Nonlinear study of local ballooning mode near the separatrix

Small edge-localized-mode (ELM), similar to the quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE), has been achieved by increasing the density at the separatrix. Starting from the Type-I ELM experimental data in EAST, we have performed a numerical separatrix density scan to study the formation of the small ELM using BOUT++ 6-field 2-fluid module. In the high separatrix density case, localized collapse near the separatrix has been found. The corresponding ELM size, dominant mode number, and filament transport match the experimental observations of the QCE. Local ballooning mode near separatrix has been identified in the nonlinear simulation. The mode is driven by the local pressure gradient and the mode structure is constrained by the ExB shear.

Resonance model study of kaon production in baryon baryon reactions for heavy ion collisions

The energy dependence of the total kaon production cross sections in baryon baryon ($N$ and $Δ$) collisions are studied in the resonance model, which is a relativistic, tree-level treatment. This study is the first attempt to complete a systematic, consistent investigation of the elementary kaon production reactions for both the pion baryon and baryon baryon reactions. Our model suggests that the magnitudes of the isospin-averaged total cross sections for the $N N \to N Y K$ and $ΔN \to N Y K$ ($Y = Λ$ or $Σ$) reactions are almost equal at energies up to about 200 MeV above threshold. However, the magnitudes for the $ΔN$ reactions become about 6 times larger than those for the $N N$ reactions at energies about 1 GeV above threshold. Furthermore, the magnitudes of the isospin-averaged total cross sections for the $N N \to ΔY K$ reactions turn out to be comparable to those for the $N N \to N Y K$ reactions at $N N$ invariant collision energies about 3.1 GeV, and about 5 to 10 times larger at $N N$ invariant collision energies about 3.5 GeV. The microscopic cross sections are parametrized in all isospin channels necessary for the transport model studies of kaon production in heavy ion collisions. These cross sections are then applied in the relativistic transport model to study the sensitivity to the underlying elementary kaon production cross sections.

Intermediate-mass dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions at 200A GeV

Through the analysis of HELIOS-3 data obtained at the CERN SPS, we demonstrate the importance of secondary processes for dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions in the intermediate invariant mass region. We find that while the dilepton spectra between 1 to 2.5 GeV from proton-induced reactions can be attributed to the decay of primary vector mesons, charmed hadrons, and initial Drell-Yan processes; the strong enhancement seen in the heavy-ion data as compared to the background comes mainly from the secondary processes which are germane to heavy-ion collisions. Furthermore, we find $πa_1\to l{\bar l}$ to be the most important process in this mass region, as was found by thermal rate calculations. We emphasize the constraints on the elementary cross sections by the experimental data from $e^+e^-$ annihilation.

Intermediate mass dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions at SPS energies

Through the analysis of HELIOS-3 data on dilepton spectra, we demonstrate the importance of secondary processes for the dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions in the intermediate mass region. We find that, while the dilepton spectra in proton-induced reactions can be nicely explained by the decay of primary vector mesons, charmed hadrons, and initial Drell-Yan processes, the strong enhancement seen in the heavy-ion data comes mainly from the secondary meson-meson interactions which are unique to heavy-ion collisions.

Dilepton production in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at SPS energies

Dilepton production in proton- and nucleus-induced reactions is studied in relativistic transport model using initial conditions determined by the string dynamics from RQMD. It is found that both the CERES and HELIOS-3 data for dilepton spectra in proton-nucleus reactions can be well described by the `conventional' mechanism of Dalitz decay and direct vector meson decay. However, to provide a quantitative explanation of the observed dilepton spectra in central S+Au and S+W collisions requires contributions other than these direct decays. Introducing a decrease of vector meson masses in hot and dense medium, we find that these heavy-ion data can also be satisfactorily explained. This agrees with our earlier conclusions based on a fire cylinder model. We also give predictions for Pb+Au collisions at 160 GeV/nucleon using current CERES mass resolution and acceptance.

Kaon production cross sections from baryon-baryon interactions

In a one-pion plus one-kaon exchange model, we calculate the kaon production cross sections in nucleon-nucleon, nucleon-delta and delta-delta interactions. We find that this model describes reasonably well the experimental data on kaon production in the proton-proton interaction. Near the kaon production threshold, the cross section obtained from this model is smaller than that from the linear parameterization of Randrup and Ko. For kaon production cross sections from the nucleon-delta and delta-delta interactions, the cross sections are singular in free space, so we calculate them in a nuclear medium by including the (complex) pion self-energy. The results are compared with the scaling ansatz of Randrup and Ko. The theoretical cross sections are then used in a transport model to study kaon production from Au+Au collisions at 1 GeV/nucleon.

Mean field effects in heavy-ion collisions at AGS energies

The question whether mean field effects exist in heavy-ion collisions at AGS energies is studied in the framework of A Relativistic Transport (ART) model. It is found that in central collisions of Au+Au at $P_{beam}/A=$11.6 GeV/c a simple, Skyrme-type nuclear mean field satisfying the causality requirement reduces the maximum baryon and energy densities reached in the cascade model by about 30\% and 40\%, respectively. The mean field affects the inclusive, single particle observables of various hadrons by at most 20\%. We show, however, that the mean field causes a factor of 2.5 increase in the strength of the baryon transverse collective flow.

Kaon flow as a probe of the kaon potential in nuclear medium

The flow of kaons, i.e., the average kaon transverse momentum as a function of rapidity, and the associated flow parameter in heavy-ion collisions at SIS/GSI energies is investigated in the relativistic transport model. It is found that the pattern of kaon flow at the final stage is sensitive to the kaon potential used in the model and is thus a useful probe of the kaon potential in a nuclear medium.
