Microwave Response of Coaxial Cavities Made of Bulk Magnesium Diboride

We report on the microwave (mw) properties of coaxial cavities built by using bulk MgB2 superconductor prepared by reactive liquid Mg infiltration technology. We have assembled a homogeneous cavity, by using an outer MgB2 cylinder and an inner MgB2 rod, and a hybrid cavity by using an outer copper cylinder and the same MgB2 rod as inner conductor. By the analysis of the resonance curves, in the different resonant modes, we have determined the microwave surface resistance, Rs, of the MgB2 materials as a function of the temperature and the frequency, in the absence of DC magnetic fields. At T = 4.2 K and f = 2.5 GHz, by a mw pulsed technique, we have determined the quality factor of the homogeneous cavity as a function of the input power up to a maximum level of about 40 dBm (corresponding to a maximum peak magnetic field of about 100 Oe). Contrary to what occurs in many films, Rs of the MgB2 material used does not exhibit visible variations up to an input power level of about 10 dBm and varies less than a factor of 2 on further increasing the input power of 30 dB.

Surface-Barrier Effects in the Microwave Second-Harmonic Response of Superconductors in the Mixed State

We report on transient effects in the microwave second-order response of different type of superconductors in the mixed state. The samples have contemporarily been exposed to a dc magnetic field, varying with a constant rate of 60 Oe/s, and a pulsed microwave magnetic field. The time evolution of the signal radiated at the second-harmonic frequency of the driving field has been measured for about 500 s from the instant in which the dc-field sweep has been stopped, with sampling time of about 0.3 s. We show that the second-harmonic signal exhibits two relaxation regimes; an initial exponential decay, which endures roughly 10 s, and a logarithmic decay in the time scale of minutes. Evidence is given that the decay in the time scale of minutes is ruled by magnetic relaxation over the surface barrier.

A search for incipient lattice instabilities in MgB$_{2}$ by anelastic spectroscopy

We measured the complex dynamic elastic modulus of MgB2 between 1.3 and 650 K at frequencies included between 5 and 70 kHz. The main purpose of this work is to search for possible lattice instabilities, which could contribute to enhance the electron-phonon coupling. The Young's modulus indeed presents an anomalous softening on cooling below 400 K, and hysteresis between cooling and heating. Such anomalies, however, can be accounted for by intense relaxation processes with maxima between 50 and 150 K, whose nature is not yet clarified, and by geometric defects generated by the anisotropic thermal expansion between the grains during thermal cycling. Additional intense relaxation processes are observed above room temperature, and their possible origin is discussed. The influence of the highly anharmonic in-plane vibration modes of the B atoms on the elastic and anelastic properties of MgB2 is discussed in detail.
