Deuteron Electromagnetic Properties with a Poincaré-Covariant Current Operator within Front-Form Hamiltonian Dynamics

Deuteron elastic and deep inelastic electromagnetic properties have been studied within the front-form Hamiltonian dynamics, using a Poincaré-covariant current operator. The deuteron elastic form factors are strongly sensitive to different realistic $N-N$ interactions, while the relevance of different nucleon form factor models is huge for $A(Q^2)$, weak for $B(Q^2)$ and negligible for the tensor polarization. The possibility to gain information on the neutron charge form factor from an analysis of $A(Q^2)$ has been investigated. The extraction of the neutron structure functions from the deuteron deep inelastic structure functions at high $x$ is largely affected by the use of our Poincaré-covariant relativistic approach instead of the usual impulse approximation within an instant-form approach.

A Poincaré Covariant Current Operator for Deep Inelastic Structure Functions and Deuteron Electromagnetic Properties

In front-form dynamics the current operator can be constructed from auxiliary operators, defined in a Breit frame where initial and final three-momenta of the system are directed along the $z$ axis. Poincaré covariance constraints reduce for auxiliary operators to the ones imposed only by kinematical rotations around the $z$ axis. Elastic and transition form factors can be extracted without any ambiguity and in the elastic case the continuity equation is automatically satisfied, once Poincaré, ${\cal P}$ and ${\cal T}$ covariance, together with hermiticity, are imposed. Applications to deep inelastic structure functions in an exactly solvable model and to the calculation of the deuteron electromagnetic form factors are presented.

A Poincaré Covariant Current Operator for Low and High Energy Phenomena

Within front-form dynamics and in the Breit frame where initial and final three-momenta of the system are directed along the $z$ axis, Poincaré covariance constrains the current operator only through kinematical rotations around the $z$ axis. Therefore, in this frame the current can be taken in the one-body form. Applications to deep inelastic structure functions in an exactly solvable model and to the deuteron magnetic form factor are presented.

Electromagnetic and weak current operators for interacting systems within the front-form dynamics

Electromagnetic and weak current operators for interacting systems should properly commute with the Poincaré generators and satisfy Hermiticity. The electromagnetic current should also satisfy ${\cal P}$ and ${\cal T}$ covariance and continuity equation. We show that in front-form dynamics the current can be constructed from auxiliary operators, defined in a Breit frame where initial and final three-momenta of the system are directed along the $z$ axis. Poincaré covariance constraints reduce for auxiliary operators to the ones imposed only by kinematical rotations around the $z$ axis; while Hermiticity requires a suitable behaviour of the auxiliary operators under rotations by $π$ around the $x$ or $y$ axes. Applications to deep inelastic structure functions and electromagnetic form factors are discussed. Elastic and transition form factors can be extracted without any ambiguity and in the elastic case the continuity equation is automatically satisfied, once Poincaré, ${\cal P}$ and ${\cal T}$ covariance, together with Hermiticity, are imposed.

Nucleon generalized polarizabilities within a relativistic Constituent Quark Model

Nucleon generalized polarizabilities are investigated within a relativistic framework, defining such quantities through a Lorentz covariant multipole expansion of the amplitude for virtual Compton scattering. The key physical ingredients in the calculation of the nucleon polarizabilities are the Lorentz invariant reduced matrix elements of the electromagnetic transition current, which can be evaluated from off-energy-shell helicity amplitudes. The evolution of the proton paramagnetic polarizability, $β_{para}(q)$, as a function of the virtual-photon three-momentum transfer $ q,$ is explicitly evaluated within a relativistic constituent quark model by adopting transition form factors obtained in the light-front formalism. The discussion is focussed on the role played by the effects due to the relativistic approach and to the transition form factors, derived within different models.
