Ratio of kaon-to-pion production cross-sections in $Be Be$ collisions as a function of $\sqrt{s}$

The inclusive spectra of pions and kaons produced in $Be Be$ collisions as functions of their transverse momentum $p_t$ at mid-rapidity are calculated within the self-similarity approach. A satisfactory description of NA61/SHINE data on these spectra and the ratio of $K^\pm$ to $π^\pm$ meson production cross sections in $Be Be$ collisions as a function of $\sqrt{s}$ are presented. The similarity of these observables to the ones for $pp$ collisions at mid-rapidity and in the wide range of initial energies is illustrated.

Novel Heavy-Quark Physics Phenomena

We review the current understanding of heavy quark parton distributions in nucleons and their impact on deep inelastic scattering, collider physics, and other processes at high energies. The determination of the heavy-quark parton distribution functions is particularly significant for the analysis of hard processes at LHC energies, including the forward rapidity high $x_\mathrm{F}$ domain. The contribution of "intrinsic" heavy quarks, which are multiply connected to the valence quarks of nucleons, is reviewed within non-perturbative physics which provides new information on the fundamental structure of hadrons in QCD. A new prediction for the non-perturbative intrinsic charm-anticharm asymmetry of the proton eigenstate has recently been obtained from a QCD lattice gauge theory calculation of the proton's $G_\mathrm{E}^p(Q^2)$ form factor. This form factor only arises from non-valence quarks and anti-quarks if they have different contributions in the proton's eigenstate. This result, together with the exclusive and inclusive connection and analytic constraints on the form of hadronic structure functions from Light-Front Holographic QCD (LFHQCD) predicts a significant non-perturbative $c(x,Q) - \bar{c}(x,Q)$ asymmetry in the proton structure function at high $x$, consistent with the dynamics predicted by intrinsic charm models. Recent ATLAS data on the associated production of prompt photons and charm-quark jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV has provided new constraints on non-perturbative intrinsic charm and tests of the LGTH predictions. We also focus on other experimental observables which have high sensitivity to the intrinsic heavy contributions to PDFs.

Mid-rapidity dependence of hadron production in $p-p$ and $A-A$ collisions

The calculation of inclusive spectra of pions produced in $pp$ and $AA$ collisions as a function of rapidity $y$ is presented within the self-similarity approach. It is shown that at not large rapidities $y$ one can obtain the analytical form of the self-similarity function $Π(y,p_t)$ dependent of $y$ and hadron transverse momentum $p_t$. A satisfactory description of data on the rapidity spectra at $|y|\leq$ 0.3 is illustrated within a good agreement. The universal energy dependence of these spectra is also shown.

Probing proton intrinsic charm in photon or Z boson production accompanied by heavy jets at LHC

We consider an observable very sensitive to the non-zero intrinsic charm (IC) contribution to the proton density. It is the ratio between the differential cross sections of the photon or $Z$-boson and $c$-jet production in the $pp$ collision, $γ(Z) + c$, and the $γ(Z)$ and the $b$-jet production. It is shown that this ratio can be approximately flat or increasing at large $γ(Z)$ transverse momenta $p_T$ and their pseudo-rapidities $1.5 < η< 2.4$ if the IC contribution is taken into account. On the contrary, in the absence of the IC this ratio decreases as $p_T$ grows. We also present the ratios of the cross sections integrated over $p_T$ as a function of the IC probability $w$. It is shown that these ratios are mostly independent on the theoretical uncertainties, and such predictions could therefore be much more promising for the search for the intrinsic charm signal at the LHC compared to the predictions for $p_T$-spectra, which significantly depend on these uncertainties.

Significance of non-perturbative input to TMD gluon density for hard processes at LHC

We study the role of the non-perturbative input to the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) gluon density in hard processes at the LHC. We derive the input TMD gluon distribution at low scale mu0^2 ~ 1 GeV^2 from the fit of the inclusive hadron spectra measured at low transverse momenta in pp collisions at the LHC and demonstrate that the best description of these spectra for larger hadron transverse momenta can be achieved by matching the derived TMD gluon distribution with the exact solution of the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) equation obtained at low x and small gluon transverse momenta outside the saturation region. Then, we extend the input TMD gluon density to higher mu^2 numerically using the Catani-Ciafoloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) gluon evolution equation. A special attention is put to the phenomenological applications of obtained TMD gluon density to some LHC processes, which are sensitive to the gluon content of a proton.

Self-similarity of hadron production in p-p and A-A collisions at high energies

We analyze the self-similarity approach applied to study the hadron production in p-p and A-A collisions. This approach allows us to describe rather well the ratio of the proton to anti-proton yields in A-A collisions as a function of the energy at a wide range from a few GeV to a few TeV. We suggest a modification of this approach to describe rather well the inclusive spectra of hadrons produced in $pp$ collisions at different initial energies from the AGS to LHC.

Proton structure from hard p-p processes at high energies

Up to now, the existence of intrinsic (or valence-like) heavy quark components of the proton distribution function has not yet been confirmed or rejected. We show that this hypothesis can be verified at experiments on the inclusive production of the open strangeness (NA61) and at measurements of prompt photons or vector bosons accompanied by heavy flavour jets performed at LHC, CERN. Our theoretical study demonstrates that investigations of the intrinsic heavy quark contributions look very promising in hard processes like $pp\rightarrow K^\pm+X$ and $pp\rightarrowγ/Z/W +c(b)+X$. A possible observation of these components at the CBM, NICA experiments is discussed also.

Search for intrinsic charm in vector boson production accompanied by heavy flavor jets

Up to now, the existence of intrinsic (or valence-like) heavy quark component of the proton distribution functions has not yet been confirmed or rejected. The LHC with pp-collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7-13 TeV can supply us with extra unique information concerning this hypothesis. On the basis of our theoretical studies, it is demonstrated that investigations of the intrinsic heavy quark contributions look very promising in processes like $pp \rightarrow Z/W + c(b) + X$. A ratio of $Z+$ heavy jets over $W+$ heavy jets differential cross section as a function of the leading jet transverse momentum is proposed to maximize the sensitivity to the intrinsic charm component of the proton.

Heavy flavour production in pp collisions and intrinsic quark components in proton

The LHC data on the forward heavy flavour hadron production can be a new unique source for estimation of intrinsic heavy quark contributions to the proton. We discuss in detail the D-meson production in pp collisions at the LHC including the intrinsic charm in the proton. We present also some predictions for the K-meson production in the pp collision at the initial energies 158 GeV and 7 TeV made within the perturbative QCD including the intrinsic strangeness in the proton that can be verified in the NA61 experiment and at LHC.

LHC soft physics and TMD gluon density at low x

We study the unintegrated, or transverse momentum dependent (TMD) gluon distribution obtained from the best description of the LHC data on the inclusive spectra of hadrons produced in the mid-rapidity region and low transverse momenta at starting scale Q0^2 = 1 GeV^2. To extend this gluon density at higher Q^2 we apply the Catani-Ciafoloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) evolution equation. The influence of the initial (starting) non-perturbative gluon distribution is studied. The application of the obtained gluon density to the analysis of the ep deep inelastic scattering allows us to get the results which describe reasonably well the H1 and ZEUS data on the longitudinal proton structure function FL(x,Q^2). So, the connection between the soft processes at LHC and small x physics at HERA has been confirmed and extended to a wide kinematical region.

Nucleon structure and hard p-p processes at high energies

The production of heavy flavour hadrons in $pp$ collisions at large values of their transverse momenta can be a new unique source for estimation of intrinsic heavy quark contribution to the proton. We analyze the inclusive production of the open strangeness and the semi-inclusive hard processes of the photon and vector boson production accompanied by the $c$- or $b$-jets in $pp$ collisions. We show that one should select the parton-level (sub)processes (and final-state signatures) that are the most sensitive to the intrinsic heavy quark contributions. We present some predictions for these processes made within the perturbative QCD including the intrinsic strangeness and intrinsic charm in the proton that can be verified in the NA61 experiment and at LHC.

preprint2013arXiv

Searching for intrinsic charm in the proton at the LHC

Despite rather long-term theoretical and experimental studies, the hypothesis of the non-zero intrinsic (or valence-like) heavy quark component of the proton distribution functions has not yet been confirmed or rejected. The LHC with $pp$-collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 7--14 TeV will obviously supply extra unique information concerning the above-mentioned component of the proton. To use the LHC potential, first of all, one should select the parton-level (sub)processes (and final-state signatures) that are most sensitive to the intrinsic heavy quark contributions. To this end inclusive production of $c(b)$-jets accompanied by photons is considered. On the basis of the performed theoretical study it is demonstrated that the investigation of the intrinsic heavy quark contributions looks very promising at the LHC in processes such as $pp\rightarrow γ+ c(b)+X$.

Systematic properties of the Tsallis Distribution: Energy Dependence of Parameters in High-Energy p-p Collisions

Changes in the transverse momentum distributions with beam energy are studied using the Tsallis distribution as a parameterization. The dependence of the Tsallis parameters q, T and the volume are determined as a function of beam energy. The Tsallis parameter q shows a weak but clear increase with beam energy with the highest value being approximately 1.15. The Tsallis temperature and volume are consistent with being independent of beam energy within experimental uncertainties.

Transition between soft physics at LHC and low-x physics at HERA

We find out the connection between the unintegrated gluon distribution at low intrinsic transverse momenta and the inclusive spectrum of the hadrons produced in pp collision at LHC energies in the mid-rapidity region and low hadron transverse momenta. The parameters of this distribution are found from the best description of the LHC data. Its application to the analysis of ep deep inelastic scattering allows us to obtain the results which reasonable describe the H1 and ZEUS data on the structure functions at low x. The connection between the soft processes at LHC and small-x physics at HERA is found.

preprint2012arXiv

Forward heavy flavour production in p-p collisions at LHC and intrinsic quark components in proton

The LHC data on the forward heavy flavour hadron production can be a new unique source for estimation of intrinsic charm and bottom contributions to the proton. For example, we analyze the forward heavy baryon production, namely $Λ_b$-baryon, within the soft QCD quark gluon string model and present the predictions for observables which could be measured at the LHC. We also present some predictions for the $D$-meson production in $pp$ collisions made within the perturbative QCD including the intrinsic charm in the proton that can be verified at the LHC.

preprint2012arXiv

Unintegrated gluon distribution and soft pp collisions at LHC

We found the parameterization of the unintegrated gluon distribution from the best description of the LHC data on the inclusive spectra of hadrons produced in $pp$ collisions at the mid-rapidity region and small transverse momenta. It is different from the one obtained within perturbative QCD only at low intrinsic transverse momenta $k_t$. The application of this distribution to analysis of the $e-p$ DIS allows us to get the results which do not contradict the H1 and ZEUS data on the structure functions at low $x$. So, the connection between the soft processes at LHC and low-$x$ physics at HERA is found.

Dynamical and thermal descriptions in parton distribution functions

We suggest a duality between the standard (dynamical) and statistical distributions of partons in the nucleons. The temperature parameter entering into the statistical form for the quark distributions is estimated. It is found that this effective temperature is practically the same for the dependence on longitudinal and transverse momenta and, in turn, it is close to the freeze-out temperature in high energy heavy-ion collisions.

Gluon distribution in proton at soft and hard pp collisions

We analyze the inclusive spectra of hadrons produced in $pp$ collisions at high energies in the mid-rapidity region within the soft QCD and perturbative QCD assuming the possible creation of the soft gluons at low intrinsic transverse momenta $k_t$. From the best description of the LHC data we found the parametrization of the unintegrated gluon distribution which at low $k_t$ is different from the one obtained within the perturbative QCD.

Role of gluons in soft and semi-hard multiple hadron production in pp collisions at LHC

Hadron inclusive spectra in pp collisions are analyzed within the modified quark-gluon string model including both the longitudinal and transverse motion of quarks in the proton in the wide region of initial energies. The self-consistent analysis shows that the experimental data on the inclusive spectra of light hadrons like pions and kaons at ISR energies can be satisfactorily described at transverse momenta not larger than 1-2 GeV/c. We discuss some difficulties to apply this model at energies above the ISR and suggest to include the distribution of gluons in the proton unintegrated over the internal transverse momentum. It leads to an increase in the inclusive spectra of hadrons and allows us to extend the satisfactory description of the data in the central rapidity region at energies higher than ISR.

Duality of thermal and dynamical descriptions in particle interactions

We suggest a duality between the statistical and standard (dynamical) distributions of partons in the nucleons. The temperature parameter entering into the statistical form for the quark distributions is estimated. It is found that this effective temperature is practically the same for the dependence on logitudinal and transverse momenta and, it is close to the freeze-out temperature in high energy heavy-ion collisions.

Forward production of beauty baryons in pp collisions at LHC

The production of charmed and beauty baryons in proton-proton collisions at high energies is analyzed within the modified quark-gluon string model. We present some predictions for the experiments on the forward beauty baryon production in pp collisions at LHC energies. This analysis allows us to find useful information on the Regge trajectories of the heavy (b barb) mesons and the sea beauty quark distributions in the proton.

Forward production of heavy flavour hadrons in p-p collisions and intrinsic charm and bottom in proton

We present the theoretical results on the forward Lambda_b production in pp collisions obtained within the soft QCD, namely the quark gluon string model, at LHC energies. It can give us useful information on the Regge trajectories of the (b{\bar b}) mesons. An opportunity to find the information on the intrinsic charm and bottom in the proton by analyzing the forward heavy flavour hadron production in pp collisions is discussed.

Gluons in proton and soft pp collisions at high energies

The hadron inclusive spectra in pp collisions at high energies are analyzed within a soft QCD model, namely the quark-gluon string model. In addition to the sea quark distribution in the incoming proton we consider also the unintegrated gluon distribution that has an increasing behaviour when the gluon transverse momentum grows. It leads to an increase of the inclusive spectra of hadrons and their multiplicity in the central rapidity region of pp collision at LHC energies.

Relativistic and spin effects in elastic backward p-d scattering

The elastic backward proton-deuteron scattering is analyzed including relativistic effects in the deuteron and the mechanism of this reaction which includes the graphs corresponding to the emission, rescattering and absorption of the virtual pion by a deuteron nucleon in addition to the one-nucleon exchange graph. It allows one to obtain a rather satisfactory description of all the experimental data on the differential cross section, tensor analyzing power of the deuteron and transfer polarization in this reaction.

Transverse momentum spectra of D and B mesons in hadron collisions at high energies

Transverse momentum spectra of charmed and beauty mesons produced in proton-proton and proton-antiproton collisions at high energies are analyzed within the modified quark-gluon string model (QGSM) including the internal motion of quarks in colliding hadrons. It is shown that this approach can describe rather satisfactorily the experimental data at not large values of the transverse momentum where the NLO QCD calculation has a big uncertainty. We also show that using both the QGSM and the NLO QCD one can describe these data in a wide region of transverse momenta and give some predictions for the future LHC experiments.

Hadron Multiplicity in Semi-Inclusive Lepton-Nucleon and Lepton-Nucleus Scattering

We discuss multi-hadron production in both inelastic neutrino-nucleon interactions in the current fragmentation region and neutrino-nucleus collisions in the target fragmentation region. Our analysis, carried out within the framework of the quark-gluon string model, is mainly focused on the difference between these two processes. We show that the $Q^2$ dependence of hadron multiplicity in the current and target fragmentation regions is indeed completely different. The study of inelastic $ν-A$ scattering in the target fragmentation region also provides new information on nuclear structure at small $N-N$ distances. The results of the proposed approach are in satisfactory agreement with the data recently obtained at CERN by the NOMAD Collaboration.

preprint1999arXiv

Backward hadron production in neutrino-nucleus interactions

The production of backward pions in lepton-nucleus collisions is analyzed. We show that a large yield of high momentum backward pions can be explained by the Regge asymptotic of the distribution of nucleons carrying a large momentum fraction in the nuclear target. The calculated spectra of pions emitted in the neutrino + Ne --> muon + pion + X reaction are in satisfactory agreement with the available experimental data.

preprint1996arXiv

Antiproton production in $pp, dp$ and $dd$ collisions close to threshold

The production of antiprotons in $pp$ collisions is investigated close to threshold where experimental data about the total cross section are not available. We analyze the latter reaction within the LUND string model for inclusive $\bar{p}$ production and within the framework of a one-boson exchange model for the exclusive reaction $pp \rightarrow ppp\bar{p}$. The application of our new results to the analysis of subthreshold antiproton production in $d + p$ and $d + d$ collisions shows cross sections that are much lower than expected before. Nevertheless, the comparison of experimental $\bar{p}$ differential cross sections from $d +p$ and $d + d$ is expected to provide valuable information about a nonnucleonic component in the deuteron wavefunction.

Semihard Hadron Processes and Quark-gluon String Model

A new approach to the analysis of soft and semihard hadron processes is suggested. In the frame of the Quark-Gluon String Model the interaction of valence quarks and diquarks and sea quarks (antiquarks) of colliding hadrons is taken into account. This one is calculated as the exchange by one nonpertubative gluon, i.e., the cut-off parameter in the gluonic propagator is included. This one allows us to analise the inclusive hadron spectra in hadron collisions at transverse momenta up to 3-4 Gev/c.
