Observation of Massless and Massive Collective Excitations with Faraday Patterns in a Two-Component Superfluid

We report on the experimental measurement of the dispersion relation of the density and spin collective excitation modes in an elongated two-component superfluid of ultracold bosonic atoms. Our parametric spectroscopic technique is based on the external modulation of the transverse confinement frequency, leading to the formation of density and spin Faraday waves. We show that the application of a coherent coupling between the two components reduces the phase symmetry and gives a finite mass to the spin modes.

Observation of magnetic solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We experimentally investigate the dynamics of spin solitary waves (magnetic solitons) in a harmonically trapped, binary superfluid mixture. We measure the in-situ density of each pseudospin component and their relative local phase via an interferometric technique we developed, and as such, fully characterise the magnetic solitons while they undergo oscillatory motion in the trap. Magnetic solitons exhibit non-dispersive, dissipationless long-time dynamics. By imprinting multiple magnetic solitons in our ultracold gas sample, we engineer binary collisions between solitons of either same or opposite magnetisation and map out their trajectories.

A Sideband-Enhanced Cold Atomic Source For Optical Clocks

We demonstrate the enhancement and optimization of a cold strontium atomic beam from a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap (2D-MOT) transversely loaded from a collimated atomic beam by adding a sideband frequency to the cooling laser. The parameters of the cooling and sideband beams were scanned to achieve the maximum atomic beam flux and compared with Monte Carlo simulations. We obtained a 2.3 times larger, and 4 times brighter, atomic flux than a conventional, single-frequency 2D-MOT, for a given total power of 200 mW. We show that the sideband-enhanced 2D-MOT can reach the loading rate performances of space demanding Zeeman slower-based systems, while it can overcome systematic effects due to thermal beam collisions and hot black-body radiation shift, making it suitable for both transportable and accurate optical lattice clocks. Finally we numerically studied the possible extensions of the sideband-enhanced 2D-MOT to other alkaline-earth species.

A compact high-flux source of cold sodium atoms

We present a compact source of cold sodium atoms suitable for the production of quantum degenerate gases and versatile for a multi-species experiment. The magnetic field produced by permanent magnets allows to simultaneously realize a Zeeman slower and a two-dimensional MOT within an order of magnitude smaller length than standard sodium sources. We achieve an atomic flux exceeding 4x10^9 atoms/s loaded in a MOT, with a most probable longitudinal velocity of 20 m/s, and a brightness larger than 2.5x10^(12) atoms/s/sr. This atomic source allowed us to produce a pure BEC with more than 10^7 atoms and a background pressure limited lifetime of 5 minutes.

Charge dynamics of a single donor coupled to a few electrons quantum dot in silicon

We study the charge transfer dynamics between a silicon quantum dot and an individual phosphorous donor using the conduction through the quantum dot as a probe for the donor ionization state. We use a silicon n-MOSFET (metal oxide field effect transistor) biased near threshold in the SET regime with two side gates to control both the device conductance and the donor charge. Temperature and magnetic field independent tunneling time is measured. We measure the statistics of the transfer of electrons observed when the ground state D0 of the donor is aligned with the SET states.

Increasing Quantum Degeneracy by Heating a Superfluid

We consider a uniform superfluid confined in two compartments connected by a superleak and initially held at equal temperatures. If one of the two compartments is heated, a fraction of the superfluid will flow through the superleak. We show that, under certain thermodynamic conditions, the atoms flow from the hotter to the colder compartment, contrary to what happens in the fountain effect observed in superfluid Helium. This flow causes quantum degeneracy to increase in the colder compartment. In superfluid Helium, this novel thermomechanical effect takes place in the phonon regime of very low temperatures. In dilute quantum gases, it occurs at all temperatures below Tc . The increase in quantum degeneracy reachable through the adiabatic displacement of the wall separating the two compartments is also discussed.

Coherent transport of atomic wave packets in amplitude-modulated vertical optical lattices

We report on the realization of dynamical control of transport for ultra-cold Sr88 atoms loaded in an accelerated and amplitude-modulated 1D optical lattice. We tailor the energy dispersion of traveling wave packets and reversibly switch between Wannier-Stark localization and driven transport based on coherent tunneling. Within a Loschmidt-echo scheme where the atomic group velocities are reversed at once, we demonstrate a novel mirror for matter waves working independently of the momentum state and discuss possible applications to force measurements at micrometric scales.

A quasi-pure Bose-Einstein condensate immersed in a Fermi sea

We report the observation of co-existing Bose-Einstein condensate and Fermi gas in a magnetic trap. With a very small fraction of thermal atoms, the 7Li condensate is quasi-pure and in thermal contact with a 6Li Fermi gas. The lowest common temperature is 0.28 muK = 0.2(1) T_C = 0.2(1) T_F where T_C is the BEC critical temperature and T_F the Fermi temperature. Behaving as an ideal gas in the radial trap dimension, the condensate is one-dimensional.

Sympathetic cooling of bosonic and fermionic Lithium gases towards quantum degeneracy

Sympathetic cooling of two atomic isotopes is experimentally investigated. Using forced evaporation of a bosonic 7Li gas in a magnetic trap, a sample of 3 10^5 6Li fermions has been sympathetically cooled to 9(3)muK, corresponding to 2.2(0.8) times the Fermi temperature. The measured rate constant for 2-body inelastic collisions of 7Li |2,2> state at low magnetic field is 1.0^{+0.8}_{-0.5} 10^-14 cm^3s^-1.
