX models make up a rich set covering a lot of currently proposed models of dark energy, on the other hand, they reveal hidden symmetries, with a particular role of the separatrix $Ω_m=2/3$, and link with the issue of the content of physical constants.

Hidden invariance in Gurzadyan-Xue cosmological models

The dark energy formula derived by Gurzadyan and Xue which leads to a value fitting the SN data, provides a scaling relation between the physical constants and cosmological parameters and defines a set of cosmological models. In previous works we have considered several of those models and derived the cosmological equations for each case. In this letter, we present the phase portrait analysis of those models. Surprisingly we found, first, that the separatrix in the phase space which determines the character of solutions depends solely on the value of the current matter density. Namely, at $Ω_m>2/3$ the equations describe Friedmannian Universe with the classical singularity at the beginning. While at $Ω_m<2/3$ all solutions for all models start with zero density and non vanishing scale factor. Secondly, more remarkable, the value $Ω_{sep}=2/3$ defining the separatrix is the same for all models, which reveales an underlying invariance hidden in the models, possibly, due to the basic nature of the GX-scaling.

Physical constants and the Gurzadyan-Xue formula for the dark energy

We consider cosmological implications of the formula for the dark energy density derived by Gurzadyan and Xue which predicts a value fitting the observational one. Cosmological models with varying by time physical constants, namely, speed of light and gravitational constant and/or their combinations, are considered. In one of the models, for example, vacuum energy density induces effective negative curvature, while another one has an unusual asymptotic. This analysis also explicitely rises the issue of the meaning and content of physical units and constants in cosmological context.
