Investigation of the lead-free double perovskites Cs2AgSbX6 (X= Cl, Br, I) for optoelectronic and thermoelectric applications

Perovskite compounds have the potential to harvest solar energy as well as exploit the thermoelectric potential of a number of available materials. Here, we present the electronic, structural, thermoelectric, and optical properties of Cs2AgSbX6 (X = Cl, Br, I) perovskite with the help of the density functional theory (DFT). The WC-GGA approximation was used to calculate the structural parameters. All these compounds crystalize in a cubic unit cell with lattice constant increasing from 10.65 Å (Cl) to 11.14 Å (Br) to 11.86 Å (I). The mBJ-functional shows a semiconducting nature for these compounds with an indirect band gap lying at the L-X symmetry points. The optical conductivity and absorption coefficient show their peaks in the ultraviolet region, moving towards a lower energy range by inserting large size anion. The band gap of these compounds (2.08, 1.37, 0.64 eV) indicates their potential in single and multijunction solar cells. The value of refractive index at zero energy was evaluated to be 3.1, 2.2, and 1.97 for Cs2AgSbCl6, Cs2AgSbBr6 and Cs2AgSbI6. Effective mass of electrons is smaller than those of holes resulting in higher carrier mobility for electrons. The Seebeck coefficient, power factor, and the figure of merit were computed using the BoltzTrap code. The negative temperature coefficient of resistivity also supports the semiconductor nature of these compounds. The high electrical, small thermal conductivity, positive Seebeck coefficient, and the optimum figure of merit make these compounds suitable for thermoelectric applications.

To study the structural, electronic and optical properties of predicted stable halide perovskites ABX3

Structure, optical and electronic properties of predicted stables Perovskites ABX3 are calculated using DFT approach. The modified Becke-Johnson potential is also used to investigate electrical and optical properties. The density of states and electronic band structure calculations reveal that the predicted stable halides Perovskites ABX3 have a direct as well as indirect band gap, with dielectric function, optical reflectivity, absorption coefficient, optical conductivity, extinction coefficient, refractive index are calculated in different ranges of energy. The maximum value of static dielectric function is observed for KNiI3 and RbIrBr3 are 3.5 and 3 respectively. The highest absorption peak among the all is observed at 26eV for SrLiF3, while refractive index of that SrLiF3 gives peak at 24eV then refractive index decreases below the unity as energy increases up to 27.5eV. The maximum peaks of optical conductivity of predicted stables halides Perovskites are observed in visible to ultraviolet range (1.7eV to 30eV). The maximum peaks of optical conductivity are observed for SrLiF3 at 24eV. For the first time, all of the properties evaluated for predicted stable halides ABX3Perovskites are reported, because no theoretical work is reported yet on most of the physical properties.

Computational Study of Defect variant Perovskites A2BX6 for Photovoltaic Applications

A comprehensive study of the structural, electronic, and optical properties of lead-free perovskites has been carried out by means of first principles method based on DFT. The calculations are performed for the compound of the type A2BX6 with A=Rb, and Cs; B=Sn, Pd, and Pt; and X=Cl, Br, and I. The calculated structural parameters (lattice constants and bond lengths) agree well with the experiments. The computed band gap reveals a semiconducting profile for all these compounds showing a decreasing trend of the band gap energy by changing the halide ions consecutively from Cl to Br and Br to I. However, for variation in the B-site cation, the band gap increases by changing the cation from Pd to Pt via Sn. The most likely compounds, Rb2PdBr6 and Cs2PtI6, exhibit a band gap within the optimal range of 0.9-1.6 eV for single-junction photovoltaic applications. The optical properties in terms of the optimal value of the dielectric constant, optical conductivity, and absorption coefficient are also investigated upto the photon energy of 10 eV. Our results indicate that upon changing the halogen ions (Cl by Br and Br by I) the optical properties altered significantly. Maximum dielectric constants and high optical absorption are found for Rb2PdI6 and Cs2PtI6. The unique optoelectronic properties such as ideal band gap, high dielectric constants, and optimum absorption of A2BX6 perovskites could be efficiently utilized in designing high performance single and multi-junction perovskite solar cells.

Shocklets in the Comet Halley Plasma

Dust acoustic (DA) waves evolving into shocklets are investigated in the Comet Halley plasma system relaxing to Maxwellian, Kappa and Cairns distributions. Here dynamics of dust is described by the fully nonlinear continuity and momentum equations. A set of two characteristic wave nonlinear equations is obtained and numerically solved to examine the DA solitary pulse which develops into oscillatory shocklets with the course of time such as at time τ=0, symmetric solitary pulses are formed, which develop into oscillatory shocklets. It has been observed that variation in superthermality strongly affects the profiles of nonlinear DA structures in terms of negative potential, dust velocity and density.

Whistler instability in a semi-relativistic bi-Maxwellian plasma

Employing linearized Vlasov-Maxwell system, the Weibel instability embedded in an ambient magnetic field is discussed for a semi-relativistic bi-Maxwellian distribution hoping such a scenario occurs in some relativistic environments e.g., gamma-ray burst sources and relativistic jet sources, supernovae, and galactic cosmic rays where the perpendicular temperature is much dominated over the parallel . The dispersion relations are analyzed analytically along with the graphical representation and the estimates of the growth rate are presented along with the instability threshold condition in the limiting cases i.e., xi<=1 (resonant case) and xi>>1 (non-resonant case). It is observed that the relativistic effect suppresses the instability and also lowers the threshold for the instability to set in. The ambient magnetic field contribution to instability appears only in non-resonant case resulting in reduction of growth rate. However, the effect of the ambient magnetic field is diminished as we go from the weak relativistic regime to the highly relativistic one. We also note that the ambient magnetic field generates real oscillations and the reletivistic effect reduces these oscillations. Further for field free case i.e., B0=0, the growth rates for Weibel instabilities are also presented in a semi-relativistic bi- Maxwellian plasma for both the limiting cases.

Effect of temperature anisotropy on various modes and instabilities for a magnetized non-relativistic bi-Maxwellian plasma

Using kinetic theory for homogeneous collisionless magnetized plasmas, we present an extended review of the plasma waves and instabilities and discuss the anisotropic response of generalized relativistic dielectric tensor and Onsager symmetry properties for arbitrary distribution functions. In general, we observe that for such plasmas only those electromagnetic modes whose magnetic field perturbations are perpendicular to the ambient magneticeld, i.e.,B1 \perp B0, are effected by the anisotropy. However, in oblique propagation all modes do show such anisotropic effects. Considering the non-relativistic bi-Maxwellian distribution and studying the relevant components of the general dielectric tensor under appropriate conditions, we derive the dispersion relations for various modes and instabilities. We show that only the electromagnetic R- and L- waves, those derived from them and the O-mode are affected by thermal anisotropies, since they satisfy the required condition B1\perpB0. By contrast, the perpendicularly propagating X-mode and the modes derived from it (the pure transverse X-mode and Bernstein mode) show no such effect. In general, we note that the thermal anisotropy modifies the parallel propagating modes via the parallel acoustic effect, while it modifies the perpendicular propagating modes via the Larmor-radius effect. In oblique propagation for kinetic Alfven waves, the thermal anisotropy affects the kinetic regime more than it affects the inertial regime. The generalized fast mode exhibits two distinct acoustic effects, one in the direction parallel to the ambient magnetic field and the other in the direction perpendicular to it. In the fast-mode instability, the magneto-sonic wave causes suppression of the firehose instability. We discuss all these propagation characteristics and present graphic illustrations.

Bandgap engineering of Cd1-xSrxO

Structural, electronic and optical properties of Cd1-xSrxO (0 \leq x \leq 1) are calculated for the first time using density functional theory. Our results show that these properties are strongly dependent on x. The bond between Cd and O is partially covalent and the covalent nature of the bond decreases as the concentration of Sr increases from 0 to 100%. It is found that Cd1-xSrxO is an indirect bandgap compound for the entire range of x and the bandgap of the alloy increases from 0.85 to 6.00 eV with the increase in Sr concentration. Frequency dependent dielectric functions ε1(ω), ε2(ω), refractive index n(ω) and absorption coefficient α(ω) are also calculated and discussed in details. The peak value of refractive indices shifts to higher energy regions with the increase in Sr. The striking feature of these alloys is that Cd0.5Sr0.5O is an anisotropic material. The larger value of the extraordinary refractive index confirms that the material is positive birefringence crystal. The present comprehensive theoretical study of the optoelectronic properties of the material predicts that it can be effectively used in optoelectronic applications in the wide range of spectrum; IR, visible and UV.

Linear and non-linear optical response of Mg(x)Zn(1-x)O: A Density Functional study

Total and partial density of states, frequency dependent complex refractive index including extinction coefficient, optical conductivity and transmission of MgxZn1-xO (0 \leq x \leq 1) in rocksalt and wurtzite phases are calculated using full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method. The real part of refractive index decreases while the extinction coefficient, optical conductivity and transmission for rocksalt phase increases with the increase in Mg concentration. In wurtzite phase, ordinary and extraordinary indices decreases while extinction coefficient, optical conductivity and transmission increases in parallel as well as perpendicular to c-axis with the increase in the Mg concentration.

Investigation of structural and optoelectronic properties of BaThO3

Structural and optoelectronic properties of BaThO3 cubic perovskite are calculated using all electrons full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method. Wide and direct band gap, 5.7 eV, of the compound predicts that it can be effectively used in UV based optoelectronic devices. Different characteristic peaks in the wide UV range emerges mainly due to the transition of electrons between valance band state O-p and conduction band states Ba-d, Ba-f, Th-f and Th-d.

New Longitudinal Waves in Electron-Positron-Ion Quantum Plasmas

A general quantum dispersion equation for electron-positron(hole)-ion quantum plasmas is derived and studied for some interesting cases. In an electron-positron degenerate Fermi gas, with or without the Madelung term, a new type of zero sound waves are found. Whereas in an electron-hole plasmas a new longitudinal quantum waves are revealed, which have no analogies in quantum electron-ion plasmas. The excitation of these quantum waves by a low-density monoenergetic straight electron beam is examined. Furthermore, the KdV equation for novel quantum waves is derived and the contribution of the Madelung term in the formation of the KdV solitons is discussed.
