$Λ_c^{\pm}$ production in pp collisions with a new fragmentation function

We study inclusive $Λ_c^{\pm}$-baryon production in $pp$ collisions in the general-mass variable-flavor number scheme and compare with data from the LHCb, ALICE and CMS collaborations. We perform a new fit of the $c \to Λ_c^+$ fragmentation function combining $e^+e^-$ data from OPAL and Belle. The agreement with LHC data is slightly worse compared with a calculation using an older fragmentation function, and the tension between different determinations of $Λ_c^{\pm}$ production cross sections from the LHC experimental collaborations is not resolved. The ratio of data for $Λ_c^+$-baryon and $D^0$-meson production seems to violate the universality of $c$-charm quark to $c$-hadron fragmentation.

Formation of Lunar Swirls

In this paper we show a plausible mechanism that could lead to the formation of the Dark Lanes in Lunar Swirls, and the electromagnetic shielding of the lunar surface that results in the preservation of the white colour of the lunar regolith. We present the results of a fully self-consistent 2 and 3 dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of mini-magnetospheres that form above the lunar surface and show that they are consistent with the formation of `lunar swirls' such as the archetypal formation Reiner Gamma. The simulations show how the microphysics of the deflection/shielding of plasma operates from a kinetic-scale cavity, and show that this interaction leads to a footprint with sharp features that could be the mechanism behind the generation of `dark lanes'. The physics of mini-magnetospheres is described and shown to be controlled by space-charge fields arising due to the magnetized electrons and unmagnetized ions. A comparison between model and observation is shown for a number of key plasma parameters.

Inclusive B-meson production at small p_T in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme

We calculate the cross section for the inclusive production of B mesons in pp and ppbar collisions at next-to-leading order in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme and show that a suitable choice of factorization scales leads to a smooth transition to the fixed-flavor-number scheme. Our numerical results are in good agreement with data from the Tevatron and LHC experiments at small and at large transverse momenta.

Inclusive photoproduction of bottom quarks for low and medium pT in the general-mass variable-flavour-number scheme

We present predictions for b-quark production in photoprodcution and compare with experimental data from HERA. Our theoretical predictions are obtained at next-to-leading-order in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme, an approach which takes into account the finite mass of the b quarks. We use realistic evolved nonperturbative fragmentation functions obtained from fits to e+e- data. We find in general good agreement of data with both the GM-VFNS and the FFNS calculations, while the more precise ZEUS data seem to prefer the GM-VFNS predictions.

NNLO contributions to inclusive-jet production in DIS and determination of α_s

We present the first calculation of inclusive jet production in deep-inelastic scattering with approximate next-to-next-to-leading order (aNNLO) contributions, obtained from a unified threshold resummation formalism. The leading coefficients are computed analytically. We show that the aNNLO contributions reduce the theoretical prediction for jet production in deep-inelastic scattering, improve the description of the final HERA data in particular at high photon virtuality Q^2 and increase the central fit value of the strong coupling constant.

NLO Monte Carlo predictions for heavy-quark production at the LHC: pp collisions in ALICE

Next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD predictions for the production of heavy quarks in proton-proton collisions are presented within three different approaches to quark mass, resummation and fragmentation effects. In particular, new NLO and parton shower simulations with POWHEG are performed in the ALICE kinematic regime at three different centre-of-mass energies, including scale and parton density variations, in order to establish a reliable baseline for future detailed studies of heavy-quark suppression in heavy-ion collisions. Very good agreement of POWHEG is found with FONLL, in particular for centrally produced D^0, D^+ and D^*+ mesons and electrons from charm and bottom quark decays, but also with the generally somewhat higher GM-VFNS predictions within the theoretical uncertainties. The latter are dominated by scale rather than quark mass variations. Parton density uncertainties for charm and bottom quark production are computed here with POWHEG for the first time and shown to be dominant in the forward regime, e.g. for muons coming from heavy-flavour decays. The fragmentation into D_s^+ mesons seems to require further tuning within the NLO Monte Carlo approach.

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN

This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts. The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing, accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in deep inelastic scattering. Illustrations are provided regarding high precision QCD, new physics (Higgs, SUSY) and electron-ion physics. The LHeC is designed to run synchronously with the LHC in the twenties and to achieve an integrated luminosity of O(100) fb$^{-1}$. It will become the cleanest high resolution microscope of mankind and will substantially extend as well as complement the investigation of the physics of the TeV energy scale, which has been enabled by the LHC.

NNLO contributions to jet photoproduction and determination of α_s

We present the first calculation of inclusive jet photoproduction with next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) contributions, obtained from a unified threshold resummation formalism. The leading coefficients for direct photoproduction are computed analytically. Together with the coefficients pertinent to parton-parton scattering, they are shown to agree with those appearing in our full next-to-leading order calculations. For hadron-hadron scattering, numerical agreement is found with a previous calculation of jet production at the Tevatron. We show that the direct and resolved NNLO contributions considerably improve the description of final ZEUS data on jet photoproduction and that the error on the determination of the strong coupling constant is significantly reduced.

On the Relation of the LHeC and the LHC

The present note relies on the recently published conceptual design report of the LHeC and extends the first contribution to the European strategy debate in emphasising the role of the LHeC to complement and complete the high luminosity LHC programme. The brief discussion therefore focuses on the importance of high precision PDF and $α_s$ determinations for the physics beyond the Standard Model (GUTs, SUSY, Higgs). Emphasis is also given to the importance of high parton density phenomena in nuclei and their relevance to the heavy ion physics programme at the LHC.

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN: Report on the Physics and Design Concepts for Machine and Detector

The physics programme and the design are described of a new collider for particle and nuclear physics, the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), in which a newly built electron beam of 60 GeV, up to possibly 140 GeV, energy collides with the intense hadron beams of the LHC. Compared to HERA, the kinematic range covered is extended by a factor of twenty in the negative four-momentum squared, $Q^2$, and in the inverse Bjorken $x$, while with the design luminosity of $10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ the LHeC is projected to exceed the integrated HERA luminosity by two orders of magnitude. The physics programme is devoted to an exploration of the energy frontier, complementing the LHC and its discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model with high precision deep inelastic scattering measurements. These are designed to investigate a variety of fundamental questions in strong and electroweak interactions. The physics programme also includes electron-deuteron and electron-ion scattering in a $(Q^2, 1/x)$ range extended by four orders of magnitude as compared to previous lepton-nucleus DIS experiments for novel investigations of neutron's and nuclear structure, the initial conditions of Quark-Gluon Plasma formation and further quantum chromodynamic phenomena. The LHeC may be realised either as a ring-ring or as a linac-ring collider. Optics and beam dynamics studies are presented for both versions, along with technical design considerations on the interaction region, magnets and further components, together with a design study for a high acceptance detector. Civil engineering and installation studies are presented for the accelerator and the detector. The LHeC can be built within a decade and thus be operated while the LHC runs in its high-luminosity phase. It thus represents a major opportunity for progress in particle physics exploiting the investment made in the LHC.

Inclusive Charmed-Meson Production at the CERN LHC

We present predictions for the inclusive production of charmed hadrons at the CERN LHC in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme at next-to-leading order. Detailed numerical results are compared to data where available, or presented in a way to ease future comparisons with experimental results. We also point out that measurements at large rapidity have the potential to pin down models of intrinsic charm.

Dijet photoproduction of massless charm jets at next-to-leading order of QCD

We compute the charm dijet photoproduction cross section at next-to-leading order of QCD in the zero-mass variable flavour number scheme, i.e. with active charm quarks in the proton and photon. The results are compared to recent measurements from the ZEUS experiment at HERA. The predictions for various distributions agree well with the data, in particular for large momentum fractions of the the partons in the photon, where direct photon processes dominate. At low momentum fractions, the predictions are quite sensitive to the charm content in the photon. The experimental data are shown to favour parameterizations with a substantial charm quark density such as the one proposed by Cornet et al.

We use realistic evolved non-perturbative fragmentation functions obtained from fits to e+e- data and compare results for the transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with recent data from the CMS Collaboration. We find good agreement, in particular at large values of pT.

Factorization breaking in high-transverse-momentum charged-hadron production at the Tevatron?

We compare the transverse momentum (p_T) distribution of inclusive light-charged-particle production measured by the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron with the theoretical prediction evaluated at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) using fragmentation functions recently determined through a global data fit. While, in the lower p_T range, the data agree with the prediction within the theoretical error or slightly undershoot it, they significantly exceed it in the upper p_T range, by several orders of magnitude at the largest values of p_T, where perturbation theory should be most reliable. This disagreement is too large to be remedied by introducing additional produced particles into the calculation, and potentially challenges the validity of the factorization theorem on which the parton model of QCD relies. Clearly, a breakdown of the factorization theorem, being a fundamental property of QCD, would be extremely difficult to understand.

Suppression factors in diffractive photoproduction of dijets

After new publications of H1 data for the diffractive photoproduction of dijets, which overlap with the earlier published H1 data and the recently published data of the ZEUS collaboration, have appeared, we have recalculated the cross sections for this process in next-to-leading order (NLO) of perturbative QCD to see whether they can be interpreted consistently. The results of these calculations are compared to the data of both collaborations. We find that the NLO cross sections disagree with the data, showing that factorization breaking occurs at that order. If direct and resolved contributions are both suppressed by the same amount, the global suppression factor depends on the transverse-energy cut. However, by suppressing only the resolved contribution, also reasonably good agreement with all the data is found with a suppression factor independent of the transverse-energy cut.

AKK Update: Improvements from New Theoretical Input and Experimental Data

We perform a number of improvements to the previous AKK extraction of fragmentation functions for $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p/\bar{p}$, $K_S^0$ and $Λ/\barΛ$ particles at next-to-leading order. Inclusive hadron production measurements from $pp(\bar{p})$ reactions at BRAHMS, CDF, PHENIX and STAR are added to the data sample. We use the charge-sign asymmetry of the produced hadrons in $pp$ reactions to constrain the valence quark fragmentations. Data from $e^+ e^-$ reactions in regions of smaller $x$ and lower $\sqrt{s}$ are added. Hadron mass effects are treated for all observables and, for each particle, the hadron mass used for the description of the $e^+ e^-$ reaction is fitted. The baryons' fitted masses are found to be only around 1% above their true masses, while the values of the mesons' fitted masses have the correct order of magnitude. Large $x$ resummation is applied in the coefficient functions of the $e^+ e^-$ reactions, and also in the evolution of the fragmentation functions, which in most cases results in a significant reduction of the minimized $χ^2$. To further exploit the data, all published normalization errors are incorporated via a correlation matrix.

Collinear Subtractions in Hadroproduction of Heavy Quarks

We present a detailed discussion of the collinear subtraction terms needed to establish a massive variable-flavour-number scheme for the one-particle inclusive production of heavy quarks in hadronic collisions. The subtraction terms are computed by convoluting appropriate partonic cross sections with perturbative parton distribution and fragmentation functions relying on the method of mass factorization. We find (with one minor exception) complete agreement with the subtraction terms obtained in a previous publication by comparing the zero-mass limit of a fixed-order calculation with the genuine massles results in the MSbar scheme. This presentation will be useful for extending the massive variable-flavour-number scheme to other processes.

Diffractive Dijet Photoproduction

We have calculated diffractive dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) at low-Q^2 and next-to-leading order (NLO) of perturbative QCD, including contributions from direct and resolved photons. We study how the cross section depends on the factorization scheme and scale M_γat the virtual photon vertex for the occurance of factorization breaking. The strong M_γ-dependence, which is present when only the resolved cross section is suppressed, is tamed by intodrucing the suppression also in the initial-state NLO correction of the direct part.

Fragmentation Functions for Light Charged Hadrons with Complete Quark Flavour Separation

We present new sets of next-to-leading order fragmentation functions describing the production of charged pions, kaons and protons from the gluon and from each of the quarks, obtained by fitting to all relevant data sets from e+ e- annihilation. The individual light quark flavour fragmentation functions are obtained phenomenologically for the first time by including in the data the light quark tagging probabilities obtained by the OPAL Collaboration.

Generalizing the DGLAP Evolution of Fragmentation Functions to the Smallest x Values

An approach which unifies the Double Logarithmic Approximation at small x and the leading order DGLAP evolution of fragmentation functions at large x is presented. This approach reproduces exactly the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation, but is more complete due to the degrees of freedom given to the quark sector and the inclusion of the fixed order terms. We find that data from the largest x values to the peak region can be better fitted than with other approaches.

Hadroproduction of D and B mesons in a massive VFNS

We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order cross section for the inclusive hadroproduction of D and B mesons as a function of the transverse momentum and the rapidity in a massive variable flavor number scheme. We compare our numerical results with recent data from the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron for the production of D^0, D^{*+}, D^+, and D_s^+ mesons at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{S} = 1.96$ TeV and find reasonably good agreement with the measured cross sections.

Reconciling open charm production at the Fermilab Tevatron with QCD

We study the inclusive hadrodroduction of D^0, D^+, D^{*+}, and D_s^+ mesons at next-to-leading order in the parton model of quantum chromodynamics endowed with universal non-perturbative fragmentation functions (FFs) fitted to e^+e^- annihilation data from CERN LEP1. Working in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme, we resum the large logarithms through the evolution of the FFs and, at the same time, retain the full dependence on the charm-quark mass without additional theoretical assumptions. In this way, the cross section distributions in transverse momentum recently measured by the CDF Collaboration in run II at the Fermilab Tevatron are described within errors.

Resummation of Soft Gluon Logarithms in the DGLAP Evolution of Fragmentation Functions

We define a general scheme for the evolution of fragmentation functions which resums both soft gluon logarithms and mass singularities in a consistent manner and to any order, and requires no additional theoretical assumptions. Using the Double Logarithmic Approximation and the known perturbative results for the splitting functions, we present our scheme with the complete contribution from the double logarithms, being the largest soft gluon logarithms. We show that the resulting approximation is more complete than the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation even with the fixed order contribution calculated to leading order only, and find, after using it to fit quark and gluon fragmentation functions to experimental data, that this approximation in our scheme gives a good description of the data from the largest x_p values to the peak region in xi=ln (1/x_p), in contrast to other approximations. In addition, we develop a treatment of hadron mass effects which gives additional improvements at large xi.

Inclusive Production of Single Hadrons with Finite Transverse Momenta in Deep-Inelastic Scattering at Next-to-Leading Order

We calculate the cross section for the inclusive production of single hadrons with finite transverse momenta in deep-inelastic scattering at next-to-leading order (NLO), i.e. through O(alpha_s^2), in the parton model of QCD endowed with non-perturbative parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs). The NLO correction is found to produce a sizeable enhancement in cross section, of up to one order of magnitude, bringing the theoretical prediction to good agreement with recent measurements for neutral pions and charged hadrons at DESY HERA. This provides a useful test for the universality and the scaling violations of the FFs predicted by the factorization theorem. Such comparisons can also be used to constrain the gluon PDF of the proton.

Inclusive D* production in gamma-gamma collisions: including the single-resolved contribution with massive quarks

We have calculated the next-to-leading order cross section for the inclusive production of charm quarks as a function of the transverse momentum p_T and the rapidity in two approaches using massive or massless charm quarks. For the single-resolved cross section we have derived the massless limit from the massive theory. We find that this limit differs from the genuine massless version with MS-bar factorization by finite corrections. By adjusting subtraction terms we establish a massive theory with MS-bar subtraction which approaches the massless theory very fast with increasing transverse momentum. With these results and including the equivalent results for the direct cross section obtained previously as well as double-resolved contributions, we calculate the inclusive D*+- cross section in gamma-gamma collisions using realistic evolved non-perturbative fragmentation functions and compare with recent data from the LEP collaborations ALEPH, L3 and OPAL. We find good agreement.

B0 - B0 bar mixing, B -> J/psi K_S and B -> X_d gamma in general MSSM

We consider the gluino-mediated SUSY contributions to B0 - B0 bar mixing, B -> J/psi K_S and B -> X_d gamma in the mass insertion approximation. We find the LL mixing parameter can be as large as |delta_{13}^d_{LL}| < 2*10^-1, but the LR mixing is strongly constrained by the B -> X_d gamma branching ratio and we find |delta_{13}^d_{LR}| < 10^-2. The implications for the direct CP asymmetry in B -> X_d gamma and the dilepton charge asymmetry (A_{ll}) are also discussed, where substantial deviations from the standard model predictions are possible.

Inclusive D* Production in Photon-Photon Collisions at Next-to-Leading Order QCD

The next-to-leading order cross section for the inclusive production of charm quarks in gamma-gamma collisions is calculated as a function of the transverse momentum pT and the rapidity y in approaches using massive or massless charm quarks. For the direct cross section we derive the massless limit from the massive theory with the result that this limit differs from the massless version with MSbar factorization by finite corrections. Subtracting or adding these corrections allows us to compare the two approaches on equal footing. We establish massless and massive versions with 3 and 4 initial flavours which are shown to approach the massless approximations very fast with increasing pT. With these results we calculate the inclusive D* cross section in gamma-gamma collisions using realistic evolved fragmentation functions with appropriate factorization scales and compare with recent data for dsigma/dpT from three LEP collaborations after single- and double-resolved contributions have been added.

Testing the Universality of Fragmentation Functions

Using fragmentation functions for charged pions, charged kaons, and (anti)protons recently extracted from experimental data of e^+e^- annihilation at the Z-boson resonance and at centre-of-mass energy root(s) = 29 GeV, we perform a global study of inclusive charged-hadron production in p anti-p, gamma p, and gamma gamma collisions at next-to-leading order in the parton model of quantum chromodynamics. Comparisons of our results with p anti-p data from CERN S p anti-p S and the Fermilab Tevatron, gamma p data from DESY HERA, and gamma gamma data from CERN LEP2 allow us to test the universality of the fragmentation functions predicted by the factorization theorem. Furthermore, we perform comparisons with (e^+e^-)-annihilation data from LEP2 so as to test the scaling violations predicted by the Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations.

Numerical results for the cross section differential with respect to the fraction of momentum z_gamma carried by a photon inside a jet at large z_gamma, up to O(alpha alpha_s) in perturbative QCD, are presented. The sensitivity to the fragmentation contribution allows one to study the quark-to-photon fragmentation function. Our results can be confronted with future experimental data from HERA.

CP-Violating Asymmetries in Charmless Non-Leptonic Decays $B \to PP, PV, VV$ in the Factorization Approach

We present estimates of the direct (in decay amplitudes) and indirect (mixing- induced) CP-violating asymmetries in the non-leptonic charmless two-body decay rates for $B \to PP$, $B \to PV$ and $B \to VV$ decays and their charged conjugates, where P(V) is a light pseudoscalar (vector) meson. These estimates are based on a generalized factorization approach making use of next-to-leading order perturbative QCD contributions which generate the required strong phases. No soft final state interactions are included. We study the dependence of the asymmetries on a number of input parameters and show that there are at least two (possibly three) classes of decays in which the asymmetries are parametrically stable in this approach. The decay modes of particular interest are: $\optbar{B^0} \to π^+ π^-$, $\optbar{B^0} \to K_S^0 π^0$, $\optbar{B^0} \to K_S^0 η^\prime$, $\optbar{B^0} \to K_S^0 η$ and $\optbar{B^0} \to ρ^+ ρ^-$. Likewise, the CP-violating asymmetry in the decays $\optbar{B^0} \to K_S^0 h^0$ with $h^0=π^0,K_S^0, η,η^\prime$ is found to be parametrically stable and large. Measurements of these asymmetries will lead to a determination of the phases $\sin 2α$ and $\sin 2 β$ and we work out the relationships in these modes in the present theoretical framework. We also show the extent of the so-called "penguin pollution" in the rate asymmetry $A_{CP}(π^+ π^-)$ and of the "tree shadow" in the asymmetry $A_{CP}(K_S^0η^\prime)$ which will effect the determination of $\sin 2 α$ and $\sin 2 β$ from the respective measurements. CP-violating asymmetries in $B^\pm \to π^\pm η^\prime$, $B^\pm \to K^{*\pm} η$, $B^\pm \to K^{*\pm} η^\prime$ and $B^\pm \to K^{*\pm}ρ^0$ are potentially interesting and are studied here.

Experimental Tests of Factorization in Charmless Non-Leptonic Two-Body B Decays

Using a theoretical framework based on the next-to-leading order QCD-improved effective Hamiltonian and a factorization Ansatz for the hadronic matrix elements of the four-quark operators, we reassess branching fractions in two-body non-leptonic decays $B \to PP, PV, VV$, involving the lowest lying light pseudoscalar $(P)$ and vector $(V)$ mesons in the standard model. Using the sensitivity of the decay rates on the effective number of colors, $N_c$, as a criterion of theoretical predictivity, we classify all the current-current (tree) and penguin transitions in five different classes. The recently measured charmless two-body $B \to PP$ decays $(B^+ \to K^+ η^\prime, B^0 \to K^0 η^\prime, B^0 \to K^+π^-, B^+ \to π^+ K^0$ and charge conjugates) are dominated by the $N_c$-stable QCD penguins (class-IV transitions) and their estimates are consistent with data. The measured charmless $B \to PV$ $(B^+ \to ωK^+, ~B^+ \to ωh^+)$ and $B\to VV$ transition $(B \to ϕK^*)$, on the other hand, belong to the penguin (class-V) and tree (class-III) transitions. The class-V penguin transitions are in general more difficult to predict. We propose a number of tests of the factorization framework in terms of the ratios of branching ratios for some selected $B \to h_1 h_2$ decays involving light hadrons $h_1$ and $h_2$, which depend only moderately on the form factors. We also propose a set of measurements to determine the effective coefficients of the current-current and QCD penguin operators. The potential impact of $B \to h_1 h_2$ decays on the CKM phenomenology is emphasized by analyzing a number of decay rates in the factorization framework.

Inclusive B-Meson Production in e^+ e^- and p p-bar Collisions

We provide nonperturbative fragmentation functions for B mesons, both at leading and next-to-leading order in the MS-bar factorization scheme with five massless quark flavors. They are determined by fitting the fractional energy distribution of B mesons inclusively produced in e^+ e^- annihilation at CERN LEP1. Theoretical predictions for the inclusive production of B mesons with high transverse momenta in p p-bar scattering obtained with these fragmentation functions nicely agree, both in shape and normalization, with data recently taken at the Fermilab Tevatron.

Inclusive Jet Production with Virtual Photons in Next-to-Leading Order QCD

We present a next-to-leading order calculation for the virtual photoproduction of one and two jets in $ep$ collisions. Soft and collinear singularities are extracted using the phase space slicing method. The collinear photon initial state singularity depends logarithmically on the mass of the virtual photon and is absorbed into the virtual photon structure function. An $\overline{MS}$ factorization scheme is defined similarly to the real photon case. Numerical results are presented for HERA conditions using the Snowmass jet definition for inclusive single jet and dijet cross sections. We study the dependence of these cross sections on the transverse energies and rapidities of the jets. Finally, we compare the ratio of the experimentally defined resolved and direct cross sections with recent ZEUS data as a function of the photon virtuality $P^2$.

Jet Shapes in $ep$ and $p\overline{p}$ Collisions in NLO QCD

We have calculated jet shapes in low $Q^2$ $ep$ and $p\overline{p}$ collisions in perturbation theory at order $α_s^3$ for the hard parton-parton processes. For the $γp$ process resolved and direct contributions are superimposed. The dependence of the jet shapes on transverse energy, rapidity, and inner cone extension is studied. The numerical results of the calculation are compared with recent data from ZEUS at HERA and from CDF and D0 at the TEVATRON. Good agreement is achieved if the problem of merging overlapping jets is taken into account by varying the parameter $R_{sep}$ as a function of transverse energy and rapidity.

Large-p_T Photoproduction of D^*+- Mesons in ep Collisions

The cross section for the inclusive photoproduction of large-p_T D^*+- mesons is calculated at next-to-leading order, adopting different approaches to describe the fragmentation of charm quarks into D^*+- mesons. We treat the charm quark according to the massless factorization scheme, where it is assumed to be one of the active flavours inside the proton and the photon. We present inclusive single-particle distributions in transverse momentum and rapidity, including the contributions due to both direct and resolved photons. We compare and assess the various implementations of fragmentation. We argue that, in the high-p_T regime, a particularly realistic description can be obtained by convoluting the Altarelli-Parisi-evolved fragmentation functions of Peterson et al. with the hard-scattering cross sections of massless partons where the factorization of the collinear singularities associated with final-state charm quarks is converted to the massive-charm scheme. The predictions thus obtained agree well with recent experimental data by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at DESY HERA.

We present new sets of nonperturbative fragmentation functions for D^*+- mesons, both at leading and next-to-leading order in the MS-bar factorization scheme with five massless quark flavors. They are determined by fitting the latest OPAL and ALEPH data on inclusive D^*+- production in e^+e^- annihilation. We take the charm-quark fragmentation function to be of the form proposed by Peterson et al. and thus obtain new values of the epsilon_c parameter, which are specific for our choice of factorization scheme. With these fragmentation functions, recent data on inclusive D^*+- photoproduction in ep collisions at HERA are reasonably well reproduced.

Inclusive Hadron Production in Photon-Photon Collisions at Next-to-Leading Order

We study inclusive charged-hadron production in collisions of quasireal photons at NLO in perturbative QCD, using fragmentation functions recently extracted from PEP and LEP1 data. We superimpose the direct (DD), single-resolved (DR), and double-resolved (RR) gamma-gamma channels. First, we confront existing data taken by TASSO at PETRA and by MARK II at PEP with our NLO calculations. We also make comparisons with the neutral-kaon to charged-hadron ratio measured by MARK II. Then, we present NLO predictions for LEP2, a next-generation e+e- linear collider (NLC) in the TESLA design, and a Compton collider obtained by converting a NLC. We analyze transverse-momentum and rapidity spectra with regard to the scale dependence, the interplay of the DD, DR, and RR components, the sensitivity to the gluon density in the resolved photon, and the influence of gluon fragmentation. It turns out that the inclusive measurement of small-p_T hadrons at a Compton collider would greatly constrain the gluon density of the photon and the gluon fragmentation function.

Inclusive Two-Jet Production at HERA: Direct and Resolved Cross Sections in Next-to-Leading Order QCD

We have calculated inclusive two-jet cross sections in next-to-leading order QCD for low Q^2 ep collisions superimposing direct and resolved contributions. Infrared and collinear singularities in the virtual and real contributions are cancelled with the phase space slicing method. Various inclusive two-jet distributions have been computed. The results are compared with recent data from the ZEUS collaboration at HERA.

LARGE LOGARITHM BEHAVIOUR OF e^+e^- JET CROSS SECTIONS AND EVENT SHAPE DISTRIBUTIONS IN O(alpha_s^2)

We have calculated the leading and next-to-leading logarithm coefficients of $O(α_s^2)$ $e^+e^-$ annihilation jet cross sections, thrust distribution and energy-energy correlation in the two-jet limit when the jet resolution and the event shape variables vanish. We have compared our results with expectations based on leading logarithm approximations used to resum the pertubative cross sections where this is possible. There is good agreement for the leading and next-to-leading coefficients of jet cross sections in the Durham scheme. Also for the thrust distribution and energy-energy correlation we find results which are consistent with the leading logarithm predictions.

Large-$p_\perp$ Heavy-Quark Production in Two-Photon Collisions

The next-to-leading-order (NLO) cross section for the production of heavy quarks at large transverse momenta ($p_\perp$) in $γγ$ collisions is calculated with perturbative fragmentation functions (PFF's). This approach allows for a resummation of terms $\proptoα_s\ln(p_\perp^2/m^2)$ which arise in NLO from collinear emission of gluons by heavy quarks at large $p_\perp$ or from almost collinear branching of photons or gluons into heavy-quark pairs. We present single-inclusive distributions in $p_\perp$ and rapidity including direct and resolved photons for $γγ$ production of heavy quarks at $e^+e^-$ colliders and at high-energy $γγ$ colliders. The results are compared with the fixed-order calculation for $m$ finite including QCD radiative corrections. The two approaches differ in the definitions and relative contributions of the direct and resolved terms, but essentially agree in their sum. The resummation of the $α_s \ln(p_\perp^2/m^2)$ terms in the PFF approach leads to a softer $p_\perp$ distribution and to a reduced sensitivity to the choice of the renormalization and factorization scales.

Pion and Kaon Production in $e^+e^-$ and $ep$ Collisions at Next-to-Leading Order

We present new sets of fragmentation functions for charged pions and kaons, both at leading and next-to-leading order. They are fitted to data on inclusive charged-hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation taken by TPC at PEP ($\sqrt s=29$~GeV) and to similar data by ALEPH at LEP, who discriminated between events with charm, bottom, and light- flavour fragmentation in their charged-hadron sample. We treat all partons independently and to properly incorporate the charm and bottom thresholds. Due to the sizeable energy gap between PEP and LEP, we are sensitive to the scaling violation in the fragmentation process, which allows us to extract a value for the asymptotic scale parameter of QCD, $Λ$. Recent data on inclusive charged-hadron production in tagged three-jet events by OPAL and similar data for longitudinal electron polarization by ALEPH allow us to pin down the gluon fragmentation functions. Our new fragmentation functions lead to an excellent description of a multitude of other $e^+e^-$ data on inclusive charged-hadron production, ranging from $\sqrt s=5.2$~GeV to LEP energy. In addition, they agree nicely with the transverse-momentum spectra of single charged hadrons measured by H1 and ZEUS in photoproduction at the $ep$ collider HERA, which represents a nontrivial check of the factorization theorem of the QCD-improved parton model.

CP Violation and Strong Phases from Penguins in $\bf B^{\pm}\rightarrow PP$ and $\bf B^{\pm}\rightarrow VP$ Decays

We calculate direct CP-violating rate asymmetries in charged $B\to PP$ and $B\to VP$ decays arising from the interference of amplitudes with different strong and CKM phases. The perturbative strong phases develop at order $α_s$ from absorptive parts of one-loop matrix elements of the next-to-leading logarithm corrected effective Hamiltonian. CPT constraints are maintained. Based on this model, we find that partial rate asymmetries between charge conjugate $B^{\pm}$ decays can be as high as 20\% for certain channels with branching ratios in the $10^{-6}$ range. Because the $c\bar{c}$ threshold lies so close to the physical momentum scale, the asymmetries depend sensitively on the model assumptions used to evaluate the imaginary parts of the matrix elements, in particular, on the internal momentum transfer. The charge asymmetries of partial rates would provide unambiguous evidence for direct CP violation.

CP Violation and Strong Phases from Penguins in $\bf B^{\pm}\rightarrow VV$ Decays

We calculate direct CP-violating observables in charged $B\to VV$ decays arising from the interference of amplitudes with different strong and CKM phases. The perturbative strong phases develop at order $α_s$ from absorptive parts of one-loop matrix elements of the next-to-leading logarithm corrected effective Hamiltonian. CPT constraints are maintained. Based on this model, we find that partial rate asymmetries between charge conjugate $B^{\pm}$ decays can be as high as 15-30\% for certain channels with branching ratios in the $10^{-6}$ range. The small values of the coefficients of angular correlations, which we calculated previously to be of order $10^{-2}$, are not significantly degraded by the strong phases. The charge asymmetries of rates and angular distributions would provide unambiguous evidence for direct CP violation.
